In episode 398, a 2016 ESPN article written by Ethan Sherwood Strauss has been converted into a vivid and engaging case study illustrating the laws of power, influence, persuasion, and value—including what to do and what not to do. The case study examines Steph Curry's rise to fame and his disillusionment and feelings of disrespect from the leaders at Nike. His decision to sign with underdog Under Armour (UA) over Nike has redirected billions of dollars over the years—and will continue to do so as Curry will sign a lifetime deal with UA. This episode reveals how Nike missed the shifting NBA trend away from back-to-the-basket offense and toward historic long range accuracy beyond the three-point line. The story also reveals one path toward developing trust through an unlikely source in character of Kent Bazemore, an undrafted 12th-man from Old Dominion University. This case study involving Steph Curry, Nike, and Under Armour is a story about life: How to build trust, developing strong relationships, and adaptation to dynamic industry changes. KeyTakeaways/Insights •Delivering value first through helpfulness and persistence pays off over time. •Documenting and challenging assumptions enables you to monitor trends and position yourself to gain advantages from industry shifts. •Never underestimate the power of social proof ; allow others to promote your products and services •Innovation can come from unexpected places if you're open-minded •Market leadership can lead to complacency, causing undercapitalized underdogs to connect with rising stars •Inattention to strong relationships increases your vulnerability to competitors Chapters 0:00:00 Underutilized Strategy in Plain Sight: Curry and the 3-point line 0:05:24 Anatomy of a Trainwreck: Nike's sales pitch to Curry 0:09:27 The Kent Bazemore Principle: Curiosity by proxy 0:13:03 Under Armour's unconventional strategy 0:21:48 The Underdog Advantage 0:25:51 Nike defends     This episode is brought to you by The Simple Sales Pipeline® —the most efficient way to organize and value any construction sales rep's roster of customers and prospects in under 30 minutes once every 30 days. *** If you enjoyed this podcast, please leave a review on Apple Podcasts. The vibes are not as strong as the last episode because Kings got a bit of a reality check against the Suns. Coming into Wednesday's game, the Suns rested basically their entire 1st and 2nd unit, leaving only their 3rd and 4th units to face the Kings. In what is a very familiar sight, these scrappy Suns smacked the Kings in the mouth to start and outplayed them for much of the 1st half. While the Kings ultimately fought back and got things in order for them to pull out the win, it's very concerning that the ghost of Kangz past still haunts this team. The hope will be that these kinds of game happen less often this season because the Kings will need to win every game they can if they're serious about making the playoffs. In other Kings news, the Kings waived Quinn Cook and Kent Bazemore this morning, and then signed Wes Iwundu and Jordan Ford. Andy Hoops also posted a really good video on the history of Keegan Murray from high school all the way to now. And of course, we go over this week's episode of House of the Dragon in what was another wonderful episode that's built up major anticipation for the next episode. In another season with better karma, maybe Russell Westbrook's potential game-winner Friday night against the Hornets goes in. Maybe the Lakers pull the upset, and pick up an inspirational, unexpected win on a night where LeBron James and Anthony Davis were both in street clothes. But not this year. This year, the Lakers went out, shorthanded, fell behind early and made a good run at the end, but Westbrook's last-second three clanged off the rim, and the Lakers lose. They're now two games under .500 with one more game remaining on the road trip, against suddenly red-hot Atlanta. They are running out of time to get themselves out of the play in game and into the West's top 6. Can they get there? That, plus questions from Friday's game. It's been a struggle all season for the Lakers to find supporting players to put around their Big 3 (it's been a struggle to keep the Big 3 on the floor, too, but that's a different story). Kent Bazemore, Wayne Ellington, and Trevor Ariza have all been ineffective. DeAndre Jordan, too. Kendrick Nunn is yet to play. A bright spot, though, has been the pickup of Stanley Johnson, who has brought badly needed athleticism on the defensive end, and quickly become a favorite of Frank Vogel.Wednesday, the Lakers reached an agreement with Johnson that will keep him around for the rest of the season, and give the Lakers first dibs on his services next year as well. It's a good deal for all involved, and it's not impossible that, stripped of the expectations that come with being a high lottery pick, Johnson, still only 25, could find a niche and develop with the Lakers. Not into a star - that ship has sailed - but as a valuable role player. It's a cool payoff for a player who worked very hard to make his way back to the NBA.From there... the great NBA writer Marc Stein has news about Russell Westbrook, and those rumors about a potential deal to the Houston Rockets for John Wall. It seems the