In this episode of The Truth In This Art, I had the pleasure of speaking with horror scholar and freelance writer, Lea Anderson. Lea's work, especially at the intersection of Black feminism and monster theory, brings a fascinating and unique perspective to the genre. We dive into her FANGORIA column Eaten Alive, where she explores the devouring Other in horror, film, myth, and literature. Lea also shared her academic background and how Black feminist thought shapes her approach to analyzing horror films. We talked about the role of monsters in storytelling, touching on everything from Gremlins and Blade to the deeper human experiences that horror can reveal. This conversation was truly thought-provoking and offered an intriguing look into how horror helps us explore societal fears and tensions. If you're into the art of fear and cultural critique, this episode is one you won't want to miss! This program is supported in part by a grant from the Robert W. SEASON 20 BEGINS!!! We meet ICON of film and Hollywood costumes SANDY POWELL OBE!!!! We discuss her love of art, collaborating with legendary queer artists/creative minds Derek Jarman and Lindsay Kemp, a 25 year collaboration with choreographer Lea Anderson, and how art informs her costume design. Sandy is a multi award-winning Costume Designer who has won three Academy Awards, three BAFTA Awards for Best Costume Design, plus the recent honour of BAFTA Fellowship 2023, and a Costume Designers Guild Award.Londoner, Sandy, studied at St Martins School of Art and the Central School of Art and Design where she specialised in theatre design. She started her professional career in fringe with the National Theatre working on numerous productions including Orders of Obedience and Rococo. She went on to design sets and costumes for productions of Lumiere and Son, Bright Side and Culture Vulture. As a student and one of the leading lights of the international theatre scene she most admired was Lindsay Kemp, the gifted director, designer and performer. On impulse she spoke to him on the phone and said how much she wanted to work with him. After seeing samples of her work he asked her to join him in Milan as costume designer for his theatre company. During her 3 year spell with him she worked on Nijinsky which was a study of the start and madness of the great Russian dancer. She also designed the costumes for The Big Parade, a tragic- comic homage to the silent screen, and the stage and screen versions of A Midsummer Nights Dream. In 1985 she rapidly established herself in the world of video working on many pop promos with director Derek Jarman and with him on his film Caravaggio, and Zenith's For Queen and Country.Born in 1960, she was raised in south London, where she was taught to sew by her mother on a Singer sewing machine, and began experimenting with cutting and adapting patterns at a young age. Educated at Sydenham High School, she went on to complete an Art Foundation at Saint Martins in 1978, and in 1979 she began a BA in Theatre Design at Central School of Art and Design (now Central Saint Martins.)In 1981 she withdrew from her degree to assist a costume designer who worked for a fringe theatre company called Rational Theatre, and also began a long collaboration with Lindsay Kemp designing for him in Italy and Spain. In 1984 when, after a spell as a costume designer on music videos, she moved into the film industry. Her break came when the film director and stage designer Derek Jarman appointed her costume designer on his film, Caravaggio (1986), starring Tilda Swinton and Sean Bean. To date, Powell has worked as Costume Designer on over 50 films, including Orlando (1992);The Crying Game (1992); Interview with the Vampire (1994); Michael Collins (1996); The Wings of The Dove (1997); Hilary and Jackie (1998); The End of the Affair (1999); Gangs of New York (2002); Far From Heaven (2002); Sylvia (2003); The Aviator (2005); The Departed (2006); Shutter Island (2010) Hugo (2011) The Wolf of Wall Street (2013); Cinderella (2015); Carol (2015); Mary Poppins Returns (2018); and Living (2022). She has earned 76 award nominations and won 27 awards in her career, including Academy Awards for Shakespeare in Love (1998) and The Aviator (2004), a BAFTA Award for Velvet Goldmine (1998), and both an Academy Award and a BAFTA Award for The Young Victoria (2010).Follow @TheSandyPowell on Instagram. Thanks for listening!!! Orrow Bell is a London based dance artist. They make, perform, work as dramaturg, facilitator, and curator. Orrow's solo works have toured widely. As a performer, they worked with Tino Sehgal, Hussein Chayalan & Damien Jalet, Lea Anderson, Maresa von Stockert, Alessandro Sciarroni and Chiara Frigo amongts others. To me, Orrow is a quiet strength. The kind of strength that radiates from people who are fully, rootedly, themselves. Together we talked about queerness, failure being a systemic bullshit, lycra and blank on stage, the cosmos, being a recovering perfectionist, putting care alongside actions…. It is a dense and rich conversation you are about to listen to, it is bound to question your perspectives and angles… I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did!

