Thanks to our Partner, NAPA Auto Care Michael Smith discusses the need for a language and mindset shift to elevate the perception of automotive professionals. The conversation highlights the transition from viewing independent shops as "mom and pop" operations to recognizing them as sophisticated businesses led by "solopreneurs" or "mechanical and technology specialists." Michael also introduces the concept of psycholinguistics, explaining how the words we use shape our beliefs and self-perception. For instance, identifying oneself as a "mechanic" can reinforce a limited self-image, trapping individuals in a cycle that hinders growth and innovation. To break free from this cycle, there must be a conscious effort to change the language used within the industry. Michael Smith, The Institute. Jason Sikora pictured with Butch Roussel during a recording of Discover Lafayette Podcast. But many of you may not know his interesting back story, or how he came to live and work in Lafayette LA. A native of Detroit, Michigan and graduate of the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, Jason has a rich collection of memories to share and insights into how rock concerts are orchestrated. Jason's dad worked for Ford Motor Company in Detroit, but when Jason and his two brothers were young, the family moved to Hartland, Michigan to be able to escape the city life and its accompanying declining socio-economic factors in the 1980s. Describing Hartland as "basically a truck stop," it was much more. Jason graduated from Hartland High School, playing drums in its marching band and eventually serving as the Hartland Eagles' mascot. Sadly, Jason's younger brother, Kris, died when he was 11 years old, from a blood disorder. Kris' life and death had great meaning, however, as researchers were able to study his condition. Jason stated that today, people with Kris' condition would survive. Upon graduation from high school, Jason hightailed it to Hollywood, California to attend the Musicians Institute ("MI"), a college that was known as a 'player's school,' meaning that students were taught the skills to make a sustainable career in the music industry. While many young people could qualify to be a guitar tech based upon their self-taught abilities, Jason credited MI for a valuable education and teaching him guitar repair and cable management. " I started playing guitar in 6th grade, so I had six to seven years of experience with signal flow, how to solder microphones back together. I learned a lot in high school with my band, messing with pedals and guitars and amplifiers. I did learn guitar repair, cable management and how to get tone while in college at MI." Andy Brauer hired Jason right after graduation from MI, to work at his shop that specialized in instrument and musical gear rentals. Jason had the good fortune to work with Faith Hill in his very first gig, being hired to work at Skywalker Ranch to assist in recording track sessions. "I got to hang out with the best musicians in the world for a week: Mike Landau, Dean Parks, Paul Bushnell, and Vinnie Calaiuta are monster players!" Jason also got to witness the regular lives of performers such as Faith Hill, her husband, Tim McGraw, and their children, and realized how fortunate he was to be a part of this experience in the ordinary lives of superstars as the album was being cut. Jason then met Michael Lockwood, a guitarist who hired him to be a touring guitar tech for Aimee Mann, performing sound checks and restringing guitars, ensuring that all would go well during concerts. Jason would continue this type of work for several years, working with greats such as Lisa Marie Presley, Britney Spears, and the Goo Goo Dolls, as well as other acts during what he calls his 'lost years from 2004 to 2006', such as Hanson, Gerard McMahon, Puddle of Mudd, and the recording of "A Mighty Wind," an album accompanying a movie of the same name, featuring Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer, Michael McKean, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Jennifer Coolidge and many other staples of comedy culture of the time. "The work ethic is very different when you're on the road. You're not allowed to be sick. The show must go on. If there is a half million dollar guarantee and there are 10,000 people out there, your rig has to work. There was always a doctor out there with water, vitamins, and oxygen. You have to do the show. There's no back-up. No one else would know my rig," says Jason Sikora. Asked if he missed traveling on the road for months as a time as a guitar tech,
In this episode, Jason sits down with Brian Dubreuil, one of the magician's behind customer success and support here at QA Cafe. They chat about Wi-Fi, being an extension of our customers teams, and why The Princess Bride is the greatest movie of all time.