Lakers, rightly, are unwilling to include a first round pick to rid themselves of Westbrook. But it's an applaudingly cheeky move from the Rockets to put that possibility out there, just in case things melt down and the Lakers get desperate.Meanwhile, Ramona Shelburne of ESPN wrote a great feature this week talking about Westbrook post-benching, and how he and the Lakers are trying to get the on-court results from this roster to match expectations. A couple important takeaways: There's no Plan B. The Lakers know they're pot-committed to this experiment. Westbrook's comfort zone extends well beyond what he's doing on the floor. HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Stanley Johnson gets a contract. Cool for him, smart for the Lakers.SEGMENT 2: On Westbrook for Wall. The Lakers, it seems have their limits when it comes to undoing the Westbrook deal.SEGMENT 3: What goes into Westbrook's overall comfort? Not that you need to be told, but 2021 was not exactly a good 12 months for the Lakers. One season with high hopes flamed out in a wave of injuries, and another is on track to disappoint as well, thanks to another combination of bad health and bad roster choices. But that future isn't yet written! It's time to look back at the year that was, and find reasons for Lakers fans to be optimistic about what still could be for the 2021-22 squad.Any sense of hope, though, is contingent at least in part on winning all the winnable games the Lakers have in front of them, even with Anthony Davis still sidelined. That starts with the next four games on the schedule -- Friday vs. Portland, Sunday vs. Minnesota, then games against the Kings and Hawks. All at home. All teams below .500, two of them (the Wolves and Sacto) tightly packed behind the Lakers in the West. That these games are more important than Wednesday's loss in Memphis, or upcoming games against, say, Utah, explain where the team is right now.The Lakers will get some reinforcements, though, which should help them capitalize on what's coming. Austin Reaves, Trevor Ariza and Kent Bazemore will all be available this weekend, opening up more options for Frank Vogel/David Fizdale as the team leans into small lineups. It's time to shove the old year out the door, and welcome in a new one!HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers have four very winnable games coming up, all at home. They need to take advantage.SEGMENT 2: The Lakers are getting (badly needed) players back. Is that going to squeeze Talen Horton-Tucker from the rotation? Well, the good cheer generated by the win in Dallas was fun while it lasted. Less than 48 hours after Austin Reaves became a folk hero with a game-winner against the Mavericks, all hell has broken loose for the Lakers. Since then, the Lakers have lost games to the Timberwolves (Friday) and Bulls (Sunday), lost various teammates to the health and safety protocols (as of this recording, the unavailable include Reaves, Talen Horton-Tucker, Avery Bradley, Malik Monk, Dwight Howard, and Kent Bazemore), lost head coach Frank Vogel to the protocols... and most importantly, lost Anthony Davis to a sprained knee in Minnesota. That injury is expected to keep AD out at least one month, and who knows how much longer, given his history with ailments.So. What are the Lakers to do from here?To begin, continue to play as hard as they did during the loss in Chicago, which will at least give them a fighting chance against many teams. (They can also do things like stop turning the ball over and missing free throws, but that approach has been ignored all season.) With Trevor Ariza finally back, they can further lean into playing the small ball that best suits them (albeit without Davis, which is the best version of that look). They can perhaps utilize Isaiah Thomas, here on a 10-day hardship contract, and having put up double figures in both games since he arrived. Given how Davis' absence dramatically affects the Lakers' defensive upside, they're gonna have to score more. But really, they're just gonna have to hang on tight for dear life. Make no mistake. Davis' injury is a really big, bad deal, and there ain't much way around that fact.Host: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT ONE: The Kamenetzkys break down the loss to Chicago, and where the Lakers stand with the roster decimated.SEGMENT TWO: How can Thomas and Ariza help the team?SEGMENT THREE: How can the Lakers best offset this period with Davis shelved?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. The Lakers may have done their work early on Sunday with a rare non-TV motivated 12:30 pm start, but that doesn't mean they weren't really busy. They busted out a new starting lineup featuring Talen Horton-Tucker, who was making his season debut. They made it clear LeBron James was on his way back, perhaps for Monday's game against the Bulls, but if not then, sometime during the week. Oh, and they beat San Antonio behind a monster performance from Anthony Davis. So much to discuss! It starts with A.D.. Against an undersized Spurs team, Davis didn't screw around, finishing with 19 points in the first half, most coming on dunks and lobs inside (including one he fed to himself!). Davis has been excellent to start the year, both on the floor and particularly when it comes to leadership, demonstrated by his reaction to Friday's loss to Minnesota followed by his performance Sunday. Meanwhile, THT's was instant and obvious. His 17 points were two more than Kent Bazemore, who was a DNP-CD, has in November. What does THT's return mean for the rotation? Will Frank Vogel continue to go small, even as opponents get bigger? Finally, Alex Caruso will return to Staples Center Monday with the Bulls, where he'll receive a huge ovation from a fan base that still loves the guy. But after his appearance on JJ Redick's podcast last week, where he made it clear the Lakers unquestionably low-balled him, the "did the Lakers eff up?" conversation has been rekindled.