This episode has EVERYTHING: gay haircuts, yearning, rage against the patriarchy, they were *roommates*....let's talk about the magical world of Yoshiya Nobuko, girls' culture, and lesbian fiction in Taishō era Japan! Leigh is joined by guest host Erica Friedman, speaker, editor, researcher and an expert on all things Yuri. Yoshiya Nobuko was an extremely popular writer in 20th century Japan who lived with her beloved female partner for 50 years and her legacy continues today as “the Grandmother of Yuri.”. The tropes and storylines established in her writing can still be seen today in queer girls stories in and outside of Japan– get ready to learn all about modern Japan's very own Sappho. After all, it's all in the yearning. Nagata Kabi has explored her struggles with her physical and mental health in her previous memoirs, and now turns her attention to one of her biggest lifelong hurdles - love. Okazu founder and yuri scholar extraordinaire Erica Friedman joins us once again to discuss the latest chapter in Kabi's ongoing and evolving memoir narrative, My Wandering Warrior Existence. Kabi uses the evocative image and anecdote of holding a wedding dress photo shoot as a springboard for exploring her desire to love and be loved, and her frustrations figuring out how to do that, including her experiences with online dating apps. We come to understand why she's afraid to meet and form relationships with people, a response that stems from lingering issues about her own negative self-image, and a mistrust of other people in part caused by, CONTENT WARNING, a horrifically traumatic sexual assault she experienced as a child. Which, because of the particular descriptiveness and upsetting nature of the story, we encourage you to use your discretion and the timestamps in the podcast breakdown below as to whether you rather skip that part of the discussion. But lest you fear Wandering Warrior finds Kabi drowning in her sorrows and traumas, we discuss how the book instead reflects the emotional growth and self-awareness that Kabi has come to understand over her previous books. This book finds Kabi taking in her memoirs in a new, confident direction with a clear thesis and structured storytelling designed with a message to the reader in mind, and we explore how it represents a positive direction for her as an artist and storyteller as we appreciate the messages she imparts in the book and her experiences and thoughts resonate with our own. Kabi may still be a wanderer in the landscape of love, but like a warrior, she's held firm in her resolve to find happiness, and we're more than happy to travel with her on her journey into whatever unknown territory the future may bring. On this episode of Manga Mavericks, we're joined by founder of Okazu and yuri scholar, Erica Friedman, to once again revisit the works of Nagata Kabi with a discussion of another one of her self-reflective personal memoirs with My Alcoholic Escape From Reality! In which we visit Kabi during her time recovering in the hospital from severe pancreatitis due to her excessive drinking, as well chronicling through her artist's journey of deciding between working on either fiction or non-fiction. We discuss our thoughts on this book in particular and once again grapple with the difficult and complicated feelings we get from reading Kabi's works as pieces of entertainment, as well as her journey as an artist up to this point. This discussion was one we originally recorded around the time of its English release last year and uploaded exclusively on Patreon as a bonus podcast, but have made it available to the public in time for our upcoming episode on Kabi's newest memoir with My Wandering Warrior Existence, coming next week! But if you can't wait until then, its already available over on our Patreon at our $2 tier for those who want to listen to it early! Hal Herzog is a professor of psychology at Western Carolina University, whose research entails the complex psychology of human-animal interactions for over three decades. These studies have been published in many journals, including Science, Animal Behavior and The American Psychologist to name a few. He also is the author of ‘Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat' and writes the blog Animals and Us on Psychology Today. Hal shares with us his love of animals from childhood, specifically reptiles. He quotes collecting reptiles during high school such as the boa constrictor, rat snakes, turtles etc. Hal then goes on to reference how his interest in human-animal interactions formed through his neighbours. They invited Hal to view a cockfighting match, which Hal initially refused. Eventually, Hal agreed due to his rising interest in how viewers perceive the roosters. This interest changed his PhD from snake personality differences to analysing the psychology of humans involved in cockfighting. Following the completion of