Hope you’re hungry, because this is a big one - our retrospective of the defining yuri manga of the 2010’s, Kase-san! We couldn’t digest a series this savory by ourselves, so we invited on some yuri connoisseurs to help us devour all the gay girly goodness - TomoChoco hosts Kit and Sarah and returning guest Erica Friedman, founder of Okazu and Yuricon! Together we feast on the wonderful bounty of yuri loveliness Kase-san provides, including its resilient publication history, the sweet relationship of its central couple, its mature exploration of their libidos, how it boldly graduates them from high school to college, and so much more! Though, we also go on many tangents too, discussing an assortment of sorta related things like how much better Tokyo’s transit is compared to New York’s, the best anime to watch at the gym, dubs vs. subs, and other random things! But we mostly keep it on track to talk about Kase, and everything we love about this trailblazing, decade-spanning yuri staple! And with all that said, this podcast brings us to the end of LGBThanksgiving! Our Dreams at Dusk is a beautiful manga that explores characters across the LGBTQ+ spectrum in different phases of their life, struggling to be accepted for being themselves, and finding a community and support network in one another. It made waves when Seven Seas released it in English last year, and after reading it we knew we had to talk about it on the show! We’ve also brought on a very special guest to discuss the series with us - Jocelyne Allen, translator of Our Dreams at Dusk and so many other amazing manga! Jocelyne shares her insights on the series as its translator, shedding some light on some pivotal scenes and language used in the story. She also discusses her career history in translation, including her early career as a translator for Honda, differences between translating novels and manga, her experiences interpreting, and so much more! Our Dreams at Dusk is a beautiful manga that explores characters across the LGBTQ+ spectrum in different phases of their life, struggling to be accepted for being themselves, and finding a community and support network in one another. It made waves when Seven Seas released it in English last year, and after reading it we knew we had to talk about it on the show! We’ve also brought on a very special guest to discuss the series with us - Jocelyne Allen, translator of Our Dreams at Dusk and so many other amazing manga! Jocelyne shares her insights on the series as its translator, shedding some light on some pivotal scenes and language used in the story. She also discusses her career history in translation, including her early career as a translator for Honda, differences between translating novels and manga, her experiences interpreting, and so much more! We had a delightful conversation with Jocelyne, discussing everything that makes this manga such a dream come true for queer manga fans of all ages! But our dream doesn’t end with this podcast! Covers Claudine by Riyoko Ikeda (it’s only one volume long!) Though Riyoko Ikeda’s classic manga featuring a transgender protagonist originally came out in 1978, it was officially released for the first time in the US in the summer of 2018 (40 YEARS LATER!). S&T host Ashley asks Jocelyne Allen, the translator of Claudine (and many other manga), about the use of gender pronouns and other translation challenges with this work that's set in early 1900s France, originally published in 1970s Japan, now being translated for late 2010s America. Plus, Jocelyne and Ashley walk through Claudine’s three romances, ponder if queerness coupled with tragedy are implied to be cyclical, and take a gender quiz that begs the question: Could Claudine be a mech?
