Yoga Nidra, known as the 'Yogic sleep' is an ancient practice that invokes deep relaxation and calmness of the heart, mind and soul. In our latest podcast episode with Kamini Desai we have been introduced to the beautiful art of Yoga Nidra and what makes it a spiritual practice. As the year is drawing to a close we are offered with opportunities to stand still and allow ourselves the space for contemplation of what was, what is and what will become. The benefits of Yoga Nidra Yoga Nidra is a wonderful tool to support us through these times of digestion and processing. Originally a nyasa meditation practice (the practice of moving of consciousness through the different body parts retaining prana) from traditional Tantra Yoga, it has profound healing effects on the body, mind, and soul. Yoga Nidra guides practitioners into a deep state of relaxation putting the practitioner into a space between the alpha and theta state. This allows us to rest in deep relaxation, a state between waking and sleeping, a state that calms the autonomic nervous system that we need to regulate our body's processes and that take place without a conscious effort. In addition, it puts the parasympathetic nervous system into a deeper resting state. A calm nervous system is the state we want to act and live from at all times. Yoga Nidra offers a great variety of benefits that we have listed for you below: Improved thought patterns and reduced stress Enhanced cognitive performance and memory Improved self-esteem and confidence Better sleep Improved waking mindfulness Diminishes symptoms of anxiety and depression Treats chronic pain and post-traumatic stress disorder Lowers blood pressure Reduces addiction Enhances creativity Reduces PTSD Strengthens immune system Recharges vital energy Strengthens the endocrine system Reduces the need for pain medication ...and many many more Weaving Yoga Nidra into our every day over a certain period of time helps us greatly to meet the external and internal challenges of life from a space of calm, hope and ease, allowing us to look at the bright side of life rather than through a sense of stress and contraction. Kamini Desai is offering us a beautiful Yoga Nidra practice to enjoy in the safe environment of your home. Enjoy!

Episode Highlights Yoga Nidra’s Role in the Time of COVID-19 When we encounter something, we see it as either an obstacle or an opportunity. It’s an opportunity to assess the things you exert your energy on. It's the time to face our aloneness and heal it from within. What Is Yoga Nidra? Yoga Nidra is a sleeping meditation technique riding on the biology of your body. It rests in the biological gap between us and our thoughts when we sleep. The value and benefits of Yoga Nidra are for everybody. Its principle is that the less you do, the more shifts happen. Does Sleeping Hinder Productivity? Overdoing is part of our culture. Society rewards people who are stressed and overwhelmed. People often don’t get rewarded when they take care of themselves, so they dismiss resting and the non-doing aspects of life. The more you rest, the more currency you have to work. Yoga Nidra as a Spiritual Practice Yoga Nidra reminds people of an abiding eternal awareness. It helps you find peace within yourself, which you can access anytime. Especially in the time of a pandemic, it’s vital to find calm spaces that you can go to when you need it. Benefits of Yoga Nidra Yoga Nidra provides support to people on medication, for instance. Because it releases serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphins naturally, you feel an intense sense of well-being. How Yoga Nidra Happens in the Heart The heart is the primary conduit or collector of the energy of the source (called Prana or Chi). The heart channels the energy into your body and returns it to the source. Therefore, Yoga Nidra is about reconnecting with your source nature. Restoration Through Yoga Nidra Yoga teachers are only human, so they also feel depleted. It allows us to recognize the source and state of our exhaustion and understand what to do. The sooner we catch the feelings of depletion, the sooner we can put ourselves back on track. The Science of Yoga Nidra The amount of stress hormones released during a prolonged state of stress affects our brains. The amygdala or the fear center of our brain becomes more activated. Also, our prefrontal cortex becomes thinner. When our prefrontal cortex isn’t strong enough, our insecurities and worries can run our lives. Within 11 hours of Yoga Nidra practice, the prefrontal cortex thickens considerably. In return, it increases your ability to manage stress. Duration of Yoga Nidra Practice Practicing Yoga Nidra is more about consistency. You can do it 5 days a week for 20 to 40 minutes. In as little as 8 weeks, Yoga Nidra mindfulness techniques can increase the size of the hippocampus. Start by doing 3 months consistently, and you can feel your body craving and undergoing changes. On Unprocessed Emotions Incomplete events or unprocessed emotions are undischarged energy. It can run through your nervous system as if the event is still in play. Yoga Nidra processes undischarged energy by removing the resistances and allowing energy to move gently. Visceral Experiences During Yoga Nidra Yoga Nidra provides a deeper state than sleep, and it gives you a chance to release and process the things you repressed. Unconscious things affect our conscious mind and behavior. Advice for Students Who are Afraid of Going Back and Practicing Students must first understand that Yoga Nidra is a powerful healing modality. They can talk to their body about what they’re ready to release. Students with trauma and PTSD can practice Yoga Nidra while sitting down to slow down the process. On Sankalpa & Setting Intentions Yoga Nidra touches the core of our consciousness. However, if there are deeply seated beliefs or impressions, there would be an inner conflict. Yoga Nidra is designed to work backward through the core of your consciousness. Sankalpa are like seeds planted to create positivity in your thoughts. Discovering Yoga Nidra Have someone who resonates with you to guide you. Do it when you can. Advice for People with Strong Rooted Principles Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic This pandemic is the time to remember what we have received and practice it. You know what to do, and you know the practices. If you pay attention to something, that’s where your energy flows. 