This month, we discuss the Afrofuturism/Afrofantasy square from Books & Bites Bingo. As Michael pointed out on the podcast, “Afrofuturism and Afrofantasy are sub-genres of science fiction and fantasy that are rooted in African cultures, myth, folklore, and the overall Black experience.” Jacqueline enjoyed Raybearer by Jordon Ifeuko. This debut YA Afrofantasy novel was inspired by African folklore. Some of the issues this novel tackles are women's struggles in patriarchal societies, the erasing of marginalized people in history, self discovery, and found families. Bite: Since author Jordon Ifueko grew up eating fried plantains, Jacqueline suggests trying them at the Hola Havana Cuban restaurant in Lexington or using the Fried Plantain Chips recipe from Serious Eats.Michael recommends The Black God's Drums by P. Djèlí Clark. It's a steampunk novella that fully immerses you in an alternate 1871 New Orleans. The U.S. Civil War is in an armistice, with New Orleans being a free and neutral city that's enjoyed by both sides. The book's protagonist is a thirteen-year-old girl named Jacqueline, who goes by the name of Creeper. Bite: If you can't be in New Orleans in person, why not transport yourself there with a dish of Maque Choux from Gumbo Ya Ya?Carrie's pick is Redemption in Indigo by Barbadian author Karen Lord. It's a brief Afrofantasy novel that revisits a Senegalese folktale. The main character, Paama, has left her gluttonous, spoiled husband Ansige and returned to her family in the village of Makendha. While there, magical, undying beings called the djombi give Paama the Chaos Stick, allowing her to change the course of human disasters. Bite: Experience the taste of Senegal with Peanut Stew from AtoZ World Food, a library database with recipes from all over the world.

According to Navajo mythology, the Black God is the creator of the stars and the fire that burns in the universe. Although some accounts claim that he didn't create the constellations, all agree that he did create fire and the light found in the stars.According to a story, the Holy People saw the Hard Flint Boys also known as the Pleiades attached to the ankle of the Black God when he entered the Hogan. When they asked him why the constellation was there, he started to stomp his feet, and the stars moved up towards his head. He was then allowed to place all of the constellations in the sky. While he was completing this task, Coyote or M'ii came along and threw a few stars into the sky. These random non-clustered stars, which are different from constellations, are the reason why there are so many random stars in the night sky.The Black God is typically depicted as an old, slow, and helpless creature who is incapable of heroic acts. He is also often portrayed as a trickster who passes himself off as poor in order to receive monetary assistance from the people. The Black God is commonly depicted with various objects such as the crescent moon on his forehead, the Pleiades on his temple, and a full moon for his mouth. He also wears a buckskin mask made out of white paint.Read more at https://mythlok.com/black-god/

Oliver experimented with sending six S&S tales to a younger, contemporary fantasy fan, then got her reactions, and discussed promoting sword & sorcery to younger, more diverse audiences. Among other things, we discuss the work of Robin Hobb, the dilution of the term "sword & sorcery" and other branding issues, living in a character's head, struggling to connect with Tower of the Elephant, reading trope-setting classics as a contemporary reader, connecting more with emotion-driven sword & sorcery, backfiring magic, quick-moving plots and pacing, how Sof felt S&S has a unified feel and how it differs from the broad trends of contemporary fantasy, Brian Murphy's definition of sword & sorcery, short stories as a break from the 500+ page installations of trilogies or longer, the evolution of Sof's own writing, how DO we recommend S&S to people who don't read it - young and old, why telling someone something is short isn't actually a great selling point, how S&S's outsider protagonist tradition primes it for more diversity in its protagonists and appealing to people outside the classic white cishet male demographic, best online platforms for reading younger audiences and the challenge of self-reinforcing popularity, the importance of making books look pretty on social media, the strong art tradition of sword & sorcery, the "convincing you to read based on aesthetic" TikTok format, author newsletters, the fallacy of expecting self-published authors to do everything a publishing house can do, changing trends in fantasy cover art, this thing called "Google", Sof's own novel she's working on, Elizabeth Olsen's early film "Martha Marcy May Marlene", and more! In this episode of Postcards, I have a chat with author P.Djeli Clark the author of one of my favorite books of last year Ring Shout. Phenderson Djéli Clark is the award-winning and Hugo, Nebula, Sturgeon, and World Fantasy nominated author of the novellas Ring Shout, The Black God’s Drums, and The Haunting of Tram Car 015. Born in New York and raised mostly in Houston, Texas, he spent the early formative years of his life in the homeland of his parents, Trinidad and Tobago. Ring Shout is an amazing piece of work from a singular voice. No one else on this planet could write this story and those are the best stories always. Ring Shout is a dark fantasy that is not only in conversation with history but confronting it. This novel is a cutting piece of commentary that comes out a century after its events and sadly doesn’t feel distant. This conversation is about Clark as a writer, and a historian but any discussion of a novel like Ring Shout will be deep. The history of the Klan, the movements against them but both historical and fictional. Balance of history, mythology, and much more. @pdjeliclark pdjeliclark.com •You can find my books here: Bookshop: https://bookshop.org/contributors/david-agranoff Amazon-https://www.amazon.com/David-Agranoff/e/B004FGT4ZW •And me here: Goodreads-http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/2988332.David_Agranoff Twitter-https://twitter.com/DAgranoffAuthor Blog-http://davidagranoff.blogspot.com/

