What's up, dudes? Remember Band Aid and its mega-hit “Do They Know It's Christmas?” It spun off countless relief efforts, including Carol Aid 1985. Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas introduced me to this concert, and he's here to talk about its MTV and Music Box broadcast!Carol Aid was a famine relief concert held at the club Heaven in London. MTV and Music Box aired a cut down version, leaving out several acts. In fact, the likes of Magnum, Captain Sensible, and Miquel Brown (to name a few) were cut for time. It's quite unbelievable.Cliff Richard kicked off the broadcast version with “Another Christmas Day,” while John Parr sang “Once in Royal David's City.” Meanwhile, the Fixx pressed for donations and sang “Peace On Earth,” a hidden track from their following album. Subsequently, the event ended with the entire roster singing “Do They Know It's Christmas?” rather heartily.Chris De Burgh? Check. Anita Harris? She was there. Toto Coelo and the Flying Pickets? Got them too, though we have no idea what they sang. So grab your oversized checks, put on your red beret, and jam out to “Carols from Heaven” and Carol Aid 1985!Sounds of ChristmasFB: @SOCMusicTwitter: @SOCMusicIG: @socmusicGive us a buzz! What's up, dudes? I've got Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas and Scott Leopold from Holly Jolly X'masu here to talk the folksy prog rock band Jethro Tull. We break down two of the Christmas songs by Jethro Tull: “Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow” and “Another Christmas Song.” The British rock band formed in Blackpool, Lancashire in 1967. Their music is marked by the initially soulful and bluesy, and later expressively idiosyncratic, vocal style and unique lead flute work of frontman Ian Anderson, and their notable guitarist Martin Barre. Of course, their songs feature unusual and often complex construction, incorporating elements of classical and celtic folk music, as well as art rock and alternative rock. They subsequently beat Metallica in the ‘89 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental in what was widely viewed as an upset over the favorite, Metallica's ...And Justice for All. Ian Anderson composed “Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow,” and the band originally recorded it in ‘81 for the Broadsword and the Beast album (although it was left off). The 5/4 metered song is more folk rock-inspired with synthesizers. “Another Christmas Song” was also written by Ian Anderson. The band Included the song on the Rock Island album on side B, and eventually released it as a single on December 4, 1989. Flute? Yep. Folk and fantasy themes? Uh huh. Heavy metal and hard rock? Nope. Not at all. Sorry. So grab your flute, strike a flamingo pose, and listen to this episode on Jethro Tull “Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow!”Sounds of ChristmasFB: @SOCMusicTwitter: @SOCMusicIG: @socmusicHolly Jolly X'masuFB: @HollyJollyXmasuTwitter: @HollyJollyXmasuIG: @hollyjollyxmasuGive us a buzz! What's up, dudes? It's a beloved holiday staple, and it's turning 70 years old! Yes, the 1954 Bing Crosby/Danny Kaye classic “White Christmas,” first released on video in 1986! Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas, Scott Leopold from Holly Jolly X'masu, and Jeremy Phelps the Alamo City Santa join me to reminisce about the crooner and the comic and the song that gives all the Christmas feels!Private Davis saves Captain Wallace's life in the war, and so they team up as a performing duo. As big time stars, they seek out the sisters of an old army buddy who are performing as a singing act. After rescuing the sisters from a scam, they follow them to Vermont to spend Christmas relaxing and skiing. As it turns out, the inn they're staying at is owned by their formal General.Seeing how the lack of snowfall has crippled his inn, the quartet sets out to change his fortunes. They concoct a scheme to get their old unit back together. Meanwhile, the quartet get all Hallmark-y and lovey-dovey. There are classic miscommunications and misconceptions, but all's well that ends well. Oh, and it snows, too!Musical numbers? Check. Choreographed dance sequences? For sure. Christmas? Well, at the very beginning and very end, at least. So put on your Santa suit, sing “White Christmas,” and celebrate the 70th anniversary of this classic!Sounds of ChristmasFB: @SOCMusicTwitter: @SOCMusicIG: @socmusicHolly Jolly X'masuFB: @HollyJollyXmasuTwitter: @HollyJollyXmasuIG: @hollyjollyxmasuAlamo City SantaIG: @alamocitysantaGive us a buzz! What's up, dudes? I've got Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas and Scott Leopold from Holly Jolly X'masu here to talk the mutant disco/no wave album “A Christmas Record!” From ZE Records, it was a triumph of experimental Christmas music.Founded in 1978 by Michael Zilkha and Michel Esteban, ZE was one of the most popular rated labels, capturing the emerging New York sound of the period. They gained exposure through a distribution deal with Island Records. In fact, before long they had signed such acts as Kid Creole, the Waitresses, Was (Not Was), Cristina, and James White. Called “the best independent record label in the world” and “the world's most fashionable label,” they closed their doors in ‘84.In 1981, ZE released a Christmas compilation album as a lark. Of course the album is noted for standout alternative tracks “Christmas Wrapping” and “Christmas on Riverside Drive.” Davitt Sigerson's “It's a Big Country” is a folksy little ditty that plays as a newsletter of sorts, tucked into a Christmas card. Unfortunately, some of the songs don't quite hit as hard. Suicide's “Hey, Lord” is a depressing number and Alan Vega's “No More Christmas Blues” feels like just the opposite.Synthesizer? Yep. Funk rhythms? Got ‘em. Bummer Christmas songs? For sure! So grab your record player, put “A Christmas Record,” and listen to this episode!Sounds of ChristmasFB: @SOCMusicTwitter: @SOCMusicIG: @socmusicHolly Jolly X'masuFB: @HollyJollyXmasuTwitter: @HollyJollyXmasuIG: @hollyjollyxmasuGive us a buzz! What's up, dudes? The Christmas release “Clue” is soooo good that I have to cover it again! This time I've got Matt Spaulding from North Pole Radio and Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas with me to solve the mystery! When six strangers are invited to a mysterious mansion for dinner, murder is on the menu. Mr. Boddy, the host, is blackmailing all of them, from the jealous wife to the adulterous doctor to the maid's employer. One by one others arrive at the house only to be picked off as they're implicated as blackmail accomplices. With three different endings, the movie answers the questions of who killed Mr. Boddy, and where, and with what. The December release quickly became a cult classic. Jeff interviews cast and crew from Leslie Ann Warren and Michael McKean to director Jonathan Lynn. What was the enigmatic fourth ending? How did Jonathan Lynn end up writing the script? Why weren't the characters wearing the colors of their game counterparts? Blackmail? Yep. Murder? Of course. Flames on the side of my face? Only if Madeline Kahn is saying it. What's up, dudes? One of the greatest duos in music, it's Daryl Hall and John Oates! Well, in 1983 they released a Christmas single. Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas joins me to talk all about their version of "Jingle Bell Rock!" Daryl Hall and John Oates, commonly referred to as Hall & Oates, were an American pop rock duo who ruled the airwaves in the '80s. By the fall of 1983, they were one of the biggest music acts in the United States. They had five Number 1 singles to their credit, two consecutive Top 10 albums, and were one of the biggest names on MTV! They released their cover of Bobby Helms's 1957 classic "Jingle Bell Rock" in time for Christmas, and MTV played the heck out of the video. The duo recorded two versions: one with Hall singing lead and one with Oates singing lead. Likewise, there were two versions of the video. The video is known for its campy, over the top gestures and costumes, including guitarist G.E. Smith as grandma!Lime green pants? Check. Deranged Santa? Uh huh.
