Scripture Untangled

In this episode of Scripture Untangled, seasoned journalist Lorna Dueck speaks with Dr. Jeff Green, CBS Vice President of Scripture Translation about Bible translation, Indigenous languages, and the way Scripture in your heart language inspires hope, strengthens identity, and deepens faith. In this episode, Jeff and Lorna discuss:  Jeff's journey from a church-rooted upbringing and studying math at Waterloo to discovering Biblical languages and Bible translation as his life's work. Why heart language matters, and why people need Scripture in the language that speaks most deeply to them, not just one they can partially understand. How the Canadian Bible Society works alongside Indigenous communities under local leadership to support Scripture translation in heritage languages. The healing and hope of Scripture in Indigenous languages: language loss, revival, community restoration, and the powerful truth that “God speaks my language.” Why Bible translation is not solo work, but involves church leaders, translators, reviewers, and whole communities. Read the transcript: https://biblesociety.ca/transcript-scripture-untangled-s13-ep7  =====Jeff has been involved in Bible translation since 2001. He and his family spent 11 years in East Asia, where he served with Wycliffe/Summer Institute of Linguistics in a Bible translation project and in many other roles. He helped his colleagues with their linguistic analysis and Bible translation work as a linguistics consultant and a translation consultant. He taught linguistics at both the undergraduate and graduate levels for Canada Institute of Linguistics in Langley, BC and as part of their partnership with Tyndale University College in Toronto, ON, and for Payap University in Chiang Mai, Thailand. His leadership experience includes serving as Language and Culture Learning Coordinator and as the coordinator of a Bible translation community of practice focused on the Himalayan region. Since joining CBS, Jeff has been a translation consultant on projects in Plains Cree, Iñupiatun, Inuinnaqtun, Inuktitut, Mohawk, Blackfoot, Kwak'wala, and Punjabi. He supports the wider Bible translation movement by serving as Managing Editor of The Bible Translator journal and as an Academic Mentor in the Master of Arts in Translation of Scripture program at Northwest Seminary and Canada Institute of Linguistics. He enjoys teaching others the things he's had the opportunity to learn and helping others with the technical aspects of Bible translation work. Jeff earned a Doctor of Ministry degree in Bible Translation from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Massachusetts. Welcome back to The Busy Vibrant Mom podcast! I'm your host, Michelle Byrd — and I'm so glad you're here.  If you've ever tried to follow a productivity system that worked beautifully for someone else… but completely fell apart in your real life, this episode is for you. So many busy moms and working women are doing their best to balance work, family, and the things they care deeply about—yet still feel frustrated when the to-do list never ends and the time never feels like enough. We're ambitious, creative, and capable… and often way too hard on ourselves when we don't get it all done. Today, I'm joined by a special guest, Jessie Kwak, and I'm so excited to share this conversation with you. Jessie is an author, storyteller, business book ghostwriter, and book coach living in Portland, Oregon. She's written everything from thriller novels to sci-fi crime series, along with several productivity books—including From Chaos to Creativity and From Big Idea to Book. At her core, Jessie loves telling stories and helping others learn how to tell their own. In this episode, Jessie and I talk about why there's no one-size-fits-all approach to productivity, how to stop being overly ambitious with your time, and why understanding your own energy and productivity style matters so much—especially in busy seasons. We also dig into practical ideas like outsourcing household tasks, shifting from “should” to “could,” saying no without guilt, and making consistent progress on meaningful work—even if you only have 30 minutes at a time. This is a refreshing, honest conversation about doing less, choosing better, and creating space for what matters most—without burning yourself out. So grab your coffee or tea, settle in, and let's dive in.   Contact Info for Jessie Kwak: Website: https://www.story-rebel.com IG: @story_rebel   Quick Announcement  We have some fun things coming up.   -The Mom's Spring Break Bundle (26 resources for $27) Ending April 30th https://strideproductivity.thrivecart.com/moms-spring-break-bundle/?affiliate=renew_conference - Free Summit 4/20-4/24- Calm Connected Parenting Summit: https://link.calmconnectionparent.com/ccp-2026/byrd - Other things: lots of new podcast guests to keep the episodes interesting, introduce you to some amazing new people, and learn something new along the way.  New website almost done - planning some fun ways to celebrate!    