Trans stories are not confined to political rhetoric and headlines. The world of creative writing is replete with narratives that explore complex worlds of gender and how identity intersects with people's lives and relationships. In a new collection of one novel and three stories, bestselling author Torrey Peters's keen eye for the rough edges of community and desire push the limits of trans writing.  In Stag Dance, the titular novel, a group of lumberjacks working in an illegal winter logging outfit plan a dance that some of them will attend as women. When the most unlikely of the axmen announces his intention to dance as a woman, he finds himself caught in a strange rivalry, inviting a cascade of obsession, jealousy, and betrayal that culminates on the big night in an exploration of gender and transition. A trio of shorter tales surround Stag Dance: “Infect Your Friends and Loved Ones” imagines a gender apocalypse brought about by an unstable ex-girlfriend. “The Chaser” presents a secret romance between roommates at a Quaker boarding school, and “The Masker” details a Vegas party weekend that turns dark when a young crossdresser must choose between two guides: a mystery man who thrills but objectifies her, or a veteran trans woman who offers sisterhood and cynicism. Peters' talk and work is especially timely surrounding ongoing conversations about trans rights in our nation but is an invitation to any fiction reader. Torrey Peters is the bestselling author of the novel Detransition, Baby, which won the PEN/Hemingway Award for Debut Novel and was named one of the 100 Best Books of the 21st Century by The New York Times. It was also a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle's John Leonard Prize, a finalist for the Brooklyn Public Library Book Prize, and longlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction. She has an MFA from the University of Iowa and an MA in comparative literature from Dartmouth. Peters rides a pink motorcycle and splits her time between Brooklyn and an off-grid cabin in Vermont. Aster Olsen is the author of the novella Performance Review. She lived most of her life in the gorgeous swampy parts of Florida people don't visit on vacation, but now lives in Seattle, where she spends her time swimming in alpine lakes alongside aquatic insect larvae. A professional scientist, she rejects the binary oppositional positioning of STEM and Art and seeks to collapse and expand imposed categories and narratives to further understanding. Her writing is found in Lilac Peril, Hey Alma, Autostraddle, Inner Worlds, Itch.io, and elsewhere. She is the creator, editor, and publisher of TRANSplants Zine, a zine series about transness and place, and runs the trans open mic reading and art series please (t)read with me.  Find more at asterolsen.com. #347 In this episode, Guy welcomed Cailin Callaghan, a spiritual cognitive coach who shared her transformative near-death experience (NDE). Cailin recounted her encounter with an interdimensional being named Michael, who taught her the concept of 'lucidity'—being awake in the dream of the world. They delved into the idea that we create our world with our expectations and labels, often leading to our own unhappiness. Cailin discussed techniques to harness our consciousness to reshape our experiences and perspectives, emphasizing the importance of intentional thinking and speaking. This profound conversation explores how understanding our true selves can empower us to overcome suffering and embrace our role as creators in our own lives. About Cailin: At the age of twenty in 1978, I made a trip to the Lustrous Vast of Quantum Imminence where I was met by the guide whom I had, five years before, dismissed as merely the imaginary friend of my childhood. He, The Daemon Michael, is the source Consciousness from which I spring into this world venue, and he and I operate in a few other venues together as well while my body is sleeping here in Earth Venue.  When I met him in the Lustrous Vast, T. D. Michael gave me a life review and a revelation of what Humanity is doing that is destroying their happiness and preventing access to all the powers of their "godly estate." Empowered by this revelation, and inspired by the Divine Love I became while in the Lustrous Vast, I wielded my Will to literally raise my body from the dead. (It's not hard to do when you know what you are and what the Earth is.) My body had died from head trauma when a stallion had kicked me in the face, knocking me from the back of the running mare I'd been astride, chasing that stallion. My body lay in a pasture with my friend running towards it. As she stood over my still form, thinking I was dead and wondering what to do since we were so isolated, I, like a gusting whirlwind of Will, reinhabited my form, and the body's eyes popped open.  