The whole group is back together this week.  Matt has a ton to unpack involving Cub Scout fundraisers (selfish self-promotion link below for Popcorn sales) and hikes, mandatory high school coach meetings, meeting Help Me Grow as a parent, and calling his local senators to fight for hearing aid insurance changes.  He was told a hearing aid for a child is considered cosmetic.  Michelle celebrates her eternal 24th birthday 10 years later by hiking across state lines and she is an aunt again for her 5th niece.  Michael spent the weekend with his nephews for the weekend.  His private practice has moved to about 50% in person and 50% tele- practice.  The group also responds to the news that Charlie Brown won't be airing on television this Halloween.                              On today's show, we discuss the backlog of educational evaluations and waiting on legal rulings and the link between language and spelling.  This week's Informed SLP looks at.  We also look at our SSPOD Shoutouts and Due Process.  The weekly news headlines return and the ASHA spotlight looks at what they have put out for stuttering.       The Discord is up and ready for people to interact with the crew 24/7 with a new website, www.discord.speechsciencepodcast.com. ----more---- SSPOD Shoutout: Do you know an SLP who deserves a digital fist bump or shout out?  We want to know your #SSPODSHOUTOUT, which is recognition for someone doing something awesome somewhere.  Bill Connors, a guru in our field has passed away.  Bill had a large presence on-line and was willing to reach out to help anyone who needed it in the Facebook groups he was part of.          A second shout-out goes to Smiles for Inclusion.  They are offering up a virtual 5K marathon with the goal to raise funds that will be used to provide resources for the most vulnerable children with special needs living in impoverished communities in rural areas of Kenya and Ghana.   Topic #1:    Due to the immediate closures of schools in the springtime, many children went without evaluations.  The crew discuss the impact of not completing an evaluation has on timelines and the student's success.       Topic 2: What should SLPs be doing with spelling in the classroom?  A new study looks at the indepth link between spelling and language.     The Informed SLP: We all know the struggle of figuring out the “active ingredients” for aphasia therapy. We consider dosage, number of trials and sessions, home programs, aphasia type, treatment approach, stimuli, types of cues…but it's still hard to know what makes aphasia therapy work.   ASHA Spotlight: How do we educate someone on the impact of stuttering? ASHA has a tool-kit for that.       Contact Email: speechsciencepodcast@gmail.com Voicemail: (614) 681-1798 Discord: https://discord.speechsciencepodcast.com   New Episode and Interact here: www.speechsciencepodcast.com podcast.speechsciencepodcast.com   Support Patreon – https://www.patreon.com/speechsciencepodcast   Rate and Review: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/speechscience-org-podcast/id1224862476?fbclid=IwAR3QRzd5K4J-eS2SUGBK1CyIUvoDrhu8Gr4SqskNkCDVUJyk5It3sa26k3Y&ign-mpt=uo%3D8&mt=2   Credits Intro Music: Please Listen Carefully by Jahzzar is licensed under a Attribution-ShareAlike License. After taking a month off in celebration of Matt's new daughter the crew returns with episode 127.  Therapy conversations are happening in the group's discord, jump in and let your voice be heard.  Matt talks about bringing his daughter home from the NICU and jumps into the Hot take about failures in paperwork that happened in the NICU.  He also found the magic word when discussing charting mistakes in the hospital that will get you answers, a root cause analysis.   Michael has more mask to mask therapy and has seen his teletherapy numbers begin to decline. He also discusses the evolution of his speech therapy room from a multi-use room to a dedicated space.  Michelle has completed her move to a new place .7 miles away from the previous place.  Michelle enjoyed the weekend by taking the family across stateliness to visit a local farm.                       On today's show, we discuss ethical or unethical encroachment of ABA into the realm of the SLP and we discuss the over reliance on standardized assessments.  This week's Informed SLP looks at how daily cognition training can keep the doctor away.  We also look at our SSPOD Shoutouts and Due Process. Dr. Heidi Alaskary has been named the lead co-chair for the T20 Task Force 6 on economy, employment and education in the digital age.          SSPOD Due Process:  Do you have a complaint or need to vent, then you want to participate in the #SSPODDUEPROCESS. This week, an anonymous listener asked why are therapists only using standardized assessment in decision making?  Matt, Michael, and Michelle dive into the diagnostic triangle and the importance or lack of importance of using only a standardized score to make decisions.  Matt talks about how he has added more in depth reporting and multiple standardized and not-standardized assessments which has caused his reports to swell to 10-16 page reports for and ETR (3 year re-evaluation).    Topic #1:    Researchers look to have identified a possible genetic link for stuttering and a potential link to dopamine receptors.  The next step is to trial a synthetic dopamine drug.  What impact does this have on therapy and does this mean we are just treating the symptoms of dysfluency?   