Andy rides solo this week, welcoming a close friend, Jay Perry, founder of Friends With Hearts - a global community of friends working together to restore the magic of Christmas to families in need. They reminisce of they’re trip to Haiti, as well as discuss so societal norms and labels, and what compassion and humanity looks like at its core.
Jay Perry is a Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, based professional photographer specializing in creative and commercial projects. Having began his career in 2009 as a nightlife photographer, Jay was able to rapidly expand his portfolio to include prominent artists such as Snoop Dogg, Usher and Gwen Stefani, as well as clients such as the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Raptors, GO Transit and Boston Pizza. Additionally, while traveling to Haiti during the aftermath of its devastating 2010 earthquake, Jay shot a series of photos capturing the country’s resilience – of which he produced the award-winning photo ‘Kettenie-Love‘. Armed with the belief that raw emotion trumps technical perfection, Jay brings an open mind to his projects alongside an unwavering commitment toward the satisfaction of his diverse clients. Looking ahead, Jay will expand into experimental portraiture, creating unique characters from ordinary, every day people, as well as continue his passion project, ‘Friends With Hearts‘, in an effort to support underprivileged families in the community. Instagram – @jayperry Twitter – @jayperry Founder at (Friends With Hearts) and Owner at Jay Perry https://www.facebook.com/fwHearts/about/?ref=page_internal About Helping families unwrap hope for the Holidays | We believe every family, regardless of circumstance, deserves to know the magic of Christmas. Additional Information We are not a registered charity; we are a community of friends working in conjunction with Good Shepherd in Hamilton to restore the magic of Christmas for families in need. According to a report released in 2012 by the Hamilton Community Foundation, there are some neighbourhoods within Hamilton where poverty rates are at less than 6% and others where it hovers at more than 40%. For many families, this means that Christmas morning will be absent of gifts, including basic necessities and the small luxuries that characterize the excitement of the season. This is where Friends With Hearts finds its purpose. By raising funds on behalf of Good Shepherd to go toward their holiday sponsorship program, we are able to support families who are enduring difficult circumstances and offer hope to the children who feel it the most. This week, we will be changing the topic slightly to talk about how recent events in our world have raised our collective awareness about unconscious bias and how we can use this awareness as leaders to be the change we want to see in the world.

Jay Perry is the Founder and CEO of Ally Business Coaching, co-author of Success Manifesto with Brian Tracy, and a certified Birkman consultant. He joins Marcel Schwantes to discuss leadership, communication, and perceptions. This episode is proudly sponsored by Ally Business Coaching. Visit them at www.allybusinesscoaching.com “Leadership is simple in theory but tricky in execution,” Jay says. He defines leadership as helping people towards being the best version of themselves. Before they are able to do so, however, leaders must first be their best selves. They can then transfer the knowledge and guidance they received to those in their care in order to help them work on their varying strengths. [8:22] There will always be emotional content once there is interaction with people. Jay says that everyone has an optimal state at which they are at their best. The leader’s responsibility is to help people reach and maintain that optimal state. Having respect for each other’s strengths and weaknesses is crucial in building an optimized team. [11:30] Marcel asks Jay what characteristics people should be looking for in leaders during this time of crisis and they discuss how leaders must communicate with clarity and urgency, setting the right expectations. [15:25] There is a prevalence of assumptions during communication: we assume we understand what people mean and their intentions. When someone asks us a question, we stop actively listening when our minds automatically go into solution mode and search for an answer that we assume we have. Additionally, we all have a bias and approach all situations through one perspective, which affects how we interact with others and handle situations. Creativity flourishes when we can control our biases and get to a place of learning. [16:43] Marcel asks Jay about the obstacles that hold leaders back. According to Jay, ego is a large hurdle that leaders must overcome. Other obstacles include assumption-making, a lack of clarity, and addressing realities instead of perceptions. “A person’s perception is more important than their reality,” Jay says. If you perceive something as a threat, you will behave as if you are threatened. [23:26] Marcel asks Jay why he thinks some leaders still lead through fear. “We underestimate the power of fear,” Jay replies. It runs deeper than simply holding us back; leaders themselves are fearful of leading through a way that is unfamiliar to them, and so they continue to use fear as a method of leadership. [27:51] The desired characteristics that the follower group wants their leadership to have include authenticity, confidence and modesty, and leading by example. Furthermore, leadership must be responsive to change, but hold fast to their core values. A good question leaders can ask themselves as a “self-check” is whether they are making those around them more powerful. Award-winning Canadian photographer Jay Perry dodged burning cars in Haiti after the country's devastating 2010 earthquake, he's had Haitian rebels point their guns in his direction and he's driven across the country in a cramped van eating and drinking off four dollars a day. But watching his father slip away from cancer was harder than any of those ordeals. Jay tells us why, and he talks about his book, "My Dad Got Sick: Love and Insights From a Caregiver's Unexpected Journey Through Cancer," an emotional account of interrupting his skyrocketing career at age thirty-one to help his father battle terminal cancer. Jay shares the non-traditional medicine practices incorporated into his dad's daily routine. He opens up about the anxiety of being in debt after leaving the workforce to care for his dad and explains why it was worth it. Jay also tells us about his mission trip to Haiti and how his photograph “Kettenie-Love” changed both his life and the life of the little girl in the photo. Canadian photographer Jay Perry was thirty-one years old when his father was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Jay's business was just taking off, with a portfolio that included artists Snoop Dogg, Usher and Gwen Stefani, but he decided to stop working and move in with his parents to help care for and spend time with his dad. On the show he talks about the experience chronicled in his book, “My Dad Got Sick: Love and Insights From a Caregiver's Unexpected Journey Through Cancer.” Jay tells us why it was all worth it, but also frankly shares his anxiety about being in debt from taking two years off from work, why he made himself vulnerable by sharing his cancer journey with his dad on social media and why he didn't take a lot of photos or make any videos of his dad before his death. Told he had nine months to live, Jay's father continued to baffle doctors two years after his diagnosis. Jay also tells us about his mission trip to Haiti and “Kettenie-Love,” a photograph he took during the trip that changed both Jay's life and the little girl in the photo, and about his project Friends With Hearts. To purchase a transcript of this episode please visit this page: TranscriptsExplore Jay's book, “My Dad Got Sick” Jay's website The story behind “Kettenie-Love” More about the project Friends With Hearts Music: “Melancholia” by Dlay | CC BY NC ND | Free Music Archive
