With nearly 50 years of experience coaching high-level athletes, including Olympic Silver Medalist Raven Saunders, you would be hard-pressed to find someone more knowledgeable than Coach Herbert Johnson. I'm incredibly grateful that he graced us with his presence to help me break down some of the marquee events of the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris!  We start things off with the Women's 100m. American Sha'Carri Richardson looks to cap off an incredible comeback story by bringing home the Gold. But, as always, the Jamaicans have something to say about that. We discuss the differences between Richardson and Shericka Jackson's skillsets plus the odds of sprint legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce to once again find the podium. The Men's 100m has its own USA-Jamaica rivalry. Noah Lyles is one of the most polarizing figures in the sport, but also one of the most talented. Can Jamaicans Kishane Thompson and Oblique Seville silence him? Or will Italy's Lamont Jacobs show the world once again why he's the reigning 100m Gold Medalist? Coach Johnson also talks about how the physiology of sprinters has changed over time.  Then, we move on to discussing the potential of world records falling. Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone's lowered her own 400m hurdle world record at the US Olympic Trials. Can she do it again? Or will Femke Bol prove that Sydney has more to compete against than just the clock? Also, Sweden's Mondo Duplantis is the king of the Pole Vault. Coach explains what makes him so great and what has to happen for him to once again set a world record.  We finish up with the Women's Shot Put! Coach Johnson discovered Raven Saunders as a high school freshman at Burke High School in Charleston, SC. As their coach, he helped guide Raven to the National High School record in the Shot Put. They have once again teamed up heading into this Olympic Games as they look to recreate that magic. Coach Johnson talks about why Raven is his favorite to bring home the Gold but also breaks down why the other athletes will make it a tall task. We also have a conversation about his coaching philosophy, including his years coaching me! It will be called the World Athletics Ultimate Championship and is offering up $10M in prize money with $150,000 going to the winners of each respective event. Think of it as a more compact World Championships – semis and finals for the track events / straight finals for the field events with more money and over less days. Julien Alfred went 10.78, which is the fastest time by a pro this year. Extra fireworks on the men's side as Jamaica's Oblique Seville took down world champion Noah Lyles 10.82 to 10.85. The 2024 Racers Grand Prix in Jamaica produced some electric performances on the track and in the field. The most notable of which turned out to be the Men's 100m Dash where Oblique Seville took down reining World Champion Noah Lyles, running a PB of 9.82 seconds, the fastest time by a Jamaican since Usain Bolt's 9.81 in 2016. Seville has finished 4th place in the 100m at the last two World Championships, but with this performance, is now looking to turn the tides and capture an Olympic medal in Paris this summer. Today I breakdown the highlights from the Racers Grand Prix including Oblique Seville vs Noah Lyles in Jamaica, Julien Alfred's 10.78 PB in the 100m, Jaydon Hibbert's 17.75m Triple Jump as well as share thoughts on Shericka Jackson's recent 200m races. Jamaican Women have dominated the sprints at the Olympic Games over the past 16 years. Since Beijing 2008, they have won 10 out of 12 possible medals in the 100m dash, including all 4 gold medals. But the "Big 3" names of Jamaican Women's sprinting, Shericka Jackson, Elaine Thompson-Herah and Shell-Ann Fraser-Pryce, have all had slightly slower starts to their seasons than in previous years. This week in track and field, Chris Chavez and Anderson Emerole discuss: Kenya cutting down down on its list of athletes for their Olympic Marathon team selection (Find out who is in and who is out); some of the key performances of the Miramar Invitational in Florida; Abby Steiner raced for the first time since season-ending surgery last summer; Olympic silver medalist Christine Mboma is eligible to compete in the 100m and 200m. Topics discussed: – Athletics Kenya has trimmed down on its names for its potential marathon quad for the Paris Olympics. We are now down to five men and six women who are up for selection for the Games. – The Miramar Invitational lost its spice after Sha'Carri Richardson and Shericka Jackson withdrew from the meet in the days leading up to it but we still saw strong runs from Kenny Bednarek, Britton Wilson, Alaysha Johnson and Melissa Jefferson. – In her first race back from surgery to repair a bone spur in her heel that was pressing up against her Achilles, Abby Steiner ran 51.58 to win the 400m at the Gamecock Invitational in South Carolina. – MTA was reportedly asking New York Road Runners for $750,000 a year to make up for the lost toll revenue from shutting down the top and bottom parts of the Verazzano Bridge. – Namibia's Christine Mboma is reportedly now eligible to compete again. She was the Olympic silver medalist in the 200m at just 18 years old. She is now 20 years old but has not competed in the last two years