The Informed SLP: Engaging in cognitive training every day may keep the doctor away!. Basak and colleagues found that cognitive training was equally effective in enhancing cognitive functioning in healthy adults and adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).   ASHA Spotlight: With ASHA Canceling its convention this year, the crew discuss future locations and the impact location will have on attendance.    Contact Email: speechsciencepodcast@gmail.com Voicemail: (614) 681-1798 Discord: https://discord.speechsciencepodcast.com   New Episode and Interact here: www.speechsciencepodcast.com podcast.speechsciencepodcast.com   Support Patreon – https://www.patreon.com/speechsciencepodcast   Rate and Review: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/speechscience-org-podcast/id1224862476?fbclid=IwAR3QRzd5K4J-eS2SUGBK1CyIUvoDrhu8Gr4SqskNkCDVUJyk5It3sa26k3Y&ign-mpt=uo%3D8&mt=2   Credits Intro Music: Please Listen Carefully by Jahzzar is licensed under a Attribution-ShareAlike License. After taking a week off for Labor Day the group returns to the airwaves.  Therapy conversations are happening in the group's discord, jump in and let your voice be heard.  Michael continues to transition to face to face therapy in his clinic has proven to be great for him as much as it has been for his clients.  Michelle must move, again, less than a month in at her current location.  However, on the positive side, they hadn't unpacked everything yet.  Matt has completed his last CEU hour needed to get his ACE award and he prepares to enter the delivery room for the latest edition to his family.                On today's show, we discuss the impact genetics and dopamine have on stuttering, the use of poetry in the therapy setting, and we look at Social Thinking and break down if it's too ableist. We also look at the news headlines including Big Brother and Blackout Drinking.  This week's Informed SLP looks at the why and how of working on writing.  We also look at our SSPOD Shoutouts and Due Process. Sandy Bennett is most deserving of this week's SSPODshoutout.  Sandy retires from speech and language therapy after contributing to it for 50 years.          SSPOD Due Process:  Do you have a complaint or need to vent, then you want to participate in the #SSPODDUEPROCESS. This week, an anonymous listener sends in the following situation.  A high school student working on /r/ and /l/ says the do not bother them, but teachers report that the student does not volunteer information and has cried during her presentations in March because someone asked her to repeat a phrase.  The therapist states the student is unmotivated in therapy.  Should therapy be continued or move to dismissal? Topic #1:    Researchers look to have identified a possible genetic link for stuttering and a potential link to dopamine receptors.  The next step is to trial a synthetic dopamine drug.  What impact does this have on therapy and does this mean we are just treating the symptoms of dysfluency?     Topic #2: Inferential and figurative language can be difficult to target in a therapy setting.  One SLP looks at adding Poetry to her therapy lessons.    Topic #3:   A study from an ABA group has come up again questioning the validity of the Social Thinking Curriculum.  Could there be some truth to the ABA concerns about evidence?  Should we be using Social Theory to cover up communication deficits or should we follow a less ableist look at Pragmatic Language?   The Informed SLP: The Why and How of Working on Writing. Two studies elucidate the importance of metacognitive processing times, auditory processing, higher-level language and wearing head gear as critical factors that directly influence one's ability to return to activities of daily living for individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI).   ASHA Spotlight: As schools return this week or next, ASHA has updated their school based resources.    Contact Email: speechsciencepodcast@gmail.com Voicemail: (614) 681-1798 Discord: https://discord.speechsciencepodcast.com   New Episode and Interact here: www.speechsciencepodcast.com podcast.speechsciencepodcast.com   Support Patreon – https://www.patreon.com/speechsciencepodcast   Rate and Review: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/speechscience-org-podcast/id1224862476?fbclid=IwAR3QRzd5K4J-eS2SUGBK1CyIUvoDrhu8Gr4SqskNkCDVUJyk5It3sa26k3Y&ign-mpt=uo%3D8&mt=2   Credits Intro Music: Please Listen Carefully by Jahzzar is licensed under a Attribution-ShareAlike License. Michael and Michelle have the week off, so Leigh Ann Porter, host of Speech Uncensored settles into the co-host chair this week with Matt.  Leigh Ann recounts her week in the clinical setting and the joy of seeing a patient returning to your caseload.  Matt's home health caseload continues to rise which means his free time continues to decrease.  Matt and Leigh Ann discuss the tests they enjoy when working with adults.  In the middle of the show, Matt had to run down a mouse in his house!   On today's show, we look at tools for dysphagia, the importance of counseling during therapy, and which states are failing IDEA.  This week's Informed SLP looks at perceptual ratings for dysarthric speech.  We also look at our SSPOD Shoutouts and Due Process.  The ASHA spotlight looks at the ASHA Connect Conference. Dr. Anthony Koutsoftas from Seton Hall University received a 1.4 million dollar federal grant for research in improving writing skills in special education.    SSPOD Due Process:  Do you have a complaint or need to vent, then you want to participate in the #SSPODDUEPROCESS.    Topic #1: With the rise of 3d printing companies have found ways to create new assistive tools for feeding therapy.  