The train is finally leaving the station on today's episode of Anime Was (Not) A Mistake. Originally released in 2020, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Movie: Mugen Train gave the world some much-needed anime goodness and set multiple box office records. The film focuses on Tanjiro and his friends joining Kyojuro Rengoku, the Flame Hashira, to investigate the strange disappearances that have been happening on the Mugen Train. The Demon Slayers are given a one-way ticket into their dreams courtesy of the villainous Enmu. As the only remaining Lower Rank demon of the Twelve Kizuki, Enmu is determined to consume everyone on board in order to grow stronger. Our heroes must find a way to come back to reality and stop Enmu dead in his tracks. But even if they succeed, a much darker threat is looming just over the horizon... Full of spoilers. It's episodes like this when all pretense is forfeit and it becomes clear that our sole desire is to yell about anime. #couplegoals This movie is streaming on Funimation both subbed and dubbed, though if you watch the latter I fear for your soul. Do NOT rent it on Vudu for $15 like we did initially, because Vudu has this fun feature where you can't change the audio language so you'll be forced to watch it dubbed into English. Content Warning: A lot of stylized anime violence, mostly due to swords and stabbing. There is a lot of blood, death, and some images of bloody corpses of a family. A character is shown at the point of cutting off their own head with a sword multiple times in order to escape a dream state.
This weeks episode brings our much awaited review of Demon Slayer-Kimetsu no Yaiba-the Movie: Mugen Train and now that we all have access to it via Funimation, we thought it would be worthwhile to review it since it shattered every box office record known to man. We've also got some more Olympic news and a couple more first impressions based on premieres from this week. And we're dusting off the old Isekai Roundup and giving you a best to worst of the whopping 8 Isekai titles out this season. There are a lot of them and as you might expect, they aren't all winners so if you're a fan of the genre this episode will help you separate the sheep from the goats. American and Japanese animation is known around the world, but how are other countries telling their own stories through animation? The animation industry is growing in India and Ghana, allowing for new perspectives and styles to reach a global audience. We speak to Sharad Devarajan, producer for the Indian animated TV series The Legend of Hanuman, and Cycil Jones Abban, the director of Ghanaian animated film 28th the Crossroads, about representation and upcoming trends and challenges. When Latvian director Ilze Burkovska-Jacobsen was seven, she discovered what she thought were the bones of a World War II soldier in her sandbox. In her animated documentary My Favourite War, Ilze remembers a childhood living under the Soviet regime of the 1970s, where she was forbidden to discuss difficult aspects of the past. She tells us about the lasting trauma of living through that time and the healing power of animation. Can animation be a tool for activism? Over recent months in Poland, demonstrators have taken to the streets protesting against a new ruling which makes nearly all forms of abortion illegal in the country. Students from Łódź Film School decided to create a piece of protest animation against the ban. We hear from artist Weronika Szyma, who co-organised the short film Polish Women's Resistance.