Think of the power of this language change when we speak to high school and post-secondary students about our trade. We have one of the most technology-driven skilled trades that can use this high dose of professionalism internally and externally. We dive deep into crafting a new standard language for auto repair specialists. It's not just about technical jargon; it's about creating clear, precise, and universally understood communication that benefits everyone in the industry, mostly our clients. Imagine a world where every technician, service advisor, and customer speaks the same automotive language. Respect, clarity, confidence, and trust would skyrocket between service providers and clients. Crafting the New Lexicon The journey to creating a new language standard is an entire industry endeavor. It requires collaboration and consensus from all corners. Everyone's input is valuable, from the seasoned veterans to the fresh faces just starting their careers. Their expertise and experience will be the cornerstone of developing a practical and forward-thinking language. The automotive industry is not static; it's a dynamic field that is constantly advancing. Our new language must be adaptable and evolve with emerging technologies and repair techniques. The Road Ahead The road to a new language standard will be challenging. However, the rewards promise to be significant. By committing to this endeavor, we're not just changing our language but elevating the entire auto repair experience. Alan Gayton: Technology Director, Sci-Fi Enthusiast, and Barbecue Competitor. This is episode 628 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Alan Gayton is a 51-year-old IT geek who has been playing with computers since he was a kid stealing software on a Commodore 64. He started his career as the first Technology Specialist for Gordon County Schools, where he had the dubious honor of fixing the computers and switches that always broke down. He then became an Instructional Technology Specialist, where he had to deal with endless questions such as “What does ‘click here' mean?” He is now the Director of Technology for the North Georgia RESA, where he has the daunting task of managing the technology needs and issues of the RESA and its 5-member school districts. When he is not glued to his screen or phone, Alan likes to pretend that he is a pitmaster and a martial arts expert. He competes in competition BBQ as one half of team Q-Inator!, which is a clever name that he came up with after watching too much Phineas and Ferb. He and his partner have won some trophies and ribbons in various categories, but they are still far from being the best of the best. Alan also practices karate, which he learned from watching Karate Kid and Cobra Kai. He has a black belt, which he bought online (or maybe earned at UKS Karate), and he likes to show off his moves to anyone who will watch. Alan is always willing to help or teach someone something new, as long as they don't ask too many questions or challenge his authority. He is a proud father of two children who are smarter and more talented than him, and a loyal husband to his wife who puts up with his antics. He lives in Calhoun, Georgia, where he enjoys the fresh air and the peaceful surroundings. Alan's Brunswick Stew Recipe MEAT: ½ lb smoked pork ½ lb smoked beef ½ lb smoked chicken OR 1 can Castleberry BBQ Pork 1 can Castleberry BBQ Beef ! lrg can Chunk Chicken 2 cans cream corn 2 cans petite diced tomatoes 1 bottle Chili sauce ¼ cup favorite bbq sauce (more or less to taste) Hot sauce to taste Salt and pepper to taste Mix all in crock pot and cook on high for around 4 hours or on low for around 8. A few notes: Meat To get it to turn out more like mine, you will need to use smoked meat and run it through a grinder with a large-holed plate. It will still be great if you don't, but it does give it that more authentic texture Home smoked meat is best, but you can also get it from a local bbq restaurant If you decide to use canned, it is getting hard to find the Castleberry's products in stores (particularly the beef) but you can probably use other brands or shop online. Feel free to add other veggies to make it how you like. Awesome conversation! Had so much fun! Enjoy it! Before you go... Could you do me a favor? On the latest episode of the WGI Unleashed podcast, we get to know Mark Topping, a Geospatial Technology Specialist III based out of our Huntsville, AL office. Mark, a member of the WGI Geospatial division, joined our team a little over a year ago as part of WGI's acquisition of The Atlantic Group, LLC. In this unique episode, Mark gave us the privilege of being WGI Unleashed's first international guest, as we discovered that he resides in Canada for the majority of the year when not traveling for work. Getting to know Mark throughout our conversation, he expressed what it was like to grow up in the second-largest country in the world, just outside of the dynamic metropolis of Toronto, and also shared some of the geographical and cultural likenesses and differences between living in Canada versus the United States. Referring to himself as your "stereotypical Canadian," he jokingly shared that he was born with hockey skates on and grew up participating in all of the winter sports that the country had to offer, such as hockey, skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling. We learned that Mark attended college in Ontario at the University of Guelph, where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography and History, and we also had the pleasure of hearing the hilarious tale of how he decided on the University of Guelph in the first place. Spoiler alert, it had nothing to do with academics. Mark discovered remote sensing during his time in college. Upon graduating, Mark decided that he wished to pursue geographic applications of remote sensing technology with his father, who had been engaged in engineering work for a local lidar sensor manufacturer. In his time working as a Flight Operations Specialist and later as a Training and Delivery Manager for one of the industry's largest builders of lidar equipment, Mark established and solidified his passion for airborne surveying. It was at this time in Mark's young career that he met and trained the folks at the Atlantic Group, a major geospatial service provider in the southeast. Mark and the Atlantic Group worked so well together that he found himself joining the team and, shortly thereafter, joining WGI through the firm's acquisition. And the rest, they say, is history. As our conversation went on, we gained an overview of Mark's role and responsibilities in his position with us here at WGI and were also clued in on a few of the cool perks of his job, such as getting to travel to remote, untouched regions in areas like the Grand Canyon National Park, the Amazon Rain Forrest, and even Borneo! And when he's not globetrotting to collect aerial lidar data, Mark can be found playing softball with his coed recreational team, visiting new places with his wife, and hanging out with his Sheltie dog Winston. And if that's not enough... Since recording this episode of the WGI Unleashed podcast, Mark has also joined the new Dad's Club! So, as could be imagined, his spare time is now mostly spent changing diapers, making bottles, and snuggling with his adorable newborn daughter at every chance he gets. What are you waiting for? Go give the latest episode of WGI Unleashed a listen now - you know you want to. This is your chance to get a peek behind the curtain as Mark reveals the unique way fate stepped in to help him meet his wife, shares about the rare oral condition he has to be extra cognizant of now that he has a baby, and so much more!
