Massive range in this pod. A great talk as always, including but not limited to…* Is there much to say about beloved Kevon Looney leaving GSW? * Why, oh why, is the “cuck chair” Saam's preferred metaphor for GSW roster moves?* Why is Saam desperate to deal Jonathan Kuminga?* What is the chance Kuminga flourishes elsewhere?* Are millennial stars doomed to get injured?* Sam Presti shuts down Adam Silver's BS on injuries!* We love what Denver did (Cam Johnson fro MPJ)* Western perspectives on the Middle East? * What's with the American White Guy NBA moment right now?* Israelis in the NBA? * How to approach youth sports as a parent
In this episode – recorded prior to Trump's announcement of a ceasefire between Iran and Israel – Calvin and Alex unpack the alarming reality of US strikes on Iran, recently announced by President Trump on June 21, and the ensuing escalation of tensions between the US, Israel, and Iran. We situate these recent events within decades of neoconservative influence and prior escalations, including the 2020 assassination of Qasem Soleimani by US Forces (which we covered back in Episode 31), as well as Israel's “pre-emptive” strikes against Iran in 2024 and earlier in June 2025.We historicize the current conflict by highlighting the success of the 2015 Iran Nuclear Deal (JCPOA) in preventing escalation, contrasting it with Trump's abandonment and the Democrats' failure to defend it, and debunk media narratives about Iran's nuclear ambitions, confirming Iran's compliance with the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). We then dissect the propagandistic pro-war rhetoric that has been employed most recently, such as Trump's bizarre Truth Social posts announcing the "very successful attack," and exposing the dangerous slippages between US and Israeli foreign policy, evidenced by Senator Ted Cruz's admissions on a recent episode of Tucker Carlson's show. Finally, drawing on rhetorical scholars such as Jeffrey Tulis and Gordon Mitchell, we explore the libidinal urges driving contemporary presidential rhetoric and US war policy, and how intelligence is manipulated through "Team B intelligence coups," raising concerns about reliance on foreign intelligence like the Mossad. We conclude with a resolute call (echoing our earlier episode) for "No war with Iran," urging public dissent against these increasingly reckless and dangerous decisions.Works and concepts cited in this episode:Curtis, A. Marcus Morris is back on The Kevin O'Connor Show, and didn't hold back on any of his takes. Find out why Marcus believes Anthony Edwards is exposing JJ Redick as a rookie Head Coach, why he thinks the conditioning (and defense!) of Luka Doncic is perfectly fine, and what the Lakers need to do to make this a series. Plus, Marcus weighs in on what Ty Lue needs to change for the Los Angeles Clippers to regain the upper hand against the Denver Nuggets. Morris explains why he sees Giannis Antetokounmpo taking his talents to South Beach this summer, and why the Orlando Magic need to trade for Trae Young this offseason, too. Morris went in on everyone from Pat Riley to Ja Morant to NBA refs, and even had time to tell us why Shedeur Sanders' NFL Draft slide made him angry! Then Ethan Strauss and Sam Esfandiari both stop by to give their takes on the Golden State Warriors' 3-1 lead on the Houston Rockets. Ethan says it's finally time to admit that the Steph Curry-Draymond Green duo has joined Stockton/Malone and Jordan/Pippen as an all-time legendary tandem. Sam gives Draymond Green his flowers too, but acknowledges that even some Warriors fans still don't like Green. In addition to being co-host of the Light Years podcast, Saam is tasked with running Creator Growth at Playback, an interactive sports streamer app. This means that a lot of this millennial's waking hours are spent on trying to figure out the sports viewership habits of Zoomers. This is the foundation of our conversation in this pod: What's up with young people? What programs are they gravitating to and why? And are their habits upending traditional notions of what “mainstream” media even is? But first, true to Bay Area form, we start with expressing our annoyance at the conventional takes of Purdy-hating, “NFL Film Watchers.” Topics include…* “Film Watchers” don't have an edge on the data* Is NFL Twitter worse for the fake smart takes than NBA Twitter* How the beat writer has to pretend to not care if the team loses * Ya, I cared when the Warriors lost* My regret over my ESPN the Magazine Draymond “hit piece”* How ESPN cut the Nike loses Steph Curry article from the Magazine* Will Compton farting at the Washington Post over his Bussin' with the Boys Trump interview * Legacy media trying to recap these Trump and Harris Youtube show interviews* The filming over everything makes athletes more paranoid in the locker room now.House of Strauss is a reader-supported publication. We do a quick analysis of the most recent election (featuring some insightful observations from our friend and former United Democratic Club president Bobak Esfandiari) before getting into an EXHAUSTIVE analysis of the state of the upcoming mayoral race. We examine the case *for* and the case *against* each of the candidates (and potential candidates... *PLURAL*) and how the heck Ranked Choice Voting will play into their strategies. This episode is super long (our longest ever!), but holy cow there's a lot of candidates!

Given the recent vibe shift, I figured I'd ring up Light Years co-host Saam Esfandiari to discuss the Draymond-fueled run of good play plus a variety of other topics in media. Discussion includes but is not limited to…* Which hurt Bay Area fans more: The 2024 Super Bowl loss, or the Warriors losing Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals?* Draymond Green, the man you cannot quit* Reflecting on Draymond's career and how so many expected him to be washed up by now* What's with this report about the Warriors exploring a LeBron trade?* Pat McAfee vs. Bill Simmons feud and why Youtube can't work on television * Has Youtube overtaken television?* Is this actually a bad time for aspiring sports media creators? Or are there more opportunities?

