One of the primary functions of a baseball umpire is the enforcement of the rules of the game. Today, CB, E-Nak and Trav meet with John Ottavino, a self-made baseball rules expert (our definition). John publishes a free daily email, "Baseball Rule of the Day." This mail list is available to anyone who asks. Currently, there are hundreds of umpires, across the USA, and abroad, who subscribe to John's list. We talk to Mr Ottavino about the origins of the mail list, from a small local distribution, to the growth to today, and some of the interesting rules/interpretations. You can subscribe to John's free "Baseball Rule of the Day," email list just by asking - j.ottavino@att.net . We would love to hear from you. The Mets take two of three from the Seattle Mariners. It could have been a sweep if Peterson, Ottavino and Vogelbach didn't do what they normally do. On top of that, Ronny Mauricio makes his debut and does nothing but get five hits in three games along with a pair of stolen bases. Will the final month of the season secure a roster spot for Ronny or any of the other young kids? Greg joined Carey & Randy to talk about the recent rumors around him joining the Cardinals broadcast, his thoughts on Sean Murphy's extension in Atlanta, why that makes him think even more about Contreras, Correa's days as a shortstop being over, why Ottavino would've been a great move for the Cardinals and why Rich Hill wouldn't have been and why he's such an elite gift giver.
Claibs joins Randy & Carey to talk about the results of the Cardinals' big move at the Winter Meetings, why Contreras was his second choice behind Murphy, his excitement for Contreras' contribution to the offense, looking for a starter who can crack this top 5 but not having a long list that fits the bill, how a veteran like Ottavino could fit, his expectations for a young Cardinals pitcher coming and the greatest HS basketball players to ever come through St. Louis.
We've been living in a dream world this entire off-season, but the truth is this is our new reality. The New York Mets are the bully on the block and no one can step to Uncle Stevie, not even the Evil Empire cross-town. Could you IMAGINE George ever saying the Yankees can't compete with the METS? That's where we are at. Ain't no fun when the rabbit's got the gun and the broke boys in the Bronx are running scared. The guys check in on spring training and our newest ace, we talk Dom bombs and praise our quirky new reliever for kicking his old squad while they're down. Clem breaks down the free agent market, who's most likely to give the Mets trouble and what, if any, moves are left for the Mets to make. We're not saying the team is done, but we gotta believe the best moves left are the the patient ones. It's a long season and we gotta believe the long game will pay off. - Updates from Spring Training - Dom Smith homered off Scherzer twice - Ottavino throws shade at Yankees - Kris Bryant, Freddie Freeman and Kyle Schwarber sign - Possible remaining moves - The Yankees are BROKE BOYS - Mets Trivia Twitter: @gottabelievepod, @KFCBarstool, @TheClemReport, @KyleGelling, @MeekPhil_ IG: @wegottabelieve YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_FR1IhNuGMQjDsVxQsf-AA TikTok: Wegottabelieve

The Red Sox have clinched a postseason spot and will host the Yankees in a Wild Card game on Tuesday at Fenway Park. Can you believe it!? Today we talk how we kinda called this months ago, the stress of everything that went down during Sunday's game, if we're surprised the Blue Jays season is over, the unusual situation of pausing the game for farewell ovations to Nats players while the Sox were mounting a critical comeback, how insane it was that Juan Soto had zero hits the entire series, how much credit Ryan Brasier deserves for the Sox being in this position, some very questionable umpire calls this weekend, how well Alex Cora managed specifically this series with the NL rules in effect, reaction to JD hurting himself tripping over 2nd base while heading to the outfield, having no trust in Ottavino at this point, the importance of #RallyCups this weekend, if we have any issue with champagne celebrations for just getting into the Wild Card game, the Sox needing to put up more runs in the first half of games, a big lookahead to this do or die game coming up against the Yankees and much more. GO SOX!
The crew talks about the series vs the Indians. How frustrating it's been watching the team play during the Covid situation and how fortunate the Sox have been during the problems. How the guys that have been called up, have contributed since being called up. Game 1: Eovaldi takes the ball and tries to up Sale and Eddies latest inning by going 6.1 innings throwing 98 pitches. Ottavino ended up blowing the game but got the win with the offense.Game 2: The offense looked lost against Eli Morgan. Morgan went 5.2 and did not give up a run. Houck went 5 innings and gave up 0 runs as well. The offense just did not show up until the 7th inning. Alex Verdugo ends up walking it off with a single to right field after the Indians decided to intentionally walk JD to load the bases. Game 3: Kutter Crawford ended up getting called to start this game because Pivetta ended up on the Covid IL. It sucks that this was his debut but the offense didn't show up again until later in the game. The Red Sox lost a series in Anaheim and Angels fans are acting like we're their rivals now for some reason. Relax. Today we talk how obnoxious that series was, if Ohtani is still underrated, why Ottavino said "happy birthday, bitch" to Shohei, Angels fans needing to chill the hell out if they can't come close to selling out an Ohtani start, Jared having no time for Felger's antics, if the Red Sox have the highest chance of being the next Boston team to win a title, where Xander's power has gone, a lookahead to this Sox-Phillies series, expectations for who the Red Sox will take with the No. 4 pick in the MLB Draft on Sunday and much more. Enjoy!
