Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Rick Perlstein, historian, writer at The American Prospect, and author of his most recent book Reaganland: America's Right Turn 1976-1980. But first, they run through updates on Joe Biden's pardoning of Hunter, Trump's developing cabinet, Israel's ethnic cleansing of Gaza and developing annexation, Pete Hegseth's history of abuse, US arms to Ukraine, German VW workers strike, and the DNC chair race, before watching Kash Patel preview what he'll bring to the Trump administration live with Steve Bannon. Rick Perlstein then joins, as he, Sam, and Emma dive right into making sense of the social welfare promises made by vitriolic far-right populist regimes, be it Bismark's invention of unemployment, a KKK that supports single-payer healthcare, or an RFK healthcare regime that could reign in Big Pharma, assessing the actual value of these promises and the limited impact they have as fascist carrots, and emphasizing why these administrations focus on destroying institutions and systems, not building them. After expanding on the particular threat of an RFK-led world of public “health”, Perlstein dives into the unfortunate necessity of relying on experts for a well-functioning democracy, before turning fully toward the future of a new Trump Administration, unpacking why the failure of their fear-mongering policies – particularly when it comes to their insane deportation scheme – won't undermine the administration or its support, and why we need to rebuild our society's trust in the government's ability to help. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss Trump's administration of “deep-state disruptors,” unpack Biden's pardoning of Hunter, and parse through a former Israeli Defense Minister's statements on Israel's “ethnic cleansing” of Gaza. They also talk with Clover from Central Valley about moving away from fascism and with Tammy from Illinois about academic paths under fascism, also watching Michael Knowles take a dip back into his acting career. Ali from Wisconsin asks about the potential of denaturalization under a new Trump administration, plus, your calls and IMs! Know Your Enemy
The History of the History of the Right (w/ Kim Phillips-Fein)

Know Your Enemy

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 17, 2024 66:54

When did the American conservative movement begin? Who were its chief protagonists? What were their main motivations? Is the conservative movement a social movement, like any other, or is it something different? Should scholars have "sympathy" for their conservative subjects in order to study them? And are there important distinctions to be drawn between "conservative," "the right," and "the far right?" These are the sorts of questions historians ask each other and themselves. The changing ways they answer them — and the reasons their answers  change — is the subject of today's episode. In other words: we're discussing the historiography of the American right. (Fun!)In a highly influential 1994 essay, historian Alan Brinkley referred to conservatism as "something of an orphan in historical scholarship." By 2011, when our brilliant guest, Kim Phillips-Fein, surveyed the historical literature on conservatism, she found a dynamic, prolific, even "trendy" field, but one with many unsettled methodological debates. In 2017, friend of the pod Rick Perlstein wrote that historians, himself included, had made a mistake, privileging the more respectable and intellectual dimensions of conservatism over the more irrational, rank, and racist. "If Donald Trump is the latest chapter of conservatism's story," Perlstein mused, "might historians have been telling that story wrong?" Since then, several studies and popular books have emerged which correct the record, and take up Perlstein's call to study "conservative history's political surrealists and intellectual embarrassments, its con artists and tribunes of white rage." To start off the year — an election year, no less — we're taking up these questions again. What is the state of the field of conservative studies now? Have historians, popular writers, and/or podcasters over-corrected, in the Trump era, for the mistakes Perlstein cites? What might we be missing this time? We're so very lucky to have long-time friend of the show Kim Phillips-Fein, the Robert Gardiner-Kenneth T. Jackson Professor of History at Columbia University, as our guide. Let's get big picture and take stock. 2024, here we go.  Further Reading:Alan Brinkley, "The Problem of American Conservatism," The American Historical Review, Apr 1994. Kim Phillips Fein, "Conservatism: A State of the Field," The Journal of American History, Dec 2011. — Invisible Hands: The Businessmen's Crusade Against the New Deal (2010)— Fear City: New York's Fiscal Crisis and the Rise of Austerity Politics (2017)Rick Perlstein, "I Thought I Understood the American Right. “The three main factors are taste, price, and availability. Make sure things taste amazing, make sure it's affordable, and make it even more healthy.” —Alan Perlstein Cell-culture technology is unlocking new frontiers in food production by growing crops from single cells instead of plants. This novel approach allows us to see a new generation of "designer" foods engineered at the cellular level to promote wellness in tasty new ways. California Culture is pioneering the use of cell culture to grow cocoa and coffee from single cells, allowing them to produce chocolate and coffee with unprecedented health benefits. By cultivating cocoa cells in bioreactors, they can infuse chocolate with high levels of heart-healthy cocoa flavanols while removing lead and other toxins. Their vision is to make chocolate not only more delicious but also a secret weapon for cardiovascular health.   Listen in as California Culture CEO, Alan Perlstein shares how his background in biotechnology and entrepreneurship led him to this innovative idea, the health benefits of cocoa flavanols, and his vision to make chocolate healthier and more sustainable through this technology. Justine and Alan also talk about the potential of cellular agriculture in improving the food industry, the process of scaling your biz from lab to market, expanding distribution, making products more affordable, guiding principles for product development, and more. Meet Alan: Alan started working in a tiny cell-cultured fish lab in Long Island 17 years ago, back in the early days of cell-culture technology. He launched his first food tech company Joywell Foods (formerly Miraculex), where he commercialized protein-sweetened foods. When he saw tension brewing between the huge demand for chocolate and the sustainable/ethical issues surrounding it, he knew he had to look towards something bigger and thus, California Cultured was born.    Website  X Instagram LinkedIn YouTube TikTok   Connect with NextGen Purpose: Website Facebook Instagram  LinkedIn YouTube