This pod includes discussion of, but is not limited to: * How do you feel about dumping Jordan Poole for Chris Paul?* How does Chris Paul feel about it?* Are we going to rip Bob Myers on the way out, Boston media style? * The Warriors never really develop their draft picks. Their fault? * Are draft picks a shakier (less successful) proposition in this era? * What's the take on Zion Williamson's porn-tinged fall from grace?* Is Zion getting too much grief for the porn lady's accusations?* Was Ja Morant's suspension too light?* Who'd you rather trade for: Zion Williamson or Ja Morant?* All good draft analysts should be weirdos * We're all obsessed with Dean on the Draft, who once wrote a paper on dating market inefficiencies

Conversation topics include but aren't limited to…* The Ricky fans are broken; The Warriors fans…less so* How to make fans characters in your pod universe* I hate being wrong about sports takes. Saam and Spike think it's key to not fear this* Is “loser energy” real? Are certain highly paid, incredibly successful athletes…losers?* Can it be possible that the fans care more about the outcome than players?* Does Doc Rivers have loser energy?* Was Joel Embiid maliciously taken out of context when quoted saying, “Me and James, we can't win alone”?* Is the normie take correct and Draymond Green really did doom the Warriors' season by punching Jordan Poole?* At 1:04:45 we discuss an accidentally hilarious article by an SF Gate writer who attended a Dave Chappelle show in San Francisco and was aghast.

Can a man, in good conscience, feel validated by a 21 year-old's struggles? * The Wiseman Paradox: How can such a talented player, with good counting stats production, be so destructively bad?* Why NBA players might prefer to be called a “pussy” over “coward”* The Bay Area Media and propaganda: We know we're softer than other regions, but are we also more inclined to buy happy lies? * Why did veteran SF Chronicle reporter Connor Letourneau take a (probable) shot at Saam and his co-host Andy Liu? * What's grinding Saam's gears in this World Cup about American coverage of Iran? * Our takes on how U.S. player Taylor Adams dealt with some hostile questioning. Our takes on the takes in response. * Is it permissible for an American to say “Eye-Ran” instead of “Ee-Rahn”?* Our unvarnished takes on the U.S. women's soccer team getting half the USMNT prize money. How sexist are we? Or are we nuanced? Listen and find out. * Who runs the Bay: Gians, Niners or Warriors?

An argument could be made that Kent Bazemore was the most important offseason acquisition not named "Russell" or "Westbrook" for the Lakers. If nothing else, Bazemore feels like he has the highest chance of becoming the team's best two-way role player, and given how the Lakers seemingly sacrificed a lot of defense to help jumpstart the often sluggish offense during the last two seasons, any player with skills on both sides of the ball will be crucial. Is Bazemore capable of making that type of contribution? For more insight, the Kamenetzkys spoke with Sam Esfandiari and Andy Liu, who cover the Golden State Warriors as co-hosts of the Light Years podcast. They addressed questions like whether Bazemore's hot shooting in Golden State last year was real (yes), his defense meets the mark (depends on the assignment) and where his weaknesses lie (most loudly, on-court decisions). At times, Bazemore will frustrate the hell out of fans, but they'll also dig how hard he plays and his non-stop energy. If nothing else, they expect Bazemore to outplay his veteran's minimum contract by a solid margin, and is in a position to succeed with the Lakers. From there, Esfandiari and Liu assess where the Warriors currently stand in a seemingly wide open Western Conference. A lot hinges on the health of Klay Thompson, who's missed two consecutive seasons with significant injuries. But if he's back to form, they're both confident the Warriors can hang with anybody. Other teams discussed include the Denver Nuggets and Phoenix Suns.Hosts: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Esfandiari and Liu break down the positives and negatives of Kent Bazemore, and the often wild fluctuations in his play.SEGMENT 2: More on Bazemore, including his shooting and defensive strengths.SEGMENT 3: A look at the Warriors next season, along with a few other teams in the conference. The Lakers will do battle in the play-in game for the seven seed on Wednesday night against a hot Golden State Warriors and an even hotter Steph Curry. For a deep dive into the matchup, the Kamenetzkys spoke with Sam Esfandiari and Andy Liu from the Light Years podcast. How did the Warriors, who largely struggled during the first half of the season, reach playoff viability? Are they just Steph and his helpers, or more of a legit team? Who are the players beyond Steph and Draymond Green who matter most? Can Andrew Wiggins be counted on? Can the Warriors dictate style? How should the Lakers scheme against this foe? How should we regard this latest chapter of what's been a fantastic rivalry between Steph and LeBron James, two of the most influential players in league history? All this and more!!!Hosts: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Sam and Andy explain how the Warriors got their season back on track, the degree to which they're a one-man band, and the ways teams have, relatively speaking, slowed Steph.SEGMENT 2: Who are the key role players that must step up for the Warriors to pull an upset? Is this largely inexperienced roster ready for a high intensity moment?SEGMENT 3: LeBron recently declared Steph this season's MVP, a departure from what's often felt like a mutual but frosty respect. Was this psychological warfare on LeBron's part, sincere praise, or both? Either way, relish matchups like these, because they don't happen as often as fans would like.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.
