Welcome to The Giddy Carousel of Pop! In this episode, we take a trip to the Carousel's reading room to talk to find out all about Phew, Eh Readers?, a new book collecting selected works of Smash Hits and Q scribe Tom Hibbert, with the book's co-editor Jasper Murison-Bowie and designer (and former Smash Hits staffer) Caroline Grimshaw. We also hear from Hibbert's Smash Hits colleagues Barry McIlhenney, Sylvia Patterson* and Mark Ellen who share their memories of working with him. Here's the book blurb:The influence of Tom Hibbert's music writing across print, radio, TV and podcasts is incomparable. From his genre-defining work at Smash Hits to his 'Who the Hell ... ?' profiles for Q magazine and beyond, this book brings together many of Hibbert's funniest writings.Compiled by Barney Hoskyns and Jasper Murison-Bowie at Rock's Backpages, the archive of music journalism, Phew, Eh Readers? showcases some of Hibbert's greatest pieces. Presented thematically and chronologically, they highlight his marvellously eccentric perspective on life and popular culture. Many leading writers and journalists attest to Hibbert's genius. This compendium supplements his writing with new reflections on Tom from some of his peers, colleagues and admirers, including Mark Ellen, Bob Stanley, Tom Doyle, Chris Heath, Sylvia Patterson, along with his widow Allyce.Phew, Eh Readers? is a must-read homage to one of the most influential writers of our time, a man who left an indelible mark on our cultural landscape.HOSTS: Simon Galloway and Gavin HoggGUESTS: Jasper Murison-Bowie & Caroline Grimshaw*Sylvia Patterson clip from Word In Your Ear episode 225: https://shows.acast.com/word-in-your-ear-2/episodes/5fe229acf896715ee8319696. In this extra-special episode we welcome into the RBP lair not one but two legends of music journalism. Former Smash Hits/Q/MOJO supremo Mark Ellen and Sylvia (I'm Not With The Band) Patterson join us to pay tribute to their late friend and colleague upon the publication of our book Phew, Eh Readers? The Life and Writing of Tom Hibbert – the single funniest music journalist who ever lived. Both guests recount their initial and unforgettable encounters with "Hibbs" – Mark's at New Music News in 1980; Sylvia's at Smash Hits in 1986 — before we look back at Tom's early years, his marriage to the marvellous Allyce Tessier and his pop passions from the Byrds to Big Star (via Moby Grape and the 13th Floor Elevators). Interspersing the conversation with quotes from the classic Hibbert pieces collected in Phew, Eh Readers? and the tributes to Tom we commissioned for the book — plus clips from audio interviews with Jon Bon Jovi, Vivien Stanshall and Tom's Smash Hits colleague Neil Tennant — we follow our hero's path through his brilliant career. Stops along the way include his entirely made-up letters to New Music News, his 1987 audience with Margaret Thatcher, his infamous "Who the Hell" interviews for Q and his hilariously irreverent columns for The Observer and the Mail On Sunday. Not forgetting the Love Trousers, the neo-psychedelic covers band he formed with Mr. Ellen... The pathos of Tom's twilight years, following his 1997 hospitalisation with pneumonia and pancreatitis — is touched upon before we wrap up with a fond nod to his old pal "Juggins". We shall not read his like again. Phew, Eh Readers?: The Life and Writing of Tom Hibbert is published by Nine Eight Books on 1st February, 2024. Pieces discussed: Tom Hibbert articles on Rock's Backpages, Billy Idol on Majorca, Jon Bon Jovi audio, Neil Tennant on the RBP podcast, Just Like Gene Autry, the Margaret Thatcher interview??!, Who the hell does Ringo Starr think he is? and Who the hell does Roger Waters think he is?

