In AZELO's very first podcast, Dr. Dwight Moore interviews the Rev. Jim Hines of Philadelphia who shares an alternative view from one held by many Christians that "Thou Shalt not Kill" is biblical evidence that Medical Aid in Dying is a sin. They discuss Jim's spiritual calling in life and why the Medical Aid in Dying option is acceptable to God for many terminally ill persons who choose it at the end of life.
The 10 second barrier has been a milestone for decades in the Men's 100m Dash. A time of 9.9 seconds was seen as a right of passage into becoming an elite sprinter, and among one of the best in the world. Though running sub 10 is commonplace today amongst the top sprinters in the world, about 50 years ago in 1968, no man had ever broken the barrier. Not until Jim Hines. Jim Hines became the first person to break the 10 second barrier when he ran a hand-timed 9.9 second 100m dash at the 1968 AAU Championships. Because that performance was hand-timed, and the Automatic time was actually 10.03, Hines wanted to do it again and this time at a place where it mattered. At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, Mexico, Hines won the Gold medal in the 100m Dash and broke the 10 second barrier again, this time running an Automatic time of 9.95 seconds, a time that would stand as the World Record for almost 15 years. The four Republicans running for governor held their first debate this week. It was the first time Attorney General Bill Schuette, Lt. Gov. Brian Calley, Sen. Patrick Colbeck and Dr. Jim Hines have appeared together on one stage. There were arguments over the handling of the Flint water crisis and who's the biggest Trump supporter. One thing they all agreed on is that Michigan should not legalize recreational marijuana, but they said they'd respect the wishes of the voters. This Week in Review, Weekend Edition host Rebecca Kruth and senior news analyst Jack Lessenberry talk about what else stood out in the debate .
Carbon taxation and carbon cap and trade have been implemented with varied success as greenhouse gas reduction strategies in recent years. Carbon taxes have gone into effect, seemingly counterintuitively, where the energy industry looms large. And cap and trade programs have operated broadly across Europe, and regionally in parts of the U.S. Energy Policy Now guest Jim Hines, Professor of economics and law at the University of Michigan, provides insight into the workings of cap and trade and carbon taxation, and explains the unique set of factors that may make one policy more politically acceptable than the other. Jim Hines is a professor of law and economics at the University of Michigan, and an editorial advisor to the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy at the University of Pennsylvania. His research is focused on various aspects of taxation. He is a research associate with the National Bureau of Economic Research, and research director of the International Tax Policy Forum.