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: AD dominates as the Lakers win Sunday.SEGMENT 2: THT is back? The Lakers may not have played Thursday, but that doesn't keep the news cycle from churning. The team, no shock given happenings since the start of training camp, yet another injury. This time, it's Austin Reaves who joins the walking wounded. The hamstring that kept him out of Wednesday's game called "minor" by Frank Vogel will now keep him out at least a couple weeks. Frank, you lied to us! So that's bad news... but it wouldn't be nearly as bad as more bad reports around LeBron James. Fortunately, reporting from ESPN this week indicates that abdominal injury isn't likely worse than initially presented by the team.Whew! So with all the housekeeping out of the way, more attention can be given to Kent Bazemore, who is quietly suffering through one of the uglier early season slumps for any Laker to this point. His 3-point percentage this month? 10. 10! That's really bad! And not surprisingly, his playing time has dropped with his accuracy. Even with his defensive capabilities, the Lakers badly need credible floor spacers for the offense to operate effectively. If he can't do it, Vogel has to respond. And speaking of floor spacing, everyone knows the critical nature of it, and the conversation taking place around Lakers centers. Turns out, that floor spacing question- and the question of offensive efficiency- is about a lot more than Anthony Davis. Russell Westbrook, as noted by Cranjis McBasketball (@Tim_NBA on Twitter) of the Lakers Exceptionalism pod, plays a brand of basketball much closer to the rim when DeAndre Jordan and Dwight Howard aren't on the floor. And at-the-rim Russ is a big improvement over his cousin, Jumpshooting Russ. Finally, reading some angry mail!HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Injury updates, and WTF, Kent Bazemore?SEGMENT 2: More Baze, and why the center conversation is about a lot more than Anthony Davis.SEGMENT 3: How can the Lakers get the D they need while giving Westbrook easy paths to the bucket? Here we go! The Lakers finally played a game that counts. So how did the new LeBron James/Anthony Davis/Russell Westbrook era kick off? Not so hot. On the surface, a 121-114 loss to the Warriors doesn't seem *that* terrible, but once you break down the particulars, there was a lot to be concerned about. There was the defense, which fell apart badly over the second half. There were turnovers. There was sub-50 percent shooting from the free throw line. And there was Westbrook, whose Laker debut was pretty disastrous all around. (The potential reasons for this inauspiciousness are both fascinating and, frankly, human.)To be clear, there were also some bright spots. Kent Bazemore played great defense against Steph Curry. The offense was at times quite overwhelming. And LeBron and AD looked like... well... LeBron and AD. But in all, this start marked exactly what this veteran team has promised it would be: A work very much in progress.Hosts: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: What went wrong during the loss... most notably, the defense.SEGMENT 2: What was more promising. Kent Bazemore's defense, and the performances from LeBron and AD.SEGMENT 3: Westbrook. With the regular season about 24 hours from launching, there's been a lot of talk about the Lakers' 0-6 preseason, what could be the explanation(s), and whether those goose eggs even matter. (Plus, how best to go about actually winning some games once they count.)As far as explanations go, it's worth noting the Lakers aren't just fitting together a ton of new faces. They're doing so while implementing an offense that even holdovers LeBron James and Anthony Davis don't entirely know yet. Frank Vogel described it as "intelligent movement through randomness," a very Radiohead-esque way of saying there will be a lot of motion and cutting. Does it make sense to add "learn a different way of playing" to the plate of a roster that's already lacking continuity? In the Kamenetzkys' estimation, it certainly could. As far as winning games goes, who starts will obviously play a role in success. Two slots remain in question, and the answers will come via a committee of Vogel, the front office... and the team captains. This feels like an extension of the role Davis and especially LeBron, by all accounts, play in decisions around the franchise. Is this a good idea?In the meantime, the Kamenetzkys have lobbied for Kent Bazemore in the first five, but when asked whether he's earned the spot, Bazemore gave himself a lukewarm endorsement. It's a very stark contrast to last season, when Dennis Schröder declared himself the starting point guard during his introductory presser, and indicative of the overarching selflessness (so far) of this championship-focused team. And finally, what does the 0-6 preseason really mean? ESPN NBA data guru Kevin Pelton has thoughts, and the Kamenetzkys have thoughts on his thoughts.Hosts: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: How will the Lakers' new offense work, and why did they decide to start something new in the first place?SEGMENT 2: The collaborative process of deciding a starting lineup (which may or may not include Bazemore).SEGMENT 3: From a data and historical perspective, does the Lakers' 0-6 preseason actually matter?