Our local democracy reporter Dan Esson has more information. The MP for Ashford is warning that exposure to misinformation on social media is damaging children's mental health. A number of schools have sent letters home to parents saying it's already impacting children. We've been speaking to Sojan Joseph. Vouchers will be handed out in schools across Kent as we celebrate World Book Day. It's as recent figures from the National Literacy Trust show daily reading levels for children have reached a 20-year low. Hear from award winning Kent author Annabel Steadman who wrote the Skandar series. And in sport, the Maidstone United manager's admitted he may need to add to his squad due to injury problems. I am so excited to say that my guest on the GWA Podcast is the author, academic, screenwriter, creator of fantastical worlds and nocturnal roof-climber, Katherine Rundell. An award-winning non-fiction author for adults and fiction writer for children – whose books have sold over 4million copies worldwide, Rundell has penned works that span from the Impossible Creatures series – set in magical, endangered Archipelago – to Rooftoppers, about a young girl called Sophie who climbs the roofs of Paris in search of her mother, which is, one of my favourites. Because another of Rundell's great works is Why You Should Read Children's Books Even Though You Are So Old and Wise, a small yet mighty book that argues for children's fiction as integral to our reading output. A place which invites us not only to understand the fundamentals of good and evil, but reminds us of the importance of taking kids seriously, as Sophie, the protagonist in Rooftoppers, reminds us: “Do not underestimate children, do not underestimate girls.” I also highly recommend Rundell's lecture on this subject that was published in the London Review of Books last winter. A Fellow of St Catherine's College, Oxford and quondam fellow of All Souls College, Oxford – where she was admitted as the youngest fellow in 2008 – Rundell is also a scholar on the 16th century poet, preacher, politician, lawyer, Dean of St Paul's Cathedral (and more) John Donne, with her electrically-written biography, Super Infinite: The Transformations of John Donne that won her the Baillie Gifford Prize. A #1 NYT and ST bestselling author, the winner of Waterstones Book of the Year, and the Author of the Year, as recognised by the British Book Awards, Rundell is one of our greatest thinkers, writers, creators, and campaigner for “putting imagination first”. And it is reading her books that I am reminded of that superpower, the brilliance of human capability that not only gets us to dream up different worlds, but imagine how we can make this complex one a much more beautiful and better place. This week marks World Book Day 2026, and excitingly the publication of my first children's book, so I couldn't be more honoured to speak with Katherine today, about writing, art, books, and more. –– KATHERINE'S BOOKS: https://www.waterstones.com/author/katherine-rundell/53343 MY CHILDREN'S BOOK! https://www.waterstones.com/book/the-story-of-art-without-men/katy-hessel/9780241824214 -- THIS EPISODE IS GENEROUSLY SUPPORTED BY THE LEVETT COLLECTION: https://www.famm.com/en/ https://www.instagram.com/famm_mougins // https://www.merrellpublishers.com/9781858947037 Follow us: Katy Hessel: @thegreatwomenartists / @katy.hessel Sound editing by Nada Smiljanic Music by Ben Wetherfield

Fewer children are reading for pleasure than ever before. Screens are louder. Notifications are faster. Attention is shorter. So in a world of endless scrolling, does sitting down with a book still matter? In this World Book Day special, we ask the difficult questions: Does reading for pleasure really shape success? And do events like World Book Day create lasting change - or just a moment of enthusiasm? One bold claim. An honest debate. If you want to succeed, read.