because she's had to undergo hormonal suppression therapy to lower her naturally-high levels of testosterone in her body. In Episode 119 we start off with a review of the weekend's rugby, with England labouring to a win over Japan's Brave Blossoms and Wales beating Portugal in Nice (as well as the usual review of the dining delights on the Cote D'Azur!), whilst Fiji's win against Australia puts Eddie Jones' team at risk of not making the quarter finals. In Tennis it was a win for GB against France that now sets the team up for a tie against Serbia in the Quarter Finals, and in football we look ahead to this week's European competitions, as well as the continuing form of Manchester City in the Premier League. We bring you the results from the Athletics Diamond League Finale in Eugene – with double wins for Jakob Ingebritsen and Shericka Jackson, world records in the Men's Pole Vault and Women's 5,000m and another silver (and another 800m British record) in Keely Hodgkinson's ever growing collection. In Singapore Ferrari's Carlos Sainz led from start to finish on the Marina Bay street course to end Max Verstappen's winning run – although the Dutch driver is still 139 points clear in the driver's championship standings. Following our speculation as to whether Wakefield could spring a surprise relegation escape in Rugby League, their demise was confirmed with one game to go, after a golden point extra-time defeat to Leigh, whilst at the top the battle between Saints, Catalan and Wigan for the league leaders' trophy goes to the final week. And in NFL we had the first Irishman in 38 years playing, as Punter Dan Whelan made his debut for the Green Bay Packers. Another episode packed full of sporting delight.

Stephen Vogt added a sacrifice fly and Tony Kemp an RBI single in the fifth for the A’s, who threw their sixth shutout of the season. Major League Baseball teams head into the final 2½ months of the regular season struggling to fill the stands now that they no longer have to worry about pandemic-related attendance restrictions. MLB reached the All-Star break with an average attendance of 26,409. That represents a drop of 5.4% from the All-Star break of 2019. That’s the last season that wasn’t impacted by the pandemic. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Yesterday Las Vegas Aces 90, Indiana Fever 77 Aces 90, Fever 77 – Wilson, Gray help Aces hand Fever 11th straight loss 90-77 A’Ja Wilson scored 23 points, Chelsea Gray had 14 points and 12 assists and the Las Vegas Aces dealt the Indiana Fever a club-record 11th straight loss, 90-77 on Thursday night.  Wilson scored 14 points and Gray added 12 points and seven assists as the Aces (19-8) built a 52-32 lead by halftime. Las Vegas, which led 25-19 after one quarter, scored the first eight points of the second and led by double digits the rest of the way.  Wilson gave the Aces their largest lead at 68-37 with a 3-pointer at 4:44 of the third period. Victoria Vivians scored 14 points and Kelsey Smith added 10 points and seven assists. Tonight Dallas Wings at Chicago Sky, 8:00 p.m. WNBA – Moscow says US must respect Russian law in Griner case The spokesperson for Russia’s Foreign Ministry says the United States has shown disrespect for Russian law by characterizing basketball star Brittney Griner’s jailing on drug charges as “wrongful detention.” Griner has been jailed since she was arrested in mid-February at a Moscow airport after vape canisters containing cannabis oil were found in her luggage. The Phoenix Mercury standout and two-time Olympic gold medalist acknowledged in court this month that she had the canisters, but said she had no intent to break the law. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Thursday that the legalization of cannabis for medical and recreational use in parts of the U.S. has no bearing on what happens in Russia. NFL – Murray, Cardinals agree to contract through 2028 season Kyler Murray has agreed to a long-term contract that will keep the quarterback with the Arizona Cardinals through the 2028 season. The two-time Pro Bowl selection was taken with the No. 1 overall pick out of Oklahoma after he won the Heisman Trophy and has largely delivered in his quest to make the Cardinals a better franchise. Arizona had a 5-10-1 record during his rookie season in 2019 but the Cardinals improved to 11-6 last season before losing to the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Wild Card round during the playoffs. NBA – Philadelphia 76ers look to build new $1.3 billion arena The Philadelphia 76ers are taking the first steps toward building a privately-funded sports and entertainment arena. The team’s managing partners on Thursday announced the creation of a new development company to create its future home in the city’s Fashion District. They say 76 Place is anticipated to cost about $1.3 billion. Josh Harris and David Blitzer say in a news release they’re committed to creating “a privately funded arena that strengthens ties within the local community through investments that prioritize equity, inclusivity and accessibility.” Groundbreaking is not expected for several years and the project is expected to be finished in time for the 2031-2032 NBA season. The Sixers currently play at Wells Fargo Center. NCAAFB – Georgia’s Smart gets 10-year extension, raise to $10.25M Georgia’s Kirby