his PhD, Hal flew to Vancouver, Canada to attend an international theology conference. Whilst at the airport Hal read ‘Animal Liberation' by Peter Singer. Hal describes initially dismissing Peter's perception of animal rights but continued to read due to Peter's arguments being good. Originally, Hal perceived that Peter did not incorporate psychology, believing that logical arguments would not affect humans' treatment of animals. Now, Hal admits the whole book was effective at pulling the heartstrings. Hal then discussed his initial PhD study, working at Gordon Burghardt's laboratory at the University of Tennessee. The aim was to develop a personality test for baby snakes. This test involved waving his hand in front of the snake to count how many times the snake struck within two minutes. The study demonstrated that siblings from the same litter behaved similarly, with recently fed snakes acting more aggressively as being fully limited their capacity to escape. Hal defines biological psychology as how biology and evolution impact human behaviour. Hal highlights this term brings about questions regarding what it means to be human. He then goes on to discuss the controversial topic of human attachment to their pets. On one side, biophilia, whereby humans have an innate trait to love all animals. Hal disagrees with this but instead believes animal attachment relates to cultural learning. He noted that the term pet is westernised, referencing a study by Peter Gray which examines 60 human cultures. This study concluded that only five cultures played with their pets. The other cultures used them for work. Hal then explained that in nature, pet-keeping is limited, referencing one occasion where a chimpanzee plays with a bush baby, usually resulting in killing it. Consequently, Hal describes pet-keeping as the thing that separates us from other species. Hal then discusses the impact of pets on human health. Historically, Erica Friedman in the 1980s concluded that pets increase their owner survival rate following a heart attack by four times more than those who do not own a pet. However, as Hal wrote his book, he discovered that there was an equal amount of papers stating that pets have a negative impact, no impact and a positive impact on the physical and mental health of their owners. This means no solid conclusion can be derived. In addition, Hal noted that research shows gender differences concerning human-animal interactions are limited. With the data he had, Hal developed an animal attitude scale. He highlighted on extreme ends in America, that females are more likely to be animal activists (people who alter their life to help animals e.g., diet, wardrobe etc.), whereas, males are more likely to be hunters. Hal then discusses the cultural impact of animal care, giving the veterinary profession as an example. Stating how 30 years ago, this career was considered a male role, with current roles now being 60% women. Hal then discusses behavioural alterations of animal activists in regards to animal care and their philosophical orientation. Hal then reviews how the animal welfare act is incorporated differently globally in terms of animal-based research. Hal considers history important, so shares with us the German Nazi parties progressive animal rights, restricting their use in research. On the other hand, the United States animal care and use committee covers all animals except rats, mice and birds. This means that the majority of animals used in research are not protected. Hal then elaborates on the animal popularity trends, giving dog breeds as an example. Utilising the 60 million dogs registered with the American Kennel Club from 1926, it was determined that cultural fashion trends greatly affects dog breed popularity as people unconsciously follow trends. Hal referenced the Dalmatians popularity boom following Disney's 101 Dalmations as an example. Hal progresses to discuss why some animals humans seem to care more about compared to others, referring frequently to a paper by Burghardt and Herzog Jr; Beyond Conspecifics: Is Brer Rabbit Our Brother? Here he observes how "cuteness" is a key factor in species with conservation programmes, although he noted this changes with cultural perceptions. For example, how the killer whale changed to an orca. Hal and Sabrina then discuss the recently published 2nd edition of his book; Some we love, some we hate, and some we eat. He wrote the book to be easily understood for the everyday person that aimed to get the public to question what they knew about animals. Hal was surprised by the book's popularity and incorporation into a lot of education courses. Hal concludes by sharing with us his free blog on Psychology Today that consists of over 150 blogs. The Rose of Versailles on Riyoko Ikedan pukudraamaklassikko, jossa käydään läpi kuningatar Marie-Antoinetten elämänvaiheet lapsuudesta Ranskan