Obi a robot who can feed a patient to trays specially designed can help change our approach to feeding therapies.         Topic #2: A majority of states are failing to meet the minimum of IDEA.  Why are schools failing?  Is it directly linked to funding and will it improve anytime soon?         Topic #3: Counseling should be a bigger part of our therapy sessions, or so says a recent study.  Do you find yourself as an information counselor or one that helps identify our patients' wants and needs?           The Informed SLP: A downside to relying on perceptual ratings is that perceptual ratings alone don't usually qualify a child for speech services or provide a normative benchmark (other than normal/abnormal). But the authors of this study have created age-specific norms and cut-off scores for perceptual ratings that can be used in dysarthria assessments of school-aged children.   ASHA Spotlight: The ASHA Connect Conference is up and online till July 20th.    Contact Email: speechsciencepodcast@gmail.com Voicemail: (614) 681-1798 Discord: https://discord.speechsciencepodcast.com   New Episode and Interact here: www.speechsciencepodcast.com podcast.speechsciencepodcast.com   Support Patreon – https://www.patreon.com/speechsciencepodcast   Rate and Review: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/speechscience-org-podcast/id1224862476?fbclid=IwAR3QRzd5K4J-eS2SUGBK1CyIUvoDrhu8Gr4SqskNkCDVUJyk5It3sa26k3Y&ign-mpt=uo%3D8&mt=2   Credits Intro Music: Please Listen Carefully by Jahzzar is licensed under a Attribution-ShareAlike License. The show has been off the air for the past few weeks to allow for other voices to be heard on matters of significance.  We at Speech Science believe there is no room for racism and we will commit to do what we can to shed light and make changes in areas we can.  We condemn the murders of George Floyd and Breona Taylor and all those who are not named but are equally important.  We believe Black Lives Matter.        During this week's show, Matt has finished his Medicaid Billing and has stumbled upon the Harley Quinn show on the DC Universe App.  Michelle has returned to work and plans a move across the country to Kansas.  Michael has been educating himself and those around him about the impact of Black Lives Matter.  On Discord, you can interact directly with Matt, Michael, and Michelle.   On today's show, we look at the yearly ASHA Elections results, making parents rescind their rights to waive liabilities, special education and the return in the fall, and ASHA's response to Black Lives Matter and calls to end racism in our field. Also, is AAC another language?  What if this means we should be devoting upto 360 minutes per week to AAC development?  This week's Informed SLP update, they look at the teach back method.  We also look at our SSPOD Shoutouts and Due Process.  The ASHA spotlight looks at the yearly ASHA Elections.  We also replace the Hot Take with a Hot Seat   The Discord is up and ready for people to interact with the crew 24/7 with a new website, www.discord.speechsciencepodcast.com.  ----more---- SSPOD Shoutout: Do you know an SLP who deserves a digital fist bump or shout out?  We want to know your #SSPODSHOUTOUT, which is recognition for someone doing something awesome somewhere.  Martin Addison is this week's SSPOD Shoutout.  Martin passed away due to complications from COVID. You sat around in a circle and whispered a phrase until it got to the last person who then said it out loud, usually completely unrelated to the original message. But now it's time to forget what you learned on the playground and say that message out loud to make sure your partner hasn't got it twisted. Michelle and her family have been doing the best they can to get out of the house as much as possible into their yard. Michael and Matt talk about getting hair-cuts at home. On Discord, the talk has been about how to handle long-distance learning in the schools. Leanna Sherred from Expressable, an online speech and language therapy company, sat down with Matt to talk about ways to implement teletherapy. On today's show, we look at the 2020 Medicare outpatient coding changes, external memory aides, and changes to educational law based on Covid-19. This week's Informed SLP update, they look at the long term effects of concussion. We also look at our SSPOD Shoutouts and Due Process. The ASHA spotlight looks at what ASHA is doing for us during this time of the pandemic. We also replace the Hot Take with a Hot Seat The Discord is up and ready for people to interact with the crew 24/7 with a new website, www.discord.speechsciencepodcast.com. SSPOD Shoutout: Do you know an SLP who deserves a digital fist bump or shout out? We want to know your #SSPODSHOUTOUT, like our Military SLPs who participated in a countrywide social hour online. . SSPOD Due Process: Do you have a complaint or need to vent, then you want to participate in the #SSPODDUEPROCESS. Article #1: At the beginning of the year, Medicare changed the billing and coding for outpatient therapy. Michael talks about a change that has affected him since the start of the new year. Article #2: How does visual aides affect long term memory? Visual aids can lead to better recovery of information, but only if you are using them correctly. Michael breaks down how this looks for executive functioning. Article #3: A waiver may be introduced for schools affected by Covid-19. What does this mean for therapy minutes on an IEP? Interview: Leanne Sherred of Expressable sat down with Matt to talk