I started right away trying to deliver to the world the Liberating Perspective The Daemon Michael had given me, but it was 1978, and the world was not acquainted yet, in large, with the Quantum principles I/We had to offer. Do I Know You? A Journey Through Neurodiversity and Inner LivesJournalist and author Sadie Dingfelder takes us on a journey through the hidden diversity of human perception. Diagnosed with aphantasia (the inability to create mental images) and face blindness, Sadie has learned firsthand how drastically inner worlds can differ from person to person. These differences impact how we connect with others, process emotions, and navigate relationships. As we explore Sadie's personal experiences and her book, Do I Know You?, we uncover how assumptions about shared realities often drive misunderstanding and frustration. In a time when social media algorithms amplify outrage and political bias, acknowledging neurodiversity helps us better understand those who think, feel, and see the world differently. We also discuss the broader implications of these differences, from the ways extreme media narratives distort the news to the role empathy plays in diffusing political anger and polarization. Sadie offers a unique perspective on reducing conflict and fostering meaningful connections in a world where voters and individuals often feel divided by unseen barriers.Join us for a fascinating conversation about perception, connection, and what it means to embrace the remarkable range of human experience. Listen now and discover how curiosity about others' inner worlds can help counteract frustration, outrage, and division.Text me your feedback and leave your contact info if you'd like a reply (this is a one-way text). Love and the Working Class: The Inner Worlds of Nineteenth Century Americans (Oxford University Press, 2024) by Dr. Karen Lystra is a unique look at the emotions of hard-living, nineteenth-century Americans who were often on the cusp of literacy. These laboring folk highly valued letters and, however difficult it was, wrote to stay connected to those they loved. This book displays the personal expression of factory hands, manual laborers, peddlers, coopers, carpenters, lumbermen, miners, tanners, haulers, tailors, seamstresses, laundresses, domestics, sharecroppers, independent farmers, and common soldiers and their wives. Entering the “anonymous corners” of these people's lives through letters, we can see their humor, grit, hope, heartache, and endurance, and grasp what they believed and felt about themselves, their kinfolk, and their friends. As much as possible, these working-class Americans living in the nineteenth century speak to contemporary readers in their own words. Often armed with only a third or fourth grade education, they could read but had limited instruction in writing. Yet they sat down to compose a letter, often spurred by a range of experience including the Gold Rush, westward expansion, slavery, the Emancipation Proclamation, and what was arguably the most important event in nineteenth-century America, the Civil War. During the war, poor, undereducated soldiers and their families wrote letters in a quantity never before seen in American history. Using letters written to parents, siblings, husbands, wives, friends, and potential mates between 1830 and 1880, Dr. Lystra identifies the shared conceptions of love and practices of courtship and marriage within a racially diverse population of free working-class people born in America. Readers can listen to their voices as they flirt, act as intermediaries in hometown courtships, express non-romantic love to their mates, tease each other, and voice their hopes for the future. Through these personal letters, poor, minimally schooled Americans show us how they felt about love and how they created meaningful attachments in their uncertain lives. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Growing up in rural Austria, ISTA facilitator Ashisha Arpana's favorite toy was her imagination. She gleefully played with it, eventually turning what happened in her mind's eye into a career in film and media. The imagination, she tells us in this deep and exploratory episode, is one of the most important keys for us in letting go of the old, disempowering stories we tell ourselves and getting back into currency with life as it moves through us. Ashisha explains that we can spark our imagination—our vision of an amazing, vibrant present—through mythology. This is not just a collection of stories from ancient cultures, but living, breathing codes for tapping into the source of our inner worlds. It is where the pulse of life comes from. And there are some simple things we can do to allow this source of our inner life to pour through us into the world, allowing us to shape-shift and, ultimately, choose how our future will go.Simon and Ashisha also discuss:how we often out-source our imagination to Hollywoodhow myths are always evolving. Welcome episode 203 where we look at the origins of anxiety and how it affects us in adulthood. In this episode we talk about how early childhood trauma, lack of family boundaries, and bad experiences with unhealthy people can all contribute to anxiety in different ways. Childhood trauma can lead to anxiety by disrupting healthy development, causing dysregulation of emotions, and impairing cognitive functioning. Lack of family boundaries can contribute to anxiety by leading to unclear expectations, parentification, and inconsistent parenting. Bad experiences with unhealthy people can distort our view of what's possible in relationships, causing negative beliefs, trust issues with self and others, difficulty setting boundaries, and lots of unhealthy coping mechanisms.   Key Elements: ·      Look at aspects of families that can contribute to longstanding anxiety. ·      Describe how boundaries – and lack thereof – in families can create problems for the child with their self-esteem and their relationships. ·      Explore how different levels of early emotional trauma cause varying degrees of anxiety and other struggles later on.     