This month on OUT and About, Iese Wilson sits down with Icaro Paraguassú, who shares his experiences as a gay Latter-Day Saint from Brazil. They discuss faith, identity, diversity, and the need for resources that reach every language and culture.Icaro reflects on the rainbow as both a symbol of LGBTQ+ pride and a covenant with God, and how we each reflect the light of Christ in our own way. His rainbow pin opens conversations and offers quiet reassurance to those seeking belonging. From a mission in Argentina to a leadership academy in the Czech Republic, Icaro's story is a reminder that while our paths may differ, we're all journeying back to the same heavenly home.
This recording captures the early morning sounds of an ancient Waorani warrior in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Staying with him in his traditional palm-thatched longhouse, the tranquility of the environment was profound, with minimal external noise. Despite a language barrier—he spoke only Waorani (Sabela)—we connected through gestures and shared moments. At dawn, as we emerged from our hammocks, I asked if I could record him. The resulting sounds offer a glimpse into a way of life that has remained largely unchanged for centuries, providing a powerful auditory link to the past. Recorded in the Amazon rainforest, Ecuador by Rafael Diogo.

Sondra Witt Burch, age 88, passed away peacefully Saturday, December 7, 2024. The day prior had been a day of love, laughter, and tears, surrounded by her loving family. Following a private family burial, a celebration of Sondra's life is scheduled for Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at 2:00PM at Meadowbrook Baptist Church in Robinson, Texas with visitation for family and friends immediately following the service. Sondra was born in Waco, Texas on March 27, 1936, to George Cleveland, Sr., and Virginia Craven Witt. She was a lifelong Waco resident and loved her community. She often reminisced about her family home on Washington Ave and the many mischievous escapades she and her brother Cleveland would get into as children and teens. As a young girl, Sondra and her mother Virginia knitted sweaters for WWII soldiers and entertained local soldiers from the USO by playing piano and organ duets and serving food in their home. During the Waco tornado of 1953, Sondra was having her senior portraits made at the studio of Jimmy Willis. These proofs were found 30 years later by Mr. Willis and personally delivered to the then Sondra Burch. Sondra attended Waco High School where she fell in love with her high school sweetheart, Jackson Bryce Burch and they married June 4, 1955. Sondra and Jack shared 53 wonderful years until Jack's passing in 2008. As newlyweds, Jack served his country in the USAF. While stationed in Germany, Sondra's fondest memories were being a member of the Officer's Wives Club and the birth of her firstborn son, Bryce. Sondra continued her love of service to others by helping organize projects to aid refugees during the Hungarian Revolution. Upon returning to the states, Treacy and Ben arrived six years apart to the day, completing their family. She managed to raise three lively boys while maintaining poise, grace, and style. She was known to bring orange juice or lemonade out to the waste management collectors on occasion! Sondra was proud of her heritage and the Waco community. She served on numerous placements through Junior League of Waco. Service was her gift, and she spent countless hours on local committees and Boards of Director including Waco Cotton Palace, United Way, Hedonia Club, Red Cross, Hillcrest Baptist Hospital Auxiliary, Providence Park Auxiliary, and many more. She coordinated blood drives, created Adopt A Grandparent programs and Adopt A School programs, and organized volunteer services and training through many local agencies. Even in her career choices, Sondra chose areas of service. After 25 years of serving as Director of Volunteer Services for Hillcrest Baptist Hospital she retired in 1997. She didn't stay retired long and subsequently served as Director of Volunteer Services for Family Abuse Center, Director of Volunteer Services for United Way, Director of Human Resources for Brazos Psychiatric Hospital, and Director of Volunteer Services and Community Relations for Christus Regis St. Elizabeth. Jack and Sondra prioritized family and