Journalist and Editor Badar Alam joins us on The Pakistan Experience to discuss Print Journalism, The Media Industry, Censorship, Herald, the business of News, Channel Owners, Advertising and the state of Journalism today. Muhammad Badar Alam has been a journalist since 1992. He worked as the editor of Herald magazine, Pakistan's premier current affairs magazine, from June 2010 to July 2019 – until the magazine was forced to close down as a punishment for its independent editorial policy and fearless reporting. He then co-founded loksujag, an independent digital news media outlet dedicated to public interest investigative journalism, and worked as its chief editor between April 2020 and November 2022. He has also worked as a bureau chief, a reporter, a foreign correspondent and a deputy editor for different news outlets. He, similarly, has vast experience in journalism training and research. Well, we know Ronnie D's running (even if Twitter's audio feed wasn't); it's the support that he and Trump combined get that's so troubling. For a group of self-professed patriots and lovers of country, it's just odd they go with "dividers" instead of uniters. Also odd that Elon "free speech" Musk aligns in any way with Governor Ron "Book Ban This," eh? Even Amanda Gorman's "The Hill We Climb" is a no-go in a Florida school, thanks to Ron's (ahem) "leadership." I'm joined today by Craig Harrington, research director at Media Matters for America. The idea was to discuss print media coverage of the debt ceiling (made-up) crisis, and we do get to it; but it's hard not to note the one-year anniversary of the Uvalde mass school shooting massacre, and also the death of an icon in Tina Turner.

I'm originally from Virginia (Richmond and Hampton). I graduated from Hampton University in 2005 with a degree in Print Journalism. I moved to Atlanta in 2006, where I started freelancing and working for a local magazine before it folded. I've been published in XXL, Complex, The Source, Vibe, Slam, Dime and others. I started working weekends for XXL in 2012 and did that for a decade before being hired as the news editor full-time back in April. But I have always been a horror fan since a kid, which not many people know outside of my inner circle. Mostly because my older cousin had me watching and reading the genre when I was way too young. lol I'm the person who all my friends think I'm weird because I fux with scary movies so heavy. It's been a dream of mine to become a published author and possibly get into film as well. So, a few years ago, I decided to write my first novel, Consumption. It's about a woman who is an extreme couponer who is about to have the sale of all sales at her home when the zombie apocalypse breaks outs. So, she must defend her home and all her goods from the undead and savage survivivors alike. Think Panic Room meets Night of the Living Dead, but with an all Black cast. It's also an examination of consumerism (get it lol) and racism. All the chapters are named after mostly hip-hop songs, which serve as the soundtrack for the book. Some even provide foreshadowing into upcoming chapters. I finally finished the book earlier this year. Still deciding if I want to publish it myself or go through a publisher.

As the United States moves on from the Trump era — and perhaps begins to contemplate what a second one might look like — conversations about journalism's relationship to Trump and his ideas are cropping up all over the place. Books like News After Trump address these questions through a scholarly lens, but Covering Politics in the Age of Trump (LSU Press, 2021) looks at coverage of Trump from the perspective of journalists who cover national politics.  Edited by Jerry Ceppos, the book takes a wide-ranging view of the relationship between the forty-fifth president and the Fourth Estate. In concise, illuminating, and often personal essays, two dozen top journalists address topics such as growing concerns about political bias and journalistic objectivity; increasing consternation about the media's use of anonymous sources; the practices journalists employ to gain access to wary administration officials; and reporters' efforts to improve journalism in an era of round-the-clock cable news. Contributors to the book include Ashley Parker of The Washington Post, McKay Coppins of The Atlantic, and Charlie Cook of the Cook Political Report. In this conversation, Ceppos discusses how news organizations are starting to "take off the straightjacket" of detachment and objectivity and what that might mean for re-establishing trust with readers and peeling back the curtain on how journalists do their work.