A pioneer in food tech and climate, Alan's mission is to address the detrimental environmental impact of traditional food production.California Cultured is focusing on cell-cultured chocolate and coffee, aiming to revolutionize these industries. The process eliminates the need for vast tracts of land, reducing deforestation and carbon emissions. By contrast, cell-cultured products require minimal land use and produce significantly lower emissions.California Cultured's novel fermentation process not only enhances product flavor but also offers health benefits. This process is scalable and has already been successfully applied at industrial levels in plant cell culture, reaching up to 100,000 liters - around 5X the scale reached in large cell-cultured meat systems.Alan envisions a future where production of chocolate and coffee is domestic and local, drastically reducing the pollution from international shipping. Currently, a typical bar of chocolate travels over 5,000 miles before reaching a consumer, contributing to its carbon footprint.California Cultured's work represents a significant step towards a sustainable food industry. By offering consumers healthier and more environmentally friendly options, they are helping to shape a future where delicious food doesn't come at the expense of our planet.Visit cacultured.com to learn more! Watergate scandal, interlocking political scandals of the administration of U.S. Pres. Richard M. Nixon that were revealed following the arrest of five burglars at Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters in the Watergate office-apartment-hotel complex in Washington, D.C., on June 17, 1972. On August 9, 1974, facing likely impeachment for his role in covering up the scandal, Nixon became the only U.S. president to resign. Perlstein, R. (2023, June 28). Today's Republican party looks a lot different than it did just a few decades ago, but it rests on many of the same organizations and ideologies that formed the modern conservative movement in the 1970s. In this episode, Rick Perlstein joins us for a conversation about his newest book Reaganland: America's Right Turn, 1976-1980 and how Ronald Reagan, Orrin Hatch and other prominent Republicans were able to harness the social and political forces of the 1970s to form the modern GOP. Rick Perlstein is the award-winning author of multiple New York Times bestsellers, including Reaganland (Simon & Schuster, 2020), Nixonland: The Rise of a President and the Fracturing of America (Scribner, 2009) and Before the Storm: Barry Goldwater and the Unmaking of the American Consensus (Bold Type Books, 2009), as well as a board member at InTheseTimes.com. You can follow him on twitter at @RickPerlstein. In this conversation we also discussed Rick's recent article “This Is Us: Why the Trump Era Ended in Violence,” The New Republic, January 20, 2021. This is an edited rebroadcast of RTN #199, which originally aired on June 14, 2021. Both the original episode and this rebroadcast were edited by Gary Fletcher.

When Presidents Go to Trial

On Tuesday, April 4, former President Donald Trump was arrested and appeared in court for his arraignment in New York. The charges stem from hush money paid to Stormy Daniels in 2016, allegedly to cover up an extramarital affair. The entire case leads to larger questions about how democracies, where everyone is supposed to be equal under the law, do or don't hold their leaders to account. Guest host Ilya Marritz spoke with Rick Perlstein, a journalist, historian, and author of The Invisible Bridge: The Fall of Nixon and the Rise of Reagan, about perhaps the most famous case of a former US president alluding punishment. On September 8, 1974, President Gerald Ford pardoned his predecessor, Richard Nixon, who resigned from office one month earlier. The pardon rocked a nation still in the throes of the Watergate scandal, and perhaps permanently altered the trust of the public in the executive branch. But a quieter, separate movement had begun within the Republican Party. Perlstein explains how the groundwork for our struggle to prosecute, even the most guilty seeming presidents, can be traced back to that fateful fall day in 1974. This is a segment from our September 9, 2022 show, Lock Him Up?.