Since our last episode it's been a tough week for the Red Sox, losing 2 of 3 on the road to both the Royals and the Rays. In this one we discuss Nick Pivetta throwing his second no hitter of the year, DeGrom being the second best pitcher in the league, what the thought process is behind having Danny Santana hit leadoff, if Ottavino is nearing in on taking the closer roll away from Barnes, if you would trade E-Rod at the deadline, the Red Sox having trouble against teams with bad records, a David Ortiz and Danny Santana comparison, who we think the team will trade for at the deadline, the upcoming weekend series against the Yankees, Gerrit Cole's first start against the Red Sox with fans at home, a surprise Alex Cora impact player of the week, the Hartford Whalers coming back to the NHL, the need for a hot tub and lazy river in the Fenway outfield/warning track, Montana listeners, and more! Fenway was back to full capacity over the weekend and you simply LOVE to see it. Today we talk the impact the full crowd had on the game on Saturday, recap Steve and Jared's time at Fenway on Friday, when it's time to start worrying about the Rays being good, why Yankees fans need to realize they root for a mediocre ballclub, how dumb it is to say a player is an even better person, FanGraphs needing to change their playoff percentages immediately, Ottavino and Sawamura being fired up on Saturday, if we're actually supporters of Josh Taylor, 17-10 May still being on the table even though the game on Sunday got rained out, a schedule lookahead to this Astros series and how important this week is for the Sox to prove they belong at the top of the American League. That and much more. Enjoy!

The Ottavino family has their fingerprints all over New York City...literally. They helped build the landmarks we all know as NYC from the ground up. So, after setting franchise records as the closer for the Colorado Rockies, when Adam Ottavino signed a three year deal with the Yankees in 2019, it wasn't just a matter of playing for the team he grew up watching, it was about coming home to where he belongs. The pitcher talks about how his former "batcave" in Harlem prepared him for quarantine workouts, how he and newest Yankees ace Gerrit Cole are becoming fast friends, and what it felt like the first time he put on the pinstripes. Adam and Jensen also open up about their shared struggles with mental health and the helpful exercises Adam has practiced over his MLB career. The New York Yankees are headed home tied 1-1 in the ALCS to the Houston Astros. Marty Mush is back once again to help us recap the mayhem that was games one and two. The Yankees absolutely destroyed Houston in game one by the score of 7-0. Gleyber Torres is 22 years old, Tanaka is the GOAT, and there was never a doubt. Game two on the other hand was a different story. We weathered the storm against Verlander, Judge hit a bomb, but big mistakes gave Springer and Correa the edge. Is Is Tommy a psychic? Are we nervous about Ottavino? What was the FOX production team doing in the 11th? All this and more on the latest edition of The Short Porch, presented by SeatGeek.
In this episode we had the pleasure of speaking with Shalini Sekhar of Ottavino Wines. We speak to Shalini about: • The relationship between Music and Wine • Wine Consulting • Harvest • And so much more…………… Shalini's Bio A former musician, Shalini turned from her Master's Degree in Flute and Piccolo Performance to a career in wine. After completing her studies at Fresno State University in Enology and Viticulture, she began her journey into winemaking marrying the same combination of art and science that fueled her passion in music. Her experience with boutique producers and Pinot Noir dates back to her time at William Selyem. What followed was a series of steps into the custom crush world where she began working with small clients to execute their visions for their boutique brands beginning with Copain Custom Crush (now Punchdown Cellars), then Bluxome Street Winery, and finally ROAR wines, where she made wine for Waits-Mast Family Cellars, Furthermore Pinot Noir, Neely Wine and several smaller brands. In 2015 she was awarded Winemaker of the Year at the San Francisco International Wine Competition for her work with Furthermore Pinot Noir. She continues to make wine for Waits-Mast and Neely. When Shalini is not at the winery or in the vineyard, she is busy studying for her WSET Diploma and chasing after her two small children.