I pray this episode blesses you! Coaching episodes are some of my favorites to record — and if the messages I get are any indication, they're some of yours to listen to. There's something that happens in a real, unscripted coaching conversation that you just can't do in advance. I have no idea what the person is going to need at the moment and that's what makes these conversations so authentic to what coaching really is! Just an actual human working through something real, in real time, with all the honest uncertainty and genuine clarity that comes with it.In this episode, I'm joined by my friend Jessie Kwak — author, ghostwriter, and story coach — who came to this conversation at what I'd call a true pivot moment in her business. Jessie had built a successful ghostwriting practice, one that grew almost entirely through reputation and referrals, and yet something needed to change. The work she was doing could only scale so far, and she was ready to figure out what came next. She just didn't know which path to take — and that not-knowing was starting to feel like something was wrong with her. (Spoiler: nothing was wrong with her.)What unfolded was one of those sessions where things start to click, one by one. We got into her business model, her natural gifts, and the real difference between being confused about your next move and being bad at what you do. By the end, Jessie went from feeling like she was standing in a field full of unclear game trails to having one obvious path forward. If you've ever been at that exact crossroads — good at your work, ready for more, but genuinely unsure how to make the leap — this one is going to land.In this episode:Why confusion about your next business move has nothing to do with whether you're actually good at what you do — and why collapsing those two things together makes everything harderThe "one sun" business model concept and why everything in your business needs to revolve around one clear center offerWhy narrowing down to a specific niche isn't limiting — and why the fear that your audience is "too small" is usually the thing keeping you stuckWhy starting one-to-one — even when you're dreaming of a group program — is actually the move that sets you up for long-term successHow to build your offer around what your client actually needs to get results, and then charge accordingly — instead of building it around how little access you want to giveWhat boundaries in business actually mean, and how knowing your own needs shapes your offers in ways that work for everyoneWhen Jessie came into this conversation, she was standing at a crossroads that so many of us know well — good at the work, ready for the next chapter, but genuinely unsure which direction to walk. By the time we wrapped, the path was clear. That's what coaching can do. And if anything in this episode cracked something open for you too, I hope you'll let us know. You can connect with Jessie on Instagram and at www.story-rebel.com.

Forty days to an assassination. We dive into Woo Min-ho's icy political thriller The Man Standing Next — a gripping, true-events drama about KCIA director Kim Gyu-pyeong (played by Squid Game's Front Man, Lee Byung-hun) as he weighs loyalty, country, and a bullet. What the film's aboutAfter years in President Park Chung-hee's inner circle, Kim watches the regime harden: political purges, wiretaps, street crackdowns, and a rival enforcer (Chief Kwak) pushing for blood. When a former KCIA boss defects to the U.S. and threatens to publish a tell-all, the fuse is lit. The film tracks the 40 tense days that culminate in one of South Korea's most consequential nights. What we get into on the podPower, paranoia, and proximity: what it costs to be “the man standing next” to a dictator. The Washington angle: congressional testimony, ambassadors pulling strings, and how U.S. pressure shapes the endgame. That dinner sequence: whisky, insults, and a single decision that changes a nation.History vs. thriller: how the movie compresses real events without losing the knot-in-the-stomach tension.Performances & craft: Lee Byung-hun's controlled implosion, swaggering Kwak, crisp night photography (you can actually see it!), and the score's slow dread. The big themes: loyalty vs. survival, “order” vs. democracy, and why authoritarian systems eventually eat their own.Plus, our usual chaosA delightfully deranged Top 5 mash-up: Cowboys and Waiting Rooms (yes, really).A lightning-round quiz: “Korea or Career?” (parasites, broadcasters, pig-based corporate malfeasance — you had to be there).Should you watch the film first? We do reveal key plot points (including the ending), so if you want the full cinematic punch, watch first. Teen, Joseph Koenig, Convicted of Murder For Dropping Boulders Off Busy Overpass Jurors in Jefferson County needed barely two hours Friday morning to convict Joseph Koenig of first-degree murder for hurling a landscaping rock through the windshield of Alexa Bartell's moving car, killing the 20-year-old as she drove near Arvada in April 2023. Deliberations began late Thursday and resumed at 9 a.m.; by 10:45, the panel had returned guilty verdicts on every one of the 19 counts Koenig faced. Koenig, now 19, stood accused not only of Bartell's murder but of unleashing a late-night rock-throwing spree that terrorized motorists across northwest metro Denver. Prosecutors charged him with nine counts of attempted first-degree murder for the other cars struck, three counts of second-degree assault, and six counts of attempted second-degree assault. While