The Living Process episode 27 with guest Jonathan Foust Energy Flow and The Pathless Path I'm very happy to welcome Jonathan Foust to this episode. Jonathan has a lifetime of spiritual practice to share. He has dedicated his life to yoga practices, Buddhist meditation, mindfulness practice as well as Focusing. In our conversation we touch on how Focusing fits with these various somatic practices and the spiritual understanding of energy flow in the body. Jonathan shares his own personal journey and questions such as what body are we working with and what does it mean to heal? We discuss Focusing as pointing to the pathless path and how close it is to the RAIN model as used by Jonathan and his wife, meditation teacher Tara Brach. We wondered whether therapy really offers much more than these other effective and compassionate approaches. Jonathan offers a weekly talk on his website and is working on guidance for being with physical pain. We end by talking a bit about how to respond to the uncertainties and suffering in contemporary societies.  Jonathan Foust, MA, CSA, is a guiding teacher with the Insight Meditation Community of Washington and a founder of the Meditation Teacher Training Institute in Washington. A senior teacher and former president of Kripalu Center, he leads retreats, trainings and classes around the United States and works individually with those interested in healing and spiritual awakening. He's trained in a wide range of healing modalities, including Focusing (Certified Trainer), Kripalu Yoga, Trager Work, Cranio-Sacral, Reiki and Polarity Therapies to name a few. He has a Master of Arts in Education and certifications in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Focusing and Dharma practices. He has spent decades in Ashram and spiritual communities and now offers body-centred inquiry on retreats and intensives. For many years he has lived near Washington DC with his wife psychologist and mediation teacher Tara Brach.  Episode 27, The Living Process with guest Jonathan Foust: https://youtu.be/Fz19hg-4oVc The Living Process - all episodes and podcast links: https://www.londonfocusing.com/the-living-process/ Greg's YouTube video channel: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLC0TgN6iVu3n9d9q2l43z1xBMYY3p9FQL The Living Process on the FOT Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLx3FqA70kQWuHCHmEiZnkn1VcrRIPbcvk For more information on Jonathan, his talks and retreats, see his website and YouTube videos available at: https://www.jonathanfoust.com #somaticexperience  #trauma  #Focusing  #Gendlin  #Bodytherapy  #Zen  #Experientialpractice  #bodymind   #thelivingprocess #buddhist  #psychotherapy #mindfulness #jonathanfoust

Virginia Schenck, known by the stage name VA, is an accomplished international vocal artist and jazz performer, utilizing both straight-ahead, spoken word, and free improvisation. VA is an imaginative vocalist with a broad stylistic reach. She can soothe her audience with a beautiful ballad, invigorate them with a re-imagined standard and challenge them with a powerful blast of free improvisation. Yet all of these aspects exist within one singular and unique voice. VA often spices up her shows with world music influences from her own vocal exploration and CircleSinging, which she studied under the legendary Bobby McFerrin. Last year, she was honored to perform with McFerrin as part of his Atlanta, Ga., CircleSongs concert. In addition to performing with him, Virginia was handpicked to put together the exclusive 12-voice ensemble that led McFerrin's CircleSongs for the concert. Read more about that here. A Florida native, VA came to Georgia after graduating from Florida State University. While her degree was in Music Therapy, she studied jazz piano, voice and dance. She started singing jazz gigs while in school and continued to perform after she launched her music therapy career. Her love of jazz was enriched through a friendship with drummer Jaimoe of the Allman Brothers Band. Performing regularly in Atlanta’s top jazz and music venues, her recent appearances also include New York & Seattle for a play with totally improvised music, “The Gift”, with aerial dancers at The Robert Mondavi Ctr/UC-Davis, St Patrick’s Cathedral/Dublin, IR, Chartres Cathedral/France, Kripalu Yoga and Retreat Center, and Rome, Italy. VA has released three critically acclaimed albums, which showcase her artistry. Her debut CD, VA (2012), generated serious buzz with jazz fans, immediately receiving global airplay with such artists as 2012 NEA Jazz Master, Sheila Jordan, who exclaimed, “Wonderful CD… Wonderful singer!” Her CDs, Interior Notions (2015) and Aminata Moseka: an Abbey Lincoln Tribute (2017) have followed similar suit. Her fourth album, Battle Cry (2020), is set for release on January 3. In