In this Style DNA episode I go on a style journey with the serial entrepreneur Marcia Kilgore, who founded a string of game-changing companies in the worlds of beauty and wellness…she is recognized globally as an industry leader, a business visionary, a beauty expert and an inspiration for female entrepreneurs everywhere. In 1997, Time Magazine chose a 29-year-old Kilgore as their cover star, pegging her as one of the new generation of entrepreneurs – whose hard work, ingenuity and fearlessness trumped the networking, business school bigshots. In May 2011, when Oprah Winfrey's final show aired, Oprah referred to her former facialist - Kilgore - as one of the most inspiring people she'd ever met. In 2022, The Sunday Times said her new digitally native business had ‘forever changed the way we shop for cosmetics'. In between, Kilgore had sold one business (to LVMH), another (to Alliance Boots Walgreens) and started three others. Recognised by Vogue (UK) as one of most powerful women of 2023 in their power list.I have to admit I have followed Marcia's career in awe as she built and sold Bliss Spas …followed by building and selling the upbeat, tongue in cheek Soap and Glory …and not content with those two juggernaut successes she founded the biomechanics-meets-fashion-footwear brand FitFlop (only sold over 65 million pairs of sandals, sneakers and boots worldwide to date)…and if that wasn't enough in 2016 she created my slight obsession …the fabulous buyer's club skincare and makeup brand – Beauty Pie bringing luxury beauty to a wider audience...if you don't know about it please check it out (and NO this is not an AD) I just really believe in shining a light on things I love, especially when they are created by brilliant women. In full disclosure, Marcia is a great friend and we share a crazy passion for ski touring (walking up hill with specialist skis on) however, we use this form of exercise as a great excuse to chat about everything from beauty to fashion to LIFE! As you will hopefully see and/or hear, Marcia is one of the most brilliant raconteurs ...she shares her astute observations with wit and warmth whether it is her love/hate relationship with fashion, dressing through her body building years (yes, you heard that right), the power of a great haircut, to her best shopping tip...I hope you enjoy this episode.

Marcia Kilgore was born to be an entrepreneur. "I found it very difficult to take direction from other people, … and I always found it difficult to work in places where the standards of the person who was running the place were, from my perspective, mediocre; it would frustrate me to no end," she said on the latest episode of the Glossy Podcast. Plus, her personality traits are befitting a successful entrepreneur, she said. Among them: "being super curious, being solution-oriented, loving to experiment, having solutions for any kind of hurdles or roadblocks that come along, and being tough enough to never give in." Based on her track record, she's used that to her advantage. Kilgore sold her first business, Bliss Spa, to LVMH in 1999. That was before starting the "masstige" beauty brand Soap & Glory, which she sold to Walgreens Boots Alliance in 2011. In the years since, she's launched Soaper Duper, Beauty Pie and FitFlop, the latter of which she described as a groundbreaker among footwear brands. "I had this idea for a shoe that would align your body when you walked in it and give you energy [by] rebounding the energy from the ground up," she said. "Shoes had always just been drawn [by designers]. No one was thinking about how the shoe affects the person walking in it. … [FitFlop] is really an engineering company." Kilgore said her entry into the footwear category, after building her career in beauty, made sense given that she'd been "very into reflexology" while running her spa business. As a one-time personal trainer, she was also into wellness. The shoe "connected the dots," in terms of her experience, she said. Since first launching through the retailer Sweaty Betty — through which one customer email sold 8,000 pairs of its shoes — FitFlop has taken off internationally. Now, having opened the brand's first U.S. store, in SoHo in April, Kilgore is charting its stateside growth. In this episode I get to know the incredibly successful and creative entrepreneur Marcia Kilgore.Marcia is the woman who came up with Bliss Spas, Soap and Glory, Fit Flop, Soaper Duper and most recently Beauty Pie, a company that disrupts the beauty industry by allowing us access to products almost at cost price.During the episode we talk about how Marcia came up with the concept for Beauty Pie and why she always puts the consumer at the heart of what she does. Marcia gives us a great insight into how the beauty industry works and why we often pay way above the odds. We also get to know what makes this brilliant entrepreneur tick, her relationship with clothes and why she dislikes shopping.I loved interviewing this industry icon and can't wait for you to hear her story and opinions.
