Whether or not Einstein said it, the principle behind it is incredibly powerful. By making small, consistent improvements—just like compounding interest—you can see exponential growth in almost any area of life.Compounding Interest and 1% Daily ImprovementIf you improve by just 1% every day, that adds up much faster than most people expect. Over the course of a year, those 1% gains can compound into something like 37 times better performance. While this example simplifies things a bit, the principle of compounding is key here. It's about getting a little better each day and letting those gains multiply over time.Pareto Principle (80/20 Rule)Sanni, Anthony. The 80/20 Way to Productivity: Do More by Doing Less. In this week's episode, we had the pleasure of hosting a group of students who shared their competition experiences with us. Joining us were Middle School students Ava, Harry, Jeff, and Jonathan, along with High School students Isabela and Masaaki. They have discussed various competitive activities, including math, writing, and coding, offering valuable insights into their preparation strategies, lessons learned, and advice for peers seeking to enhance their participation in these events. Jeff, an eighth-grade student, highlighted the support he received from his teachers at WAB, which inspired him to participate in a prestigious writing competition in the UK. Grade 7 student Ava, who recently returned from Yale after participating in the World Scholars' Cup, shared her experience of conquering the challenges of individual research and task breakdown as effective problem-solving techniques. High School student Masaaki recounted his experience in a group maths competition known as ARML, where he discovered the benefits of collaborative problem-solving. He encouraged students to step out of their comfort zone and explore competitions beyond their familiar subjects. Masaaki found participating in a coding competition for the first time both challenging and enriching. When discussing preparation for different contests, Grade 9 student Jonathan, and Grade 11 student Isabel both emphasized the importance of understanding the unique formats and requirements of each competition. Isabel added that some contests test existing knowledge, presenting a multitude of questions to be completed within a limited timeframe, while others provide more time for problem-solving and knowledge development. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our Middle and High School students for their insightful and engaging discussion. For more inspiring learning stories at WAB, don't miss out on this episode.

Masaaki Suzuki is internationally renowned as an expert in choral music and an accomplished organist, harpsichordist and conductor. The founder and artistic director of Bach Collegium Japan, he has recorded the entirety of Bach's choral works, plus his concertos, orchestral suites, and solo works for harpsichord. His expertise extends well beyond Bach, having conducted repertoire as diverse as Britten, Beethoven, Mahler and Mendelssohn, but it's Mozart that brings him to Australia as he conducts the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, joined by the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, for Mozart's Great Mass in C Minor, June 7-10, at the Sydney Opera House. In this conversation, Masaaki talks with great passion about the importance of Bach as a foundation stone to the composers who follow, shares some memorable tales from his earlier years, and introduces some of the vast number of recordings of Bach Collegium Japan.

At the Karlovy Vary Inernational Film Festival, I interviewed Japanese director Masaaki Kudo about his forthcoming film A Far Shore. Raw, visceral, and unapologetic about its bleak subject matter—the film explores what it is to be broken by a cruel world—which, in this case, is the seedy underbelly of Okinawa. Drawing on Francois Truffaut and Ken Loach, Masaaki delivers a third feature film that captivates, enchants, and disgusts. This interview was conducted with the help of a translator. To preserve authenticity, I include both the Japanese and the English.
Buon ascolto!

As the name itself implies, The Rape of Nanking is no light subject. It is one of many of Japan's extended list of war crimes committed by commanders and their troops during World War II. Throughout the seven-week pillaging of what was once Nanking, an estimate of 20,000 to 80,000 Chinese women raped and forced into a life of prostitution as “comfort women”, and 50,000 to 300,000 Chinese civilians were brutalized and savagely murdered. Despite the fact that the massacre was carried out by the Japanese, the Chinese government could partially be blamed as well, due to the Nationalist leader, Chiang Kai-Shek's inadequate handling of the event, and Communist leader Mao Zedong's following coverup. The Rape of Nanking has been a topic of debate for historians in the past few decades as no one can seem to pinpoint the exact amount of people decimated, the extent of the acts committed by the Japanese Imperial Army, and whether it was comparable to the Holocaust.

Dave Beck speaks with guest conductor Masaaki Suzuki. Together with his son, Masato Suzuki, Masaaki has created a performing version of Mozart’s very last composition, the famously unfinished Requiem Mass. The piece was written by Mozart on his deathbed and it was left to his students and others to complete the work. Masaaki Suzuki leads the SSO, Seattle Symphony Chorale and vocal soloists in Benaroya Hall this week in an edition of the Requiem that the Suzukis put together from fragments of the music Mozart left behind. All three of the works on the program this week explore topics of mourning and loss. There are also works by Toru Takemitsu and Karl Amadeus Hartmann on the program.

For this episode I was joined by my good friends Joy Von Spain and Masaaki Masao. They are the duo that comprises the death industrial project To End It All, and as if that didn't keep them busy enough, they are in Eye of Nix as well. These two are two of my favorite performers and I have been blessed to see them, and share the stage with them many times. I was able to catch up with them when they came down from Seattle to play a special invite only show at Azoth here in Portland. Listen in as we discuss hip hop, drum n bass, Weird Al and take a couple listener suggestions. -------------------- "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli. Meet Masaaki, a designer, artist, consultant - and expert on creativity!Unleash your own creative potentialIn this podcast episode, we talk about the importance of education and empowerment of individuals so they can unleash the potential they already have inside of them.Masaaki believes that everyone is creative and that each of us can use their own creativity to create something great. As author of several books about creativity, he never had a background in practcing arts himself - until someone challenged him to do so. Only two years ago, he decided to demonstrate, that anyone can become an artist, and has been extremely successful with it since. His calligraphy paintings have been featured in more than 10 exhibitions in the past year, and has already been honoured as the global ambassador of the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy. (Copyright to: Masaaki Hasegawa, www.masaakih.com)What role do you play in society? It's important we all reflect on the different roles each of us play in society, and what the impact is that you leave behind - does it make you happy and reflect your values? Masaaki reminds us that the roles are not given or fixed, and up to us to modify in the way that truly represents the change we want to see. Masaaki himself sees that his role in society, no matter if related to art, design or education is always about empowering others to see their potential, recognise their role and and make a positive difference.Sustainability as force for innovationHe believes that sustainability allows us to higher our perspective and make new connections that we otherwise would not have seen. It is a way to innovate, find new approaches and create progress. Like this, sustainability can make us more successful both personally and professionally.Sustainability is something that can accompany you in the longer time and get rid of short-term, narrow-minded thinking. It helps us to be aware of the things in our "blind spot" and see beyond what we are used to.Create your own happinessLastly, we speak about the moment when what you think, say and do are in harmony: happiness. Masaaki shares how he believes we all can lead a happier life, and share that happiness with those around us. We already have everything it takes to be happy and creative inside of us, so let's live fully, love and do what we believe in, we only have one life after all!