Sunday lunch was expected at the Burch household. Some of the family's most treasured memories are those Sunday lunches, and family vacations to Colorado, Mo Ranch, and grandchildren only trips to New York. Sondra wanted her children and grandchildren to see and experience the world and all that life has to offer. She valued creating memories with each one of them and enjoyed “breaking a few rules” for the sake of fun! Colton and Tanner were introduced to the fine skill and technique of “wrapping” houses in Castle Heights along with Friday night sleepovers and non-parent approved movies at Honey and Papa's. Lottie, Amber, and Braxton were immersed in all thing's “girly” such as dolls, tea parties and pretty dresses. She wanted her children and grandchildren to know that life's rewards come first and foremost from a relationship with Jesus, a good work ethic, and treating people with kindness, love, and respect. Following the devastating loss of her husband Jack and two of her sons, Treacy and Bryce, Sondra found love again with Ross Sams Jr. They were married on March 16, 2010. She often called Ross her Knight in Shining Armor. She and Ross loved to travel when their health permitted. When they were no longer able, they reminisced about the adventures they shared together and “planned” many trips that we all knew would never be taken. Sondra was an avid Lady Bears Basketball and Baylor Football fan, a Dallas Mavericks fan, and she grew to love Texas Longhorn Football, Ross's alma mater. Sondra and Ross both suffered the devastating effects of cognitive impairment (dementia) in their later years. As their respective impairments advanced and health declined, it became necessary for Sondra to move to an environment with caregivers who could provide compassionate, empathic, and loving care, as this could not be provided in her home. She spent her final years at Arbor House where she was known as their very own “Georgia Peach”! Sondra flourished under their loving and specialized care and the staff quickly became family. She loved each one of them and we cannot thank them enough for taking care of “Honey.” Sondra expressed her unwavering love for Ross until her death. As with Sondra, we take great comfort knowing that when Ross entered heaven, his body was healed, his mind was restored, and all truths revealed. We know that they loved each other dearly. Sondra was a true “Southern Lady,” full of class and character. She was often compared to the late Audrey Hepburn who spoke the following words… “The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It's the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows, and the beauty of a woman only grows with passing years.” Sondra often exhibited this beauty in her kindness to others. She was the perfect hostess and became Pen Pals with many of the children of her close friends while they were away at college or in the military. She had a most giving heart and a beautiful soul. Sondra is preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands, Jackson Bryce Burch Sr., and Ross Martin Sams Jr.; two sons, Treacy Andrew Burch, and Jackson Bryce Burch Jr; and brother and sister-in-law, George Cleveland, Jr., and Martha Witt. Sondra is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ben and Genie Burch; daughter-in-law, Tracy Burch Thompson and husband Darrell; sister-in-law, Catherine Burch Bass; grandchildren, Lottie Bullock and husband BJ, Amber Araiza and husband Icaro, Colton Burch and wife Meighann, Tanner Burch, and Braxton Burch; 6 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; as well as her lifelong friends Betty Williams, Margie Allen, and Pat Dicorte. Sondra's grandchildren and their spouses will serve as honorary pallbearers. At Sondra's request, memorials may be made in her memory to, Meadowbrook Baptist Church Youth and Children's Ministry Camp Scholarship Fund. The following Ralph Waldo Emerson quote was found written in Sondra's handwriting. “To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition, to know even one life has breathed easier because you lived…This is to have succeeded.” Honey, you have succeeded! Till we meet again… Celebration Services and visitation are pending at this time. Please check back for updated information.Sondra's family invites you to leave a message or memory on her "Tribute Wall" at www.WHBfamily.com.

