Leute, Augenzeugenberichte waren selten so lebhaft.

Meet Alex Day, Managing Director of the UK-based charity Big Give, the organisation multiplies generosity through its match funding campaigns. Founded in 2007 by Sir Alec Reed, founder of Reed Recruitment, Big Give has raised over £233 million in its 16-year history. The charity encourages donors to give to causes and charities and runs match funding campaigns throughout the year to make an extraordinary difference to the world's big challenges. Its largest campaign, The Christmas Challenge, raised an impressive £28 million for over 1,000 charities in 2022. Match funding is a concept that is particularly popular with entrepreneurial and business-minded individuals who want to get the biggest bang for their buck. Big Give commissioned research in 2016 that showed as income brackets increase, the propensity to give by a match funding campaign also increases. Alex discusses the power that match giving can have on increasing generosity, however, he is also aware of the possible limitations. Alex and his team at Big Give view matching as a force for good. They are particularly proud of the fact that their campaigns have benefited smaller grass roots charities who do not have the same ability to raise funds. Alex's path to his current role at Big Give was not a straight one. Initially aspiring to be a professional footballer, typical of children his age in the UK, he pursued a degree in business management and geography from Exeter University. After university, he took time to travel and reflect on what he wanted out of life. He realised that he wanted to contribute something positive to the world through his career, which led him to pursue a role in the international development and humanitarian response sector. Alex's interaction with Big Give began during his time at Medair, a Swiss-based NGO where he led the UK office. He experienced the power of match funding first-hand through the organisation's first match funding campaign with Big Give. A donor who would typically give £1,000 every September donated £2,000 in December to maximize the matching offer, even telling his friends and networks about it. Alex joined Big Give in 2015 and he has played an instrumental role in its growth and ensured millions of pounds have been donated to hundreds of great causes. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mark-longbottom2/message

After two devastating earthquakes hit Turkey and Syria, Inside Geneva podcast host Imogen Foulkes looks at the challenges aid agencies face when compassion and humanity run up against the obstacles of geopolitics. In Syria, the disaster comes on top of 12 years of conflict.“My teams ask me, the people ask me, our partners ask me: why is this happening to us? They just came out of a bitter conflict that's been taking place for years,” says Wael Darwish of Caritas Switzerland in Syria. The conflict in Syria is ongoing. How will aid get to everyone in need?“As a humanitarian of course, frustration is part of my work. We always face these situations where people's needs are not necessarily the priority,” says Miren Bengoa of Swiss Solidarity.Humanitarian agencies are rushing to help. Will they be able to do their job?“We stick to being independent, impartial, neutral, but there is a lot of politics involved, unfortunately,” says James McDowell of Medair. Please try out our French Podcast: the Dangerous MillionsGet in touch!

In this podcast episode, host Imogen Foulkes together with Swiss Solidarity ask: what are the challenges of delivering aid to Ukraine?“In the early days, it just looked like, five or six days, and Ukraine will be taken,” says Zuzana Brezinova, Ukraine country director at Swiss Church Aid HEKS.How do neutral, impartial humanitarian organisations really work in a war zone?“Because we're a neutral organisation we cannot sign memorandums of understanding with military organisations,” says Damon Elsworth, senior global emergency response team officer at Medair. What happens to the millions of Swiss francs donated, especially when donors expect quick results?“People who have been donating, they call our office, they want to know what happened,” says Tasha Rumley, head of humanitarian aid at Swiss Solidarity. And after that first rush of solidarity, is the support really there for the long haul?“As we all know I think, this conflict will not be over by the end of the year,” says Andrea Schmid, emergency aid expert at the Swiss Red Cross.Get in touch!

On "EWTN News Nightly" tonight: At the White House, President Joe Biden held a virtual vaccination summit where he stated, "The United States is buying another half billion doses of Pfizer to donate to low and middle income countries around the world." The Democrat-run House has passed a measure to keep the government open and raise its borrowing limit. Senate Republicans are expected to block it. Meanwhile, progressive Democrats are pushing back on the $3.5 trillion Human Infrastructure Bill. Republican Representative Mike Gallagher joins to share his thoughts on the House passing a budget bill on party lines to raise the debt ceiling. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said failing to raise the debt ceiling would produce a "widespread economic catastrophe" that would permanently weaken the US. Director of the Grover M. Hermann Center for the Federal Budget at the Heritage Foundation, Matt Dickerson, shares his reaction to Secretary Yellen's comments. Finally this evening, Medair is a Swiss-based humanitarian organization inspired by the Christian faith to save lives and relieve human suffering around the world. The organization has more than 1,200 team members in a dozen countries. Engagement director at Medair, Jean-Bernard Palthey, joins to tell us more about his organization and their mission. The 2019 Rotary International Convention in Hamburg, Germany, was covered by RadioRotary interviewers; this is the third report on some of what they found. A Rotarian from the Netherlands told RadioRotary about efforts of her organization to reduce human trafficking with education and empowerment of youth. Another NGO (non-governmental organization) called Medair works to provide quick relief and shelter in cases of disasters or civil conflict. A Rotarian physician from Johns Hopkins in Maryland is part of the Rotary Action Group (RAG) on Mental Health Initiatives, working primarily to reduce high suicide rates in Lithuania and India. A Rotarian from Zambia describes efforts to provide new professions for commercial sex workers; he was promoting the Rotarian shirts made by former sex workers who now operate sewing machines. And, closer to home, Rotarians from Media, Pennsylvania (Jeffrey Cadorette), and Millbrook, New York (Cindie Kish), tell about the polio eradication program known as “Drop to Zero” and the possible drop to ground level from the skies for six Rotarians, including Cindie and Jeffrey, if goals are met. In the second episode of the Humanitarian Incidents podcast, Phil Candy, Security Advisor at Medair, discusses why his organisation adopted a robust online security incident information management system. He explains the benefits of the new system and the challenges Medair have faced its delivery. He also highlights some of the ongoing and future improvements planned for the system to increase its usability and encourage staff across Medair to report even minor incidents to create a clearer picture of its operating contexts. Finally, Phil provides some overarching advice for non-governmental organisations (NGOs) considering the adoption of a SIIM system, stressing the need to balance information sharing and confidentiality. The project is supported by the European Interagency Security Forum, Insecurity Insight and RedR UK and is funded by EU Humanitarian Aid.
Neil talks about the challenges faced by Medair when delivering aid around the world. One of their current challenge is supporting the refugees from Syria because their are so many camps spread over a large area. Qlik and its mapping facility help them pinpoint areas of great need so very little is wasted.

