After five months of debate and debauchery, Colorado's state lawmakers wrapped up the 2025 legislative session in Denver on Wednesday. So what passed? What failed? And what is Governor Polis going to veto next? Our capitol insider Deep Singh Badhesha was there for all the madness, and he's on today's Friday news roundup with host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi to give us the scoop. Then, the advocacy group YIMBY Denver has a new survey out showing broad support for more housing, but the numbers show a more complicated picture. And of course, our wins and fails of the week. You can check out the cross-tabs for the YIMBY Denver survey for yourself. Bree mentioned FLOCK cameras, a DoorDasher in detention, and the immigration support group Casa de Paz. Paul talked about Clever Girl at Zeppelin Station and a prized green chile recipe. Deep discussed the Nuggets big loss against Oklahoma and the judge who extended a restraining order against the Trump administration in a local immigration case. Paul also talked about Hold On to Your Butts, his new Jurassic Park rewatch podcast with friend of the show JD Lopez, which you can subscribe to on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and anywhere else you listen to podcasts. It's Friday, and we're rounding up the biggest stories of the week. First, Aurora councilwoman Danielle Jurinsky made an appearance at Trump's rally at the Gaylord last Friday, now she claims she's in possession of “haunting” video related to Venezuelan gang activity and is calling for an investigation into Denver Mayor Mike Johnston. Then, a reddit thread popped up with some wild urban legends about the Mile High City. Are any of them true? Producer Paul Karolyi, host Bree Davies, and producer Olivia Jewell Love dig into the lore, speculate about Jurinsky's video, and share their wins and fails of the week. Our fall campaign is happening now! It takes a lot to keep City Cast Denver and Hey Denver running strong. Your membership helps us cover the cost of bringing you the local stories you care about. If you believe in what we do, become a member of City Cast Denver today. Every member makes a difference! Paul spoke in more detail about his experience at the Trump rally on friend of the show JD Lopez's podcast Left Hand Right Brain. He also talked about CBS's 2023 report on Denver sending newcomers to Aurora, the mysterious building at Denver Federal Center, new business filings, and a big pumpkin. Olivia talked about some great voter guides for suburban elections and MAKfam. Bree mentioned our episodes about those “We Buy Ugly Houses” signs and Denver's old Chinatown, as well as the Broadway Halloween Parade this weekend. What should we ask Mayor Johnston next week? Something about the election? How he feels about the Broncos' rookie quarterback? His favorite new donut shop? We would love to put your questions to him directly. Welcome to Episode 241 of Broadcast Geeks! On this podcast we discuss all things pop culture provided that our DVR's have space and our streaming accounts are paid up. This week, the Geeks (Mitch, Jake, and Matt Orrin) are virtually together to discuss all things geek. JD Lopez joins us this week, as where the title of our episode comes from. While we discuss the MCU with him, he asks us the important questions...such as our bottom 3 films. Is it easier to name our bottom 3 than our top 3? After, we dive a bit into the Vel Johnson-verse, where his character from Die Hard is the cop in Family Matters. What other shows get tied in? Of all Denver's great holiday traditions, there's only one carefully crafted to drive whiskey lovers wild. Local distiller Stranahan's started selling small batches of “Snowflake” whiskeys way back in 2007. But in the last few years, the Snowflake has taken on a lore of its own as aficionados camp out for days next to the distillery, just for the chance to get a bottle of that year's unique, limited-edition recipe. This year, Stranahan's decided to do things a little differently, turning the low-key campout into a full-fledged blowout at Red Rocks, complete with food trucks and live music. City Cast Denver correspondent JD Lopez — host of the Left Hand Right Brain podcast — headed over to the amphitheater's parking lot at the crack of dawn to talk to Colorado's whiskey tailgaters and find out what makes the Snowflake blend good enough to wait in line for. Plus, our VOICE on the Street segment is back — this time, we hear from Denver VOICE street paper vendor Brian Augustine, who talks candidly about why he loves being out in the community. In a city that's been grappling with affordable housing issues for years, Denver landlords seem to hold all the power. Councilperson Stacie Gilmore wants to change that dynamic, with a new proposal that would strengthen renter protections and require landlords to be more accountable for their properties. Stacie is on the show today to talk through her proposal, including her personal motivation for getting it passed. The City Council is set to discuss her rental licensing proposal tonight (and vote on it next Monday), so now is the time to find your representative and make your voice heard! Plus, City Cast Denver contributor JD Lopez attended the Save Casa Bonita rally on Saturday morning to hear more about the community effort to make sure the old pink palace sticks around. Get the rest of the story in our April 15th episode, “Inside the Fight to Save Casa Bonita.” For more on that rental in Green Valley Ranch that Councilperson Gilmore mentioned, here's the first report about it, from CBS4 in 2019. And here's the CBS4 follow-up about what happened to the family that lived there.

Another episode of Werewolf Radar has tricked you into the crawl space by mimicking the sounds of a trapped kitten and now you are stuck in here with it! In this episode Denver podcastronaut extraordinaire, JD Lopez of Left Hand Right Brain, guides the crew of the radar through the treacherous, demon-haunted forest of a Hispanic Catholic adolesence. You will hear tales of drunk assholes getting their comeuppance from demonic (angelic?) enforcers, discover what it takes to get into demon hunting, and find out the awful truth behind the clandestine mating rituals that take place in Witch-Alley. Join us, as the crew gets to know JD, and all four of us eventually get to know a terrifying entity known only as the Monterey Witch.
