What happens when the budding feminine is overly empowered by the malevolent masculine? In this conversation, Maverick and Patrick discuss the film 'The Silence of the Lambs' and its standout elements. They highlight the impact of the character Hannibal Lecter, the tension-building in the plot, and the compelling development of the protagonist, Clarice Starling. They also touch on the power dynamics between Hannibal and Clarice, as well as the real-life inspirations behind the characters. The A plot is identified as the interactions between Clarice and Hannibal, while the B plot is Hannibal's escape plan. The main plot of the movie consists of three interconnected dependencies: tracking Buffalo Bill, capturing Buffalo Bill, and Clarice hunting Buffalo Bill. The B-plot is Hannibal Lecter's escape. The movie is unique in that it reveals the identity of the killer early on, focusing instead on the mystery of how everything is connected. The relationship between Clarice and Hannibal is complex, with Hannibal forcing Clarice to confront her fears and grow as a person. Clarice's motivation stems from her traumatic childhood experience of hearing lambs being slaughtered, which drives her to save lives. The ending is ominous, with Hannibal escaping and Clarice receiving a congratulatory call from him. In this conversation, Maverick and Patrick discuss the movie 'The Silence of the Lambs' and its impact. They touch on various themes, including the character development of Clarice Starling, the portrayal of Jack Crawford, the exploration of misogyny, the disturbing nature of Buffalo Bill, and the concept of coveting. They also discuss the cultural impact of the film and its enduring relevance.----------Highlights:0:01 The Impact of Hannibal Lecter8:45 Power Dynamics between Hannibal and Clarice15:42 Hannibal Lecter's Inspiration24:37 A Plot v B Plot35:20 Maverick's Thoughts On Plot Flow40:29 Clarice's Motivation: Saving Lives and Confronting Fears48:02 Dr. Chilton and Jack Crawford52:10 Mysogyny in Silence of the Lambs58:01 Jame Gumb as the villain "Buffalo Bill"1:02:34 Themes and Messages1:08:26 The Cultural Impact and Lasting Relevance----------Show Notes: 9 Points Rating System: https://www.alostplot.com/9-points/ Hannibal Lecter Cookbook: https://a.co/d/05xf31Xa #hanniballecter #silenceofthelambs #claricestarlight #alostplot #filmreview #horror #killer #buffalobill #fbi #bleatingofthelambs #escape #serial #scary #classic #culturalimpact #cookbook #insaneasylum #dr
Ian McMillan is joined by poets and poetry lovers for this celebration of language recorded at this year's Hay Festival. The actor, Harry Potter star, Dickens virtuoso and national treasure Miriam Margolyes shares one of her favourite poems, the 19th century poet Robert Browning's 'My Last Duchess'. Miriam invites listeners to imagine the Duke, who is the speaker in the poem, as being like 'Hannibal Lecter' from 'The Silence of the Lambs' - a good planner, who has killed his wife.Irish novelist Kevin Barry has written three novels and four collections of short stories - a master of dialogue, and a beloved voice in the New Yorker magazine. He explores the poetry of the language in his most recent novel 'A Heart in Winter'.Gwenno has won awards and acclaim for her haunting and groundbreaking song-writing and performances. Gwenno's albums Le Kov and Tresor are in Cornish (she has a Welsh mother and a Cornish father). She joins Ian to share her love of the Welsh artist and poet Edrica Huws, who achieved fame late in life as a visual artist. Her poem 'Vingt-et-un' has stayed with Gwenno, and she explains why Edrica is a creative inspiration. The poet Owen Sheers explores a poem with a stand-out line (what we call on The Verb the 'Neon Line'). This week the poem explored is 'The Lake Isle of Innisfree' by the Irish poet W.B. Yeats. Is it the 'bee-loud glade' that has caught Owen's attention, or something else? Ian finds out. Owen has an acute ear for language, with writing often inspired by his interviews with real people, for books like 'The Green Hollow'.

