This week on Open Sources Guelph, we don't take the law into our own hands, we go to court with some popcorn. On this episode, many of our news items intersect with justice matters as we talk about the deportation of a national pariah, the trial of a serial killer, a plea deal for a would-be mass murderer, and the unexpected result of a corruption trial in the U.S. Also, because a week can't go by without him sticking his foot in his mouth, we'll talk about Ontario's Premier. This Thursday, June 6, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: Diplomatic Doug. What was supposed to be a nice easy photo op at Sanofi's new manufacturing plant turned into the latest embarrassment for Ontario when Premier Doug Ford dabbled in some *light* racism while responding to a shooting at a north Toronto Jewish girls' school. It's the latest hit against Ford and his government, but despite that the PCs are still fundraising up a storm and talk of an early election has still not gone away. We will talk about the latest Ford follies. Crash Ban, Deport. The 2018 car accident that killed 16 people and injured 13 more from the Humboldt Broncos hockey team has a big tragedy for a Saskatchewan community. Jaskirat Singh Sidhu was the truck driver responsible for the crash, and he's taken responsibility and plead guilty to having caused the crash, but now he faces deportation to India. Calgary Liberal MP George Chahal wants to fight it, but is it possible to find compassion for a man in spite of the circumstances? Law & Order. In Winnipeg, Jeremy Skibicki is currently on trial for the murder of several Indigenous women in the area, some of whom have not yet had their remains recovered, and this on the fifth anniversary of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls report. Meanwhile, up the road in Waterloo, Geovanny Villalba-Aleman has plead guilty to a stabbing attack supposedly driven by his belief in conspiracies around gender identity. Is justice being served? 34 For 34. After five weeks of trial and testimony, it took a New York City jury less than 10 hours to decide that Donald Trump is guilty of election interference for trying to cover up a one night stand with an adult film star. The historic occasion of the first former president becoming a convicted felon was somewhat muted by Republican defiance, but accusations of political bias in the Justice Department is hard to sell when the new trial this week involves the current president's son. So what next? Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday.

In a tragedy that shook Canada and the rest of the hockey playing world, just before 5:00pm on April 6, 2018, the team bus of the Humboldt Broncos Junior Hockey team smashed into a semi that had just blown through a stop at the intersection of Saskatchewan highways 35 and 335. Of the the 29 people on the bus that day, only 13 survived. The truck driver walked away unharmed, and was later charged with and convicted of 16 counts of dangerous driving causing death and 13 more counts of dangerous driving causing injury.  One player, 21-year-old defenseman Logan Boulet, had signed his donor card only 5 weeks before the crash and his death. His thoughtful gift saved the lives of six organ recipients. Logan’s selfless actions led droves of other Canadians to sign their donor cards, creating what has been called the #LoganBouletEffect. This remains the largest number of donors pledging their organs from a single event; 100,000 in the first three weeks. To keep the effect going his family helped to create Green Shirt Day in 2019, observed on April 7, the anniversary of Logan’s passing.  Sources and Further Reading: [Humboldt Broncos] [Humboldt Broncos bus crash - Wikipedia] [9 Apr 2018, NP1 - The National Post at Newspapers.com] [Home - Green Shirt Day] [Green Shirt Day - Home | Facebook] [Green Shirt Day (@GreenShirtDay) | Twitter] [Green Shirt Day (@greenshirtday) • Instagram photos and videos] [Report On Intersection Review | Government of Saskatchewan] [ER doctor recalls Humboldt Broncos crash response - YouTube] [Rod Stewart pays tribute to Humboldt Broncos | Globalnews.ca] [Logan Boulet taken off life support, organs donated  | Globalnews.ca] [COVID-19 forcing Green Shirt Day campaign changes | Global News] [Agreed statement of facts - Humboldt Broncos bus crash] [Guilty plea in Humboldt Broncos bus crash  | Globalnews.ca] [Driver in Humboldt crash wasn’t distracted | CBC News] [Adam Herold Legacy Foundation] [SEARCH: Global News Humboldt - YouTube] [Swift Current Broncos bus crash - Wikipedia] R v Sidhu, 2019 SKPC 19 (CanLII), < [http://canlii.ca/t/hzbj5] > Support the show.

When it comes to vehicular killings in this country, we aren't serious enough. Jaskirat Singh Sidhu was given eight years for killing 16 people in the Humboldt bus crash last year. Six months per life taken. In legal circles this is considered a tough sentence, but considering he is eligible for parole after only three years, the sentence seems much too soft.

Trucking News with Ruthann is filled with Trucking Stories every week. This week a burning Trailer that was stolen. Driver gets arrested, Smuggling illegals in a semi truck and an update on the Canadian hockey team that was killed by a trucker. Illegals in a semi truck   One reason, experts say, is that entering the United States from Mexico illegally involves "two crossings." You must first cross the U.S./Mexico border, then one of the many Border Patrol checkpoints that exist farther into the United States. Semi on fire by the road That double crossing "has increased the incentives for smugglers to operate in different ways, and on different sides of the border," says Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera, who researches immigration and border security at UT Rio Grande Valley. "I would even say that it's probably easier to get past the first barrier, to get in the country" says Albert Flores, a San Antonio criminal defense lawyer who represents clients in human smuggling cases. "But once you're in the country, most of the South Texas border is uninhabitable," Flores says. Smugglers then face a challenge to get migrants through checkpoints that are farther inland. Since border enforcement has increased in the last few years, Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera says, more smugglers and immigrants may gravitate to transportation by truck. Trucks provide anonymity on busy Texas highways, and packing people together means the risk is concentrated and profits are greater for smugglers. http://now8news.com/semi-truck-caught-smuggling-100-illegal-immigrants-in-dead-cow-carcasses-at-laredo-texas-bord http://www.foxnews.com/world/2018/04/07/victims-slowly-identified-in-canadian-hockey-team-bus-crash-disaster-death-toll-rises-to-15.html The driver of a semi-trailer that collided with a bus in an April crash that killed 16 people involved with a Canadian youth hockey team was arrested on criminal charges Friday, authorities said. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, 29, was detained at his home in Calgary, Alberta, and would appear in a provincial court in Saskatchewan next week. He faces 16 counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and 13 counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily injury. The crash occurred in Saskatchewan on April 6 as the bus was taking the Humboldt Broncos hockey team to a playoff game. Thirteen people were injured. The truck driver had been initially detained after the crash but he was later released and provided with mental health assistance. He was not injured.