vallankumoukseen, ja tapahtumia seurataan naispuolisen mutta poikana kasvatetun aatelissotilas Oscarin silmin. --- Kommentoi | Twitter | Instagram --- - Fakku julkaisee Nana & Kaorun 03:56 – THE ROSE OF VERSAILLES: ESITTELY - The Rose of Versailles - Riyoko Ikeda - Showa 24 -mangakat, joista puhuimme ajankohtaisosiossa jaksossa 52 07:11 – THE ROSE OF VERSAILLES: HISTORIA JA MERKITYS - Robespierre - Jopa Oscarin isä oli oikea historiallinen henkilö - Song of the Wind and Trees - Asama-Sansoon tapaus - Kageki Shojo!! Covers all 10 volumes plus the 10th anniversary side stories of The Rose of Versailles by Riyoko Ikeda (that's the five omnibus volumes released by Udon!)It's hard to overstate how significant The Rose of Versailles is to the history of shojo manga and beyond. In this episode about Riyoko Ikeda's masterpiece, Erica Friedman, the editor of the English edition of the series, details the legacy of Oscar François de Jarjayes, the ultimate girl prince. Erica answers listener questions about the localization, plus she and Ashley dive into the series' queerness (despite not being about gender or sexuality), how historically accurate it is to the events of the French Revolution (immensely), and much more. We hope you're as delighted as we are to finally be able to read this iconic series legally, in gorgeous English editions.REFERENCESThe Rose of Versailles manga is available physically in omnibuses from Udon EntertainmentThe Rose of Versailles anime is available from Discotek. On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum bring on yuri scholar and founder of Okazu, Erica Friedman, to discuss My Solo Exchange Diary! A two volume autobiographical manga from Nagata Kabi that is also a follow up to her previously released My Lesbian Experiece With Loneliness, which we also covered on the podcast back in 2017! We have a very open discussion about how the success of Kabi's works in the west have made it possible for other autobiographical manga to be picked up, as well as how that success has contributed to Kabi's life and work both positively and negatively. This discussion was originally posted exclusively on our Patreon a year ago, which we decided to make available publicly not only to give listeners a peek at what we have to offer for potential patrons, but to also celebrate the release of Nagata Kabi's latest work, My Alcoholic Escape From Reality, of which we will also be releasing a podcast about on our Patreon at the end of this month! So if you enjoyed this discussion, be sure sign up soon to listen to it when its out! Until then, enjoy the episode! Hearing stories from other students can inspire others to do their own advocacy. Campuses working together can also expand the impact students have when it comes to their work fighting food insecurity. Today, we talked to Erica Friedman.
FIU departments and students have been working towards creating a union and a space for all of our LGBTQIA+ students to feel safe! The Pride Student Union is still in it's formation stages but we need leaders like YOU to keep pushing for change! Executive board applications are open until March 10th! In this episode we talk to Moon Medina, Ti Ti Nguyen, and Erica Friedman about the origins of the PSU, the importance of creating this space for students, where we want to see the PSU go, and MORE!Contact momedina@fiu.edu with your panther ID and information to attend an info session!Follow @fiulgbtqa on Instagram for more updates!
Just when you thought you polished off the last of your Thanksgiving leftovers, LGBThanksgiving concludes with one last juicy podcast stuffed full of queer manga goodness! Hope you’re hungry, because this is a big one - our retrospective of the defining yuri manga of the 2010’s, Kase-san! We couldn’t digest a series this savory by ourselves, so we invited on some yuri connoisseurs to help us devour all the gay girly goodness - TomoChoco hosts Kit and Sarah and returning guest Erica Friedman, founder of Okazu and Yuricon! Together we feast on the wonderful bounty of yuri loveliness Kase-san provides, including its resilient publication history, the sweet relationship of its central couple, its mature exploration of their libidos, how it boldly graduates them from high school to college, and so much more! Though, we also go on many tangents too, discussing an assortment of sorta related things like how much better Tokyo’s transit is compared to New York’s, the best anime to watch at the gym, dubs vs. subs, and other random things! But we mostly keep it on track to talk about Kase, and everything we love about this trailblazing, decade-spanning yuri staple! And with all that said, this podcast brings us to the end of LGBThanksgiving! I apologize for the delay on this last installment - I didn’t mean for it to release this half-way into December instead of the end of November, but like I said last time, sometimes it’s good to