This week, it was a hodgepodge of crazy tales. A neighborhood watchdog upended my week in a big way, I let Ben drink out of a strangers water bottle, and we had a special guest. Then, we hit the hot headlines of the week: Moo Deng, The Royals (don't come for me!), Diddy, Barbara Mandrell, the Salt Lake Premiere...plus I had a couple meet-cutes that took a hard left. Most people don't associate Ronald Reagan with country music, but in today's podcast, we'll hear another side! The President actually journeyed to Nashville, Tennessee to celebrate the birthday of one of country music's all-time greats, Roy Acuff. He met with Mr. Acuff and his family early in the day, then journeyed to the Grand Ole Opry Theater at Opryland, USA to deliver these remarks. You'll hear the President mention Barbara Mandrell early on because as you might recall, she had been in a terrible automobile accident.

Podían cantar rumbas y rock and roll y rythm and blues y doo wop y hasta country newgrass. Los que cantaron: Poison Love - Johnnie & Jack What About You - Jimmy Dickens Standing Room Only - Barbara Mandrell What Do You Think of Her Now - Johnnie & Jack Sweet Gene Vincent - Ian Dury Foolin' Around - Johnnie & Jack I Overlooked an Orchid - Johnnie & Jack The Rhumba Boogie - Hank Snow The Golden Rocket - Hank Snow Uncle Pen - Bill Monroe Hey, Good Lookin' - Hank Williams The Best Strangers - Barbara Mandrell Viva la radio Saludos cordiales El galgo

Collin Tweten is a young hammer bass angler from darn near the same town as our title sponsor; Grizzly Coolers, in Decorah, Iowa. The dude is just 25 years old and knows his way around the deer woods and the local pools of the Mississippi River. Just a couple days ago Collin was fishing a BFL tournament on pool 9 of the Miss . He decided to run a skinny part of the river to access a new spot that he's run through, according to him, hundreds of times. In the video, which we will release in two days (chances are you've already seen it), you can BARELY see a small section of log sticking up above the water as Collin approaches it. With the wind blowing, the waves created enough ripple effect that Collin, even while boating totally responsibly, couldn't see the log, struck it going about 60 MPH, and ripped his entire engine off the back of his Legend Bass Boat, snapping the motor mounts clean through. SIDENOTE - the engine was a nearly impossible to find brand new Mercury 4 stroke 225HP. As told by the late great lead tenor Gordon Stoker, this is the story of the greatest backup group in the history of recorded music and that is undoubtedly the Jordanaires, a gospel group of mostly Tennessee boys, formed in the 1940s, that set the standard for studio vocal groups in the '50s, '60s, '70s, and beyond. In their sixty-five-year career, from 1948 through 2013, the recordings they sang on have sold an estimated eight billion copies. They sang on more than 200 of Elvis's recordings, including most of his biggest hits. They were in three of his best-known movies, appeared with him on most of his early nation-wide TV shows, and toured with him for many years. Throughout Elvis's early career, the Jordanaires were his most trusted friends and probably his most positive influence. While the Jordanaires' bread and butter may have been Nashville's burgeoning recording industry, it seemed that there was always a plane waiting to take them cross country to the pop sessions in L.A. They sang on most of Ricky Nelson's biggest hits and over the years backed up Andy Williams, Fats Domino, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Dinah Shore, The Everly Brothers, Glen Campbell, Patti Page, Neil Young, Perry Como, Loretta Lynn, Ringo Starr, Tom Jones, Andy Griffith, Bobby Vinton, Brenda Lee, Patsy Cline, Billy Ray Cyrus, Clyde McPhatter, and about 2,100 other recording acts.Michael Kosser is a senior editor at American Songwriter magazine, where he has written a column on songwriting called "Street Smarts" for the past twenty years. Since 1979, Kosser's songs have been recorded by George Jones, Barbara Mandrell, Conway Twitty, Tammy Wynette, Charlie Rich, and others. Many of his songs have appeared on the national country music charts. Kosser offers an in-depth, insider's view of Nashville during its ascendancy in his book “How Nashville Became Music City, U.S.A.: Fifty Years of Music Row”.Alan Stoker is the son of Gordon Stoker, of the Jordanaires quartet. He's a Grammy-winning audio engineer, a musician, vocalist, and a music historian. As a musician/vocalist, he's backed up beach music legend Clifford Curry and Sam Moore of the Stax Records duo Sam and Dave. He's also recorded with prog-rock group McKendree Spring and E Street Band bassist Gary Tallent. He's opened shows for Ray Charles and his orchestra, Mary Wilson of the Supremes, Rick Nelson and the Stone Canyon band, the Tams, Crystal Gayle, and others. He's the long-time legendary archivist for the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, TN. He's preserved some of the earliest recordings of the biggest names in music. Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash are just a few of the artists whose recordings Stoker has been involved with. His work is credited on close to one hundred commercially released products, including “Hank Williams Mother's Best Flour Show”, “The Patsy Cline Collection”, “The Bristol Sessions: Historic Recordings from Bristol, Tennessee”, and the Grammy award–winning “Night Train to Nashville: Music City Rhythm & Blues 1945–1970”.Stoker has appeared in numerous documentaries as a music historian. This week we welcome Penny Gilley! For Penny Gilley, it's all about the fans. Whether she's singing on a stage in Las Vegas, a packed auditorium in South Dakota, or in front of thousands of GIs in Kuwait, Penny treats her audiences like a second family. Maybe that's part of growing up in a place like West Monroe, Louisiana, where her first audience were neighbors sitting in the pews at Southside Assembly of God. Penny has kept her promise. She's renowned for staying late to meet fans, sign autographs or just sit and talk. Most nights, she's the last person to leave the theater. “When you give them your time, you are giving them a piece of your life, and they take it to heart,” she says. That's why she's got some of the most loyal fans in show business. Penny's roots are deep in Louisiana. She started singing professionally as a teenager in West Monroe, as the only female member of a gospel group known as “The Louisianans.” Her love of country music led her to perform at Opry shows all over the South including The Louisiana Hayride in Shreveport. That helped shape the kind of show she puts on today. Penny released several singles to radio, two of which went to #1 on the independent chart. Her popularity spread overseas with more #1s in Europe where her traditional sound led to performances at festivals in Germany, Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Penny has worked with many country stars including her idols Barbara Mandrell and Loretta Lynn. She has performed throughout the country and around the world in venues from The Nugget, The Flamingo and Bally's in Las Vegas & Reno to casinos throughout the United States. But with all the glitz and glamour, Penny says that one of the blessings of her professional life has been the privilege of performing for soldiers overseas. After someone sent Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf a copy of her song about Desert Storm (“The Line Drawn In The Sand”) he invited Penny to headline at the homecoming for Desert Storm soldiers at Oceanside, Calif. in 1991. She performed for over 120,000 servicemen and women and their family and friends in the biggest military homecoming event ever held in the United States. Penny hosts her own weekly TV show "The Penny Gilley Show", recorded in Fort Worth, Texas on RFD-TV (DishNetwork 231, DirecTV 345, ATT-Uverse 1568, over 600 cable companies) on Fridays at 2:30 PM and 7:30 pm(Central Time.). LIVE: Lee Greenwood -- The Story Behind "God Bless The USA" LIVE: Lee Greenwood -- The Story Behind "God Bless The USA" Music has always been a part of Lee Greenwood's life. He started playing the piano when he was seven and the saxophone at 12. In junior high, he started his first group called the Moonbeams. His sister Patricia was the piano player in the band. By the time, he finished High School he played most all the instruments in the orchestra and was the Drum Major for the marching band. Greenwood was born in Los Angeles California & finished high school in Sacramento in June 1960. He passed on track & music scholarships to the College of the Pacific along with a professional baseball career to pursue his passion for music. He also elected to skip his high school graduation ceremony to begin work at the Golden Hotel & Casino in Reno Nevada with his own band, the “Apollos”. That turned out to be a great choice. The California native was discovered in 1979 by Larry McFaden, who saw him performing in a show at the Nugget Casino in Sparks, Nevada. Larry was the bass player and bandleader for Mel Tillis. He brought the singer to Nashville and got him signed to the Halsey Agency, who booked The Oak Ridge Boys. He began working with producer Jerry Crutchfield who would record with Lee for the next 20 years. “Choosing songs to record is always exciting,” says Greenwood. “I'm a songwriter as well and I love lyrics that have depth and emotion. I'm thankful for the many writers & artists who have contributed to my career”. With seven #1 songs & 25 charted singles to his credit, choosing songs proved to be a success for Greenwood. His country hits include: “It Turns Me Inside Out”, “Ring On Her Finger Time On Her Hands”, ”She's Lying”, “I Don't Mind the Thorns If You're The Rose”, “Dixie Road”, “Somebody's Gonna Love You”, “Going Going Gone”, “You Got A Good Love Comin”, “Fools Gold”, and “Mornin Ride” while he already garnered several crossover hits such as “Touch & Go Crazy”, “IOU” and the duet with Barbara Mandrell, “To Me”. Lee Greenwood has won numerous industry awards including, Male Vocalist of the Year from the Academy of Country Music in 1983, two Male Vocalist of the Year awards from the Country Music Association in 1983 & 1984 and a Grammy for Top Male Vocal Performance in 1985 for “I.O.U.”