"The plants are always turning everything upside down because our culture is upside down." -- Mee Ok Icaro EPISODE SUMMARY: In this episode of Unraveling Adoption, I, Beth Syverson, welcome back Mee Ok Icaro, a previous guest who has shared her profound insights on adoption and healing through plant medicine. This episode is particularly special as we recorded as we prepared for an ayahuasca retreat in Costa Rica, where I participated in my first ceremony under Mee Ok's guidance. We begin by discussing our feelings as the retreat approaches. I express my excitement mixed with a hint of fear, acknowledging that this experience is far outside my comfort zone. Mee Ok shares her own anticipation and the unique challenges of leading a retreat for the first time, emphasizing the importance of focusing on personal healing rather than taking on the burdens of others. Mee Ok elaborates on the concept of leadership in the context of plant medicine, contrasting it with traditional views. She explains that true leadership often involves humility and a willingness to learn from others, rather than a desire for power or control. This perspective shifts the narrative around what it means to guide others in their healing journeys. As we delve deeper into the preparations for the retreat, we discuss the rigorous dieta we have both been following. This dieta involves strict dietary and behavioral restrictions designed to prepare our bodies and minds for the transformative experience ahead. I share my struggles with giving up my phone and certain foods items and the impact of reducing external stimuli on my mental clarity and emotional well-being. Mee Ok and I also touch on the broader implications of accessibility to plant medicine, particularly for marginalized communities. We discuss the challenges faced by individuals from lower-income backgrounds in accessing these healing modalities and the need for a more equitable approach as psychedelics become more mainstream. Throughout the episode, we reflect on the importance of integration and preparation in the healing process. I share my personal journey with ketamine treatment and how it has helped me move away from antidepressants, highlighting the significance of active engagement in one's healing journey rather than passively relying on substances. As we conclude, we express our excitement for the upcoming retreat and the potential for profound transformation. We plan to record a follow-up episode after the retreat to share our experiences and insights gained during this journey. Join us as we explore the complexities of adoption, healing, and the transformative power of plant medicine in this thought-provoking episode. ===============

I met this incredible woman over a decade ago (ep 87), when she was in a very difficult spot, suffering from constant pain, unable to move or care for herself. She was preparing to die. In the years since, I've seen the light in her grow stronger and stronger. She's recovered from severe scleroderma, written a book about her journey, been profiled on a Netflix series, featured in Gabor Maté's NYT bestseller The Myth of Normal, and continuously explored her inner world with the help of sacred plants (ayahuasca) and other modalities. Her initiation into the world of healing by way of her own near death experience is as authentically “shamanic” as anything I'm aware of in the modern world. You can learn more about the retreat she's leading in Costa Rica here. This video of Mee Ok and Gabor Mate will give you a sense of the incredible journey my friend is taking. Welcome back to the Psychedelic Therapy Podcast. I'm your host, Eamon Armstrong. Today on the show, we're welcoming back Tony Moss. Tony is an artist, producer, and member of the Bird Tribe Music Collective. He is also an ayahuasca facilitator with 30 years of experience and has just released a new album, Joy. In today's conversation, we discuss the magic and science of medicine music. We talk about the state of medicine work in 2024, why psychedelics change the way we hear music, and the difference between an Icaro, a medicine song, and other genres. We also explore the hymns of Santa Daime, Tony's gospel-inspired music, and his new album, Joy, which turns unexpected genres into medicine music. Do you struggle with your desperate parts? Do you yearn to feel whole? Listen in as Mee Ok shares her learnings on healing body, mind and soul. A particularly dramatic episode - she was given just 5 years to live.Born in Korea, Mee Ok Icaro (pronounced “mēˈōk i'kä'rō”) was renamed “Mandy” by her white, evangelical parents who adopted and raised her in California and Arkansas. After narrowly escaping conversion therapy but unable to avoid sitting next to Sarah Huckabee Sanders in Spanish class, she attended Boston University to study philosophy and the classics, but ended up majoring in partying, sleep, and girls. Ten years later she graduated and worked at Harvard as a research assistant in an office next to Timothy Leary's old digs, while taking courses in history, film, medicine, literature, and German. After being diagnosed with scleroderma and given five years to live, Mee Ok was bedridden for three years until she began drinking ayahuasca, a shamanic brew from the Amazonian jungle, which gave her back her legs. She eventually obtained her MFA in Creative Writing, studying poetry, prose, and drama. Since then, she has been writing, pursuing the path of earth medicines, and trying to become the person she was meant to be.https://www.facebook.com/dasmeeokhttps://twitter.com/dasmeeokhttps://www.instagram.com/dasmeeokHoldingCompassionate.spaceMee-ok.com Guests and the host are not (unless mentioned) licensed pscyho-therapists and speak from their own opinion only. Paolo Repetto"Martini, Melotti. Sweet Marosa, you had me look at all the times I've been hurt, & sit with deep sadness, grief, loss, abandonment, boundary violations, disrespect & dishonorable treatment from others & broken heartedness. I've forgiven them & myself. I saw how & where my walls of protection were built & how to let them down, one by one. I now feel a full-bodied certainty of value in this world & feel available to experience & share my love in healthy ways. I feel a sense of deep belonging in this world & confidence in myself. My heart is mended, softened & has turned into a luminescent red rose. I see the beauty & power that resides within me & how it's always been there. Gracias Marosa for your medicine, the spirit of love. In this audio I am right next to Marosa in the jungle singing to her. You might hear the sounds of the Peruvian jungle in the background. (The Shamanic Dieta: Where does a shaman get their knowledge and ability to heal others? From the spirits of the plants. How do they get this? From a tradition called a Dieta. This is a practice that is necessary for one to become a plant doctor. It is a process that invites the spirit of a plant to merge with your body and spirit, work as an ally to teach, give power & knowledge to heal others. How is this done? Dieting a plant requires undergoing a level of suffering. It involves looking at the shadow & it involves fasting food for a certain amount of time, eating a simple bland diet & being removed from all stimulation so one can mediate & concentrate on the plant spirit, building a relationship with it. This Icaro was gifted to me by Marosa after dieting w her in Peru this October.)