Smart has agreed to a contract extension through the 2031 season worth more than $110 million that strengthens his status as one of college football’s highest-paid coaches. Smart will be paid $10.25 million this season in base salary and supplemental compensation. He will receive raises each season, which lead to total compensation of $12.25 million in 2031. The extension comes after Smart led the Bulldogs to last season’s national championship, the first for Georgia since 1980. He is 66-15 in six years at Georgia. Smart joins Alabama’s Nick Saban, Ohio State’s Ryan Day, LSU’s Brian Kelly, Michigan State’s Mel Tucker and Texas A&M’s Jimbo Fisher as college football coaches who will make at least $9 million in 2022. Track and Field – Lyles leads U.S. sweep; Jackson tops Jamaica 1-2 in 200 Noah Lyles led wire to wire and routed the field in the 200 meters Thursday in 19.31 seconds, the third-fastest time ever, to lead America’s second sprint sweep at world championships. Lyles blew away U.S. teammates Kenny Bednarek by 0.46 seconds, with 18-year-old Erriyon Knighton finishing third. When the winner saw the names of his American teammates pop up behind his, he slammed his hands on the ground, ripped off his jersey and grabbed the gold medal from the awaiting presenter. His victory came moments after Shericka Jackson gave the Jamaican women another gold in the sprints. She ran 21.45, the second-fastest time in history, to beat 100-meter champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. Olympics – Tokyo Olympic aftermath still being untangled a year later The COVID-delayed Tokyo Olympics opened a year ago on July 23, 2021. They survived the one-year postponement, soaring costs and some public opposition. The aftermath is as difficult to untangle as the Games were to pull off. The Games were to drive tourism and showcase Japanese technology. The pandemic squelched that. The official price tag is $13 billion. The Tokyo city government picked up $5.4 billion in Games expenses and it is now trying to champion post-Games uses for a half-dozen new venues. The head of the Tokyo Games says a main legacy will be using Tokyo to drive a bid for the 2030 Winter Olympics in Sapporo. Cycling – Chris Froome out of Tour de France with COVID-19 Four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome has pulled out of cycling’s biggest race after testing positive for COVID-19. Froome withdrew from the Tour ahead of Stage 18 from Lourdes to Hautacam in the Pyrenees. Froome says in a video message he will now refocus on competing at the Spanish Vuelta next month. HSBB – Former coach criminally charged in naked ‘fat test’ case A Rhode Island high school basketball coach has been criminally charged by authorities who say he asked male student-athletes to remove their clothes so he could check their body fat. Aaron Thomas was charged Thursday with child molestation and sexual assault involving two students. Thomas coached boys at North Kingstown High School since the 1990s until he resigned last year. A lawyer for Thomas says that his client denies wrongdoing and that the tests bettered the athletic performance of many students. Arraignment is scheduled for Aug. 19. Jackie Young added 16 points for Las Vegas, and Dearica Hamby finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. Nalyssa Smith scored 24 points to lead Indiana (5-24). 19. Elaine Thompson-Herah of Jamaica took home three gold medals in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay and broke Florence Griffith Joyner's 100m Olympic record in the process. But the one feat she didn't accomplish in Tokyo was beating American Sha'Carri Richardson.Richardson returns to the track Saturday for the first time since the U.S. Olympic Trials in June. The 21-year-old sprinter was left off the U.S. Olympic roster after she tested positive for marijuana and was handed a 30-day suspension by the U.S. Anti Doping Agency.Richardson will race against the three Jamaican women who completed a podium sweep in the 100m event in Tokyo: Thompson-Herah, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson. Richardson will also run in the 200m alongside Allyson Felix, Gabby Thomas and Jenna Prandini. 2016 200m Olympic gold medalist Dina Asher-Smith of Great Britain will return to the event after she was forced to withdraw from the 200m final in Tokyo due to an injury. Athing Mu will run in the women's 800m event after taking home gold in Tokyo, while Noah Lyles will race against his brother Josephus, 200m silver medalist Kenny Bednarek and 400m hurdles silver medalist Rai Benjamin in the 200m.

A positive drug test cost Sha'Carri Richardson the chance to run for Olympic gold in Tokyo, but the star American sprinter will face the all-Jamaican trio of 100-meter medalists next week at the Prefontaine Classic in Oregon. After finishing first at that distance at the U.S. Olympic trials in June, the 21-year-old Richardson was suspended for a month by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency after testing positive for marijuana, costing her a spot on the U.S. track and field squad.Jamaican sprinters Elaine Thompson-Herah, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson finished in the top three spots, respectively, in the 100 meters in Tokyo – with Thompson-Herah setting an Olympic record with a time of 10.61 seconds.
