04/20/2025 Matthew 28: 1-9 The Empty TombThe Resurrection isn't just a story to believe in, it's a Savior to respond to.The defining moment of an empty tomb: The empty tomb changed everything. The Resurrection was not a surprise, Jesus foretold it many times during His ministry. When we come face-to-face with the empty tomb, we come face-to-face with the risen Savior.Roman 3:23; 6:23 (Reality vs Hope)How do you need to respond to the empty tomb? Come and see…then go and tell!2 Corinthians 5:21 “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.”Romans 10:9-10 “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. In today's episode I welcomed Ruth Chiles and Dr Alessia Bruno back on the show, where they discuss helping individuals achieve their hidden potential. They do by using brainspotting, a powerful approach that works by identifying, processing and releasing core neurophysiological sources of emotional/body pain, trauma, dissociation and a variety of other challenging symptoms. In our conversation we go on to chat about secure early attachment and its impact on brain development, intergenerational transmission of traits and how it relates to performance issues, emotional regulation is widely talked about too and how you can incorporate awareness of your nervous system through focused exercises and routines. The challenges of pressure and perfectionism with athletes and performers were touched on too, with a focus on the importance of trust, creativity, and joy in what we choose to take part in. Key Learning Points Parents' emotional regulation impacts children's brain development. Parents' legacy of trauma is passed down to child through their nervous system. Attachment and attunement are crucial for performance, as underlying issues can impact current trauma and developmental trauma. Child's brain development is discussed, including prefrontal cortex and autonomic nervous system. Coaches can help athletes by teaching them techniques to be present in their body during training and competitive events. Coaches should prioritize supporting and developing individuals, not just focusing on the performer or athlete. The “yips” is a word that strikes fear into many golfers, cricketers, darts players and many other performers. With the yips, comes huge emotional and physiological responses. Lack of enjoyment, and often thoughts about and decisions to quit your chosen sport or pastime. It doesn't have to be that way however as Trevor Jones a PGA Professional Golf Coach and Mental Performance Coach and I discuss in this episode. We go on to talk about leaning into your fears, embracing discomfort, Acceptance Commitment Therapy or Training (ACT) and mindfulness to help golfers and performers. Key Learning Points: The yips is a significant problem which can escape into other areas of your sport and life. The practice of "dropping anchor" remaining still for extended periods can help you remain present. Consider what values would make enduring discomfort worthwhile as motivation to regularly practice exercises of this type. Explore ways of incorporating mindfulness techniques into other areas of your life to build mental flexibility. The still lake exercise is a helpful technique to find flow. How often in sport do you see an athlete make the wrong decision under pressure? Often I'd say! Even at the highest level in elite professional sport. Indecision, overthinking, paralysis by analysis, having too much time to think of the consequences, a lack of trust in skills or fear are often the reasons for poor decision making. In this short bite-sized episode, Paul Phillips an author and culture developer and I discuss overthinking in sport where we share some helpful tips so that you can deal better with pressure in the moment. Key Learning Points: Helping athletes generate behaviours before thoughts and emotions is a helpful skill. James Clear's two-minute rule in the book Atomic Habits is a useful approach to take when you are feeling indecisive. In rugby the size of an opponent can trigger fear responses, overthinking and poor decision making. Visual, kinaesthetic and auditory cues and triggers are helpful in overcoming fear, Using metaphors such as images of animals or superhero's is a helpful trigger for adults and children. Spending time with process training, practicing and rehearsing pre-shot and pre-performance routines are hugely beneficial. Contemporary differences between rural and urban areas in America have their roots in long-term demographic, economic, technological, and social factors. Brent and the Brookings Institution's Tony Pipa are hosting conversations “On the Front Porch” with authors of recent research on issues facing rural America. These discussions explore the unique challenges and opportunities facing rural America and consider policy options to promote development and opportunity. Today, we bring you a recent conversation with economist Carol Graham. Graham's recent book The Power of Hope: How the Science of Well-Being Can Save Us from Despair discusses the role that hope plays in supporting the development of individuals and communities in America.