. The CMA also named “God Bless The U.S.A.” its Song of the Year in 1985. “God Bless the USA” went far beyond what Greenwood expected when he wrote it in the back of his tour bus in 1983. The song has been in the top five on the country singles charts three times (1991, 2001 and 2003), giving it the distinction of being the only song in any genre of music to achieve that feat. It was also #1 on the pop charts after 9/11/01. In addition, CBS News voted “God Bless The U.S.A.” the most recognizable patriotic song in America. In 2011, Beyonce offered her version of “God Bless the U.S.A.” as a download, with the proceeds going to the 9/11 firefighters fund in NYC. It has been performed by contestants on “American Idol” twice & was the winning song in the 2011 “Dancing with the Stars” competition on ABC. It is performed at all military and patriotic events throughout the year all across America. “USA” has also been in several movies and is now part of the film shown by The Department of Homeland Security when new citizens are sworn in to the United States. Greenwood says; “USA is the song I always felt the need to write. I wanted to have something that would unite Americans from coast to coast and to instill pride back in the United States. The song represents my family, my community and those men and women who have paid the price for the freedoms we all love and enjoy.” President George W. Bush appointed Greenwood to serve on the National Endowment of the Arts Council and his appointment was U.S. Senate approved. That Presidential Appointment continued under President Obama and still continues under President Trump. In 2012, Greenwood released a children's illustrated book, “Does God Still Bless the U.S.A.,” and ranked #1 on many of the notable Best Sellers Lists. It features a 30 day calendar, “Prayers of a Patriot” and includes two songs, written by Greenwood, free for download in the back of the book. One is a new version of “God Bless the U.S.A.,” and the other is a Praise & Worship song, “Show Me The Way”. Lee and his wife, Kimberly, a former Miss Tennessee, fell in love on his 1989 USO/DOD tour. They were married in Nashville in 1992 and have two sons, Dalton and Parker. We had a great conversation with Country artist Joedi Silvers on The Chris & Sandy Show. We talked about many things from Nashville, music, sacrifices, he told some really great stories to a whole lot more!Joedi Silvers came by his classic country sound honestly. His father lived it, performing in Nashville and all over the world in the 70's and 80's. Joe Don Silvers was a hitmaker. He wrote for Barbara Mandrell, Charley Pride, Janie Fricke, Lois Johnson and Willie Nelson, to name a few. He also founded a studio on Music Row with his friend, Faron Young, “The Queen of Sound.” Joe Don toured for decades all over the world. Two of his longest and most notable touring partners were “The Nashville Junction” and Hank Williams, Jr.His young son quickly proved to be a chip off the old block musically. “I started singing at three,” recalls Joedi. “My dad had a studio in our basement, and some of my first musical memories are of joining him in singing ‘Orange Blossom Special' and ‘Folsom Prison Blues' in that basement studio.”As a young boy Joedi was a typical kid, spending his time playing sports and video games. Eventually he pursued his true calling and passion for the traditional country music style of his father. He taught himself to play his dad's guitar, becoming proficient on the instrument and quickly harnessing the retro country sound that comes naturally.Joedi's voice takes you back to a time when artists like Ray Price, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash were kings, when steel guitar and analog sound ruled, and music made you feel something in your soul. Joedi hopes to bring back this style, armed with drawers of songs penned by his dad that fit his deep throwback voice and rhinestone-shimmering image perfectly. On a whim he recorded “Sleeping Alone,” a song written by his father, and uploaded it to Instagram. Within a few days, the video had over half a million views, and eventually it exceeded well over 2 million views. With that success under his belt, Joedi set off for Nashville, his dad's old stomping grounds, armed with little more than his sheer talent and a desire to share it with the world. At 19 years old, Joedi Silvers is an old soul who often seems wise beyond his years. He currently hones his talent performing in bars on Broadway, where many of Nashville's biggest artists began their journey to fame. He brings a fresh energy and passion to the original sound that first made Music City great. His is the same honest sound that propelled a generation of artists who are revered a few streets away from Broadway at the Country Music Hall of Fame. Joedi is ready to take his place among pure country greats both past and present.