Marcia Kilgore is a serial entrepreneur who has debunked mainstream beauty distribution and sales markup with her new venture, Beauty Pie. Founder of the Bliss Spa, FitFlop footwear, among others, Kilgore always ‘stepped out of line' by seeking out friends and mentors who challenged her rather than succumb to the archetype girl group while growing up in Canada. RESOURCE LINKS Twitter @marciakilgore Instagram @marcia.kilgore Blog Post: FIVE MINUTES WITH: MARCIA KILGORE Potential to Powerhouse Tracy Holland on Instagram BIO: Marcia Kilgore is a Canadian-born entrepreneur who has founded several global companies in the beauty and footwear industries. Her ventures include revolutionizing Bliss Spa, which was sold to LVMH only three years after its launch; bath, body, and cosmetics brand Soap & Glory, sold to British Drugstore giant Walgreens Boots Alliance; biomechanics-meets-fashion footwear brand FitFlop; and naturally derived bath and body product brand Soaper Duper. QUOTES: “I think one of the things if I was going to give advice to somebody coming up is, in the heat of a moment, you'll often forget that not everything needs to be responded to, and you don't have to react to everything.” -Marcia Kilgore “Keep all of your antennas open because all of those dots that you can put down are just all opportunities and your unique set of blocks. Yours will be different than anybody else's in the world. That is actually your entrepreneurial opportunity because it's your unique blueprint.” -Marcia Kilgore
Crushed? Overwhelmed? Scared? The more hardship you go through, the more resilient you become — but also, the more you are able to be open about what you are feeling, the more likely you are to connect with others — and that is what great brands are built on. It's what founder of Bliss Spas, Fitflop and now Beauty Pie, Marcia Kilgore has come to believe too, so perhaps it's little surprise she's built so many incredible businesses. Reading a letter to her younger self, Marcia speaks in great depth about emotion when recalling her life so far, and this struck a real chord with Holly. Having been ridiculed in the past for being an ‘emotional' person, Holly shares her learnings throughout her career about using emotion to achieve success. After all, why does being emotional have negative connotations? Is being an emotional being, not the greatest gift of all? Especially when marketing to women. Making connections doesn't come through being aloof, functional or formal. It's about being brave enough to bring your full self to work and sharing this with others. This truly is a lightbulb moment not to be missed, as Holly reveals why having the ability to feel, act and channel our emotions just might be the key to not only understanding yourself, but also your business and most importantly — your customers. Welcome back to Retail is Dead; a podcast started in lockdown 1.0 as our answer to all the negative press around retail. We are fed up hearing that "retail is dead", when in our opinion it's just getting exciting. Our eighth episode is all about physical vs online retail; possibly the most disruptive step to retail as we know it. However that doesn't mean that the two cannot exist together & complement one another. We talk about the brands and places that we feel are doing it well. Our guest interview is with Sam Jones, the founder of social commerce site OOOOO https://ooooo.com. Think QVC meets Tik Tok & add some fun content. Sam tells about some of his fav brands & what he thinks about the future of retail. As ever, thank you so much so much for all your support & feedback we really appreciate it. Luxury beauty doesn't have to carry a luxury price tag. That's the concept behind Beauty Pie, a fast-growing and industry-disrupting beauty brand. Beauty Pie positions itself as the “luxury Costco for beauty products.” For a monthly fee starting at $10, consumers get “backstage access” to premium products at lower costs, Rob Weston, Beauty Pie's Chief Marketing Officer, explains on this episode of The Empowered Challenger. “The very best products cost about $30 right out of the lab. The rest of it is the middleman margin — the flagship stores, the chandeliers, marble countertops — none of the stuff that makes your skin more beautiful,” says Rob.