Today, with my colleague Dr Alessia Bruno we discuss the downsides to perfectionism and how many athletes can get obsessed by their sports, training harder and harder, pushing themselves to the limit. The result can then be burnout, playing in fear or a lack of enjoyment. Enjoy tuning in! Key Learning Points Sport can be seen as a job by perfectionist athletes. When searching to get better, the perfectionist can lose the ability to perform with freedom and trust. Physically the perfectionist athlete can become tense and rigid losing control of their fine motor skills, rhythm and timing. Striving for perfection can lead to loss of enjoyment. Visualisation is a great tool when trying to reconnect with the fun and playful part of your personality. Hypoarousal – what is it in a performance context? It is our freeze response, when our mind and body shuts down when we are faced with significant pressure, at least in our own minds. In today's episode I discuss with Ruth Chiles, author of The Focal Dystonia Cure how athletes and performers who experience this freeze response can help themselves. Ruth goes on to share some practical tips that can hugely benefit many people. Key Learnings Brainspotting an approach developed by a New York psychologist called David Grand helps to rewire parts of the brain so that people can respond differently in specific situations. In a performance context, we spend a lot of time in survival mode which can impede fluidity, enlarge muscles and inhibit your fine motor skills. Practicing interoceptive awareness exercises can be very helpful for self-regulation. Centering practices can calm our nervous system. Dr. Carol Graham is interim vice president and director of the Economic Studies program at Brookings, a professor at the University of Maryland, and a Senior Scientist at Gallup. She has spent much of her career studying happiness and wellbeing around the world. Carol joins the podcast to discuss what she calls ‘deaths of despair' and explains why cultivating hope is essential for societies mired in deeply entrenched problems. Her latest book, The Power of Hope: How the Science of Well-Being Can Save Us from Despair, is available now.
In today's episode we look at working with the subconscious mind to improve self-awareness, overcome self-doubt and reduce your chances of choking when performing. My guest, Mental Performance Coach, Brandon Epstein shares his wisdom and gives you some ideas and strategies to keep moving forwards. Key Learning Points: Our subconscious mind can be programmed to help us win or lose. A lot of people are unconsciously incompetent, they lack self-awareness and don't live in the present moment. Self-awareness is crucial to be able to grow and overcome performance plateaus. Start by asking yourself the question - how does my emotional experience start? A lot of athletes crave the feeling of confidence when they perform – it is possible to experience this when working with the subconscious. Self-hypnosis can help you reprogram patterns of behaviour that you repeat. Understanding your limiting beliefs and changing them is a helpful approach. By being proactive and using psychological skills training you can give yourself a better chance of thriving under pressure. Supporting athletes with perfectionist tendencies is a large part of our work at Inspiring Sporting Excellence. They often display the following characteristics: Difficulties transferring their practice or training to competitive events or matches. Trying too hard. Focusing intensely on results and outcomes. Unable to trust themselves under pressure. High, rigid and often unrealistic expectations of themselves and others. Impatience and a tendency to demonstrate poor body language in the face of difficulties and for some to give up too easily. Being frightened of letting other people down. Having brittle confidence. Letting their own self-worth and self-esteem be influenced by poor sporting performances. Additionally, the perfectionist athlete can be very hard on themselves which informs the content in today's episode where I share a case study and a helpful exercise relating to recovering from mistakes and errors. Key Learning Points When we're not emotionally involved it's easier to be kind and compassionate. Often athletes find it easier to be kinder to team-mates than themselves when difficulties arise. The pressure of being judged and critiqued in sport can impact on an athlete's ability to deal with mistakes. Being kind to yourself as an athlete doesn't mean that you are going soft. Learning how to be more self-compassionate can help you motivate yourself more than fear- based motivational methods. In a society marked by extreme inequality of income and opportunity, why should economists care about how people feel? The