The Astro City Mini launched in late 2020 as part of Sega's 60th Anniversary celebrations. The last truly "new" mini Sega released, it played host to a number of titles that never came home, and a supposedly perfect conversion of Virtua Fighter. Did it deliver, four years on, when the SEGAGuys got their units?

The SEGAGuys look back over the big stories of 2024, modern and retro, and pick their top ten Sega moments.
A passionate exploration of the rise and fall of the Sega Genesis. It's clear that the Genesis left an indelible mark on the gaming industry and had a profound impact on your own gaming journey. From its origins as Sega entered the gaming scene in the early 80s to its fierce rivalry with Nintendo, the Genesis carved its own path and introduced innovative hardware and iconic games. The console war between Sega and Nintendo during the 90s was a defining moment for the gaming industry. With a strong lineup of games like Fantasy Star and Streets of Rage, the Genesis held its ground. The competition intensified when Nintendo released the Super Nintendo or Super NES, leading to wild strategies employed by both companies to win over gamers. The inclusion of Mortal Kombat with blood on the Genesis attracted many players, and Sonic the Hedgehog became an iconic symbol of speed and attitude. However, as you highlighted, Sega started facing challenges with its decision to release numerous add-ons like the Sega CD and the 32X, which fragmented the market and strained the company's resources. The arrival of the PlayStation and the ill-fated Sega Saturn further impacted Sega's position in the industry. Despite the decline of the Genesis and Sega as a whole, the console's legacy and impact continue to resonate. Its focus on sports games and multiplayer experiences, along with iconic titles like Sonic and exclusive licensed games, set it apart. The Genesis showcased technical feats like Virtual Fighter Two and even had a portable version, the Sega Nomad. As we conclude this episode, we eagerly anticipate diving deeper into the final part of this series, exploring the rise and fall of Sega itself. Thank you, Jr, for sharing your insights and taking us on this nostalgic journey through the gaming history of the Sega Genesis. Stay tuned for more captivating episodes here on West Virginia UNcommonplace.

In this podcast, James and Dan discuss why those modified Saturn's should be avoided and what you can do to better preserve your own system.

Sega Saturn byla totiž hned v následujícím roce připravena k uvedení, a kvůli tomu vývojáři ani hráči neměli o 32X velký zájem. Přestože měla dva 32bitové procesory a vykreslovala 3D grafiku, trpěla slabou knihovnou her a nízkým zájmem veřejnosti. Sega musela konzoli rychle zlevnit a nakonec ji doprodala s výraznou slevou. When the Dreamcast was first revealed, it was done so alongside the NAOMI Board. James the Segaholic and Dan the Mega Driver discuss this legendary arcade system.

TCW Podcast Episode 207 - SEGA Saturn Part 2 In the second part of our examination of the SEGA Saturn, we delve into its influences, challenges, and lasting impact. Beginning with a detailed analysis of its pricing strategy, we scrutinize the psychological effect of pricing items at $99, creating an illusion of affordability. We then explore the cultural context in Japan, highlighting the tradition of Otoshidama and its influence on the perception of video games compared to the United States. Additionally, we investigate the collaborative efforts between SEGA of Japan and SEGA of America, particularly in the development of the 32X add-on for the SEGA Genesis. Despite potential advancements, concerns arose about the perceived high cost for a market still viewing video games as disposable toys. The emergence of SEGA's arcade division further complicated matters with the release of Virtua Fighter, signaling the advent of 3D gaming. This shift was notably exemplified by Virtua Fighter's port to the Saturn and the success of SEGA Rally Championship in Japan. Conversely, in the United States, the allure of sprite-based consoles persisted, while the rapidly expanding library of the PlayStation overshadowed the Saturn's appeal. The Dreamcast is a console that just seems to endure as the years go on, attracting new fans and exciting old ones just as much as it did back in the day. But what is it about the Dreamcast that makes its legacy live on? What makes it so appealing even today? We discuss.
