Born and raised in Franklin, TN, the Orrall brothers grew up in the south just like any other kid in the 90's. The family would eventually relocate to Nashville for their father's work in the music industry and it would be a matter of time time that Jake and his brother Jamin started their own scene. Jeff The Brotherhood formed in 2001 as a powerhouse duo of psychedelia and punk. Launching their own label, Infinity Cat Recordings to house their prolific output of muisc, the band quickly became one of the most important groups in the last 20 years in the DYI scene. Influencing so many artists around the world, JTB are legends and have left an important mark on independent music. In this episode of the podcast we explore Jake's youth growing up with his brother in the south, his musical influences, relocating to Nashville and forming JTB, moving to New Orleans, a new JEFF record and much more!
Garage punk two piece Teen Mortgage climbed out of Washington DC's primordial hardcore soup in 2017. Drenched in the left - over fuzz and sludge of their local scene, the duo quickly bulldozed their way to a regional reputation after assaulting the publics' ears on incessant east coast tours and opening for notable bands such as Ron Gallo, Surf Curse, Big Business, Alex Lahey, The Chats, Bass Drum of Death, JEFF The Brotherhood, Mike Krol, The Coathangers, Meatbodies etc. In June 2019, Teen Mortgage sicced their ruthless EP "Life/Death" on the world through Brooklyn, NY's King Pizza Records. It has since sold out its limited cassette run and album cuts have earned sync deals with Vans Shoes, Evil Bikes, and Showtime series Shameless. The album also gained recognition as recipients of multiple 2020 Wammies (The Washington Area Music Awards) for Best Punk Band and Best Punk Song for "Falling Down." Teen Mortgage, return post pandemic with “Smoked”, their sophomore release through greasy Brooklyn cassette slingers, King Pizza Records. Once again, the duo are back to smack you over the head with seething surf punk riffs setting the scene to explain this cultural wasteland they call America. Live performances by Teen Mortgage, digital beat bumpers provided by Fat Kneel

I am totally psyched to welcome today’s guest. He is a Grammy award-winning mixer, and owner of the beautiful (and newly relocated) Sputnik Sound. He has a long discography of accomplished records including artists like Keb Mo, Jars Of Clay, Jack White and 3rd Man Records, Buddy Guy, Kings Of Leon, Danger Mouse, Sturgill Simpson and some well known local artists: Moon Taxi, Bobby Bare Jr, and Jeff The Brotherhood (who lives right down the street from me in fact). Our guest originally hails from the town of Joplin MO which most people mistake as being named after the Ragtime Pianist Scott Joplin, but was in fact named after its founder the Reverend Joplin. And other than being mentioned in Bobby Troup’s legendary song “Route 66”, the town of Joplin MO, which gained notoriety for mining Zinc, may owe its biggest musical credit to our guest on today’s show. I met him back in 2002 when he became the head engineer for the incredible Blackbird Studios, right here in the city of Berry Hill a part of Nashville often referred to as the new music row with over 20 recording studios in a 3 mile radius. My guest today is Collin Dupuis a Nashville and Detroit based multi Grammy-nominated and two time Grammy-winning mixer, producer, and engineer. Collin has developed a sought after sound over the last fifteen years working with critically acclaimed artists and projects including Angel Olsen, Lana Del Rey,St. Vincent, Dr. John, The Black Keys, and many others. Beginning his career playing in bands, running a DIY recording studio in Michigan, and doing tech work around the Detroit area, he quickly found himself working at FBT (The Bass Brothers) studio as an assistant engineer. From there, he cut his teeth working with artists and producers of the likes of Mr. Porter, Eminem, Pharoahe Monch, and many more. He soon got a call to set up a studio at Jack White's house and help out on the White Stripes’ “Get Behind Me Satan.” Shortly after that, Collin was hired over at Carl Craig’s Planet-E records. He engineered for the next five years alongside Carl on remixes, production, live sound in Europe, mastering, and mixing. Collin next got the call from Dan Auerbach to help him get his Akron studio up and running. This led to a move to Nashville and many critically acclaimed albums working as the lead engineer at Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound. During his time at Easy Eye Sound he earned a Grammy win for engineering and mixing Dr. John’s “Locked Down”. Along with a Grammy win for engineering Cage The Elephants “Tell Me I Pretty”. Currently, Collin is busy working as a freelance mixer and engineer, producing, recording, and mixing albums for artists including Angel Olsen, Jeff The Brotherhood, Nikki Lane, Rayland Baxter, and many others. "Goodnight Brooklyn" is a