5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode “Anything that comes across our path, we can see it as an obstacle or an opportunity.” “We tend to dismiss the rest, restoration, the non-doing aspects of life in favor of what's going to get us the acknowledgment.” “The more that you relax, the more currency you have to do.” “People will say, ‘Oh, my god, Yoga Nidra does terrible things.’ It's not doing terrible things. It's clearing out what was already in there.” “Where attention goes, energy flows.” About Kamini Dr. Kamini Desai has created a unique collection of teachings merging the ancient wisdom of yoga with modern psychology for 25 years. This Yoga Nidra is from Kamini Desai, PHD Yoga Nidra; The Art of Transformational Sleep When to practice: Whenever you can. In the morning as soon as you get up, either put headphones on if you share the room with someone or move to a room where you can practice undisturbed. You can practice in the late afternoon around when your blood sugar drops as a little battery re-charge. Yoga Nidra will help restore your energy and focus the mind for remaining activities during the day. You can also practice in the evening before bed. This will help release the activity in the body, the mind and the emotional body from the days experiences. Yoga Nidra can provide a deeper and more restful sleep resulting in a rejuvenating slumber that will help you feel more awake the following day. How to practice: Ideally make a flat bed on the floor with an extra cushion under the body and head as the weight after time will be demanding for the body. I would suggest if you have a wool blanket or sheepskin which will help distribute and regulate temperature. Try not to use your bed, as you associate your bed to sleep. Elevate the head a bit, however keep the face parallel to the floor. When the head is propped up where the face is perpendicular to the floor, it is very stimulating for the nervous system and mind. You can place a bolster under the knees and or both knees and feet. Use a blanket to to keep warm. Palms facing up with nothing touching them. If you use an eye pillow, place it more on the brow rather than the eyeballs as the weight over time can be uncomfortable. If you have low blood pressure, feel dizzy or keep falling asleep and snoring I would suggest elevating the upper body with pillows or props of your choice. Falling asleep: If you fall asleep, respect the response to the Yoga nidra and support your exhaustion, immune and nervous system and allow yourself to go ahead and sleep. If you want to start to try to stay awake, try setting an intention before practice in which you state aloud "I resolve to remain awake". If you find yourself chronically falling asleep, I suggest bending your elbow to a 90 degree angle beside the body. If you fall asleep the hand will fall and you will usually awake. Propping yourself up, sitting against a wall or chair may help. However, rest assured that if you do fall asleep there is a deep psyche that listens. Your body listens. You will receive what you need and the words offered will have a deep impact. It just takes practice to dive deep into the depths of consciousness and be awake in effortless rest. For more in-depth understanding and exploration of Yoga Nidra seek out Kamini Desai, PHD book Yoga Nidra; The Art of Transformational Sleep in paper back or audible. Her book is an excellent resource. This Yoga Nidra recorded is her script written named The Integrative Amrit Method of Yoga Nidra for Health and Healing.
Our guest on the show today, and what she teaches, has had a profound effect on our host, Michelle Bosch. In Michelle’s journey to find some physical relief from the stress of being a real estate investor, a wife, and a mom, she also found great peace, focus, and rest as a result of practicing yoga nidra. She even ties this practice to opening up streams of abundance in both life and business. Michelle’s conversation in this episode is with Kamini Desai, the executive director at the Amrit Institute and an expert in transformational sleep and yoga nidra. Having been awarded the title of Yoga Shwari, a yoga master with the ability to bring ancient illumination to the challenges of the human experience, she’s worked with well known companies such as Sony, Mars, Kelloggs, The Department of Corrections, and The Department of Netherlands Government. As we learn through Kamini, the practice of yoga nidra is a form of relaxation that uses the biology of our bodies to enter a natural state of meditation. During the process, our minds follow our brain waves towards sleep. Our state of mind becomes further and further away from our thoughts which leaves us in a transitional, twilight zone. As Kamini explains, this phase allows our parasympathetic system to become more balanced with our sympathetic system giving our bodies a major release from tension and stress. Not only does Kamini give you insight on how yoga nidra works on a surface level, but you will learn what this means for your bodies on a biochemical level. Through releasing hormones and neurotransmitters in our prefrontal cortex, our moods improve, immune systems strengthen, and minds become clearer. This episode is full of both the science of yoga nidra, and the “why” behind a practice like this for all driven women who wear many hats. It’s good for the guys too! Listen in to hear how Jack, Michelle’s husband and business partner, uses yoga nidra in his own way! Get ready to shake your yoga nidra pompoms! On this episode, Rest Sisters from the Daring to Rest Academy join me to share our key takeaways from The First International Yoga Nidra Conference. We discuss the theme of unity that pervaded the conference despite the different lineages of yoga nidra represented and reflect on what is a feminine approach to yoga nidra, how we express this in Daring to Rest programs, and Uma Dinsmore-Tuli's permission to be ‘wild within the structure' of the practice. I ask about the network versus hierarchy debate posed at the conference, and we offer insight on the idea of post-lineage yoga nidra that allows us to play inside the framework. We delve into Kamini Desai's metaphor around being a container for what is rather than identifying with what comes and goes—and describe how yoga nidra effectively reorganizes our relationship with our emotions. We explored concepts from the many yoga nidra rock star teachers we learned from including Indu Arora's view of yoga nidra as ‘the sleep of realization' and deep truth. Listen in for insight around emphasizing invitation and choice in the language of yoga nidra and learn how each Rest Sister integrated her profound feelings of gratitude, balance and belonging into life after the conference. After you listen, tell us your takeaways in the comments below or on social media.