let Thanksgiving bleed into Christmas rather than the other way around for once. But I want to give my big hearty thanks to all our wonderful guests these past few episodes - Jocelyne Allen, Anne Ishii, Jax Cottrell, Kit, Sarah, and Erica - and a big thank you to all our listeners for enjoying our conversations with them! We definitely plan to cover a lot more queer manga on the show next year, so look forward to having another gay old time with us on more queer occaisions in the future! Ajankohtaisaiheina puhumme Super HxErosin tekijä Ryooma Kitadan postauksesta mangantekijöiden tulorakenteesta sekä siitä, miten mangaka Bunny Urasawa painostettiin kertomaan näkövammastaan, kun hänen näkövammateemaista sarjaansa kritisoitiin epäuskottavaksi. I have a problem with the way we talk about problematic media. Or, more accurately, the way we don’t talk about problematic media. We’ve had a lot of conversations recently about problematic content in series we like and don’t like, and it’s a topic we’ve seen debated time and again whenever a series or creator does something questionable, uncomfortable, or in some cases, criminal. While it’s difficult to reconcile enjoying something that may be doing something “bad” or was created by a creator who has done something “bad,” I think it’s important to interrogate problematic content in the media we consume to identify the ways in which it may affect real people in harmful or damaging ways, and whether supporting such works emboldens the cultural pervasiveness of this content and their creators. This is a complicated topic that can be approached from many perspectives, so we invited several people who have expertise in holding conversations about problematic media and discussing the ways in which it reflects upon our culture and affects people. We’re delighted to have back on the show Erica Friedman, the premier yuri scholar, historian, and founder of Yuricon and Okazu, and are excited to invite on some new guests - Ash from the Youtube Channel The King’s Speech, and The Black Manga Critic from the Youtube Channel of the same name. Together we explored our thoughts on problematic content in media, and how to hold helpful and productive discussions of them in ways that encourage cultural change. Huh, who would have thought you could have a civil conversation about problematic media on the internet? On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Lum & Colton are joined by dakazu, darfox and Morgana from the Manga Machinations podcast to talk about Paru Itagaki's Beastars! Even only after reading the first two volumes released by Viz Media, we have a lot to dig into as we discuss different interesting facets of the world of Beastars, as well as its many various kinds of social commentary that we may or may not be able to relate to different real world experiences. We also give our first impressions of the anime based on the trailers (this was recorded before the anime made its premiere on Japanese TV) and wonder how well Itagaki's may or may not work in the transition from comic to animation. This week on TomoChoco, Kit and Sarah sit down with yuri expert Erica Friedman to discuss yuri's past, present, and future! Erica Friedman: @okazuyuri on Twitter, okazu.yuricon.com Music: Wander by Nokae
2019 marks the centennial anniversary of the Yuri genre, celebrating 100 years of girls in love challenging the expectations placed upon them by patriarchal definitions of love and gender. To commemorate the legacy of the genre and the stories that’ve been told, we interviewed Erica Friedman, a Yuri historian and tastemaker who has been at the center of the fandom for over two decades. Erica is the founder of Yuricon, an organization dedicated to uniting the community through fan events and scholarship, and has written extensively on Yuri on her blog Okazu, which has reached its 4000th post after over 16 years! Erica’s planning an incredible number of events to celebrate 100 Years of Yuri with the community, including numerous convention appearances and a Yuri pilgrimage in Japan in the fall, all leading up to the release of her comprehensive book on Yuri set to come out in 2020! We chat with Erica about the work she’s done growing a proactive community around Yuri, the history of the genre and its fan culture, the influence of digital comics in helping newer creators and more untraditional stories to get published, and how we’ve reached a point where these stories can be spread more widely thanks to the efforts of trailblazers who fought to create a space for those who came after them to work in and expand. Like the pun in Okazu’s namesake, we hope our interview serves as an appetizer before you enjoy the full buffet of information out there about yuri and the works themselves! Our conversation with Erica is the first of an entire month of interviews with manga industry professionals about their work and