"Clinton seeks common ground with Republicans," reported the Associated Press in 1994. "Obama hosts dinner, urges bipartisanship," announced the AP again, in 2009. "Resist Trump? On Immigration, Top Democrats See Room for Compromise," stated The New York Times in late 2024. For decades, we've heard Democratic policymakers extol the virtues of working with Republicans. Through a series of stock terms, e.g. bipartisanship, finding common ground, reaching across the aisle, compromising, they tout their willingness to set aside their political differences with Republicans in order to stop quibbling, quit stalling, work pragmatically, and––the holiest of the holies––Get Things Done. This all might sound well and good; surely an active government is better than an idle, incapacitated one. But which things, exactly, are getting done? Why is it that the act of making decisions or passing legislation is deemed more important to elected officials than the actual content of those decisions and legislation? And how does an incurious, largely compliant media contribute to the harms of a Democratic party that, in its embrace of Republican ideology under the seeming noble banner of "bipartisanship" continues to move further to the right on key issues? On this episode, we dissect the popular appeal for bipartisanship, examine how folksy calls for “Washington” to “work together” more often than not serve to promote war, austerity, anti-LBGTQ policies and crackdown on vulnerable migrants, and show how this seemingly high minded formulation serves to push Republicans further right and launder the Democrats' increasingly conservative political agenda. Our guest is journalist and author Malaika Jabali.

A coalition of Democrat governors is now preparing to challenge any future policies of the Trump administration that could impact their states, including mass deportations of illegal immigrants. They also vow to uphold policies related to access to abortion and diversity programs, among others. Meanwhile, special counsel Jack Smith is preparing to resign. But before leaving, he may release a final report on the findings of his investigations into the allegations against President-elect Donald Trump. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.politix.fmThis week, with so many American liberals and leaders abroad worrying about what a second Trump term will mean for them, Matt and Brian examine the many political differences between fear and fearlessness. For instance:* If Trump's threats have become more literal and less figurative, how can liberals most effectively oppose him without sounding like panicky wimps?* Have Trump-curious business elites taken leave of their senses, or do they really think Trump can't possibly harm American capitalism more than huge corporate tax cuts will “help”?* Do progressives agree that Trump is an existential threat to democracy? And if so, are they receptive to muscular “bring it on” politics, or are crisis and doom the only appeals that speak to them. Then, behind the paywall, Brian and Matt take a look at global and domestic developments—from the Mexican election to diplomacy in the Middle East and the zombie border bill in Congress—to assess how actors with everything on the line are changing their behavior and contingency planning for a second Trump term. If they're freaking out, why shouldn't we be? If the situation is so dire, shouldn't Biden entertain more drastic measures? Can U.S. leaders be simultaneously clear eyed in planning for the worst and resolute (rather than cowering) in their resistance?Answers to all those questions, plus the full Politix archive are available to paid subscribers—just upgrade your subscription and pipe full episodes directly to your favorite podcast app via your own private feed. Further reading:* Matt, on how Trump's scams will only get worse in a second term. * Brian on why progressive activists should lay off murder-suicide threats as “leverage.”* Greg Sargent on the Trump movement's many sadistic fantasies.* Jamelle Bouie on the people (immigrants) who will bear the brunt of this sadism.

Last week Tory rebels in parliament staged a dramatic insurrection against their own Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, blocking his plans for a “no-deal Brexit.” But virtually no Republicans in Congress have resisted Trump. Why is that? D.D. Guttenplan compares and contrasts the two parties and political systems – he’s editor of The Nation, and he’s lived in Britain for the last 25 years. Also: It’s hard to keep track of Trump’s outrages—there are new ones virtually every day. But Nation columnist Katha Pollitt remembers; she discusses almost every bad thing Trump did this summer. And she takes up the question, is Trump getting worse? More unhinged, more desperate, perhaps because he sees that his chances of winning reelection are not good? Plus: Thirteen House Republicans have announced their retirements in the past several weeks—they don’t want to run for reelection in 2020. They are a diverse group, and include moderates as well as conservatives, some newcomers and some with decades of seniority, two of the party’s 13 women, and its only African-American Congressman. How much can the Democrats hope to gain from this development? John Nichols comments--he’s National Affairs Correspondent for The Nation and host of the “Next Left” podcast.