fantastic documentary about beloved Brooklyn venue Death By Audio. Host Peter Agoston spoke with the filmmakers, director Matt Conboy and producer Amanda Schultz candidly about its making as well as a history of the showspace itself. Having brought countless shows there as an agent, Agoston recounts some of the bands booked there in the intro, namely JEFF The Brotherhood, Arto Lindsay, Sun Araw, Fergus & Geronimo, Matthewdavid, Crocodiles, and several more. We delve into Conboy's own musical history, having played in numerous bands himself. The venue was a mainstay from 2007 to 2014 before closing in November of that year (Glasslands and 285 Kent, venues on the same city-block also vacating) to make room for Vice Media. This is a must listen if you ever enjoyed or performed shows at this great NYC music venue. "Goodnight Brooklyn" is also available on iTunes and Vimeo in the U.S. and Canada, with wider release to follow. Roger started out in Cliffside Park NJ with a view of Manhattan recording bands in his basement studio before attending the Institute of Audio Research in New York and landing a job at Skyline Studios in 1975. During his time at Skyline Roger recorded many important artists including Laurie Anderson, They Might Be Giants, and 10,000 Maniacs. Making the inevitable shift to freelance Roger began working at Chung King House of Metal with Run DMC, Heavy D, and Stetsasonic, and also recording greats from the the NY jazz scene John Zorn, Bill Frisell, and Don Byron. Moving to Nashville TN in the 90s I first met Roger when he was mixing Jill Sobule at Woodland Studios where I was interning. And then we got a chance to work together at Alex The Great studio owned by Robin Eaton and Brad Jones recording a cool indi band Toy Bean. In 1993 Roger produced Painful, for the college radio favorites Yo La Tengo, which began a long relationship with the band going on to record seven full length albums. These included the critically acclaimed albums I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One in 1997, and 2000’s And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out. Roger continued to make records in both Nashville and NY until building his own Haptown Studio, where we are today. He has a long list of credits which include: producing Paula Cole’s double platinum, Grammy Nominated album, This Fire, Joseph Arthur, Lambchop, Josh Rouse, Jefferson Airplane/ Hot Tuna guitarist Jorma Kaukonen, Lou Reed, Rosanne Cash, John Cale, Jeff The Brotherhood, Son Volt, Mindy Smith, Cheap Trick, Gillian Welch, and John Mayer. The list goes on...
Nashville rock band JEFF the Brotherhood started as brothers Jake and Jamin Orrall back in 2001 when the guys were in high school. Six records later, the band was signed to multinational record label Warners, but JTB were dropped just days before their second record for Warners (Wasted on the Dream) was due to be released. I hung out with the Orrall brothers outside the Biltmore last time they were in town. You can hear the touring members of JEFF the Brotherhood and the band Bully partying in the background as we talk. How do you make sure you get drunk enough to stay loose on stage, but not too drunk and sloppy? What does "The star was the beef" mean? How much did Diarrhea Planet get paid to play on Wasted on the Dream? Which song does rock veteran Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull play on? Is it true Jake gave up smoking pot? What is Kalimotxo and when do you drink it? Listen to our hilarious chat for all the answers. Tracks played on the show... 1) JEFF the Brotherhood, Wasted on the Dream (2015) "Black Cherry Pie" 2) JEFF the Brotherhood, Hypnotic Nights (2012) "Sixpack" (background) 3) JEFF the Brotherhood, Wasted on the Dream (2015) "Coat Check Girl" 4) JEFF the Brotherhood, Castle Storm (2006) "Gemstone" 5) JEFF the Brotherhood, Wasted on the Dream (2015) "Prairie Song" NO songs CANCON

Vance is now also co-owner of Sputnik Sound. Early Life: Vance was introduced to electronics early in his childhood, as his grandfather was an electrical engineer and miner. He later attended electronic school while in high school. This helped him to land a job as a second audio engineer in a local studio – Massey Studios – in Missouri where he worked for $5/hour learning and teaching himself the arts of mixing, and other tools of the trade like tape duplication (i.e. mastering). This marked the beginning of his successful career as an audio mix engineer. Reference Monitors: Auratone Monitors are speakers designed to listen to mono mixes. Yamaha NS10’s later became the replacement for Auratone reference monitors. “…I use NS10s (Yamaha) because they sound cool… and they will translate well in any situation.” –Vance Powell “It’s all about your reference… It doesn’t matter what your speakers are,” says Powell. “I have definitely made changes to a mix based on a mono iPhone speaker. When asked how one is able to hear the bass on a mono iPhone speaker he says simply “turn the bass off and then back on.” Jam Session: Q: What is the best advice you have for someone just starting out? A: You have to be fearless to make it in this business. If you are a person who is afraid of change, or afraid of failing, or afraid of losing your house… you’re normal, but if you are afraid and act upon it because you are afraid, you’re not going to last. Q: What was a time where you feel you hit a real point of failure or a time you felt like giving up that turned out to be a valuable learning experience for you. A: A year after I moved to Nashville, I did my first session and I had no idea what these people were wanting or doing. In some ways that was an interesting failure but I’ve been very lucky in that I don’t have anything I can really point out and say, “that was a disaster.” Q: I definitely know you for working with a lot of artists that like to push the boundaries and really get to the heart of what makes something great. You want to tell us a little bit about that? A: Obviously, I’ve spent 8 years working with Jack white and that’s been an incredibly eye-opening thing because he’s pretty amazing. He’s probably the most talented person I’ve ever been around. He’s one my favorite drummers…ever. He’s my favorite keyboard player, pianist and organist. He’s the easiest artist I’ve ever had to get a guitar sound for. It doesn’t matter what amp he plays, it doesn’t matter what guitar, it doesn’t matter how old the strings are it doesn’t matter what microphone you put in front of it, it sounds just like him. It’s all in his hands. He’s an amazing vocalist. Q: What is a tip about the process of recording that you learned while working with artists like Jack White? A: Learn to be fast. I think anybody learning this business should do live sound. Live sound teaches you a bunch of things. You have to put a mix together in a very short period of time. You don’t have all day. You have one song to put a killer 48-channel mix together; otherwise you’re going to lose people. Q: If you were dropped into a strange city and you were going to start out in recording or live sound, what advice would you have for someone who’s willing to take on that challenge? A: If you want to record, the first thing you need to do is purchase some way to record such as a laptop and an interface or port-a-studio. Then go find a band that you are willing to do what ever it takes to help them out. That means cart their gear around, do live sound for them, or record demos in your basement. Get yourself 4 good microphones. You can pretty much record a band with 4 or 5 good microphones. Don’t let the technology get in the way of creativity. I have a rule for my own productions and that is: my entire record has to fit inside 32 tracks. Don’t be afraid to make a decision; that’s the number one thing I’d say to anyone first starting out. Helmed by brothers Jake and Jamin Orrall, JEFF the Brotherhood has spent the last 15 years exploring the realms of garage rock, proto-metal and heavy prog. The Nashville-based band released Wasted on the Dream this year on their own Infinity Cat label, and the band came to KDHX to play old and new tracks and talk about the band's evolution (and its brief major label dalliance). JEFF the Brotherhood recorded the songs "Black Cherry Pie" "Heavy Krishna" and "Voyage Into Dreams." Recorded on April 12, 2015 live at KDHX in St. Louis, Missouri. Engineered by Jon Valley.
All alone in 4th Bedroom Studios, Will plays DJ, with music by Those Darlins, Best Coast, Deep Time, JEFF The Brotherhood, Advance Base, Dirty Ghosts, Exitmusic, Metric, Mission of Burma, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, and Thoughts Detecting Machines.
It got loud when NPR Music live webcast these full concerts from two of the grittiest rock duos of the past decade, The Kills and JEFF The Brotherhood. Each band has an outsize sound, fueled by deafening guitar noise and trashy rhythms, and is known for feverish but playful live performances. JEFF The Brotherhood opened the webcast from Washington, D.C.'s 9:30 Club, followed by The Kills. Singer-guitarist Alison Mosshart and drummer Jamie Hince formed The Kills in 2001 after bonding over their shared love of blues- and punk-infused garage rock. Their fourth and most recent record, 2011's Blood Pressure — released after Mosshart heightened her profile alongside Jack White in The Dead Weather — is full of sex and swagger, dark guitar riffs and twisted beats. Real-life brothers Jake and Jamin Orrall founded the duo JEFF The Brotherhood in Nashville in 2001. Over the course of a half-dozen full-length albums, they've built a reputation on distorted, noisy rock with a wry sense of humor. For the band's Tiny Desk performance at the NPR Music offices, they insisted on removing their shirts for what they called "a sad love song," which was immediately followed by plenty of guitar shredding and messy beats. No promises on whether the duo will shirt-up for Thursday's live webcast.
