Anne Wilson is an award-winning scriptwriter, journalist and careers counsellor. After doing an MSc and a PhD in social psychology at the LSE, and publishing a book on children's identity, she became a freelance journalist, writing for publications such as Just Seventeen, Cosmopolitan, the New York Times, Good Housekeeping and the Guardian. Anne moved on to writing for screen media and has won numerous awards for her films in the corporate sector. She has also published two crime novels, featuring Sara Kingsley, a single-mother detective — Truth or Dare and Governing Body — both published by the Women's Press.   Anne is committed to teaching and mentoring and in 2010 she started offering private careers counselling to new graduates as well as advising university applicants on their personal statements. She became a Royal Literary Fellow and, most recently, has been supporting students at Brunel University.   In this episode we tackle the mystique surrounding academic writing - what it actually is and why academics are vague about what 'good' looks like in their discipline.   Anne explains how writing is dynamic and how it changes from the starting out phase to writing up; and why your literature is not a fixed entity that won't change.   We also discuss the challenges of academic writing for neurodivergent scholars.   In closing, Anne offers a wealth of top tips including how to find your academic voice and how to ask for the feedback that you need. Come and join the conversation with the gorgeous Rosie Nixon: Author, Coach, Host, Philanthropist & HELLO! Magazine Editor-at-Large. We begin with Rosie's recollection of cutting out the pages of Smash Hits Magazine, graduating from Sussex University & getting her first taste of journalism. Her early career as a book editor, moving into magazines later, pouring over the pages of the Media Guardian as it was at the time, THE place for job opportunities in the industry, a far cry from the instant access job postings we have today! We chat about the day to day in an editorial role, being so immersed in the intensity of her work & the pressure of wearing so many hats. Going from working in teen magazines like Bliss & Just Seventeen, she then ventured into more celebrity content and started filling up her "little black book" of contacts over the years. We have a nostalgic look back on the times when life was simpler, when we used to get our news from physically picking up a copy of our favourite title! We reminisce about the old days with the flow chart quizzes in magazines, gathering info about friendships, boys, our favourite bands & growing up!Rosie is an advocate for inspiring women through her work with HELLO!, charity ambassadorships, coaching, campaigns, you can tell that the passion runs deeply with her and it's her life mission to make sure that women's voices are heard loud & clear.Chatting about the importance of looking at our lives & recognising when things need to change, Rosie tells me of her venture into coaching, specifically for midlife women, the transition having come from a time of her own personal change and the desire to help others to do the same. Continuing to want to amplify the voices of women in multiple capacities in issues such as menopause and FGM awareness, Rosie adds an extra layer of credibility to her campaigns and work by having the backing of leading experts, something which massively sets her apart from others, further cementing her as a trusted figure in her line of work! This comes from the personal sense of responsibility that she's always felt in her career to give the impressionable younger audience in particular, sound advice and access to the best information possible. It is clear that Rosie has and has always had the best interests of her audience at heart and tells me about the vital importance of starting conversations around topics that are often difficult to talk about. We move on to chat about all things books! Her path to becoming an author was always at the forefront of her mind with being a writer anyway as a journalist & editor, something she did find difficult in the beginning however was finding her authentic voice as a novelist. Convinced that there was a certain style she "should" be writing in, Rosie tells me about the lightbulb moment for her when she realised she should in fact write about what she knew! She tells me about her The Stylist trilogy, the main character going on her own epic journey of self-discovery, mirroring Rosie's own personal experiences in many ways. Exploring ways in which we as women find out what works for us,Rosie and I share what helped us through some of our darkest times. We discuss the key to knowing when we are ready to share our story, showing ourselves the same compassion & kindness that we would for others. The positive impact that journaling had, crediting it as a great tool that she utilised to help her in a therapeutic way. The re-release of her Be Kind book which was originally released during the pandemic, will now be available in paperback at a super affordable price in October 24. Packed full of tips, tools and inspirational words, centered around self compassion and kindness. Such an inspiring lady, breaking down barriers, championing others & paving the way, opening up conversations for so many women & the next generation, you are an absolute joy & a true definition of YES SHE CAN! In their heyday women's magazines sold 12 million copies a week. And at their best, these magazines changed women's lives. They advised, they inspired, they gave us a glimpse of a different way of being — and that was as true of Cosmopolitan as it was of the feminist magazine Spare Rib.    