This blogcast explores “Preparing for Lent” written and read by Sarah Harrigan. In this blog post, Sarah shares some of her practices for Lent and how they help draw her closer to Christ. While these can sometimes seem similar to giving something up (i.e. only getting takeout once a week), I challenge you to reframe your thought process regarding these goals. Instead of thinking of them as a negative—giving something up—think of them as adding some sort of value to your life - after all, by offering these acts to God, they are enabling you to participate in Christ's redemptive sacrifice, grow in self-control, and form beneficial new habits. This has been something that I have really struggled with and had to pray over. It has been hard to get out of the negative mindset and focus on transforming myself—mentally, physically, and spiritually—over the course of the Lenten season. However you prepare, I hope that you will go into this holy season with a prayerful attitude and allow yourself to experience change over the course of Lent. I encourage you to find ways to experience the season in an unfamiliar way, to explore new traditions and embrace the holiness of Lent. As we, as a Church, prepare for this Lenten season that will begin on Ash Wednesday, I invite you to take a look at our Lenten and Easter Resource Page. This resource page has many wonderful resources, such as podcasts, webinars, our newly-published “Lenten Activities For Youth and Young Adults” guide, and our “Introduction to Lent: A Time to Draw Closer to the Risen Lord” guide, which has more ideas for practices that can help you enter into the prayerful and transformative spirit of this Lenten season. In this thought-provoking episode with Curtis Chang, we explore a radical shift in how we view anxiety—not as a problem to be solved or eliminated, but as an opportunity to draw nearer to Jesus. Curtis delves into how anxiety often marks the people who approach Jesus, and how it can serve as the catalyst for spiritual growth. We discuss the contrasting approaches of the church and the world to anxiety, with prayer as the church's method of elimination and prescription as the world's solution. Curtis offers a mindset switch that invites us to see anxiety not as a sign of distance from Christ, but as an invitation to step closer to Him. Tune in for a transformative perspective on anxiety that could change the way you experience your faith.Curtis Chang is a consulting professor in innovation and organization at Duke Divinity School and a senior fellow at Fuller Theological Seminary. He is also a faculty member at American University. Curtis has a distinguished background in social innovation, having won an Obama White House award as the founder and head of Consulting Within Reach, a firm dedicated to serving nonprofits and government. His work bridges the worlds of faith, leadership, and mental health, focusing on how spiritual growth can be integrated with personal transformation. Curtis is the author of Engaging Unbelief: A Captivating Strategy from Augustine and Aquinas (IVP) and is a former Rockefeller Fellow. Known for his thoughtful and transformative approach to anxiety, he encourages individuals to view their struggles not as barriers, but as opportunities to grow closer to Jesus. The Prophet Joseph Smith taught “that the book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the key stone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book.” But what exactly are precepts? And how are those recorded in an ancient record relevant to our lives today? In this episode Church history and doctrine professor Dr. Maclane Heward discusses ways to identify key precepts in the Book of Mormon and intentionally incorporated them into our lives. He examines a micro approach (like verse-by-verse analysis) and a macro approach (such as examining larger sections or entire books for overarching themes) for uncovering and understanding precepts. Further, he shares how applying such precepts can lead to personal growth, increased spiritual understanding, and a deeper sense of purpose and direction. By studying and applying the precepts found in the Book of Mormon, we can strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ and develop a closer relationship with him. The Yankees are on the verge of a division title. AP correspondent Dave Ferry reports.
It's Time To Draw Closer Psalm 51:7-12 Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Oh, give me back my joy again; you have broken me - now let me rejoice. Don't keep looking at my sins. Remove the stain of my guilt. Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me. Do not banish me from your presence, and don't take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you. Intro: Matthew 22:37-38 Jesus replied, "You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind." This is the first and greatest commandment. Drawing Closer, It's Time to Deal With Sin Psalm 51:1-4 Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin. For I recognize my rebellion; it haunts me day and night. Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. You will be proved right in what you say, and your judgment against me is just. Psalm 139:23-24 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life. Psalm 51:17 The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God. Drawing Closer, It's Time to Get Clean Psalm 51:7 Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. John 8:10-11 Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, "Where are your accusers? Didn't even one of them condemn you?" "No, Lord," she said. And Jesus said, "Neither do I. Go and sin no more." James 4:8-10 Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world. Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor. Colossians 3:5, 8 So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don't be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behaviour, slander, and dirty language. Drawing Closer, It's Time to Get Back in the Presence Psalm 51:10-11 Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me. Do not banish me from your presence, and don't take your Holy Spirit from me. Revelation 2:4-5 But I have this complaint against you. You don't love me or each other as you did at first! Look how far you have fallen! Turn back to me and do the works you did at first. If you don't repent, I will come and remove your lampstand from its place among the churches. Acts 3:19-20 Now repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away. Then times of refreshment will come from the presence of the Lord, and he will again send you Jesus, your appointed Messiah. Drawing Closer, It's Time to Get Your Joy Back Psalm 51:12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you. Colossians 1:10-11 Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better. We also pray that you will be strenthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy.