Religion or one's spiritual practice are the center of one's understanding of themselves in relation to the world within which they live. It is indeed the essence of who are. And for better or worse contextualizes and informs our identity. The development of practices and/or rituals that seek to help us understand the relationship between humanity, nature, and the universe are both a science and an art. When exploring the contours and continuities of Africana radical traditions, religion and/or spirituality or spiritual practices are often explored in relation to Western European traditions, in many ways, intentionally. The project to situate mainstream denominational formations at the center of the Africana religious experience began as a retort to those who claimed that Africa had no religion—only fetishism (Pietz 1988, 105–123). More than this, it has operated to silence traditions that have fallen outside regnant post-Enlightenment understandings of religion as “faith”. This has meant that, for the better part of a century, religion has been deemed synonymous with Christianity, and the institutional Black Church, in the U.S, in particular (Pérez, 2014: 82). Yet, Africa, still flashes through. There have been calls to reevaluate the grand narratives of Eurocentric religious thought and entertain the viability of de-centering the Black Church (Pérez, 2014: 93). I mean, was it not Cécile Fatiman, a mambo, and Dutty Boukman, a houngan, presiding over a Vodoun ceremony that gave direction and energy to Africans to free themselves in Haiti? What about our maroon ancestors? In Working Roots and Conjuring Traditions: Relocating Black ‘Cults and Sects' in African-American Religious History, Pérez argues that it is imperative to de-center the Black church in order to approach the heterogeneity and richness of lived religion…” (73). In relation to the Black radical tradition and Islam, specifically what's considered its unorthodox formations, little attention is given. Accordingly, narrow conceptualizations of Islam, or any spiritual practices of Africana peoples for that matter, marginalizes the impact of unorthodox communities. We miss the fact that Clarence 13X, Father Allah, a dissident follower of El Hajj Malik El Shabazz, use the “Black God trope that 13X learned from El Shabazz to articulate their humanist worldview” (Collins, A Disciple of Malcolm X: Clarence 13X Smith's Embodied Black God Rhetoric, 2020). In the final analysis, a historical consciousness that does not inform a radical imagination that invents paths to an African future is counterproductive to liberation. Today, we will explore, contextually, Islam and the Black radical tradition. AWNP's, Dr. Tasneem Siddiqui is in conversation with Dr. Bilal Ware. Dr. Rudolph (Bilal) Ware is a historian of Africa and Islam. He is currently an associate professor at the UC-Santa Barbara, and the founding director of the Initiative for the Study of Race, Religion, and Revolution (ISRRAR). His first book, The Walking Qur'an: Islamic Education, Embodied Knowledge, and History in West Africa, explores the history of a thousand years of Quran schooling in the region. His research and teaching examines Muslim anti-slavery movements in Africa and the Atlantic World. His most recent book, Jihad of the Pen: Sufi Thought in West Africa, with co-authors Zakary Wright and Amir Syed, explores Sufi thought in West Africa. Dr. Ware is currently working on: Visionaries: Second Sight and Social Change in Islamic West Africa; and The First Atlantic Revolution: Islam, Abolition, & Republic in West Africa c. 1776. Our show was produced today in solidarity with the Native/Indigenous, African, and Afro Descendant communities who are fighting for the protection of our land for the benefit of all peoples!

In the previous episode, Specialist Ma'asehyahu Isra-Ul presented the premise that it was Marcus Mosiah Garvey who laid the groundwork for "Black Godism" in America. While there were others who presented themselves as "Gods" in black flesh (i.e. Father Divine), it was Garvey who defined the purpose and need for having a "Black God". In this part III, we delve into the history of the Five-Percenters and the Nubian Nation and how these organizations took Black Godism from the worship of an external deity into the "awakening" of being the embodiment if this deity. He is also a graphic designer and has provided art designs for records and merchandise for a whole host of bands through the years. I have been a huge fan of his work through the years so it was a great pleasure to get to chat to him. A very honest and respectful guy! I hope you enjoy this episode.