fandom. Up next will be our interview with Joey Weiser, the award-winning comic book artist and creator of the Mermin series, who joins us to discuss his new book Ghost Hog (available NOW!) and the influence that manga and japanese culture have had on his work. We’ll be releasing the interview this coming Friday, but you can listen to the episode early by becoming a $2 Patron on our Patreon! We’re also offering a ton of other content to our Patrons, including a monthly Patron Bonus Pod, Show Notes, Bloopers, Unreleased Podcasts and more! Every dollar donated to our Patreon is paid forward to making the show self-sufficient and fund future projects, so if you want to see us attempt more ambitious podcasts your support would be a great help and greatly appreciated! What has a history over a hundred years-old, goes beyond genre, and gets its name from the Japanese word for 'lily'? If you guessed yuri, you and our guest would be in good company! This week, we had special guest Erica Friedman to help us wrap up the season and educate us on the fascinating world of yuri... for the revolution of the world?! Next week, it's season eight; what changes will we have in store?! One thing that won't change is that we'll have a new episode, this time with Justus R Stone talking about fans of light novels! ## Where can I learn more about Erica Friedman? If you want to learn more about Erica Friedman's fantastic work on yuri, you're in luck! - The Yuri New Network (now with podcast!): [okazu.yuricon.com](https://okazu.yuricon.com) - YuriCon: [yuricon.com](https://yuricon.com) - Facebook: [@yuriconalc](https://facebook.com/yuriconalc) - Twitter: [@okazuyuri](https://twitter.com/okazuyuri) And, you can help support the continuation of that work by becoming a patron of her work on Patreon: http://patreon.com/okazu ## Episode outline ### Fandom Facts **History and Origins:** Yuri, or Girls' Love, is a genre of manga, anime, and other Japanese works involving lesbian relationships. It can focus on the romantic or sexual aspects of the relationships (or both). The word itself literally means 'lily', a common Japanese feminine name, and may be derived in parallel to the pre-existing association between the word for rose ('bara') and gay men. ...And of course there's a lot of history, which is why we have Erica to help us out! **Search Data:** Interest in Yuri has been [relatively constant since 2004 with some slow growth](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=%2Fm%2F0jb0t,%2Fm%2F0f9s9). Most spikes in interest appear to be erroneously associated with the genre: a spike in December 2016 most likely corresponds to the finale of _Yuri!!! on Ice_, for example, as does a spike in August 2011 referring to cosmonaut _Yuri Gagarin_. A quick comparison to Yaoi puts Yuri as just under half as popular but with similar trends. In terms of search data by country, the top ten are: Japan, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, South Korea, Cambodia, Phillipines, Malaysia, and El Salvador (Canada is 30th, and United States is 32nd). **Fan Demographics:** Based on a fan survey conducted by [Floating into Bliss in 2017](https://floatingintobliss.wordpress.com/2017/10/14/report-on-the-yuri-fandom-demographic-survey/), we do have some rough data from its almost 700 respondents. - Gender: A plurality identified as women (47.19%), but fairly equal representation of those identifying as men (44.31%) with the remainder identifying as non-binary / other. - Sexuality: Of the women who responded, 96.04% listed their sexuality as something _other_ than heterosexual (compared to 23.38% of men) - Age: The mode age group is 21-25 (though, 16-20 and 26-30 are also fairly represented) Other neat facts from this survey include: - Most responses came from Twitter (and there was a higher proportion of responses from women than men on Twitter; a higher proportion of men responded from Reddit) - Most respondents prefer to read Yuri manga (55.39%) vs watching anime (16.97%) or visual novels (4.46%). 18.56% don't care about which medium. - The vast majority (84.9%) read both original and fan works - Over 80% enjoy shipping, and over 50% enjoy shipping but don't see it as a key aspect of their enjoying Yuri. - Over 40% read both pornographic and non-pornographic content and have no preference for which The survey also lists favourite manga by groups... so I would highly recommend checking out the survey! A slightly different survey from the [International Anime Research Project](https://sites.google.com/site/animeresearch/past-results/2016-results) also happened to ask about interest levels in Yuri (and other genres). Of the 300+ respondents (~54% identifying as male), approximately 25% listed Yuri as "Do not like" with approximately 12% identifying as "Very much like" and another 12% as "I don't know" (the remainder being evenly divided between the 5 other rankings). Last