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!SweatBlockGet it today for 20% off at SweatBlock.com with promo code LockedOn, or at Amazon and CVS.Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Tuesday's preseason loss to Warriors didn't just present the first look at the Lakers' Big Three of LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook. It raised the question of who should start alongside that trio of All-Stars. Granted, Frank Vogel's hands are a bit tied at the moment, given all the players who are shelved with injuries. But could Kent Bazemore and Carmelo Anthony, the two filling out Tuesday's lineup, fit the bill moving forward? Bazemore feels like a lock by now, but Melo? More debatable. So the Kamenetzkys do just that. What are the pros and cons of the future Hall of Famer vs. Wayne Ellington, Kendrick Nunn or other looks?Whatever the rotation chosen, how much fun will the Lakers actually be to watch? ESPN's Zach Lowe offered up some thoughts in a recent column, and the Kamenetzkys react to his assessment. Finally, undrafted two-way player Austin Reaves has been turning heads of late with some unexpectedly un-rookie play. Is he a viable option once games actually count?Hosts: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: What's the best starting lineup for the Lakers, and does it include Melo?SEGMENT 2: On a pure "fun" scale, how enjoyable will the Lakers be?SEGMENT 3: Is Hillbilly Kobe a thing?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!SweatBlockGet it today for 20% off at SweatBlock.com with promo code LockedOn, or at Amazon and CVS.Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. The last several days have not been kind to the Lakers. They've yet to win a preseason game. Trevor Ariza is out indefinitely after ankle surgery. Malik Monk is sidelined (albeit hopefully not for long) with a groin issue. And then came Monday's news that Talen Horton Tucker will require surgery to repair torn ligaments in his thumb. It's not yet known how long the recovery will take, but it goes without saying that the Lakers will be without their emerging young player for a sizable period.Beyond the loss of THT's individual skills, the Lakers are extremely low on dudes who could conceivably (much less credibly) play small forward. It's basically now LeBron James, Kent Bazemore... and crickets. This was already a thin position on the roster, but Rob Pelinka seemed content to keep the fifteenth roster spot open, rather than add some depth, Now that feels damn near impossible to justify. Whether James Ennis, Wes Matthews or whoever, the Lakers need a live body who can credibly play 10-15 minutes at the spot.On the positive side, Tuesday's preseason game against the Warriors should finally feature the long-awaited preseason debuts of LeBron, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook as a trio. What will the Kamenetzkys be watching for as we finally see what this looks like?Hosts: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: What is the trickledown effect of Talen Horton-Horton out for the foreseeable future?SEGMENT 2: More on THT's injury, plus the need to find another legit small forward option.SEGMENT 3: What to watch for when LeBron, AD and Russ take the floor together.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!SweatBlockGet it today for 20% off at SweatBlock.com with promo code LockedOn, or at Amazon and CVS.Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Trevor Ariza is out before he was in, Talen Horton-Tucker's breakout campaign is on indefinite hold, and all of the sudden...the Lakers are rather thin on the wing.Following a brief hiatus, the Hoop Ball Lakers podcast is back with the preseason in full swing, media day firmly in the rear view mirror, and a brand new Lakers team looking to leave their mark on the rest of the NBA. We return with a solo ride from Ethan in which he discusses the Lakers current injury woes, things that he's liked in the preseason, questions the Lakers still have to answer, and opines on how fast this team can come together in order to show that change is good as LA tries to align its stars around LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Whether it's DeAndre Jordan playing the JaVale role, the types of lineups the Lakers can put around AD at center, who gets the bulk of the minutes on the wing—hello, Kent Bazemore—or other issues, the Lakers have plenty to figure out in a very brief period of time prior to the season tipping off. Join Ethan for a 25-minute dive back into Lakerland as the club looks to cultivate that same sense of chemistry on the court that they're clearly sharing off of it.SUBSCRIBE, Rate and Review on iTunes and make sure to follow @HoopBallLakers on Twitter for all our delightful updates and goodies!Manscaped is BACK, baby! How Kent Bazemore fits with This Year's Lakers... Guests, Sam Esfandiari and Andy Liu!