I got to meet the spirit of Redwood this past July, AKA a shamanic dieta with Rojo Caspi (Redwood). Redwood's teachings and wisdom came through my dreams, through the whispers of nature, meditation and synchronicities during our communion together. I had dreams of my dog & sister dying which felt so real I cried for hours. I had visions during my meditations of red blood washing down a wall, symbolizing the red in redwood, blood, death & beauty in what can come from death. I pulled the death card 3x. Redwood said to me: "I am teaching you about life, death the cycle of life, & rebirth. I hold the maternal energy of the earth. I watch as things die, are reborn and how everything connects and comes together again over years and years of stillness. Everything comes together, and it will be ok. Open your heart and let the walls down. As you remember this you can stand firmly and sturdy though the years. Breathe and trust. Redwood said the path I am on will only get harder & that I have much to learn. It will be a lot to hold, but you can do it. You are not alone. Let the medicine in. The Magician is on intimate terms with death. Death always precedes rebirth and rebirth is your goal." Redwood gifted me this melody many weeks before this dieta, little did I know it was from Redwood. The melody came back and Icaro structure came together all at once during a meditation during the dieta. It made sense why it had to wait until now. I sang it in Ayahuasca ceremony the first time a couple days after. As soon as I started I could feel the room shift. Afterwards one of the passengers told me as he was purging during the Icaro, a space opened up in his heart which has been blocked for many years. Gracias Rojo Caspi for your medicine and thank you for letting me be a vessel for your medicine to come through.
Ayahuasca icaros, or ikaros, are traditional indigenous Amazonian songs that are performed as accompaniment to sacred plant healing ceremonies. They are musical prayers that embody the powers of spirits of plants and animals, deities, ancestors, and elemental forces. Channeled into this reality by Ayahuasca facilitators and Shamans, they are employed as efficient healing agents, powerful spirit weapons, or ineffable realm creators. Shamans learn icaros through years of training and communing with the plants, whose powers they are to use in healing or divinatory purposes. This training is commonly known as the ‘dieta,' During the ‘dieta,' shamans spend days & weeks in isolation from the community (but, not uncommonly, alongside other shamans in training), fasting on a basic diet which includes rice & plantains with no salt. They commune with the Master Plant once or a few times per day slowly gathering power, insight, and knowledge from the spirit world. Aside from food, they abstain from all other activities as well, leaving ample space for the Master Plant Teacher lessons to come through. Over the course of their training, future shamans slowly establish a strong connection with their plant teachers. As this resonance grows, the dreams, artistic inspiration and aptitude of the shaman diversify and develop as well. At some point, the apprentices are gifted with songs and chants, which they are to use for calling forth the lost souls and their spirit allies, and strengthening or modulating the actions of the plant spirits. I was gifted this haunting Icaro while I dieted an organic version of Agua De Florida. Florida Water is a mixture of several plants and has been used for centuries by healers for protection, cleansing and personal rituals. It is known as the Shaman's cleanse.