In our Season 2 finale, Ros Taylor talks to Sam Baker, who edited Just Seventeen, Company, Cosmopolitan and Red, about what it was like to play such a big role in teenage girls' lives, and Roisin Boyd, a member of the Spare Rib collective.    • “If you looked at Cosmopolitan, it was about how you should look, you were objectified… it was about how you should perform for men.” – Roisin Boyd  • “The sense of someone knowing you were thinking something almost before you thought it.” – Sam Baker  • “She had the idea of producing badges that said ‘Don't Do It, Di' … There was a lot of humour. You need humour to keep sane.” – Roisin Boyd    Written and presented by Ros Taylor. Produced by Jade Bailey. Original music by Dubstar. Managing Editor: Jacob Jarvis. Group Editor: Andrew Harrison. My guest today is the international bestseller Dorothy Koomson. She started young - she had her first stab at writing a book at 13 - and, like me, worked on Just Seventeen, amongst many other magazines, before actually publishing her first novel at 30. She has now written 16 Sunday Times bestsellers and is the biggest selling Black author of adult fiction in the UK - not bad for a woman whose debut novel was turned down for, amongst other things, having a Black character but not being about “the Black experience”.Her latest, I know what you've done, is just out in paperback and has been described as “Desperate Housewives but darker”. It's also completely stuffed with brilliant parts for midlife women - ITV, I'm looking at you!Dorothy joined me from Brighton to talk about feeling like you're “enough”, 80s TV crushes, the gynae and thyroid hell that gave her constant hot flushes, facing up to grey pubic hair and why there's still A LOT of work to do when it comes to telling all women's stories. Oh and why we need to bring back Golden Girls. I'm here for that!• You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at Bookshop.org, including I Know What You've Done by Dorothy Koomson and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me!• The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Emily Sandford. This is Set Piece Menu - the podcast where four friends talk football over food. And this time they're doing it live! The 100th Episode Spectacular is upon us, as a room of (actually paying) guests join Andy, Rory, Steven and Hugh as part of the Manchester Podcast Festival. The football: It Must Have Been Love... But Is It Over Now? We discuss if the enjoyment we get out of football is now outweighed by the things we don't like about it - and wonder if there might even be a need for us both to go on a break. The issue is decided by the panel completing the kind of quiz you'd find in the pages of Just Seventeen. The food: Brownies (with a special ingredient), made for all 100-plus people in the room by Nicky Hinchcliffe, to whom we are eternally grateful. Thanks to all those who came to join us for our live show! Pics can be found in all the usual places, including: @setpiecemenu facebook.com/setpiecemenu And you can email the podcast on setpiecemenu@gmail.com

Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever seems to. This is a collection of highlights from shows twenty five to thirty, featuring Martin Belam on the Laurel And Hardy cartoon, Jenny Morrill on The Just Seventeen Yearbook, Jack Kibble-White on Don't Give Up Your Day Job by Richard Digance, Tim Worthington on Secrets From The School Underground, Ben Baker on Looks Familiar, John Rain on Hello Mum and Phil Norman on The Country Life Christmas Box. Along the way we'll be getting annoyed at a fictional schoolboy’s opinions on Monty Python’s Flying Circus, critically evaluating Richard Murdoch’s cameo in The Wire, and trying our hardest to avoid talking about a cannibalistic emulsified cross between Last Tango In Paris and Straw Dogs. Plus there’s also something you may not have heard before - Tim talking to Emma Burnell and Steve Fielding on The Zeitgeist Tapes about Doctor Who and politics... Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever seems to. Joining Tim this time is writer Jenny Morrill, who's rifling through an eighties teenager's diary in search of any evidence of Boots Global Collection, the Just Seventeen Yearbook, a P&O Advert using La Mer, an Eastern European animation about a bird that gets turned into a bat, Melody Maker column Diary Of A Manic Street Preachers Fan, and a film her dad remembers about some sheep. Along the way we’ll also be finding out which face mask Oasis fans favoured, who 'Andrew' was in Rainbow, and which is the most animated out of Thom Yorke and a poster of Thom Yorke, not to mention examining the evidence of The Snowman's sinister culture-jamming agenda. Theresa May has called for tech firms to do more to tackle online extremism. Meanwhile in Germany new legislation is due to come into force next month that will mean the likes of Google and Facebook facing huge fines of up to 50m euros if they fail to remove extremist content. Markus Beckedahl is a prominent free speech campaigner and founder of the Netzpolitik blog. Sam Baker edited some of Britain's biggest magazines - Just Seventeen, Cosmopolitan and Red - but then in 2015 jumped ship. She co-founded The Pool, an entirely digital publication, which today is experiencing steady growth. The incident at Parsons Green prompted accusations that some journalists were behaving like "vultures". Members of the public who had posted photos and video from the scene soon found themselves swamped with requests from journalists. Steve Jones is the Press Association's Social Media Editor and Kaya Burgess is a reporter at The Times. Presenter: Amol Rajan Producer: Richard Hooper.