No one gets out of an emotionally dysfunctional  family unscathed.  At the very least there  will be a wee bit of perfectionism and that constant low hum of anxiety.   Resources:   Make sure you sign up for the bonus downloads at www.ownitpowercast.com.  Tribe members will receive them in their email each week. Reading this book was an amazing revelation. Vivid descriptions of beautiful celestial cities, teaching centers, healing wards, etc., which exist on our nearby planet Venus according to the author I found this book resonates with the law of one and our recent reading of the book Life In The Unseen World By Anthony Borgia This is a book that changes lives. Dictated by the Ascended Masters of the Seven Shamballas, The Voice of Venus sweeps the reader off to the higher worlds where Luminaries of Earth's past continue their efforts to enlighten humanity after so-called "death." In the higher dimensions of Venus, that means the Lighted Ones stay busy:    Rehabilitating suicide victims prior to their reincarnation    Conducting classes for truth seekers who visit in dream states while their bodies sleep on Earth    Preparing souls for ascension into more advanced worlds    Maintaining their sparkling Venusian bodies, homes, and temples by using their Minds to shape the raw energy of the Infinite Creative Intelligence into useful form Clairvoyantly and clairaudiently received through Ernest L. Norman (1904‒1971), The Voice of Venus, Book One of the five-volume Pulse of Creation series, was first published in 1956 and remains a popular favorite among his seventeen published works. The complete series features dissertations from the Ascended Masters who introduce a "universal, articulate, interdimensional understanding of science"-a cosmic "theory of everything" that joins science and spirit into a useful guide for visionary leaders in the arts, science, healing, education, leadership, devotion, and philosophy. Lightworkers, starseeds, spirit nerds, and humanitarians may find The Voice of Venus takes them back to places they remember, in the company of the Lighted Ones who are their teachers and guides. Generations of readers have exclaimed over the spiritual awakening the book inspired. Many claim the book never loses its luster, even after countless re-visits: "The Voice of Venus is like a celestial passport to the Inner Worlds of Light. I love to visit the crystalline cities with their classrooms, healing temples, and beautiful gardens, while taking in the higher energies radiated from the Venusians. After reading, I always feel more love, peace, and joy!"-Jennifer Stovall "The information that is contained  has been my source of inspiration for the past thirty-five plus years." -Michael L., Inventor "I always wondered about life after death and what the experience of dying would be like. This book takes you through the process in a way that is unique and exquisitely explained. The scientific and spiritual blend of knowledge is beautiful beyond anything I have ever read-or experienced!"-Douglas Taylor, Artist, Author of Soulic Journeys "A few minutes with this book always lifts my mood and brings quick answers to trouble or confusion I might be experiencing that day."-Lianne Downey, Author of Speed Your Evolution "... other authors' and teachers' works continually affirm the truth that [Ernest Norman] so humbly brought to our world."-Liam Lukasik, Music by Brian Larson And Mettaverse

The Secret Life of Secrets: How Our Inner Worlds Shape Well-Being, Relationships, and Who We Are by Michael Slepian Think of a secret that you're keeping from others. It shouldn't take long; behavioral scientist Michael Slepian finds that, on average, we are keeping as many as thirteen secrets at any given time. His research involving more than 50,000 participants from around the world shows that the most common secrets include lies we've told, ambitions, addictions, mental health challenges, hidden relationships, and financial struggles. Our secrets can weigh heavily upon us. Yet the burden of secrecy, Slepian argues, rarely stems from the work it takes to keep a secret hidden. Rather, the weight of our secrets comes from carrying them alone, without the support of others. Whether we are motivated to protect our reputation, a relationship, a loved one's feelings, or some personal or professional goal, one thing is clear: Holding back some part of our inner world is often lonely and isolating. But The Secret Life of Secrets shows you that it doesn't have to be. Filled with fresh insight into one of the most universal—yet least understood—aspects of human behavior, The Secret Life of Secrets sheds a fascinating new light on questions like: At what age do children develop the cognitive capacity for secrecy? Do all secrets come with the same mental load? How can we reconcile our secrets with our human desires to relate, connect, and be known? When should we confess our secrets? Who makes for the ideal confidant? And can keeping certain types of secrets actually enhance our well-being? Drawing on over a decade of original research, The Secret Life of Secrets reveals the surprising ways that secrets pervade our lives, and offers science-based strategies that make them easier to live with. The result is a rare window into the inner workings of our minds, our relationships, and our sense of who we are.