BIO She also runs Kathakaars, a creative forum for aspiring dancers providing vocational training and offering a range of performance and choreographic opportunities to create a legacy of high quality artists Sonia Sabri is UK's leading Kathak dancer, amongst the brightest and most inspirational of British born dancer-choreographers working in the twenty-first century. Creating work that spans from the presentation of classical roots of Kathak to explorations of contemporary approaches, her productions reflect an appreciation of Western and Eastern cultures. She has created a fresh, unique style of Kathak by reinventing it from within, by pushing boundaries and generating work that is original in concept and exciting and relevant to today's audiences. As a dance artist, she is acclaimed for her enchanting stage presence, grace and musicality that enthral audiences both nationally and globally. She has secured an international reputation for collaboration across dance styles and art forms including work with pioneers Sarvar Sabri, Arlene Phillips CBE, Sir Trevor Nunn, Richard Alston, Lea Anderson, Shobana Jeyasingh, Nitin Sawhney, Rose English, Jonzi D, Jatinder Verma to mention a few. As well as touring with work created in Britain across the world she has been supported and commissioned by UKTI and British Council and independent bodies to create new work and lead meaningful learning and participatory projects. One of many highlights include her work in the Emirates touring with Kathakbox; leading movement based workshops and residencies for women only groups and especially from orthodox backgrounds; residencies with children with learning difficulties, and creation of new dance and live music works with girls. Sonia is the first female artist and female led dance company to have toured the Emirates and other parts of the Middle east. Sonia's art is the seed of all her outreach work in the community for different groups including women, young people and children, mothers and daughters, young families, elderly people through to working with women of mental and health concerns many of which referred by GPs. Some examples include working with women in some of the deprived areas in the country using movement and music as a way to share their personal experiences as a way of therapy. Providing a safe environment, emotive language of art and with Sonia's sensitive and sympathetic nature (derived from her personal experiences), women unveiled their inner most thoughts, challenges, concerns and broken dreams. Through carefully considered and bespoke arts programmes, residencies and workshops, Sonia has enabled many women to transform their lives. Some examples include - many have gone into education; have built confidence to communicate with their families about their inner most feelings / concerns which otherwise they feared to voice; change their lifestyle towards positive mental and physical health; build friendship circles to empower other women. Some who had lifelong dream to dance, sing, or play an instrument were provided a platform to do so and have now gone on to seek vocational training to develop their talent with some now performing in community and professional settings. Sonia has also trained library workers in community libraries and in health centres how to use the toolkit of Kathak dance and offer emotional and physical wellbeing, build child and parent relationships, and approaches to communicate with women of culturally sensitive backgrounds who often felt detached from main stream society. Where ever Sonia has delivered and continues to deliver these programmes, there is a legacy of empowered women who are now helping other underrepresented women. Sonia works with women and girls of all backgrounds and experiences and many are from the muslim community. She is considered a role model nationally and not exclusively for the South Asian community given the ground-breaking work she has developed through her artistic practice. There are very few women of her faith and cultural heritage and a proud British Indian leading the way for the future generation. In addition, Sonia is a teacher of Kathak and regularly undertakes various workshops, lecture- demonstrations and residencies in both national and international venues. She is accredited by the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD). Recently she was commissioned by BBC Young Dancer 2017 as one of the mentors and choreographers for the grand finals.