Telepractice and ways to make it work. Leanne calls Austin, Texas home but studied Speech and Hearing Sciences at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and gained her Master's in Speech-language pathology from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. While her interest in speech prior to college was piqued by accents and dialects as it pertained to acting and performance, once she began studying in the field, her eyes were opened to the huge range of topics that an SLP can cover. She has worked in pediatric outpatient clinics, schools, early intervention, and home health. As many SLPs do, she found working with students, patients, and clients to be her favorite part, but dreaded the paperwork headache of insurance submissions and SO many denials. Her heart broke for families that were denied coverage, especially when out-of-pocket speech rates meant that the family would then potentially forgo the services all together. So with the combined brainpower of her husband, Nick - who has experience in the healthcare tech industry - and two other teammates, the vision for Expressable was created. A telepractice company, Expressable envisions a modern and affordable way for anyone who needs speech therapy to access it - with all the superb convenience of therapy at home and without breaking the bank. The Informed SLP: A recent study looked at the effects of a concussion. Post-concussion participants scored normal on the discrete cognitive-linguistic tests typically used. However, when shown an unfamiliar video, then given 5 minutes to write a narrative, the patients with post-concussion produced significantly fewer key story points. ASHA Spotlight: The crew celebrate ASHA's one-stop-shop for all information affecting SLPs and AuDs with the Covid-19 Pandemic. The crew continues to struggle with stay at home orders and balancing it with their therapy.   Michael has moved his private practice a teletherapy setting and he continues to identify ways to improve his therapy delivery.   Michelle is adjusting and facing the challenge of working from home while her husband works from home as well and having a young child at home.  Michelle's clinic remains closed but is making plans to open shortly.  Matt continues to change the way he is presenting therapy to his students from the school district and still is seeing elderly patients in the home setting.  On today's show we are talking the recent updates on the FDA and sterilization of masks, a study on paper versus cloth masks, looking at special education and kids falling through the cracks, and telepractice success stories.  Hours after recording this show, Battelle was approved to use the serialization process for masks.  On this week's Informed SLP update, they look at the research behind hearing aides and young children.  We also look at our SSPOD Shoutouts and Due Process.  The ASHA spotlight looks at what ASHA is doing for us during this time of pandemic.    The Discord is up and ready for people to interact with the crew 24/7.   SSPOD Shoutout: Do you know an SLP who deserves a digital fist bump or shout out?  We want to know your #SSPODSHOUTOUT, like front line workers and SLPs who are working with out Covid-19 positive patients.        SSPOD Due Process:  Do you have a complaint or need to vent, then you want to participate in the #SSPODDUEPROCESS.  This week's due process comes from the crew as they hate the way people use racial terms to name the current Covid-19.       Article #1: A recent study shows that the use of cloth masks have a higher infection rate than the surgical masks.  Also Ohio based Battelle has identified a way to sanitize N95 masks.  At the time of recording, they were awaiting FDA approval to disinfect up to 160,000 masks per day.  Hours after recording, the FDA gave them the approval needed.    Article #2: As we move education online, the role of the special education teacher and related staff becomes more difficult.  Recent articles look at the risk our students face of falling through the cracks of education.    Interview: Ayelet Marinovich is an SLP and the host of the Learn with Less Podcast.  On her show and in her books she addresses the challenges and realities of early parenthood, and the information you need to know about early childhood.   The Informed SLP: Keeping anything on a toddler that the toddler doesn't want there is one of life's great challenges. Hats, sunglasses, pants… the struggle is real. When you add hearing aids to that mix you'd better put on a hard hat because there may be things flying at your head. So if you work with toddlers who are Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing (DHH), you are 100% going to get parents coming in saying that they have the hearing aids, but the toddler just will not wear them.   ASHA Spotlight: COVID-19 has created many challenges to our daily lives. One of the ways ASHA can help you during this difficult time is to offer you free continuing education.  ----more---- Contact Email: speechsciencepodcast@gmail.com Voicemail: (614) 681-1798 Discord: https://discord.gg/3Tm5jrS   New Episode and Interact here: www.speechsciencepodcast.com podcast.speechsciencepodcast.com   Support Patreon – https://www.patreon.com/speechsciencepodcast   Rate and Review: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/speechscience-org-podcast/id1224862476?fbclid=IwAR3QRzd5K4J-eS2SUGBK1CyIUvoDrhu8Gr4SqskNkCDVUJyk5It3sa26k3Y&ign-mpt=uo%3D8&mt=2   Credits Intro Music: Please Listen Carefully by Jahzzar is licensed under a Attribution-ShareAlike License.