In today's edition of Overdrive Radio, trucker-songwriter and Overdrive Extra contributing writer "Long Haul Paul" Marhoefer takes us through his interview at the Mid-America Trucking Show last month with longtime entertainment-industry-specialized trucker Chip Warterfield, now in a safety and operations role with Upstaging, Inc. Warterfield tells the story of what happened to the company when COVID in 2020 essentially brought every single one of its touring clients to an abrupt and complete halt. Warterfield also speaks of his own trucking beginnings back in the 1980s. If Warterfield's name sounds familiar, you may have caught his story of an early trucking mentor, Kenny Jones, the father of Barbara Mandrell's then steel guitar player, Mike Jones. Kenny spent his entire career trucking in some form or another and taught Warterfield perhaps more than he knew back at that time: https://www.overdriveonline.com/overdrive-extra/article/15290773/a-trucking-tribute-to-kenny-jones-invaluable-driving-mentor Read more from Marhoefer here: https://www.overdriveonline.com/authors/contact/14865330/long-haul-paul

Episode 36. A Song for Grandma and Grandpa by Johnny Prill https://www.nationalgrandparentsday.com/ https://www.facebook.com/nationalgrandparentsday https://www.youtube.com/c/JohnnyPrill A Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter in the folk-polka tradition, Johnny Prill has received numerous accolades for both his music and his volunteerism, which began when he was 12 years old performing with his accordion at local nursing homes. Except for the impact of COVID-19, Johnny Prill and his family have performed monthly at the Cortney Manor Nursing Home since 1986. Each year they host an annual Christmas Eve show that features four generations of the Prill family and a special Grandparents Day Celebration for the community. In addition to the Health Care Association of Michigan's presentation of its “Volunteer of The Year Award,” he has received shout-outs from former Jeopardy Host, the late Alex Trebek; U.S. Olympian Misty May-Treanor; American actresses and comedians Betty White and the late Phyllis Diller; American folk singer the late Pete Seeger; country singers the late Charlie Daniels and Barbara Mandrell; and Irish singer Daniel O'Donnell. Elected officials on the local, state, and federal levels also have honored Johnny Prill for his volunteer work to honor senior citizens and veterans. In 1982, he wrote “A Song for Grandma and Grandpa” to honor his grandparents. It has become the official song for National Grandparents Day, which is celebrated in the United States the first Sunday after Labor Day. I extend a heart-felt welcome to this incredible musician. ****** I had hoped to present my interview with Johnny Prill as a bonus episode on Grandparents Day along with announcing the winners of the Adventures with Grammy Essay Contest to celebrate both Gorgeous Grandma Day, which we celebrate every July 23, and National Grandparents Day, which will celebrate this year September 12. However, a bit of a snafu prevented the contest from happening this year. Watch for it in 2022. Because Johnny Prill gave us permission to play “A Song for Grandma and Grandpa” on the podcast, I present it now to honor and celebrate grandparents near and far. ****** Adventures with Grammy Newsletter To sign up, visit https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/su/7ZleyB4 You will receive a micro-book that provides directions for a super fun activity to do with your children and grandchildren!