Are pricey bespoke guns worth their stratospheric prices? My friend and Field & Stream's shotgun editor Phil Bourjaily has an answer and he should know. He's been writing on the subject for decades and now we get the lowdown. Phil also shares what he looks for (and so should we) when buying any shotgun, the joys and limitations of heavy and light guns, grouse hunting with a Golden Retriever and Cocker Spaniel, and the real reason shotguns were originally engraved. We'll also cover Phil's hunting season, reminisce about some dogs, and get sound advice on hunting strategy. We let you know what's on TV today/tonight and had an interesting conversation about Steve Buscemi's character from "The Big Lebowski". In case you were unaware, he gets killed in the movie…and speaking of character deaths, we also discussed a list of the most shocking TV character deaths of all time. Remember Buford the dog from last week? He helped save a toddler that wandered several miles away from home. Well…he's getting showered with gifts by people from all over. And in other dog-related news, a bunch of firefighters in North Carolina were called-in to rescue a puppy that had fallen into a storm drain. Not ground-breaking news, but older people keep a running tab on things that they think the younger generation cannot or will not do…including some common skills that they think Gen-Z lacks. Sant Jordi is a Catalan cultural celebration held on April 23. It's Catalonia's Valentine's Day and it served as the inspiration for World Book Day. Couples, friends, and families give each other gifts of roses and books, commemorating the legendary slaying of the dragon by Sant Jordi - Saint George, in English. In this week's podcast, we delve into Catalan literature and analyze its translation into English. Host Beth Cohen sits down with reporter Cillian Shields to discuss the origins of the Sant Jordi celebration and its evolution over time. Cillian meets Peter Bush and Laura McGloughlin, two of the most notable contemporary Catalan-to-English translators, who reflect on what it means to translate a novel and explain their approach to the task. Both review some of their most iconic translations, including the works of Josep Pla, Emili Teixidor, Toni Hill, and Bel Olid, while discussing current trends and emerging voices in Catalan literature. Cillian and Beth wrap up by sharing some of their favorite reads by Catalan authors and exchanging book recommendations for this year's Sant Jordi. This week, our Catalan phrase is “Un llibre és com un jardí que es porta a la butxaca,” a proverb of Arabic origin that translates as “A book is like a garden carried in your pocket.” Just like a garden, books are full of life and beautiful details - but small enough to keep with you wherever you go.
Max Pearson presents a collection of the week's Witness History interviews from the BBC World Service. In November 1995, a proposal of having an annual day focused on celebrating books was put forward at the UNESCO conference in Paris. The idea came from a long-established Spanish celebration ‘The Day of Books and Roses'.The first World Book Day was on 23 April 1996. Although some countries now celebrate World Book Day on different dates, it's marked on 23 April in the majority of countries.Pere Vicens is a book publisher from Barcelona in Spain and one of the creators of World Book Day. He tells Gill Kearsley the origins of this now annual event. Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. The Cymru Connection is officially newsworthy: we said it could be significant, and boy was it.Sadly we didn't get a 2000 word thinkpiece on whether opening with the question ‘where did you go to school?' is actually harmful for Elis's xC (expected connections), but we did get a 3 minute package on the nation's favourite feature that will no doubt be talked about for decades to come. The boys reflect on their newfound cultural importance, and John discovers a hard truth about how his role on this podcast is viewed in Wales.Beyond all the excitement, there's chat about the downsides of dressing your children for World Book Day, there's a Shame Well that's so shameful it leads to everyone talking French, and the boys wonder why farms always have massive piles of tyres. Your usual fare, basically.Oh, and we finally get to relive some of John's early stand up material. Brace yourselves. If you feel compelled to offer up some newsworthy items of your own, send them to elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk, or WhatsApp the show on 07974 293 022.

Dan has two excellent scares this week. The first comes from friend of one of our staff. It is CREEPY. What starts off looking like a bad case of sleep paralysis or nightmares ends up being a very real case of an encounter with a pair of disturbing entities. Then we have a ghost story from the American Civil War era. Despite taking place over 150 years ago, it was well documented by some local newspapers. It's a very odd story that is sad and scary. Lynze has three stories this week! She shares a tale about a possible sighting of spear finger on a dark road. Then, she shares with us one of those bizarre stories about time and space not being quite right. Lastly, a military story that left some servicemen beyond scared. In honor of World Book Day, this months donation will be going to “First Book”, a non profit working to inspire young minds through books. They believe that books are a critical resource for kids but they can be scarce for those who are disadvantaged. In fact, “First Book” has discovered “book deserts” in low-income communities, often revealing just ONE book to be shared amongst 830 kids. You heard that right! Dan shares the story of the disappearance of the Grimes sisters. What makes this story suitable to be told here are a bunch of witnesses seeing these girls, after they vanished, in places they just could not be. Then we go to the Anderson Municipal Business Center in 2009. We hear details of what was supposedly seen and heard, plus an anonymous encounter story. Lynze has a more traditional haunted house story to start her half of the show. Her second story is WILD. It is the telling of an exorcism performed by a Yoruba priest!