“We want to literally share the beauty pie — essentially the spoils of the beauty industry — with consumers.”When it comes to winning over customers, Rob, a marketing vet with more than 20 years of experience, says it's about embracing the conversation. Gone are the days when brands could place an ad and change consumer behavior. That's why he appreciates Beauty Pie's 14,000+ Facebook community. He acknowledges that some feedback on the page “keeps us on our toes,” but emphasizes the importance of brands and consumers having a two-way exchange. Tune in to this episode to find out how Beauty Pie is changing the market for luxury cosmetics by being less greedy than the competition, how Rob thinks about spending his marketing dollars (new customer acquisition!), as well as how the pandemic affected Beauty Pie's business and what comes next. In this episode, we're talking to Panni Morshedi, COO at Beauty Pie. She's in charge of restructuring and transforming the company's business operations, focusing on product development and technology. Former International MD at Funding Circle UK, Morshedi has extensive experience in scaling up businesses and international expansion. Panni shares how she started her career in consulting after promising her dad that she would get a ‘'real job'' once she graduated as a History major. However, after a poor review from her first 6 months as a consultant, she decided to make a move from the analytical projects to the strategic ones where her strengths lied and became the top billing consultant within 2 years. Morshedi also discussed some of the sliding door moments that she leaned into (such as getting rejected from a banking job) that changed her future for the better. At the end of the episode, we talk about the biggest lessons and takeaways from her career that will contribute to her legacy. Most of us would be content to have one big hit in our lifetimes, and to milk it for all its worth. But Marcia Kilgore has had four resounding successes with four separate businesses — Bliss, a range of New York beauty spas, of which she sold a majority stake to LVMH for a reported $30million in 2004; Soap & Glory, a toiletries brand thar Boots bought acquired in 2014 and has hundreds of millions in annual revenues; FitFlop, the ingenious ergonomic footwear brand; and now Beauty Pie, a subscription cosmetics service which may well turn the beauty industry on its head. In a fascinating and highly enjoyable episode, we discussed the unique atmosphere of New York in the late 1980s; why bullshit is the enemy of success; and how the opposite of a good idea is almost always a great idea.

Members pay a monthly membership fee for backdoor access to some of the world’s best fragrance, skin care and cosmetics factories, many of which supply big-name luxury brands that go on to charge sky-high prices once they are stamped with their logo. By cutting out things like fancy packaging, celebrity endorsements and expensive ad campaigns, Beauty Pie is able to side step the huge mark up. In this episode, Marcia shares how she came up with the innovative concept, how she sources the products all over the world and her 5 absolute favorite "desert island" skincare and anti-aging products. Plus why at 52, after having sold one of her companies (Bliss Spa) to LVMH for millions, the mom of two continues to push herself into the entrepreneurial arena. If you want to give Beauty Pie a whirl, Marcia has offered a free one month membership to SheSez listeners. Just use the code SHESEZ.