Welcome to episode 172 of Love That Album. It's December, so once again, it's time for me to reach out to 5 wonderful music media people in Melbourne to discuss with me their favourite music for 2023 – new or old (but recently discovered). As per usual, these magnificent people I admire brought some great “logs to throw on the conversational fire” (to steal from David Hepworth and Mark Ellen). However, to play all 5 people on the one episode would have made this a 4 hour plus episode.....not a sin in my book, but some people prefer shows with a more digestible time frame. To that end, I present this time around 3 of my guests, and some feedback from a couple of listeners all to talk about great music of the year. Episode 173 will feature the remaining 2 guests and more feedback. This time around we will hear from Rockwiz and Friday Revue host Brian Nankervis, music journalist and author Jeff Jenkins, and owner of Melbourne's Rocksteady Records Pat Monaghan. I am thrilled that these fellow music fans and knowledgeable gents would give of their time to this little podcast. Get out your pen and paper and prepare to make a list of your next favourite albums. Part 173 with Ian McFarlane and Billy Pinnell will be out within the next week or so. Thanks so much to anyone who listened to the show, was a guest on the show, contributed conversation to the LTA Facebook group, or reached out to me directly directly over the year. More coming in 2024 (you're welcome / sorry). Also huge gratitude to my brothers and sisters over at Pantheon Podcasts....some great shows and people over there who have corresponded with me over the year – there will be some crossover shows next year. The process of recording music in 2023 has changed drastically to what it was in the latter half of the 20th century.....sort of. Sure, musicians can go in to a recording studio with an engineer and record in a way not dissimilar to the days of old. However, as technology changed inside professional studios, it changed for musicians who wanted to get a great sound in their bedroom. Many studios couldn't compete and only their legacy remains in our record collections. ....yet, EMI Studios at 3 Abbey Road, St John's Wood, London endures. It has even been declared a national treasure. Welcome to episode 168 of Love That Album. Music fans have been treated to stories about many of the great studios in popular music history – Sun, Nashville RCA Studio B, Ardent Studios.....but arguably, the most famous is Abbey Road (as it is now called). Music journalist and broadcaster David Hepworth has written an excellent book, “Abbey Road: The Inside Story of the World's Most Famous Recording Studio”. While the most casual music fan may only be aware of its Beatles connection (not least for the zebra crossing in front of it), the studio had an incredible history both before, during and after the Fabs reign. It may be one of the few big studios left. David joins me to talk about his research into the book and to tell some stories about the incredible musicians who recorded there and the technical innovation that took place there.....and to be honest (as Frank Santopadre would say), we only scratched the surface. My gratitude to David for speaking with me about a fascinating piece of modern music history. What else besides Abbey Road have Richard Tauber, Mrs Mills and Noel Gallagher in common? Bugger all I'd suggest. You can pick up “Abbey Road: The Inside Story of the World's Most Famous Recording Studio” at all good bookshops, and online at the usual places that sell books. Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner and you are listening to Succotash. If this is your first time here, welcome. I hope you will find something to enjoy in the soundcast you are about to listen to. If you have listened to Succotash before, welcome back! Thank you for choosing to spend your time with us AGAIN. If the time you listened before was last week's episode, show 324 called “Debate, Argument, Brits & Smut” hosted by show creator and executive producer Marc Hershon, then you know why you are not hearing him in this episode. Incidentally, in that episode you heard the clips from the soundcasts If I Were You, The Legal Geeks, Off Menu, and Pornomedy…and you can still find that episode in the archive at www.succotashshow.com if you would like to hear it again. We've been alternating the hosting duties pretty consistently for the last 2 1/2 years of our 11+ years of this show…so that is why this week's episode, #325, is hosted by me…Tyson Saner.…and in this episode I've got clips from the soundcasts Word In Your Ear, Going Deep from "Earwolf Presents", and Bubble. I've got another classic advertisement from our 100% FAKE SPONSOR "Henderson's Pants" and their legendary Flying Jodphurs for you later in the program. CLIPS Word In Your EarFrom the show description for Word In Your Ear, we learn that Mark Ellen and David Hepworth have been talking about and writing about music together and individually for a collective eighty years in magazines like Smash Hits, Mojo and The Word and on radio and TV programmes like "Rock On", "Whistle Test" and VH-1. Over 13 years ago, when working on the late magazine The Word, they began producing podcasts. Some listeners have been kind enough to say these have been very special to them. When the magazine folded in 2012 they kept the spirit of those podcasts alive in regular Word In Your Ear evenings in which they spoke to musicians and authors in front of an audience. Our clip comes from the episode that dropped just a couple of weeks ago, on September 27, 2022, entitled "Hilary Mantel, Zappa track or ad slogan and the day Beefheart sold Aldous Huxley a vacuum-cleaner". The snippet we have is from a bit of fun near the beginning of the program followed by a bit of seriousness and some thoughts on how commentary and narrative are intertwined…is how I interpret what I am hearing. Going DeepFrom the description: Welcome to the office of America's "most acclaimed couples therapist," Diana Deep (Lily Sullivan). Listen and learn as she counsels couples using her infamous “hands-on” approach to help husbands, wives, lovers, thruples, first-daters, booty calls, and on-again off-again sexters. This improv comedy podcast parodies couples therapy in ways that will make you laugh, cry, and go "Deep" into your own relationships. The clip was harvested from the episode entitled "Culture Shock Catharsis with Nick Wiger & Heather Anne Campbell", in which Dr. Deep speaks with Helga (Heather