Episode's Famous Last Words Z Is there a Japanese version of Tanya Chalkin's "the Kiss"? G Who is Yuri for? T What is the first canonical Yuri manga? Tyler What is the primary focus of Yuri (since Yaoi seems to be focussed on the seme / uke relationship)? This week's spotlight Yaoi / Yuri North > Yaoi / Yuri North is the annual LGBTQ-centric programming track that runs as part of Anime North. Programming features a variety of informative panels and events including fandom-specific discussions, queer lifestyle, and yaoi/yuri fandom topics as well as evening / overnight viewings and a multitude of contests. YuriCon > Yuricon was founded in 2000 by Erica Friedman as AniLesboCon, with the mission of bringing together fans of lesbian images in Japanese animation and comics. Initially, ALC was designed to be a “virtual” convention only, with real contests to foster community and creativity. This mission gathered people from all over the world; to discuss and create stories that represented an entire continuum of lesbian experience, from youthful crushes to adult relationships. Race Against Time IV > Now in its fourth year running, the Race Against Time is an annual charity marathon to raise money for the Alzheimer Society of Canada by beating the SNES classic, Chrono Trigger, as many times as possible in 24 hours. This year, the event is running every week until August 11 and 12 for the main event (see website for detailed schedule). > > Alzheimer's is a terrible disease that slowly robs those afflicted of their memories, and, eventually, their very sense of being. We are racing to help preserve those memories of loved ones and for a cure to stop it once and for all! > > All donations go directly to the Alzheimer Society of Canada. Famous Last Words This week's famous last words around next week's fandom, Light Novels! Erica What do you think are the qualities of light novels as a genre that makes them so interesting as reader and reviewer of light novels? (Thoughts about genre as a whole, and personal interpretation of why you like them) G Why light novel? Why are they called light novels? T Why have they become so popular in North America? Z Is there a magic ratio of pictures to text for it to be a light novel? Where can you find us online? We are everywhere! Most notably though, we like to hang out in a few places on social media: If you want to be part of our podcast (or just want to check us out), we record our podcast LIVE on twitch.tv every Monday at 20:00 Eastern Time! For all the latest updates, check us out on Facebook or Twitter To see the latest hijinx from our conventions or even our daily lives and adventures, check us out on Instagram For our latest convention updates, Let's Plays, and other in-real-life video, check out our YouTube channel We're also on iTunes, and Google Play, and would love it if you could leave a review and rating! if you want to reach us, and for some reason none of those work for you, try nick@thenickscast.com You can check out our website; that will mostly bring you back to this stuff. Everything is thenickscast, so if you can't find us, go on your social network and search for that! What is "Fanthropological"? How did you read this far without asking this question?! Fanthropological is an anthropological (ish) podcast where we bring the fan's-eye view to you! Each week, we take a look at a different fandom, dig up interesting background, trivia, and history, and try to get to why it is that people are a fan. We also try to highlight good causes related to that fandom, and find interesting things that fans have created to share those to the world. Each episode is about an hour. Ish. Who is "The Nickscast"? We are the Nickscast! Three products of late-80s / early-90s pop culture who love exploring fandom and everything geek ... who also happen to have been best buddies since high school, and all happen to be named Nick. Yes, we are super creative (dare we say, the most creative). Ahem We are Nick Green, Nick Terwoord, and Nick Zacharewicz: We started the Nickscast as a labour of love, and as a place to entertain and to discuss our love of fans and fandom, and all that is shiny and interesting in that realm. It's what lead us to start our first podcast, our satellite podcasts, Fanthropological, and so much more. We want to help others learn more about different fandoms, and to create empathy with other fans: We dream of a world where other fans aren't "those Weird-o's", but just folks with different tastes. A world where fandom is full of discourse and analysis, and there are plenty of tools and resources to help. Fans building communities to do good in the world. Because everyone's a fan. Thanks Special thanks to Erica Friedman, who despite losing her voice the day of recording managed to tough it out and help us learn a lot more about the world of yuri! Of the 300+ respondents (~54% identifying as ma