We're back.....kinda! And trading out old problems for new ones. Uggghh! So with all the crazyness going on for every member of this show at the moment, there's having to be a little restructuring at the moment so in the interim until I move (42 more days!), we will try but probably will not be able to do a show weekly. We're hoping to have a bi-weekly show until my move is final. Just too hectic of schedules for now. I completely re-did my laptop in hoping to get the audio jump fixed, which it's seemed to have fixed! But now....in this episode being the first one done with a new laptop, the goddam audio just decides to randomly mute us in the middle of a conversation. So I cut all the silence out, problem is you miss the comedy gold! Courtney was on this episode as she was visiting Jess in Florida. If you don't know who she is, she was one of the original 5. And also guest starring was Matt's loud ass washing machine. I'm surprised there's any clothes left after that jet engine in there is done whipping those clothes around! Steve was also back to guest appeared on our show which is always welcome. And debuting was Black God. He's a work in progress. Jess and Courtney talk about their awesome bacon fest that they went on. And I'm really jealous. We talk about the Country Thunder trip we went on. And our "Fucking Diack!" incident along with Troy's trip wire around our camp. Of course of audio starts kicking out right then......so freaking aggravating. Matt talks about his making out with a Great Dane. He needs to stop doing that.....he's losing his lips! Then we talk about the whole Robin Williams thing. Which is very sad. But we more focus on what depression actually is, call it our PSA episode if you will. We made it a quick episode. One because it the girls had to leave for the airport and two, because my fucking audio went out! But we're back....kinda! We did another episode as well that I'll put out next week. Haven't heard it yet....but there better be audio!Matt....stop making out with dogs!Mikey....you too!

Cat Rambo, weaver of hundreds of lush story tapestries, returns to the Big Chair at the Roundtable to join co-host Moses Siregar ("Black God's War", and the 'Adventures in SciFi Publishing' and 'Hide and Create' podcasts) and myself, lending her storytelling mojo in the time-honored tradition of a good frothing brainstorm. Seeding the thunder clouds of awesomeness is our Guest Writer, August Grappin. Gus brings a most intriguing coming-of-age tale fraught with oracles, fate, and destinies. As the episode unfolds, it becomes clear it's OUR fate to have a rollicking good time as we brainstorm our way through the tale, unearthing a veritable cornucopia of Literary Gold

This month on The Writer and Critic your hosts, Kirstyn McDermott and Ian Mond, are delighted to bring you Part the Second of their special eBook Extravaganza. Wasting absolutely no time on formalities, the duo roll up their sleeves and get straight into the discussion of their listener-chosen titles. The books on the table for this episode are: The Black God's War by Moses Siregar III (at 2:15) the mark), The Silence of Medair by Andrea K Höst (42:30) and Paintwork by Tim Maughan (1:08:30).  During the discussion, Ian mentions an article on "Writing About Rape" that Jim Hines wrote for Apex Magazine back in January 2012. While this isn't available online, Jim Hines has written two similar pieces which can be found on his blog, along with other useful resources on the subject. If you've skipped forward to avoid spoilers, please tune back in at 1:33:35 for a thoughtful discussion of self-publishing, reading in general and concluding remarks about the last two episodes. Changing gears, next month will see the first non-fiction edition of The Writer and the Critic. Ian has recommended Evaporating Genres, a collection of essays by Gary K. Wolfe, while Kirstyn has picked James Tiptree, Jr.: The Double Life of Alice B. Sheldon, a biography by Julie Phillips. Read ahead and join in the non-fictional fun!

This month on The Writer and the Critic your hosts, Kirstyn McDermott and Ian Mond, present Part the First of their special eBook Extravaganza! Yes, that's right ... unable to condense the discussion of six books into less than three hours, they have wisely decided to split the podcast into two episodes. You're welcome, listeners. After some brief introductory remarks, Kirstyn and Ian jump straight into the dissection of the first three books up on the block: Angelfall by Susan Ee (at the 3:20 mark), Anticopernicus by Adam Roberts (32.15) and The Dark Wife by Sarah Diemer (1:01:20). Along the way, Kirstyn recommends this series of philosophical reviews of Anticopernicus by Rich Puchalsky for further reading, while Ian notes a discussion of difficulty in fiction by Adam Roberts, which was in turn inspired by a 2009 essay by John Lanchester. Sarah Diemer's thoughtful explanation of why she chose to self-publish her books can be found here. For those who've been skipping ahead to avoid spoilers, you can tune back in around 1:30:20 for a very quick wrap-up. Next month, in Part the Second of the eBook Extravaganza, Ian and Kirstyn will discuss the last three books as chosen by listeners: The Black God's War by Moses Siregar III The Silence of Medair by Andrea K Höst Paintwork by Tim Maughan They'd love to hear your feedback on all the eBooks they've discussed!