the jury found Koenig guilty on each allegation, several counts were reduced under Colorado law. Last week jurors heard from nearly two dozen witnesses, including victims who recalled the sudden shatter of glass and the panic of losing control at highway speed. The most damning testimony came from Koenig's two friends—Nicholas “Mitch” Karol-Chik and Zachary Kwak—who took plea deals and told the jury Koenig threw the fatal rock. The defense pounced on Karol-Chik's earlier statement to police suggesting Kwak hurled the final stone, but both men insisted on the stand that Koenig was responsible for Bartell's death. Koenig himself never testified. Instead, defense lawyers called Laurence Steinberg, a Temple University adolescent-brain researcher, to argue that impulsivity and Koenig's ADHD lessened his culpability. Deputy District Attorney Katharine Decker countered in a pointed cross-examination, pressing Steinberg to acknowledge that teenagers can still foresee lethal consequences. Koenig was a high school senior at the time of the incident. Originally scheduled for trial last summer, the case was postponed for a court-ordered mental-health evaluation after Koenig's attorneys cited an ADHD diagnosis and borderline personality disorder. Closing arguments Thursday distilled the stakes: prosecutors said Koenig acted “knowingly and intentionally,” while defense attorney Martin Stuart asked jurors to convict only of reckless manslaughter—calling his client “guilty of a crime, but not murder.” Evidence showed that Koenig, Karol-Chik, and Kwak circled back to the crash scene on April 19, 2023, photographing Bartell's disabled Chevy Spark instead of checking on her or dialing 911. That callous post-attack behavior, prosecutors argued, underscored Koenig's indifference to human life. After the verdict, Bartell's mother, Kelly, stood outside the courthouse clutching a framed photo of her daughter. “These have been the hardest two years of our lives, but we got justice today,” she said through tears. “It doesn't bring Alexa back, and that's horrible. But we hope no family ever has to live this nightmare again.” District Court Judge Mark Randall set Koenig's sentencing for June 3 at 8:30 a.m. Victims and relatives will be allowed to address the court before penalties are imposed; a first-degree murder conviction in Colorado carries an automatic life sentence with the possibility of parole after 40 years. Karol-Chik and Kwak, who pleaded guilty last year to lesser charges—including second-degree murder and multiple counts of attempted assault—are scheduled to learn their fates on May 1 and May 2, respectively Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Matty Dalrymple talks with Jessie Kwak about CREATING YOUR OWN COMMUNITY. Our conversation was triggered by the fact that Jessie recently hosted the first Author Alchemy Summit, and I wanted to find out what had made her decide to dive into this huge community-building undertaking. But even if organizing your own conference isn't on your bucket list, the best practices she shares are generalizable to all sorts of other big projects that might be on your wish list: testing your commitment to a major undertaking, the importance of engaging a team of helpers, the challenge of delegation, battling imposter syndrome, gathering supporters and offering them opportunities (rather than asking for favors), achieving balance with the rest of your work, the importance of avoiding task-switching, and following the flow of your energy. I also think that hearing about what is involved in being a conference organizer can help us be better (and more empathetic) conference attendees, but Jessie also offers some great practical tips for us as attendees, including how to find the conferences that best meet our goals and networking for introverts.   Interview video at https://youtu.be/nYzT1gxxK90   Show notes (including summary and transcript) at https://www.theindyauthor.com/237---creating-your-own-community.html   If you find the information in this video useful, please consider supporting The Indy Author! https://www.patreon.com/theindyauthor https://www.buymeacoffee.com/mattydalrymple   Jessie Kwak is an author and business book ghostwriter living in Portland, Oregon. She is currently working at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London, UK, on the Cardiothoracic Team doing complex aortic surgery. On top of her clinical duties, Dr. Mastracci is dedicated to studying the social and non-clinical factors influencing vascular outcomes.    