Ayahuasca forms the foundation of the indigenous plant medicine traditions of the Western Amazonian Shamanism, but the dieta plays a crucial role in building upon that foundation. It could be considered the support beams of the tradition, upon which the rest of the structure is built. So what is a dieta? In simple terms, a dieta is a contract made between a curandero, or student of curanderismo, and a particular plant spirit. For several days the dieter communes with the plant with no other distractions. No salt, sugar, spices, sex, touching others, electronics, or distractions. Food choices are limited to plantains, veggies and also fish if not vegetarian. The purpose of the dieta is to build a relationship with the plant spirit, and just like with building relationships with other people, the more sincere, honest, and well-intentioned attention a dieter gives to the plant spirit, the better the relationship will be. The spirit of the plant can be felt on subtle levels and dieters can become more aware of those sensations by directing their attention to them. A special bond is formed, a friendship between the dieter and the plant spirit. It is through this friendship that the curandero or student receives benefit from the relationship, the fruits of the dieta. This new friend provides information, guidance, and energy to assist in their personal healing process & can then call in these spirits into Ayahuasca ceremony to assist the passengers in their healing process. When dieting Sequoia last September, I experienced this massive tree as a gentle giant. His spirit was a beautiful purple color and this sweet melody came to me softly as I was looking out the window into the bright sky. As I hummed the melody the words & teachings came shortly after. Sequoia brings a sense of grounding and stability. If you are feeling swept up by life right now, listen to this Icaro to help calm your sweet soul back to your heart. Much love, Colleen
I would like to share an Icaro, (medicine song) that is sung in Ayahuasca ceremony in the Mestizo tradition. I call in 2 trees in for protection, Ayahuma (the cannonball tree), and Lupuna Blanca. Ayahuma is regarded as an immensely grounding master plant that can help you to gain resilience and wisdom through releasing past trauma and stored emotion. The warming protective qualities of the Ayahuma spirit can help us access previously unchartered levels of vulnerability. For me, Ayahuma created a wall of protection around me and is like my tree boyfriend :) representing the Sacred Masculine. Lupuna is one of the biggest trees in the Amazon. It stands tall and proud and reminds us to do the same. Connect to this tree to bring you strength, courage, expansion and self-value. For me, when dieting Lupuna, she brought in sparkling, white magic and helped me connect back to my power. In the song you will hear Spanish lyrics like Poderosa Medicina, which means powerful medicine, Poderoso icaroini, which means powerful icaro, Limpia limpia cuerpocito, which means clean our bodies, Limpia limpia shungoini, clean our hearts, Limpia limpia sentidito, which means clean our thoughts/emotions, and Pura Medicina, which means we are calling in medicine that is pure with love. I recommend to not listen to this icaro while driving. Sending you so much love in your healing journey my friend! Love, Colleen

Life has presented me this past week with an incredible amount of heartache and adversity after a very important partnership ended. I happened to be able to sit with Mother Ayahuasca Sunday evening, ever so synchronistically. After I released the overwhelming grief, I came to a place where I was completely untethered. No ground, no stability, nothing to grasp or hold on to. I have been here before in ceremony, but can tell myself it will pass and soon I will have grounding once the medicine wears off. This time I realized I have nothing to hold on to both in and out of ceremony. I was truly faced with the groundless ground. Terrified, I asked Mother Ayahuasca, "Where do I go? What do I do now? I am so lost." She whispered gently in my ear the clearest message I have ever heard, "Breathe and Trust." And so I did. Later in the ceremony I got the opportunity to sing to my teacher directly for a 1:1 energy clearing. I felt so grateful for him. For this powerful, incredible man who represents the Sacred Masculine, the dedication to uncovering truths, his purpose and most importantly, dedicating the merit of his work to all sentient beings. When I sang to him with the sound bowl by his head, I thanked him. For without his many years of work with the medicine, I wouldn't be here. I realized how powerful I am and how I need a partner who can hold a safe container for all my beauty, power and both my light and darkness. I called my King in. I can trust the flow of the universe. Life is flowing me to a more aligned path. The timing is impeccable. I am an unfolding tale, both the reader and the author. I am loved. I am never alone. I am a lighthouse, and a beacon of fire for this world to help people come back home to themselves. There is freedom in the untethering, there is freedom in the groundless ground, there is celebration in the totality of all that is. All I have to do is breathe and trust. This Icaro (medicine song) is one I wrote this week. I don't often share my music because I don't think have the best voice. I know though that it isn't about how good or bad I think I am, it is about the message behind it. I feel like it is a very important message to share. Love you all, Colleen
Meet Icaro! Icaro is an ambitious and smart student from Curichiba, Brazil. He needed Band 8 overall with 8 in listening and at least 7 in other modules to migrate to Canada. He first took the IELTS test two years ago and scored a Band 7, then started to prepare in a local language […] The post From Band 6.5 to 7.5 in writing, how Icaro took this huge step finally passed IELTS and now off to Canada appeared first on IELTS Podcast.