this episode, I speak with Amy Wright Glenn about what it means to live in a grief-denying, grief-phobic culture, and steps we can take to work toward shifting this culture. We also talk about grieving losses that don't involve a physical death (e.g., estrangements, challenging relationships with caregivers, loved ones with mental health challenges, visions for who we think we might have been had it not been for trauma and other adverse life experiences) and how these losses can get encoded in our memories and stored in our bodies even if they occurred at an early age. We also discuss how our early models for relating to emotions affect our own processing of grief and relationship to grieving. We also talk about the intersection of grief and gratitude, and how the two can co-exist without gratitude bypassing or minimizing the genuine pain of grief and loss. In Puja Yoga we acknowledge the divinity within each of us. Along with the many physical benefits of the practice, we also consciously encounter and nurture the flame of love and compassion within. We honor through yogic practice the divinity inside and all around us. Puja Yoga supports us in connecting with the divinity we all carry and through our practice we deepen our connections to inner peace, health, compassion, understanding, and love. Puja is a common name in India. This spiritual name was given to me when I lived at the Kripalu Center in Western Massachusetts, USA in the 1980's (at the time if was an Ashram or Spiritual Community). Puja means seeing the highest (the divine) in everything.  In “The Puja Ceremony” the elements or earth, water, fire, air and space/ether are offered to the divinity within and around us. Traditionally rice, water, candles, flower petals and incense respectively are used to represent these elements. These are offered to a specific deity, incarnation of the divine or to the divinity in any person sprinkling each “element” in turn over a photo, portrait, living person, spiritual teacher or beloved. Valeria interviews Sue Flamm the author of Restorative Yoga: with Assists A Manual for Teachers and Students of Yoga ( in English and Spanish.) A work that guides us to master the art of teaching and practicing Restorative Yoga and deep relaxation. A recourse for yoga teacher training programs, seasoned teachers and students of yoga. Includes a chapter on postures for pregnancy from conception to after birth and sequences for a variety of conditions. Includes over 100 photos to help you to understand each posture and a set of simple yet profound assists to take your students into deeper relaxation. With decades of teaching yoga to every level of practitioner in the US, Guatemala, Mexico, Cuba, Europe, South Africa and China, Sue Flamm (Puja) delivers a clear, compassionate training manual to deepen your understanding of Restorative Yoga. Puja Sue Flamm (Susana), 500 ERYT, Best Selling Author, Yoga Teacher Trainer, and Certified Massage Therapist, has been teaching yoga for more than 30 years. She has led numerous trainings, retreats, workshops, and thousands of classes around the world. She has owned two yoga centers, managed a third and managed a pre post natal learning center in the northeast of the USA. My guest this week is Solan McClean, author of the book Driving Into the Now: PRND. I enjoyed reading this book about using driving as a vehicle (ha ha) to practice mindful awareness, and I wrote a blog about it on Psychology Today (Can You Meditate While Driving?). It was great to dive deeper with Solan and explore what this practice can offer. We talked about: The difference between mindless and mindful driving Why it’s safe to practice mindfulness when driving “PRND” (Park – Reverse – Neutral – Drive) as a reminder to practice mindful driving: Practice, Relax, (Bring Yourself Into the) Now, Drive Taking the serenity from mindful driving with us once we reach our destination Positive changes associated with the PRND method How to bring PRND practice out of the car Why simply being in the present moment is so gratifying Acceptance as a part of mindful driving How having toxic feelings is largely a choice Finding deep connection to life in our simple, everyday tasks The many benefits of counting our blessings What drew Solan to mindfulness Our nature as spiritual beings Using our intellect as a tool, without mistaking it for the full experience of who we are How our spirits dwell only in the now The close connection between being in the present and experiencing love Solan McClean is active in many areas of self-realization, including Zen meditation, Vipassana meditation, Kripalu Yoga, Dharma Yoga, and of course mindful driving. He’s been featured in numerous blogs and podcast speaking on the subject of mindfulness and meditation. Solan is passionate about helping others with the anxiety of everyday life, and especially the negative experiences that most of us encounter on the road. By discovering the Truth through present moment awareness, as he and I talk about in this episode, Solan seeks to help advance the evolution of mankind, and help others to become intelligent agents of the ever-advancing creation. Through his PRND method, he believes that both our roads and our world can know truth, compassion, and serenity. Find Solan online at his website and on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

