Sky, Storytelling, AI and the Future of Youth Education with Nishy Lall In this episode of The EdTech Podcast, Philippa is joined by Nishy Lall, a strategic senior leader with over 15 years' experience shaping large-scale social impact, youth engagement, digital equity and inclusion programmes across the UK, Europe and the US. Nishy leads Sky's youth and social impact work, helping young people fulfil their potential through digital access, creativity, storytelling and real-world industry experiences. Through initiatives such as Sky Up Academy Studios, The Edit, and wider Sky youth programmes, she shares how Sky is opening doors into media, technology and creative careers for young people who may not otherwise see those pathways as available to them. This conversation explores how immersive media experiences, AI, creative technology and industry partnerships can help young people build confidence, communication skills, digital literacy and a stronger sense of belonging. From creating news reports in professional-style studios to using tools such as Adobe Express for storytelling challenges, Nishy explains how Sky's programmes support both teachers and learners by connecting curriculum, creativity and future skills.  At the heart of the episode is a powerful message: opportunities shape futures. When young people are given access to the right environments, tools and encouragement, they can begin to see themselves differently — not as a finished article, but as someone with agency, curiosity and potential.   Episode Summary Nishy Lall from Sky joins The EdTech Podcast to discuss how Sky's youth programmes are helping young people build confidence, skills and aspirations through digital media, AI, creative technology and real-world industry experiences. The conversation explores Sky Up Academy Studios, where young people step into studio environments, take on production roles, create their own news reports and experience the power of storytelling from script to screen. Nishy also shares the impact of The Edit, Sky's schools-based storytelling challenge developed with Adobe, which gives young people access to creative tools and the opportunity to explore themes such as climate change, diversity, mental health, wellbeing and media literacy. Philippa and Nishy discuss the role of AI in education, the importance of ethical and responsible use, and why young people should be supported to see technology as an enabler rather than a replacement for human creativity. They also explore digital equity, inclusion, teacher support, lifelong learning, creative career pathways and the importance of helping every young person feel that they belong in future-facing industries. Key Themes Sky's youth and social impact work Nishy shares how Sky's social impact programmes are designed to help young people fulfil their potential through digital access, creativity and future skills. Sky Up Academy Studios The episode explores how students visit immersive studio spaces, take on roles such as presenter, editor, director and camera operator, and create their own media content linked to curriculum themes. Digital equity and access Nishy describes digital equity as fairness — ensuring young people have access to tools, experiences and environments that allow them to express themselves and discover new possibilities. AI, creativity and responsible use The conversation explores how young people are already engaging with AI, why prompt literacy and critical thinking matter, and how AI can support ideation and storytelling when used responsibly. Creative technology and career pathways Sky's programmes help students understand the range of roles within media, broadcast, film, storytelling and creative technology, opening up pathways they may never have previously considered. Supporting teachers and curriculum learning The discussion highlights how media production can bring subjects such as history, geography, English, climate education and online safety to life in new and memorable ways. Belonging, confidence and inclusion Nishy shares examples of young people thriving in studio environments, including those who may struggle in traditional classroom settings, and explains why confidence and belonging are central to long-term impact.   Chapter Markers 00:00 Introduction to Nishy Lall and Sky's youth impact 02:30 Sky Up Academy Studios: a hands-on industry experience 03:18 Building teamwork, communication and digital literacy 05:07 AI in education and young people's digital confidence 06:20 Inspiring creativity and confidence in young learners 08:01 Inclusion, accessibility and opportunity for all 09:23 The fourth industrial revolution and youth readiness 10:53 Real-world careers: from studio experience to industry pathways 13:20 Using media to teach history and other curriculum subjects 15:21 Supporting diverse learners and students with additional needs 18:50 Earth Day, World Book Day and meaningful media projects 21:39 Media literacy and responsible content creation 22:55 AI, creativity, ethics and prompt literacy 25:26 The future of work and lifelong learning 28:34 Sky's role in digital innovation and education 35:01 Building confidence, aspiration and belonging 37:24 Partnerships, industry collaboration and authentic learning 42:01 Preparing educators for a changing digital world 44:14 Creating opportunities for all young people 45:35 Closing reflections and future outlook 46:13 Empowering youth through creative education 46:43 Why digital equity matters 47:08 Community, engagement and the role of EdTech Guest Bio Nishy Lall is a strategic senior leader with over 15 years' experience shaping large-scale social impact, youth engagement, digital equity and inclusion strategies across the UK, Europe and the US. Hola Chicos! Welcome back to Spanish Loops! Today