In this episode, we wade into a conversation with Jean Alicia Elster. Jean Alicia Elster is an author of young adult novels and children's books. A native Detroiter and former attorney, Elster has published a number of books including - Joe Joe in the City, Who is Jim Hines?, The Colored Car, and How it Happens. Together, we celebrate the work of Ida B. Wells-Barnette. She was one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Over the course of a lifetime dedicated to combating prejudice and violence, and the fight for African-American equality, especially that of women, Wells arguably became the most famous Black woman in the United States. As a skilled writer, Wells-Barnett also used her skills as a journalist to shed light on the conditions of African Americans throughout the South. We explore how Wells-Barnette's practice of courageous truth-telling connects to Elster's role as a writer of young adult fiction. Jean also shares how we might better take care of our inner child and take much-needed time to process.  In this episode, we talk about:  How people and community reinforce our sense of self The importance of life lessons and overcoming obstacles How to take care and protect our inner child Resources:  Jean Alicia Elster - Website: http://jeanaliciaelster.com Referenced Works Joe, Joe in the City Series The Colored Car  How It Happens  Ida B. We experience wonder when we realize our true size.On clear nights, we ride a speck of dust as it circles an 11,000-degree fireball shooting through a limitless vacuum at 52 times the speed of a rifle bullet. And that fireball is one of billions of fireballs in our galaxy. And our galaxy is one of billions of galaxies. Looking at the stars, we know our true size.On rainy days, we thumb through the fading scrapbooks of our minds, celebrating small and silly victories, reflecting on old mistakes, examining events that will cease to be when we are gone. And again, we know our true size. Jorge Luis Borges speaks of this infinite, inner universe in The Witness.“The man, while still a boy, had seen the face of Woden, had seen holy dread and exultation, had seen the rude wooden idol weighed down with Roman coins and heavy vestments, seen the sacrifice of horses, dogs, and prisoners. Before dawn he would be dead and with him would die, never to return, the last firsthand images of the pagan rites. The world would be poorer when this Saxon was no more.” “We may well be astonished by space-filling acts which come to an end when someone dies, and yet something, or an infinite number of things, die in each death. There was a day in time when the last eyes to see Christ were closed forever. The battle of Junín and the love of Helen died with the death of some one man.” “What will die with me when I die? What pathetic or frail form will the world lose? Perhaps the voice of Macedonio Fernandez, the image of a horse in the vacant space at Serrano and Charcas, a bar of sulfur in the drawer of a mahogany desk?” Roy Batty, the leader of the replicants in Blade Runner (1982) spoke of his own inner universe just before he died.“I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.” Likewise, in Richard Hoggart's First and Last Things, an old woman observes,“Since Penelope Noakes of Duppas Hill is gone, there is no one who will ever call me Nellie again.” I mention these things only because you populate your private universe with people and events of your own choosing. If you don't like the world you live in, you can change it.The people who occupy the space around you can choose to be there against your will. But you, alone, control who it is that occupies the real estate of your mind. Roy H. Williams

This is a discussion I had with my friend Simon after he had partaken in a Shamanic medicine ceremony using DMT. Having experienced this medicine myself I was eager to hear of his experience and how it has shaped his life. Unfortunately, the audio quality of the final part wasn't up to snuff and this was where Simon shared that his relationship with his father which was historically very angry and turbulent has since shifted and he finds himself free from the attachment into said anger. Things just don't stick or affect him in the same way which to me is a powerful testament to what happens when we undergo these types of transformational experiences.