Download Episode! Lovely radicals, it's podcast time! In today's episode of the "Life. Unrestricted." podcast, I get to talk to Dana Sturtevant from Portland, Oregon. Dana is a trainer, mentor, Kripalu Yoga teacher, and Registered Dietitian specializing in Health at Every Size (HAES) and Intuitive Eating. She is the co-founder of "Be Nourished", a revolutionary business helping people heal body dissatisfaction and reclaim body trust. In her work, Dana loves to incorporate mindfulness and self-compassion practices, and she is specialized in Motivational Interviewing techniques. She has facilitated more than 300 workshops throughout the United States for health care providers looking to enhance their skills in behavior-change counseling, and her work has been published in various media outlets. You'll hear Dana talk about: – How lucky she was to be able to grow up in a household where there were no diets, body shaming or any sort of hyper-focus on "healthy eating" – When and why she became self-conscious about her shape and size – Why she went into the field of nutrition – What she found out about her younger self from reading her own letters to her late grandmother – What she experienced in her previous work as a "weight management" dietitian – Why that work started to feel deeply unethical for her – Why living a free, flexible life and weight-suppression don’t go together – How our inner "trance of unworthiness" drives us to keep abandoning ourselves – Why no amount of weight-loss will improve how you feel about yourself, and why feeling worthy and confident really is an inside job unrelated to weight – The importance of recognizing the difference between "fitting in" and feeling a sense of "belonging" – How her and Hilary’s clients often react when they first hear their message – Why it is so hard to claim something (that we KNOW is true) for ourselves – Why this current "health-ism" (hyper-focus on "having to be healthy, or else it’s our own fault") is really about money – Why so many people, including health-care providers, are in denial about "prescribing diets" – Why we are often tricked into believing "well, this is not a diet, this is only a lifestyle change" – What happens when one coping mechanisms is being forcefully removed without working on the underlying issue – Why compulsive exercise always points to a complicated relationship with food/weight – Why it’s totally ok that not all people are athletes – Why today’s "gym-culture" is ruining a healthy relationship to movement for most people – Why nobody can tell you what your body needs, and why there IS no black or white strategy that works – Why it is always wise to be suspicious of people who claim to "have found the true way to health/fitness/weight-loss", especially when they are trying to sell said truth – Why it takes some time (and effort) to heal the "dieting mind" – Why the healing process really only works when we put concerns about weight on the back burner – Why most people have to hit "diet bottom" to kick-start the healing process – What needs to be grieved when we find the courage to step into our fears and work towards freedom – Why diet-talk is basically nothing else but women keeping up their own oppression – Why the fear of a particular food is worse for your body than the actual food – Why the moralization of food is particularly dangerous for people – Why "going Paleo" and "going gluten-free" (except for the 1% of the population who actually has celiac disease) and "going vegan" are fads, too – How absurd the whole "nutritionism" in the world looks when we zoom out for a minute to really look at all the contradicting advice out there – What real success looks like for clients of "Be Nourished" – Why rules are the problem, and not – as we might think – the solution – How "full permission to eat" looks like and why it is the solution to stop the diet-binge-cycle – Why it is important to process and release the anger that we have directed inwards for so long – Why it is important to realize that it is not your fault that you have a complicated relationship to food (Dana’s dog agrees strongly here) – How "Be Nourished" helps private clients as well as health care providers get rid of weight-bias... ...