Anxiety can impact us in a deep way, especially when it revolves around something incredibly important to us, like when someone we love is hurting, or when we are going through a trial of our own. And in some cases, anxiety becomes more severe. We can't shake the worries and fears, and it actually begins to interfere with daily living. · We stop driving because we're worried about having an accident. · We stop going to church or events or programs because we're uneasy around groups of people. · We stop walking into stores and order everything online because we're afraid about potential violence. There are a lot of great ways to manage or cope with your anxiety, and we don't have time to cover all of them today, but journaling is one of them. Here's a five-minute journaling session for anxiety that will help you name what is going on inside of you and see how God is inviting you to respond. How much sleep do you normally get? What happened to you when you didn't get enough sleep? Did you ever stay up all night? Which part of you was most impacted by lack of sleep: physical, mental, or emotional? I remember a stretch of time when sleep was frequently interrupted. Both kids were getting up for various reasons, whether to use the bathroom or nightmares or what have you. And I was getting woken up every 2-3 hours. And it's hard, isn't it? If you are the parent of a newborn or taking care of a child with disabilities or an aging parent, you know what I'm talking about. But there are other times when we can't get enough sleep, aren't there? We can't get physically comfortable in our bed. Or our minds are racing and we can't find a way to calm them down. Or we're worried about the next day or some big, looming situation that we're in the middle of. Or we feel like we have too much work to get done, and so we frequently stay up late. And whatever the cause, sleep doesn't come easily. God has been showing me that sleep can be a spiritual discipline, too. One of the best practices we can have through the summer to care for our own soul is to read God's Word. This is especially true if we are caring for others around us who might be hurting or going through difficult seasons. If want to know God, if we want to experience Him, if we want to know His heart and desires for us, if we want wisdom as we make decisions for ourselves and our families and our churches, then reading the Bible is really the best way for us to do that. Because it so plainly teaches us about God and the world that He created. Now, does that mean that it's always easy? No. It's not always easy to sit down and read your Bible, and it's not always easy to understand everything that you read. But much of the Bible is written in plain language, and it's full of stories about men and women who have followed God throughout several centuries. Even though this might be a familiar story we are going to read together today, I want you to come to it with an open heart for what God might share with you. We're going to read Jonah chapter 1 together, and I'm going to share a few thoughts that come to mind as I read so you can get a taste of reading God's Word and talking to God about what you're reading. If your desire is to grow in Christ then welcome to this week's podcast. I had the distinct pleasure of speaking with my friend, Dr. Tim Riordan. Dr. Tim is the Pastor at SonRise Baptist Church in Newnan, Georgia, USA. He is a husband, father, grandfather and bestselling author. Despite his many accolades Pastor Tim's greatest desire is to obey the Lord's command to love Him with all his heart and love his neighbour as himself. During this very profound conversation Pastor Tim gave some pointers on how to have and maintain a relationship with Christ and not take our christian walk as a series of tasks to check off our to do lists. You are sure to leave this episode with the thought to reevaluate whether you were truly in relationship with Christ or simply operating based on religion. You can connect with Pastor Tim at http://timriordan.me/ If you're seeking to grow in God get a copy of my book, Draw Closer to God on Amazon or Kindle. The New Year is a natural opportunity for us to look at the spiritual practices and habits we want to cultivate in our lives, especially when it comes to caring for those who are hurting or when we are walking through a difficult season ourselves. I know when I am struggling, I tend to pare back and focus on only a few spiritual practices at a time. Ones that are simple, easy to do, but that also give me space to meet with God and be with Him. So this week, I am sharing the basic content from episode 4: spiritual practices to help you learn to hear God's voice. Each one of these is powerful in and of itself. The temptation for us will be to try to do all of them at once, but what I really want to encourage you to do is to pick just one and lean into that in the weeks and months ahead. Which one resonates most with you? Which one calls to you? Which one fits most naturally into your schedule or routine?