Anne Campbell) and Guy (Nick Wiger) about their disagreement over Helga's fifth oven purchase. Dr. Deep leads this session down the proverbial "trail of breadcrumbs" to reveal the lies at the core of their marriage. (This episode and other episodes are in the "Earwolf Presents" listings at this time but are originally in the "Stitcher Exclusive" category, but if you want access to what I presume is all of the show's episodes then you will need access to Stitcher Premium.) Bubble The show's description goes a little something like this: Welcome to Fairhaven, a literal Bubble of corporate utopia set amid the wild, goblin-infested Brush. The first scripted comedy series from Maximum Fun, Bubble was created by Jordan Morris (Jordan and Jesse Go), and tells the tale of a small band of monster killers struggling to make ends meet and find love in a nightmarish version of the gig economy. Starring: Alison Becker (Parks and Recreation), Keith Powell (30 Rock), Cristela Alonzo (Cristela), Eliza Skinner (The Late Late Show) and Mike Mitchell (Love), with appearances by Judy Greer, John Hodgman, Martin Starr, Paul F. Tompkins, and many, many more. I clipped this snip from back in the before time - June of 2018 - their very first installment entitled "Huntrs". Morgan, who is good at killing monsters, gets a new gig and a new partner. And that's all I have for you in this episode. I do hope you find something that you enjoy or at least to be interesting enough to experience again. I've already got ideas for what I will clip for the next episode I bring you, but that isn't for a couple weeks in my timeframe so why even bring it up? Maybe it is the holiday season that is rapidly approaching, encroaching…whatever you prefer. I think about time a LOT lately. That is to say, I consider how it can pass without notice sometimes, and every now and then something notable occurs which makes me stop and consider how fast life really seems to be happening. My parents just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with my brother and I and our spouses, and that too was over in an eyeblink. Now I am here writing about it, and in a moment I will be done writing about it…and soon I will read these words into a microphone, edit all the audio together, and create a presentation that you will experience in more-or-less a half an hour of your life. So thank you for spending that time listening to us. I recently added a few new links to my content over at www.tysonsaner.com including my TikTok and my new Redbubble store. I might as well mention that because you are already here and listening so I'd be a fool to not make the best of that opportunity. Thank you for listening, be decent to each other, check this feed next week for show #326 hosted by Marc Hershon, and if you think we are good enough to share with other people then we would be forever grateful to you if you were to pass the Succotash. — Tyson Saner

Mark Ellen talks to David Hepworth about his new book "Overpaid, Oversexed and Over There" which describes how British imitations came out from under the shadow of American originators in the early 60s, how a handful of acts from the UK went on to command the heights of the worldwide music industry, the things they learned, the things they taught and the transatlantic traffic in sounds and styles which led from the Beatles to Boy George. Also includes: the amazing story of the Dave Clark Five, the strange genius of the Animals, how the British invented the guitar hero, what the Stones learned in America, the bands that were built in the UK with the US in mind, why punk rock took years to detonate in America, the one thing that makes American music stars different from their British counterparts and the reason 2020 may turn out to be just like 1961. Gary Crowley has just put together “Gary Crowley's Lost 80s”, a lovingly-curated four CD set of the kind of oldies that the radio station computer doesn't automatically reach for. It's the kind of stuff that might have soundtracked his teenage discos, his nights at the Wag, his shows on Capital Radio and GLR or served to warm up the crowd as he presided over shows by Wham or the Style Council. He came along to Word In Your Ear to talk to Mark Ellen and David Hepworth about his extraordinary career, which began with meeting Joe Strummer in the street, climaxed with introducing Oasis at Knebworth and involved everybody from Elton John to the Wonder Stuff. On this occasion the two of them were joined by old friends, writer Jude Rogers and broadcaster/podcaster Geoff Lloyd, to chew over some of David's theories, such as why the Beatles were underrated and why you should never play pop records at funerals, and to add a few of their own, which cover such topics as the girlfriend who changed the direction of popular music, the redundancy of the live album and the records that you should and shouldn't play at a wedding disco. As a teenager Dylan Jones was one of that generation who saw David Bowie on “Top Of The Pops” in 1972 and felt he was talking directly to them. As an art student he worked as an extra on a Bowie film and even gave him a light for his cigarette. As the editor of such magazines as Arena and GQ he went on to interview Bowie numerous times. Now he's put together “David Bowie: A Life”, a massive oral history of the man's life and brilliant career. It draws on the recollections of everyone from old school friends like George Underwood through fellow musicians like Rick Wakeman to the artists, film makers and fashion leaders whose direction he affected. In this special extended chat with Mark Ellen and David Hepworth Dylan talks about everything Bowie, including how small he was in some directions and yet how big in others. All this and a good deal more is in his memoir The Speed Of Sound, which also covers his pop success and his adventures at the heart of the great Internet revolution. There's a rich British tradition of well brought up young men from the leafier suburbs developing a fixation on music from a very different culture and somehow getting themselves a job playing said music on the radio. Nobody has done it more successfully and more unexpectedly than David Rodigan. For a part of the career he's run it alongside his work as an actor. No wonder there's so much interest in turning his book “My Life In Reggae” into a film. It's a story rich in humour and packed with incident, some of which he recounted to Mark Ellen and David Hepworth. Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast.
