I think my superpower, if I have one, is that I will lean into things that scare me. I may appear fearless to other people, but I'm not. Trust me! I feel the fear, but I'm never going to run away from fear. I will lean into fear.Author's note: North Carolina, especially Asheville, but also including the broader region, was devastated by Hurricane Helene. Her latest project, "Open Secret," delves into a difficult subject—systemic child abuse and the corruption that allowed it to continue in North Carolina schools. Despite the heartbreaking topic, Kerry finds and showcases the resilience of individuals fighting to make a difference.Kerry's journey with this project began unexpectedly when she moved to North Carolina. Initially hesitant to take on another heavy subject, Kerry ultimately decided to lend her talents to highlight a story of immense courage. “The film really is about the courage to challenge something in your community that isn't working despite this being detrimental potentially to your own self,” she shared. What makes this project truly unique is Kerry's decision to raise funds through a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign on Wefunder. This approach allows people from all over the country to participate in the movement against abuse in schools. “Allowing people everywhere to invest in this film is a way of helping to maximize your audience, maximize the impact, maximize the reach,” she explained. By involving the community, Kerry aims to spark a national conversation and prevent future tragedies. This opportunity to invest in a project that combines social impact with powerful storytelling is rare, and Kerry's passion shines through every frame of her work. If you're moved by this story, consider joining the effort to support change—just as Kerry has done.tl;dr:* In today's episode, Kerry David shared her experience transitioning from working at Paramount Pictures and with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman to starting her own production company and directing impactful documentaries.* Kerry discussed her latest project, "Open Secret," which explores systemic abuse in North Carolina schools and the courage of community members who fought against the corruption that enabled it.* Kerry emphasized her superpower of leaning into fear, recounting a challenging decision to change filming locations for safety during her previous project, demonstrating her ability to balance courage with prudence.* The episode highlighted Kerry's initiative in founding the nonprofit Over and Above Africa, which supports anti-poaching efforts and raises awareness through film.* Kerry explained her decision to use crowdfunding on WeFunder for her latest film to involve and empower communities nationwide to tackle systemic issues beyond North Carolina. How to Develop Leaning into Fear As a SuperpowerKerry's superpower is her ability to “lean into fear.” She doesn't ignore or try to eliminate fear—instead, she faces it head-on, refusing to let it control her decisions or actions. This willingness to confront fear, rather than shy away from it, allows Kerry to push boundaries and take on challenging projects that make a difference in the world. One powerful example of Kerry leaning into fear came during the production of her last film. She and her crew were scheduled to travel from South Africa to Uganda, but just days before, a nearby kidnapping involving three British citizens left her in a state of intense fear for her team's safety. Despite initially wanting to go ahead, Kerry made the difficult decision to pivot and film in Vietnam instead. This decision, rooted in both courage and concern for her crew's safety, ultimately kept them out of harm's way.To develop this superpower, Kerry suggests several actionable strategies:* Evaluate the consequences of not acting. Consider how avoiding a fearful situation could lead to missed opportunities or negative outcomes.* Honor your moral compass. When you know something is the right thing to do, face the fear and act anyway.* Start with small acts of courage. Practicing courage when the stakes are low helps build confidence for larger challenges.* Accept that fear is normal. Understand that feeling fear doesn't mean you're weak—it's an opportunity to show strength by moving forward despite it.By following Kerry's example and advice, you can make leaning into fear a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. Feeling like you don't belong can be tough, but for some, it becomes a powerful motivator. That sense of not fitting in can ignite a drive to outwork everyone and prove your place. Instead of letting isolation hold you back, it pushes you to excel and rise above expectations, turning the feeling of being an outsider into a source of strength. As a trailblazing filmmaker and philanthropist, Kerry David has dedicated her career to amplifying untold stories and giving voice to the voiceless. With an innate curiosity and fearless spirit, she has navigated an unconventional path, from working with Hollywood icons to building a nonprofit that supports women on the frontlines of the poaching crisis in Africa. Today, Kerry discusses her fascinating career journey as a filmmaker and philanthropist and shares how she stumbled into the film industry. Join in as young leaders pose inquiries about life, personal development, and beyond! Quotes: “I realized that while we may express emotions more because we've been allowed to, men have equal emotions; they just aren't always encouraged to express them.” – Kerry David “Just because you can work with difficult people doesn't mean you have to.” – Kerry David “My worry is that with all of this short-form content, we'll lose something important. Kids' attention spans aren't there to invest in a film anymore. They're so used to the quick hits of dopamine or serotonin from doing a million things at once that they won't understand the beauty of just relaxing into something that might take two hours to reveal itself.” – Kerry David Takeaways: Cultivate a growth mindset by reframing "failure" as an opportunity for learning and development. Encourage this perspective in young people. Prioritize open communication and setting clear expectations when managing employees, especially those with differing work ethics. Find the balance between pushing people and allowing them to grow at their own pace. Invest time in long-form storytelling, whether through films, books, or other media. Counteract the trend of short attention spans by exposing young people to the value of immersive, emotional journeys. Reflect on your own work-life balance. Are you operating out of fear or a genuine desire to excel? Identify ways to dial back the intensity without compromising your passion. Foster a supportive community of women who can uplift, encourage, and challenge one another. Recognize the power of female solidarity and how it can transform individual and collective experiences. Conclusion: Cultivating resilience, emotional intelligence, and a growth mindset is essential for young people's development. These qualities help them navigate challenges, adapt to change, and approach life with confidence. By fostering these traits early on, we equip young individuals with the tools they need to thrive in both personal and professional environments. Ultimately, building these skills sets the foundation for a fulfilling and successful future.

The gang is back together for Episode 102 and the show has a new format. The show was recorded the night of the Emmy's and the evening of learning about the passing of Kobe Bryant. The crew comes to terms with the loss of an athlete and the role the Grammy's have in letting us know we are getting older. On the show this week, Michelle sat down the author, Kari Knutson, of the article than ran in the ASHA Leader about crying in your car. Is training social skills dehumanizing? Also, can you predict Dyslexia? We also have our SSPOD Shoutout, the SSPOD Due Process, the ASHA Spotlight, and the SSPOD Hot Take. The Discord is up and ready for people to interact with the crew 24/7. ----more---- SSPOD Shoutout: We want to know your #SSPODSHOUTOUT, like Kerry David, the owner of Join Hope Speaks. Kerry trains providers and gives therapy to those who need it in areas that may not have the resources. SSPOD Due Process: Do you have a complaint or need to vent, then you want to participate in the #SSPODDUEPROCESS. This week's due process comes from Talking With Tech's host, Rachel Madel. She is upset about the gatekeeping involved in getting AAC devices to our students who need it. Article #1: Dyslexia in children may be predictable. A study running in the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research look at the link of Phonological Awareness and the prediction of Dyslexia in Children. What do the results mean for your therapy setting? Article #2: Some have called ABA therapy just dog training for humans. What does training social skills really look like? Can it be dehumanizing? How can we change our therapy settings to be more open to all of our patients and students. Interview: In the ASHA Leader, an article called “Whats EQ Got to Do with It?” Kari Knutson wrote an article looking at stress management. Kari's first article in the ASHA Leader was edited and Kari found out the hard-way what an editors pen can do when the term “Cry in your car” was left in the article with no perspective or other information given. Kari talks the process of this article and her original intention about stress management techniques. ASHA Spotlight: Its time to look to your colleagues and get them nominated for the 2020 ASHA Awards. Make sure you are showing ASHA who deserves to be nominated. Hot Take: Matt takes the first hot take and takes aim at Internet Bullies.