Far from a simple "issues picture", the movie overcomes many of its retrograde positions and dubious narrative decisions through the combination of Demme's masterful skill behind the camera and two powerhouse lead perfromances from Denzel and Tom Hanks (in a role that would net him his first Oscar win). We track the career of Jonathan Demme, from his time in the Roger Corman stable through his massive hit 'The Silence of the Lambs', and the bold decision to tackle 'Philadelphia' as a project. Then, we discuss the two seismic performances from Hanks and Washington, and how each bring their star-power and career arcs to the roles in vital ways. Finally, we discuss some of the many controversial creative decisions that went into the making of the film, how some might be handled today, and why the film still resonates in spite of these components.Frazier's Top 5 Denzel Washington Performances:1. This week's episode is a delight for anyone who loves to learn about historical events through the lens of fiction. Author Defne Suman brilliantly evokes the sprawling multicultural city of Smyrna through the lives of four families during the early 20th century as the Ottoman Empire is on the brink of collapse. In the first English edition of The Silence of Scheherazade, the writing is utterly beautiful - the sign of not only a talented author, but a skilled translator as well. The story spans 17 years and transports us from the scents of fig and sycamore, and the cries of street hawkers selling their wares, to the heavy smell of kerosene and smoke as the city and its people are engulfed in flames... The book is published by Head of Zeus and available now in all good bookshops. We recommend buying from your local indie or you can get it from our shop on Bookshop.org. In this new retrospective season, James and Imo exchange quid pro quo over a highly influential film from their teenage-hoods: 'The Silence of the Lambs' (1991). After co-host therapy from last week's argumentative episode, the two critics start bleating about the 30-year old psychological thriller's terrifyingly intimate cinematography, thought-provoking depiction of psychopathy, and whimsical excesses. This first of four episodes will chew over the characters and depiction of 'evil' in the 'Hannibal' quadrilogy. Grab your liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti to tune in...or some baked beans and Ribena for the non-serial-killer-cannibals among you!

***** DISCLAIMER ***** I do not own the rights of the sound/audio clips in this episode. 'The Silence of the Lambs' is not based on a true story. It is based on the book of the same name written by Thomas Harris. He based the character of Hannibal Lecter on a convicted killer he had met at a prison in Mexico. Gary Heidnik was a serial killer whose crimes would become the inspiration for the "Buffalo Bill" character in the movie "Silence of the Lambs." In this episode I also discuss my review of the movie, on-screen cameos, character analysis, and why this movie is a timeless classic. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

We are approaching Halloween season, which means we are building towards our annual scary movie episode. That also means we want to see some horror movies on the way, and this week, we're discussing what is one of the most influential horror thrillers of all-time in The Silence of the Lambs. We go deep on this one as we discuss it for well over a half hour, as we really look at its impact and what made it the template for serial killer thrillers going forward. But we also argue that it is much more than just a scary and chilling movie, and we analyze some of the deeper themes of the picture. While we're discussing movies, we have three other reviews including Adam Sandler's latest in Hubie Halloween, an Olivia de Havilland and Errol Flynn war drama from 1940 in Santa Fe Trail and an animated feature with talking animals and robots in Pets United. Informal criminal profiling can be traced as far back as the Middle Ages when inquisitors attempted profiling heretics. It has been officially traced to the 1880s during the Jack the Ripper case. Profiling is described as a method of suspect identification, which seeks to identify a person’s mental, emotional, and personality characteristics based on things done or left at the crime scene, or “Behavior reflects personality.” We cover: HistoryDevelopmentProcessUse in the BTK CaseJoin us on our website https://www.truecrimelabpod.com/ Connect with us on Social Media! - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/truecrimelabpod/ - Twitter: https://twitter.com/thetclpodcast - Gmail: truecrimelabpod@gmail.comSources: (nd). The Welsh writer Arthur Machen defined good and evil as "ecstasies." Each one is a "withdrawal from the common life." On this view, any artistic investigation into the nature of good and evil can't remain safely ensconced our modern, common-life construal of thinigs. It must become fantastic and incorporate aspects of "nature" that feel "supernatural" from a modern standpoint. Jonathan Demme's screen adaptation of The Silence of the Lambs is a powerful example. The film oscillates undecidably between a straightforward crime story and a work of supernatural horror. In this episode, JF and Phil cast Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling as figures in a myth that pits the individual against the institution, the singular against the type, and the forces of light against the forces of darkness.