truth is that feelings of well-being are critical metrics that predict future life outcomes. In The Power of Hope: How the Science of Well-Being Can Save Us from Despair (Princeton UP, 2023), economist Carol Graham argues for the importance of hope--little studied in economics at present--as an independent dimension of well-being. Given America's current mental health crisis, thrown into stark relief by COVID, hope may be the most important measure of well-being, and researchers are tracking trends in hope as a key factor in understanding the rising numbers of "deaths of despair" and premature mortality. Graham, an authority on the study of well-being, points to empirical evidence demonstrating that hope can improve people's life outcomes and that despair can destroy them. These findings, she argues, merit deeper exploration. Graham discusses the potential of novel well-being metrics as tracking indicators of despair, reports on new surveys of hope among low-income adolescents, and considers the implications of the results for the futures of these young adults. Graham asks how and why the wealthiest country in the world has such despair. What are we missing? She argues that public policy problems--from joblessness and labor force dropout to the lack of affordable health care and inadequate public education--can't be solved without hope. Drawing on research in well-being and other disciplines, Graham describes strategies for restoring hope in populations where it has been lost. The need to address despair, and to restore hope, is critical to America's future. Joe Tasca is a host and a reporter for the NPR affiliate in Providence, Rhode Island. How would you define the American Dream? For some, it means hard work pays off, and for others, it represents a period of time in their lives. Some believe that time has come to a close. What makes different groups perceive things differently? To find out how culture impacts people's perception of success and what hope has to do with it, Positive Psychology Podcast Host Lisa Cypers Kamen speaks with Leo Pasvolsky Senior Fellow at Brookings, College Park Professor at the University of Maryland, and a Gallup Senior Scientist, Carol Graham. Carol shares the research that supports her book The Power of Hope: How the Science of Well-Being Can Save Us From Despair. Her findings encompass the hopefulness of minority groups, how the political polarization in the US has led to increased despair, and why money doesn't increase happiness or hopefulness.

The “yips” is a term commonly used in golf. It describes sudden and unexplained losses of fine motor skills which impact on putting strokes and golfers chipping action. It is argued that somewhere between 32 and 47% of serious golfers have been affected by the yips at some point. The yips can be a very complex challenge to overcome where many golfers simply change technique and equipment numerous times. Sports psychologists are advocates of the use of hypnosis, relaxation and visualisation techniques, as well as carefully thought out practice routines to help golfers regain confidence and trust in their putting stroke. In this bitesize episode, my colleague Dr Alessia Bruno tells you more about the yips, what happens in the brain as well as offering you some hope if you experience this debilitating condition, where she refers to techniques such as Brainspotting and EMDR as a way to help you enjoy your golf or sport again. Key Learning Points: The yips is a type of performance anxiety where motor skills are impacted. Golfers tend to become very rigid and controlling when performing a skill. The yips is a serious problem which can seep into other areas of your sport. The yips can cause many athletes to quit their sport. When the yips occurs, a fight or flight or freeze response occurs. The limbic system is activated when we're fearful, especially the amygdala. Brainspotting and EMDR are techniques that allow us to process the memory without getting activated when we play golf or sport. There is hope for hoarding according to Lori Koppelman, host of the Clutter Chronicles Podcast. Over the last two years, she's been interviewing Mary who has an unusual relationship with stuff. Hope for hoarding is often lost in the clutter preventing one from letting go. Angela Brown, The House Cleaning Guru says a hoarder's heart is one of creativity and courage. Hoarders are the first to help another... and they have a messy house. There is hope for hoarding, and understanding hoarders is the first step towards the light. Today's #AskaHouseCleaner sponsors are Savvy Cleaner. (Producer of this Care Series on the complex bond between hoarders and their stuff.) This led him to become a star student in fashion design at Parsons and the Fashion Institute of Technology.