An argument could be made that Kent Bazemore was the most important offseason acquisition not named "Russell" or "Westbrook" for the Lakers. If nothing else, Bazemore feels like he has the highest chance of becoming the team's best two-way role player, and given how the Lakers seemingly sacrificed a lot of defense to help jumpstart the often sluggish offense during the last two seasons, any player with skills on both sides of the ball will be crucial. Is Bazemore capable of making that type of contribution? For more insight, the Kamenetzkys spoke with Sam Esfandiari and Andy Liu, who cover the Golden State Warriors as co-hosts of the Light Years podcast. They addressed questions like whether Bazemore's hot shooting in Golden State last year was real (yes), his defense meets the mark (depends on the assignment) and where his weaknesses lie (most loudly, on-court decisions). At times, Bazemore will frustrate the hell out of fans, but they'll also dig how hard he plays and his non-stop energy. If nothing else, they expect Bazemore to outplay his veteran's minimum contract by a solid margin, and is in a position to succeed with the Lakers. From there, Esfandiari and Liu assess where the Warriors currently stand in a seemingly wide open Western Conference. A lot hinges on the health of Klay Thompson, who's missed two consecutive seasons with significant injuries. But if he's back to form, they're both confident the Warriors can hang with anybody. Other teams discussed include the Denver Nuggets and Phoenix Suns.Hosts: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Esfandiari and Liu break down the positives and negatives of Kent Bazemore, and the often wild fluctuations in his play.SEGMENT 2: More on Bazemore, including his shooting and defensive strengths.SEGMENT 3: A look at the Warriors next season, along with a few other teams in the conference. Is age nothing but a number? One could reach a conclusion that the Lakers feel so, when you look at the collective age of the 2021-22 roster. Other than Kendrick Nunn and Malik Monk, none of the new faces are younger than 26. Beyond those two, Anthony Davis and a newly re-signed Talen Horton, nobody else is under 32. That's led to some consternation about whether the Lakers are too cooked to compete, and LeBron James isn't having it. He sent (and deleted) two tweets begging the naysayers to keep talking, because it's just fuel for this team's fire. Unlike the whole #WashedKing nonsense, this is stuff actually being said. But is it nonetheless a valid concern? The Kamenetzkys discuss how much of this is troubling, how much doesn't matter at all, and why. Also, this team has the potential to be very good, but is it actually built for the playoffs? Let's take a look under the hood.Hosts: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: After discussing what to make of LeBron's deleted tweets, the Kamenetzkys break down the issues (or lack thereof) with a roster this, shall we say, seasoned. In particular, Kent Bazemore's role could be pivotal.SEGMENT 2: If age means certain players will inevitably experience some degree of dropoff, how big of a deal is that for this roster? How likely is it that Nunn, Monk or THT take a step forward establishing themselves?SEGMENT 3: Andy offers an observation about the team's playoff makeup, at least on paper.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. We're putting the band back together! The Lakers got a little weird on Monday, as free agency started across the NBA, signing four players, all of whom have previously played for the Lakers. One of them (Dwight Howard), twice! So did Rob Pelinka have a good day?Sort of?Wayne Ellington, Kent Bazemore, Trevor Ariza and Howard make for a perfectly good use of veteran's minimum deals. Each offers something the Lakers could use and ought to exceed the value of the deals they signed. But the day had a cost, too. The Chicago Bulls signed Alex Caruso to a four year deal worth about 37 million. A big number for regular folks, but a completely reasonable (and easily anticipated) salary range for A.C., and according to Sam Amick of The Athletic, the Lakers didn't even put forth an effort keep him. Why? Luxury taxes, most likely. The Lakers are a tax paying team, and would like to keep that payroll down as much as possible, apparently. But the logic of swinging for the fences on Westbrook while simultaneously trying to save money on the supporting cast seems like a really dumb one. Nor is it the best look. Finally, answering some of your post-Day 1 mailbag questions. No Andy Kamenetzky, but Brian Kamenetzky takes a few.HOST: Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers signed four free agents, and all four make some sense, though will raise the average age of the team up a few notches.SEGMENT 2: Why losing Caruso is painful for the Lakers.SEGMENT 3: A little more AC, plus the mailbag!Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.