In this week's episode... 00:30 - Happy Black History Month to everyone, especially those who ask "Why isn't there a White History Month?" 01:00 - And Happy Black Panther Month! 02:10 - What can we do for Black History Month? Learn about more black history than just MLK and Rosa Parks *coughWHITEPEOPLEcough* 04:00 - Heather has a theory about a possible candidate for Antichrist. Have you checked your Alexa for the Mark of the Beast? 07:25 - After Jeff Bezos's purchase of Whole Foods, employees are subject to abusive "scorecards" while new stocking systems leave stores with no produce. 09:30 - Amazon is also launching a real-life Black Mirror episode, plotting to outfit workers with creepy tracking devices. 11:25 - Most insidious: Amazon, along with two other major businesses, wants to "fix" healthcare with the aim of more private sector control over medicine. 14:11 - A more symbolic "Mark of the Beast": cashless transactions and automated Near Field technology will further exclude the poor and marginalized from society. 18:25 - Hey MTA: These proposed technological improvements to the subway mean jack if the trains never run on time! 19:28 - (Shout-out to #SwipeItForward) 20:30 - More corporate take-over: Immigrants rounded up by ICE are being held in for-profit prisons. Which are a source of (slave) labor for Whole Foods and Amazon. 22:30 - Was it even worth watching Trump's State of the Union? By Thursday, the White House already had a dozen new scandals taking up the news. And of course, it was riddled with lies. 24:50 - MEMOGATE. The much hyped Devin Nunes memo outing FBI "Deep State" corruption revealed nada. Meanwhile, Leftists are in the uncomfortable position of actually supporting the damn Feds. 26:15 - What are the odds on a Trump impeachment? (As long as the GOP controls congress, exactly nil! - ed.) 29:53 - The results of Dry January are in: Elsa and Heather are still sober! Elsa is back to smoking weed. 33:05 - Yes, it's that time. Time for White Fuckery of the Week! First up, Rose McGowan melts down in a Barnes & Noble with indefensible TERF remarks and general cis aggreivement. As #MeToo heroes go, Rose is not great. 37:25 - Shout-out to Andi Dier, the trans woman who called out McGowan (and is now getting slammed for it). 49:05 - Another #WFOTW: A teacher in The Bronx goes way too far in a history lesson about slavery, traumatizing her black students. This happens a couple times every year, like blue moons and Alec Baldwin spewing misogyny/homophobia in public. 58:21 - Your homework for Black History Month: learn all you can about Black History, Black Present, and Black Future. Read a damn book. Give to black organizations. 58:45 - Shout-out to BYP (Black Youth Project), a great organization for teaching the next generation to organize and lead. Recorded January 13, 2017. Back in 1971, when Democrats were Democrats and Republicans were Republicans, Ted Kennedy opposed Nixoncare because it put Americans' health in the insurance industry's hands. Single payer was the only answer. Nearly 40 years later, the more conservative Obamacare is reviled by Republicans but unanimously embraced by Democrats and their media. Why do we stand by and cheer while both parties pass legislation benefiting the health of their donors' stocks and portfolios? (Listen in for the INSANE profit percentages insurers have made!) Should our lives be dependent on coverage through health insurers who invented the dreadful "pre-existing condition?" Bernie tells a "moderate Democrat" student at a CNN Town Hall ,who is concerned about "demonizing the wealthy," that we have to "change the culture" of our political system and our country. With Donald Trump preaching the "prosperity gospel" at his inauguration, have both parties conspired to get us past the point of changing the culture of profit over people? Did 13 Democrats actually block Bernie's amendment to allow re-importation of drugs from Canada? Will we wake up and realize that both parties are killing us softly with their rhetoric? In our Chicago Progress segment, Steve Edwards of Chicago Socialist Alternative tells us there's still hope! He updates us on upcoming "Resist Trump" events and lays out the rationale for why neither party will provide us with the government that works for the 99%. In every podcast, we offer direct action you can take to resist the insanity of Trump and the Republicans, and redirect the impostors in the Democratic Party. Get involved, get out in the streets, make the calls and let your voice be heard!
