“If I can but reach that bridge,” thought Ichabod, “I am safe.” This is the story of schoolmaster Ichabod Crane and his ride home after an evening spent trying to woo Katrina Van Tassel at a party hosted by her father at their idyllic farm in rural New York. It's a terrifying ride–perhaps as deadly as Ichabod's pursuer is headless. For this third HTDS Halloween special, we “rewind” to one of the oldest ghost stories in American lore: Washington Irving's “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Starting with a headless Germanic tale, we'll hear some of the literary history behind the stories of headless riders on horseback; get a brief bio on this year's featured author; and then … we'll see if we can reach that covered bridge before it's too late. They Both Die At The End by Adam Silvera is a story about two boys who received a call from an organization called the death cast and were notified that today would be the day they die, so they need to fit a lifetime in 24 hours or less. This story includes romance, adventure, and excitement and is a very nice read, although the ending may ruin your day. The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes is a book about a smart girl named Avery Grambs who was left a giant fortune of 46.2 billion dollars from a man named Tobias hawthorn, but here is the catch she has never met him, or has she? She must answer the mystery that Tobias left for her and his 4 grandsons to figure out why he left her his fortune, all while dealing with the issues this inheritance has made her face. This book includes romance, adventure, mystery solving, and a few riddles, once it draws you into its pages it may not let you escape until you have finished the series and are left reeling for meaning for life. Raising The Horseman by Serena Valentino is a novel about a young girl named Katrina Van Tassel, she loves books and doesn't believe in ghosts or the story her town of Sleepy Hollow treasures. The night of the first Katrina's rest, she gets dragged to a party and makes a new friend before attempting to arise her long dead relative when the ghost of the headless horseman seems to be summoned. She needs to reexamine what she has believed in for so long, while reading the diary of the first Katrina, only to learn their lives were very similar. This story includes romance, fun, friendship along with some toxic relationships, and a self discovery. All of these books have LGBTQ+ representation and 2/3 have a fair amount of feminism, I hope you enjoy them as much as I did and have a good day or night.

A tale from The House of Apprehension. This short story tells the tale of a small town schoolmaster named Ichabod Crane whose unsuccessful attempts to woo a beautiful young heiress named Katrina Van Tassel end in a most hair-raising journey home. I have abridged the tale somewhat to focus on Ichabod's flight through a local wood, supposedly haunted by the spectre of a headless horseman. This is a snippet from Breaking Walls Episode 95: Radio And The Classroom (1939 - 1965) _________________________ As the end of Summer turns into Autumn, the weather cools off and Friday night football games, dances, and eventually All Hallow's Eve become part of school functions. In 1820 Washington Irving, one of America's first great novelists, penned a short story called “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” The tale is about a schoolmaster Ichabod Crane, a superstitious outsider. He's competing for the hand of Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter and sole child of a wealthy farmer. Sleepy Hollow is a small village in Westchester County, just north of New York City. This aired on NBC's American Novels from WMAQ Chicago on Friday September 19th, 1947 at 10:30PM. Part of a larger series called The World's Great Novels, the concept was born from the NBC Education Department. Ichabod Crane sees marriage to Katrina as path to wealth, but his rival Van Brunt plays a series of pranks on the jittery schoolmaster, and tensions among the three are soon brought to a head. On a cool autumn night, Crane attends a harvest party at the Van Tassels' homestead. He dances, feasts, and listens to ghostly legends told by Van Brunt and the locals. He leaves after failing to secure Katrina's hand, riding his horse through woodland between the Homestead and Sleepy Hollow. It was renamed The NBC University Theater of the Air, and production moved to Hollywood on July 30th, 1948, The series was offered as a college accredited course and was considered one of the most ambitious radio programs on the air. It now featured intermission commentary from luminaries and won a Peabody Award before going off the air on February 14th, 1951.

We're visiting New York this week and traveling all the way back to the year 1790. The story takes place in Tarrytown or Sleepy Hollow as it's better known. We meet the schoolmaster, Ichabod Crane and follow him on his adventure trying to marry the heiress, Katrina Van Tassel, and instead meets a local ghost, The Headless Horseman. Rosa will recap the original story, in words that are a little easier to understand as compared to Washington Irving's original text. Then she'll tell what parts of the story are taken from actual events and real people. Tonights Drink: Strainge Beast Hard Kombucha --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ripplepod/message

In our last encounter with our protagonist Ichabod Crane, we find him summarily compared to his rival Brom Bones, a rough and rustic practical joker—both of them competing for the hand of the somewhat compelling Katrina Van Tassel, daughter of a well-to-do farmer. As our story reopens, we find Ichabod wending his way through a rich autumn landscape en route to the Van Tassels' for an evening of celebration and perhaps – perhaps not - a little romance.