we talk about one of the most beautiful and honestly, unique traditions in Spain: Sant Jordi in Catalonia. So… who is Saint George? Picture this: a brave knight, a terrifying dragon, and a princessabout to meet her fate. According to the Catalan version of the legend, Saint George slays the dragon and from the dragon's blood, a red rose blooms, which he gives to the princess. And just like that… a symbol of love is born.Fast forward a few centuries, and that legend transforms into something magical.Every April 23rd, Catalonia celebrates Sant Jordi, its patron saint, with streets filled with books and roses everywhere. Think of it as a mix between Valentine's Day and World Book Day, but with way more soul. Traditionally, men gave women roses, and women gave men books, but today, everyone gives bothto everyone. It's about love, culture, and connection. Now here's where it gets even more interesting: the book tradition didn't come from the legend, it was added much later. In 1929, a literary initiative in Barcelona promoted reading, eventually aligning with April 23rd, the symbolic date linkedto literary giants like Cervantes and Shakespeare. So, what you have today is a perfect fusion: Love from the legend and Culture from literature. And trust us, if you've ever walked through Barcelona on that day, it's unforgettable.By the way, Jorge has already captured this magic in a special video on his YouTube channel during a Sant Jordi celebration; the name of his channel is Traveling with Jorge in YouTube. Firefighters have been tackling a blaze in a derelict building next to Ashford College. Huge plumes of smoke were seen coming from Swanton House in Elwick Road yesterday evening. Hear from our reporter Max Chesson who has been to the scene. Also in today's episode,  a document detailing where 23,000 homes could be built in Canterbury, Whitstable and Herne Bay will be debated by councillors for the first time tonight. It's known as a Local Plan and also sets out where things like roads will need to be constructed to support new developments and growing populations. Our local democracy reporter Dan Esson has more information. The MP for Ashford is warning that exposure to misinformation on social media is damaging children's mental health. It's as TikTok videos have emerged encouraging so called "school wars" across the county, with organised fighting between pupils. A number of schools have sent letters home to parents saying it's already impacting children. We've been speaking to Sojan Joseph. Vouchers will be handed out in schools across Kent as we celebrate World Book Day. It's as recent figures from the National Literacy Trust show daily reading levels for children have reached a 20-year low. Hear from award winning Kent author Annabel Steadman who wrote the Skandar series. And in sport, the Maidstone United manager's admitted he may need to add to his squad due to injury problems. Strike Muhammadu Faal was stretchered off on Tuesday night while goalkeeper Nathan Harness suffered concussion. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. I am so excited to say that my guest on the GWA Podcast is the author, academic, screenwriter, creator of fantastical worlds and nocturnal roof-climber, Katherine Rundell. An award-winning non-fiction author for adults and fiction writer for children – whose books have sold over 4million copies worldwide, Rundell has penned works that span from the Impossible Creatures series – set in magical, endangered Archipelago – to Rooftoppers, about a young girl called Sophie who climbs the roofs of Paris in search of her mother, which is, one of my favourites. Because another of Rundell's great works is Why You Should Read Children's Books Even Though You Are So Old and Wise, a small yet mighty book that argues for children's fiction as integral to our reading output. A place which invites us not only to understand the fundamentals of good and evil, but reminds us of the importance of taking kids seriously, as Sophie, the protagonist in Rooftoppers, reminds us: “Do not underestimate children, do not underestimate girls.” I also highly recommend Rundell's lecture on this subject that was published in the London Review of Books last winter. A Fellow of St Catherine's College, Oxford and quondam fellow of All Souls College, Oxford – where she was admitted as the youngest fellow in 2008 – Rundell is also a scholar on the 16th century poet, preacher, politician, lawyer, Dean of St Paul's Cathedral (and more) John Donne, with her electrically-written biography, Super Infinite: The Transformations of John Donne that won her the Baillie Gifford Prize. A #1 NYT and ST bestselling author, the winner of Waterstones Book of the Year, and the Author of the Year, as recognised by the British Book Awards, Rundell is one of our greatest thinkers, writers, creators, and campaigner for “putting imagination first”. And it is reading her books that I am reminded of that superpower, the brilliance of human capability that not only gets us to dream up different worlds, but imagine how we can make this complex one a much more beautiful and better place. This week marks World Book Day 2026, and excitingly the publication of my first children's book, so I couldn't be more honoured to speak with Katherine today, about writing, art, books, and more. –– KATHERINE'S BOOKS: https://www.waterstones.com/author/katherine-rundell/53343 MY CHILDREN'S BOOK! https://www.waterstones.com/book/the-story-of-art-without-men/katy-hessel/9780241824214 -- THIS EPISODE IS GENEROUSLY SUPPORTED BY THE LEVETT COLLECTION: https://www.famm.com/en/ https://www.instagram.com/famm_mougins // https://www.merrellpublishers.com/9781858947037 Follow us: Katy Hessel: @thegreatwomenartists / @katy.hessel Sound editing by Nada Smiljanic Music by Ben Wetherfield