This month on The Writer and Critic your hosts, Kirstyn McDermott and Ian Mond, are delighted to bring you Part the Second of their special eBook Extravaganza. Wasting absolutely no time on formalities, the duo roll up their sleeves and get straight into the discussion of their listener-chosen titles. The books on the table for this episode are: The Black God's War by Moses Siregar III (at 2:15) the mark), The Silence of Medair by Andrea K Höst (42:30) and Paintwork by Tim Maughan (1:08:30). During the discussion, Ian mentions an article on "Writing About Rape" that Jim Hines wrote for Apex Magazine back in January 2012. While this isn't available online, Jim Hines has written two similar pieces which can be found on his blog, along with other useful resources on the subject. If you've skipped forward to avoid spoilers, please tune back in at 1:33:35 for a thoughtful discussion of self-publishing, reading in general and concluding remarks about the last two episodes. Changing gears, next month will see the first non-fiction edition of The Writer and the Critic. Ian has recommended Evaporating Genres, a collection of essays by Gary K. Wolfe, while Kirstyn has picked James Tiptree, Jr.: The Double Life of Alice B. Sheldon, a biography by Julie Phillips. Read ahead and join in the non-fictional fun!
This month on The Writer and the Critic your hosts, Kirstyn McDermott and Ian Mond, present Part the First of their special eBook Extravaganza! Yes, that's right ... unable to condense the discussion of six books into less than three hours, they have wisely decided to split the podcast into two episodes. You're welcome, listeners. After some brief introductory remarks, Kirstyn and Ian jump straight into the dissection of the first three books up on the block: Angelfall by Susan Ee (at the 3:20 mark), Anticopernicus by Adam Roberts (32.15) and The Dark Wife by Sarah Diemer (1:01:20). Along the way, Kirstyn recommends this series of philosophical reviews of Anticopernicus by Rich Puchalsky for further reading, while Ian notes a discussion of difficulty in fiction by Adam Roberts, which was in turn inspired by a 2009 essay by John Lanchester. Sarah Diemer's thoughtful explanation of why she chose to self-publish her books can be found here. For those who've been skipping ahead to avoid spoilers, you can tune back in around 1:30:20 for a very quick wrap-up. Next month, in Part the Second of the eBook Extravaganza, Ian and Kirstyn will discuss the last three books as chosen by listeners: The Black God's War by Moses Siregar III The Silence of Medair by Andrea K Höst Paintwork by Tim Maughan They'd love to hear your feedback on all the eBooks they've discussed!
This month brings the first fresh recording of The Writer and the Critic since the massive pre-record-a-thon back in June. Yours hosts, Kirstyn McDermott and Ian Mond, welcome themselves back into the slightly rusty saddle with a brief catch-up on what they did during their break ... which seems to have been a whole bunch of extracurricular reading and podcasting! Kirstyn confesses to the reading slump in which she currently finds herself bemired, while managing to provide a a handle of capsule reviews along the way. Ian discusses his short story ennui as well as taking the opportunity to plug episodes of Last Short Story and the Martian Drive-In Podcast in which he appeared. Podcast floozy, thy name is Mond. The books tabled for dissection this month are Bitter Greens by Kate Forsyth (beginning around 21:40) and Osama by Lavie Tidhar (at 1:06:10). There are many, many spoilers, including detailed discussions of both endings. Be warned! For supplemental listening, Ian and Kirstyn both highly recommend this episode of Galactic Chat in which Sean Wright interviews Kate Forsyth about the research and writing of Bitter Greens. If you've skipped ahead, please back around the 1:53:00 mark -- yes, it's another loooooong podcast -- for some final remarks and listener feedback. Next month is the special Writer and Critic eBook Extravaganza! Ian and Kirstyn will endeavour to read and discuss the following six -- yes, SIX -- originally self-published eBooks as recommended by their listeners: Angelfall by Susan Ee Anticopernicus by Adam Roberts Paintwork by Tim Maughan The Black God's War by Moses Siregar III The Dark Wife by Sarah Diemer The Silence of Medair by Andrea K Höst Unlike other books featured on the podcast, Ian and Kirstyn will also be commenting on the format, practical readability and publication standards of these six titles in the context of a broader discussion of e-publishing -- and they have given each other permission to abandon any book they find a struggle for whatever reason. Join them for what should be a most entertaining, engaging and edifying episode!