Dr. Olamide Alabi (@OAlabiMD) is an Associate Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery at Emory University School of Medicine. In this episode we chat to Jan Kwak who is Managing Director of Australia and Asia at Hatch, who are a global multidisciplinary leader in engineering, operational and development company with projects in metals, energy and infrastructure across the globe. With more than three decades of experience at Hatch, Jan has cultivated a hands-on approach to the business, playing a pivotal role in its growth to its current state and is a strong advocate of inclusive cultures in engineering and the workplace. He believes that all who show passion and dedication to their vocation should have a chance to grow and thrive. We discuss the growing gender diversity in STEM industries, gender pay gap as well as emerging industry trends. What women in our industry need to do excel and what men need to do to encourage more inclusivity in the workplace. KEY TAKEAWAYS Gender diversity and inclusion in the mining industry are crucial for innovation and competitiveness. Men play a significant role in creating an inclusive culture and normalising diversity in the workplace. Women need to be confident and assertive to break through into higher positions in the industry. Industry organisations like Women in Mining provide essential support and mentorship for women in the field. The energy transition and adoption of AI in the mining industry are key areas for growth and innovation in the coming years. BEST MOMENTS "The mining industry is in a period of rapid change, and we need new ideas, new ways to serve society's needs at the highest level."  "Men need to create space and be inclusive to normalise an inclusive culture for women to succeed in the industry."  "The gender pay gap is a measurement of the lack of women in senior roles. It'll be zero when women are just as likely to be in high-paying roles as men."  "It's time to start innovating again and try new things in the mining industry to stay competitive and adapt to change."  "I really hope the circular economy becomes real and that companies start trying new, real options for energy transition in 2024."  VALUABLE RESOURCES Mail:        rob@mining-international.org LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ X:              https://twitter.com/MiningRobTyson YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DigDeepTheMiningPodcast  Web:        http://www.mining-international.org https://www.hatch.com/ ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first-world to third-world countries from Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. It's Hump Day! First, Emma speaks with attorney Stephen Bright and James Kwak, law professor at the University of Connecticut, to discuss their recent book The Fear of Too Much Justice: Race, Poverty, and the Insistence of Inequality in the Criminal Courts. Then, she's joined by writer Katherine Stewart to discuss her recent piece in The New Republic entitled "The Claremont Institute: The Anti-Democracy Think Tank".  First, Emma runs through updates on tonight's GOP Presidential Debate, Trump's various legal battles, the UPS-Teamsters agreement, Hollywood's anti-labor action, child labor in the US, Ed Bloom's new anti-education lawsuit, a potential Oregon Supreme Court case on homelessness, and various geopolitical discourses, before admiring Climate Defiance's recent action in front of a Maura Healey fundraiser. Stephen Bright and James Kwak then join, first diving into Bright's history with capital punishment in the US over the last four decades, making him ever so intimate with the criminal-legal system's myriad injustices, blatant race discrimination, and severe power imbalance in favor of the prosecution, before stepping back to analyze why the conversation of the role of race and poverty in capital punishment is so centered on the southern US, despite racism, poverty, and death sentences all existing in the north as well. Next, Bright and Kwak parse through the drastic power imbalance that comes from the simultaneous hyper-politicization of the legal system through prosecutors alongside the deprioritization and underfunding of public defense, walking countless examples of prosecutorial injustice and the malpractice of certain supposed public defenders. Bright and Kwak then focus on the Supreme Court case of McCleskey v. Kemp, and the eventual decision that, despite overwhelming evidence of racist bias in the endorsement, sentencing, and execution of the death sentence, said bias cannot be used as an argument in individual cases, in “fear of too much justice, before wrapping up by walking through the compiling and countless injustices of the criminal legal system and its death penalty. Katherine Stewart then walks Emma through the greater history of the Claremont Institute, and its evolution from a standard conservative think tank to the far-right, anti-democratic, neo-confederate thought leader that it is today – playing host to multiple Trump co-conspirators. Stewart begins by tackling the basis for the institution's radicalization, including who the major players were, and the bigoted arguments they were able to put forth, from gender and race segregation to citing public Nazis as inspiration, before wrapping up with its culmination in the battle against “woke,” the right's attacks on education, and their ultimate goal of affirmative action for conservative men. And in the Fun Half: Emma tackles the renters' nightmare that is the modern-day United States, Dave from Jamaica critiques recent “male loneliness discourse,” Tim Pool and Moonlord eviscerate the non-existent authoritarian hygiene and total-lockdown policies of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Noel from Queens tackles the Democrats' need to be aggressive about literally anything. Newsmax goes all-in on homophobia, a Televangelist comes for Barbie's Dreamhouse, and Bailey from NC expands on the hell of economic life in America, plus, your calls and IMs!