What is the secret to entrepreneurial success after success - ‘failure’ says Marcia. From growing up in Canada and losing her father at just 11 years old, Marcia Kilgore talks to Holly about her journey to becoming a serial entrepreneur. Hailed by Oprah as one of the most inspiring women she has ever met, this episode follows Marcia’s incredible story. Arriving in New York aged just 18, a twist of fate led to her building her first business Bliss, a celebrity soaked spa. But Marcia didn’t stop there and has gone on to become one of the most successful female entrepreneurs of our time. Building five hugely successful companies, including FitFlop and Beauty Pie, in just two decades, Marcia’s drive, vision and innovation have delivered products that women had an instant affinity with and that have changed the face of the beauty industry forever. Challenging the status quo, democratising beauty and a personal heroine for Holly, this conversation is truly inspiring. Marcia Kilgore is a serial entrepreneur in the truest sense of the term. Not content with creating just one globally renowned brand, Marcia is responsible for Bliss Spa, Soap and Glory, FitFlop, Soaper Duper and now Beauty Pie. But how did she become Queen of Startups?Bliss Spa, her first startup in NYC, saw her give facials to Demi Moore, Courtney Love, Christy Turlington, Bette Midler and Calvin Klein to name drop but a few regulars. She sold this to world leader in luxury products LVMH, before turning her hand a couple of years later to Soap and Glory. From there she founded FitFlop, Soaper Duper and now Beauty Pie, an exclusive buyers club for luxury beauty products, without the luxury beauty bullshit.“I love the part of a business where you're really struggling to figure something out and it's really hard and you're solving real problems and really moving that dial every day and able to create new things. But when it sort of gets masked out and it's not about creating new things for customers anymore and you get too far away from it and it's charts and spreadsheets, that's not really my thing.”Rather than discuss just one of these behemoths, Marcia is incredibly candid about all of them, talking about the genesis of each, her entrepreneurial journey and the mistakes she’s made along the way. “There usually comes a time in my businesses where people say, ‘Oh, you've got to stop doing customer interface, you've got to stop doing the copywriting, you’ve got to stop doing the naming of the products’. And actually, that's what I do better than other people. So I shouldn't stop doing the part that I love doing. That was, I suppose the mistake that I've made in the past.”We chat about:What set her on her entrepreneurial pathThat urban legend about Jean-Claude Van DammeHow LVMH wooed herStopping your brand getting watered downLearning to deal with the big companiesLifting the lid on the beauty industry Want to receive our podcast on a weekly basis? When Tony Xu started DoorDash in 2013, he wanted to help local restaurants stay afloat by introducing them to online delivery. Today, his quest remains the same, now that DoorDash has become an essential business during the COVID-19 pandemic. Marcia Kilgore's footwear brand, FitFlop, is experiencing a downturn in sales as retail stores stay closed. However, Beauty Pie – her direct-to-consumer cosmetics brand – is thriving as the beauty industry goes digital. These conversations are excerpts from our How I Built Resilience series, where Guy talks online with founders and entrepreneurs about how they're navigating these turbulent times.

Marcia Kilgore, one of the world's top beauty entrepreneurs, founded Bliss Spa, FitFlop, and Soap & Glory. Today, the concept of luxury has changed - substance before status, experience not ownership - and, Marcia's new venture, Beauty Pie, is changing the face of luxury products and undermining the old guard. Serial entrepreneur Marcia Kilgore has no trouble calling out ineffective or unfair practices in beauty. "When you buy a $99 cream, you're probably getting something that's worth about $6," said the Bliss and Soap & Glory founder. Tired of the markup that working with a retailer requires, Kilgore launched her latest project, Beauty Pie, a direct-to-consumer membership service. Customers pay monthly fees that then go toward buying products at prices much closer to manufacturing costs. "We're charging one-tenth of what a normal beauty company would charge," she said. Kilgore joined the Glossy Beauty podcast to talk about her previous experience at Bliss and Soap & Glory, the typical Beauty Pie customer and the road to profitability.

After high school, Marcia Kilgore moved to New York City with $300 in her pocket and no real plan. One step at a time, she became a successful serial entrepreneur. First, she used her high school bodybuilding experience to find work as a personal trainer. Then she taught herself to give facials, and eventually started her own spa and skincare line, Bliss. The spa became so popular that it was booked months in advance with a list of celebrity clientele. After selling her shares in Bliss, Marcia went on to start four new successful companies: Soap & Glory, FitFlop, Soaper Duper, and Beauty Pie. PLUS in our postscript "How You Built That," we check back with Emma Cohen, who explains how she helped develop and market The Final Straw, a collapsible metal drinking straw.
