Are you sheltered from war? Building on recent conversations about establishing, maintaining and protecting nations, this week's episode focuses on Jimmy T. Murakami's 1986 animated feature, 'When the Wind Blows', to highlight the stark separation between humble abiding citizens and macroscopic geopolitical activities. We also briefly discuss: 'Barefoot Gen' (1983) d. Mori Masaki 'Grave of the Fireflies' (1988) d. Isao Takahata Contact Us E: contact@jimmybernasconi.com IG: https://www.instagram.com/filmsfortoday/
Main Title 2. Shad´s Entrance 3. First Flight 4. Love Theme 5. The alarm Sound 6. Destruction Of Hammerhead 7. Dr. Hephaestus's Station 8. Space Battle Despedida Epiloq - End Title
In honor of Roger Corman's recent passing, we decided not to do a movie he directed... instead we opted for one he was the Executive Procedure of... 1980's classic, Humanoids from the Deep. Directed by Barbara Peeters and Jimmy T. Murakami, with an original score by James Horner.
On this episode of I Am The Wiz, Wiz reviews the 1986 adult animation When The Wind Blows featuring the voices of Peggy Ashcroft and John Mills, directed by Jimmy T. Murakami.

On the latest episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast, the guys to space! Ok...so we've been doing a lot of that lately. But this time it's with 1980's "Battle Beyond the Stars" directed by Jimmy T. Murakami and Roger Corman. Starring Richard Thomas, Robert Vaughn, John Saxon, George Peppard, and Sybil Danning, this space opera latches on to the heels of some other popular sci-fi epic that came out just a few years earlier, but also borrows heavily on a different Kurosawa film (this time it's "Seven Samurai"). With a star-studded cast and a unique production design, how does "Battle Beyond the Stars" hold up? Check out the latest episode to find out(and also check out our Patreon)!
After last week's Avedon/Rothrock stitch-up, there was only one thing for it. It's time to break glass for a low-budget sci-fi adventure, Battle Beyond the Stars! Murakami and stars Richard Thomas, Robert Vaughn, George Peppard, John Saxon, Sybil Danning, and Darlanne Fluegel. Gabe and Now Playing Network head honcho Jim Laczkowski – who you may remember from Director’s Club Podcast and Voices & Visions, among others – take a deep dive into the soul-crushing world of Nuclear Panic Movies. Again, this subject is too broad for a single podcast, so we’ve broken the discussion down to a series of movies released at the height of ‘80s Cold War paranoia between 1983 and 1988. Jim sets the stage by filling Gabe in on a couple ‘60s entries – Fredric Gadette’s This is Not a Test (1962) and Ray Milland Panic in Year Zero! (1962) – then they dig in, like atomic radiation tearing its way through flesh, bone, and marrow. Subject matter includes Nicholas Meyer’s The Day After (1983), Mick Jackson’s Threads (1984), Lynne Littman’s Testament (1983, #52FilmsByWomen), Edward Zwick’s Special Bulletin(1983), Fred Barzyk’s Countdown to Looking Glass (1984), Mori Masaki’s Barefoot Gen (1983; Gabe also quickly discusses the legacy of Hiroshima/Nagasaki-themed movies), Jimmy T. Murakami’s When the Wind Blows (1986), Steve De Jarnatt’s Miracle Mile (1988), and John Duigan’s One Night Stand (1984). Gabe closes things out with a quick mention of Konstantin Lopushansky’s Dead Man’s Letters (1986), which is otherwise dense enough to fill an entire podcast on its own. Follow along with this handy Letterboxd list (ranked by release date): https://letterboxd.com/gabepowers/list/nuclear-panic-movies-of-the-80s/ Tune in next month when Gabe and Tracks of the Damned’s Patrick Ripoll cram every single slasher movie released in the year 1981. The next Akira Kurosawa film is probably his best-known — and certainly most-imitated — film: SEVEN SAMURAI (1954). We both really enjoyed this (one more predictably so than the other); after some general discussions of community feeling and individuality, we get more specific about the social hierarchies of the film, dive into Kurosawa's cinematography once more, and end with a good, old-fashioned nerd-off. Next Week's Film DODES'KA-DEN (1970): Kurosawa's first film in colour. Get the DVD for £5.34, here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/DodesKa-Den-Junzaburo-Ban/dp/B00ABAYWIK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1506152619&sr=8-1&keywords=dodeskaden. This Week's Media WONDER WOMAN (2017): Patty Jenkins, Gal Gadot, Chris Pine THE DEFENDERS (2017): Douglas Petrie, Charlie Cox, Krysten Ritter Recommendations BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS (1980): Jimmy T. Murakami, Richard Thomas, Robert Vaughn HEROES (2006—10): Tim Kring, Santiago Cabrera, Jack Coleman THRONE OF BLOOD (1957): Akira Kurosawa, Toshiro Mifune, Isuzu Yamada 13 ASSASSINS (2010): Takashi Miike, Kōji Yakusho, Takayuki Yamada Footnotes There's more on the visuals of Kurosawa and this film's influence in cinema, here: http://www.indiewire.com/2017/05/seven-samurai-akira-kurosawa-masterpiece-influence-filmmakers-mad-max-fury-road-1201811690/. Finally, while the visual presentation of this website is truly horrible, there's some interesting stuff on the objective/subjective shots that Rob discusses this week: http://www.videoeditingsage.com/camera-angles-objective-and-subjective.html.