This episode should come with a WARNING, you'll probably learn more here about how to run successful businesses than ever before... and this was a delight to record too. That's because today we are talking Marcia Kilgore, the super successful serial entrepreneur of brands like Bliss Spa, Bliss Labs, Soap & Glory, Fit Flop and the revolutionary new Beauty Pie. We can clearly see she is doing everything right. We find out what? Originally from the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, she grew up with very humble beginnings. She and her sisters suffered a sad loss of her father around the age of 11, causing the family to further struggle. But her mum instilled the rule of never complaining - about anything! She'd boldly explain “There are people out in the world that have no legs and have it way harder than you”. With this her mum instilled the practice of gratitude and a friend of the family also brought her attention to the importance of discipline, when he introduced her to his gym. So from an early age, these life lessons kept her feet planted safely on the ground. “By the time you turn 18 you are your own thoughts, grab a book and take responsibility for them” - Marcia [57:28] She applied to Study in New York when she was 16, and on arriving in the US her plans fell through, so she found herself on the streets of NYC needing to earn money fast. Already being a regular at the gym, she used her previous bodybuilding competition experience to land herself a personal training role at a fairly prolific gym, which put her in front of many minor celebrities. Including her clients Douglas Keeve and his then partner Isaac Mizrahi of fashion fame. This opened the door to access super models who she'd eventually practice her new hobby on, having recently trained in facial therapy.Word spread fast and at the heart of it was Marcia's politeness, kindness, warm and friendly service. She sums it up by saying it's all about delivering the goods and being positive. Oh and the details, people come because of the smallest details. She write personal thank you notes for every client she had. “It's up to you to deliver the goods, don't be half assed about anything, be full assed. Did you ever had a hair colourist call you the next day and ask how your hair is doing? Well if you did, do you think you'd every go elsewhere ever again?” - Marcia [32:55] She quickly went from a small one room studio with film stars like Uma Thurman sitting and waiting in the halls, to a 3 room studio, then a 10 room and finally a 24 room studio with a booked up schedule 18 months in advance. They'd always be cultural icons like Oprah Winfry, Madonna, Calvin klein and Courtney Love, amongst many more, as regular clients. Then after a decade of building this business from the ground up she sold a stake in the company to french company LVMH, which allowed her to expand into skincare products, creating Bliss labs. Countless skincare products later, under a few different umbrellas like Soap & Glory, Soaper Dooper, Marcia shares her secrets to getting your products stocked on premium shelves, from Harvey Nichols to Douglas and around the world. Her's what else we chat about: Taking responsibility for your own mindset and actions The power of reframing - “you say she's not interested, I say she was on vacation and missed it” How business is not just about the details, business is THE details Hobbies can grow into big businesses very fast The markup of most beauty brands and not putting the customer first The value revolution in her new company Beauty Pie Avoid defensiveness at all costs The early bad experiences that shaped Marcia's entire business strategy. You can find out more about Marcia here: Instagram Beautypie.com Twitter Books here: The Work… of Byron Katie, An Introduction. A serial entrepreneur, with five multi-million pound businesses under her belt, you more than likely have a few of Marcia Kilgore’s brands’ beauty products on your bathroom shelf. With just $300 in her pocket, Kilgore moved from Canada to join her sister in New York, and soon found herself giving facials to friends in a bit to pay off her student debts. But it wasn’t long before, aged 26, she launched the now world-famous Bliss Spa – endorsed by the likes of Oprah, Madonna and Demi Moore. But selling Bliss for a reported $50million years later was just the beginning for Kilgore – who has spent the last two decades launching global brands Soap & Glory, FitFlop, Soaper Duper and, her most recent, Beauty Pie; the brand heralded for ‘driving a truck through’ the luxury cosmetic industry. Listen to her Success Stories now to discover how the beauty guru built her businesses, what’s next for her new venture and the secret to how she always knows what women need (before they even know they need it). PLUS for our postscript "How You Built That," how Steve Kral has created a successful business fulfilling a very particular niche: selling TV remotes for outdated television sets.
