SEASON 2 - EPISODE 89 - ELLEN MIROJNICK - COSTUME DESIGNER Costume designer Ellen Mirojnick (OPPENHEIMER, WALL STREET, FATAL ATTRACTION) joins us on this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast. A born and bred New Yorker, Ellen jumped right into costume design on a low-budget feature in New Orleans where she quickly (and easily) took to the role as the department head. She later spent two films working and studying under famed costume designer Sandy Powell before being recruited by director Adrian Lyne to work on FATAL ATTRACTION (one of many films in which she would work with actor Michael Douglass). During our discussion of OPPENHEIMER, Ellen shares the notes she received from director Christopher Nolan that informed her approach to the design of the film's costumes and reflects on the challenge posed by needing to design costumes that could be shot in black-and-white in one setup and in colour in the next. Ellen also reflects on the challenge of designing the film's costumes to seamlessly reflect changes in time without losing the characters across numerous decades of story. Towards the end, we discuss the importance of creating costumes that are not only right for the period, but right for the actors who need to wear them. - This episode is sponsored by Godox

Her break came when the film director and stage designer Derek Jarman appointed her costume designer on his film, Caravaggio (1986), starring Tilda Swinton and Sean Bean. MDJ Script/ Top Stories for Jan 16th Publish Date: Jan 12th Commercial: Henssler :15 From the Henssler Financial Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Tuesday, January 16th and Happy 43rd Birthday to MLB future HOF Albert Pujols. *** 01.16.24 – BIRTHDAY – ALBERT PUJOLS*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Elton John auctioning art from Atlanta home via Christie's starting Feb. 21 Education Department error could lower U.S. students' financial aid amounts Metro Atlanta will get up to 400 new electric vehicle charging ports All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Elton John auctioning art from Atlanta home via Christie's Elton John is set to auction part of his extensive art collection from his recently sold Atlanta home. The auction, beginning on February 21 at Christie's, is expected to generate at least $10 million. John, who recently retired from performing, sold his Buckhead condo last fall for $7,225,000. The items for auction include a custom Damien Hirst, an 18th-century costume by Sandy Powell, and silver leather boots with E and J embossed. The decision to sell is emotional for John, who, along with husband David Furnish, is culling the collection. The auctions will be held both live and online, showcasing different aspects of John's life and collection. A public exhibition in New York City will precede the auctions from February 9 to 21, featuring a pop-up gift shop with John's merchandise. STORY 2: Education Department error could lower U.S. students' financial aid amounts An error by the U.S. Education Department in calculating financial aid could result in lower subsidies for students. The mistake involves not updating a key part of its aid calculation index for inflation, which has risen approximately 20% since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. This affects the amount of a family's income that is "protected" in the adjusted gross income calculation, which determines a student's financial aid need. Unless this is corrected, families may appear to have more resources than they do, leading to less financial aid for students. The issue was first reported in late 2021 and the department is currently determining how to address it. STORY 3: Metro Atlanta will get up to 400 new electric vehicle charging ports The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) has received a $6.1 million federal grant to install 300 to 400 electric vehicle (EV) charging ports across 20 counties in metro Atlanta, particularly in areas where such infrastructure is currently limited. The move comes as part of efforts to prepare for the upcoming EV revolution and ensure equitable access to charging facilities. Charging at these new stations will be free. The grant is part of a wider $622.6 million fund allocated by the U.S. Department of Transportation under the bipartisan infrastructure law for nationwide charger installations. The first chargers under this program are expected to be operational in 12 to 18 months. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back Break: ESOG – GCPS STORY 4: Shipping containers will soon house struggling Atlantans A new affordable housing complex in downtown Atlanta, constructed from repurposed shipping containers, is nearing completion at 184 Forsyth Street. Donated by the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Department, these containers were initially used as patient overflow facilities during the COVID-19 surge in Macon. The 40-unit community, built in just 60 days at a cost of $125,000 per unit, aims to address homelessness and connect vulnerable populations with resources. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens praised the project as an innovative solution for rapid-affordable housing. The Forsyth Street site will offer permanent housing and wrap-around services, with residents expected to move in next month. The mayor plans to expand similar shipping container communities across the city to combat homelessness. STORY 5: Estate of now-infamous Murdaugh family goes up for action The South Carolina estate of the notorious Murdaugh family, known as the Moselle Estate, is going up for auction with a minimum bid of $1.1 million. Alex Murdaugh, the former resident, was convicted of murdering his wife and son in 2021 and is currently appealing his sentence. The property has changed hands several times since the crime. Proceeds from the initial sale went toward legal fees, the surviving son, a local bank, and victims of a 2019 boat crash linked to the family. The estate, which features a mix of classic charm and modern amenities, includes a 5,300-square-foot home on 21 acres. The auction will take place on February 15. We'll be back in a moment. Break: DRAKE – INGLES 3 STORY 6: This half-eaten sandwich is up for sale for $1.3M on Facebook On Facebook Marketplace, a half-eaten sandwich is making waves with a staggering $1.3 million price tag. Listed as "new" by a cheeky seller from Leicester, England, the grilled sandwich, described as "very crispy," is up for sale because the vendor couldn't finish it. This quirky listing follows a trend of bizarre food items being sold on the platform, such as a man offering "the saddest lunch ever" – a baked potato drowning in baked beans, eaten off a glass microwave plate. The eccentricity of these listings has sparked amusement and commentary on social media. STORY 7: Michigan coronation is most-watched title game in four years The Michigan-Washington College Football Playoff National Championship game marked a four-year high in ratings and viewership. Averaging a 12.3 rating and 25.05 million viewers across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, and ESPN Deportes, the game saw a 41% increase in ratings and a 45% increase in viewership compared to the previous year. Michigan's victory delivered the second-largest audience of the college football season and ranked fourth in viewership among all non-NFL sportscasts since 2018. The full College Football Playoff averaged 23.6 million viewers, up 15% from the previous year, and marked the highest average since the 2017-18 season. The entire 43-game bowl season averaged a 2.3 rating and 4.48 million viewers, showcasing a 5% increase in viewership over the previous year. Ray MartinWelcome to Eyes & Teeth season 13. The RATSThe Grand Order of Water Rats is a charitable organisation formed by entertainers in 1889 and 133 years later they found Steve Hewlett. If you delve into the history books of variety, many names from there will crop up mentioning the GOWR. Names such as Wee Georgie Wood, Little Tich, Ventriloquists Fred Russell & Peter Brough, and comedians Sandy Powell or George Martin the casual comedian. Some Water Rats bred natural entertainers and today's guest is just that. He is a talented gent who has written comedy for TV & Radio shows and their stars, he has acted, written songs and performed with the best. Today I talk about George Martin with one of his sons to find out what it was like to be the child of a brilliantly successful comedian on the circuit in the 1950's & 60's, a King Rat but to him he was purely just DAD.Welcome to eyes and Teeth Ray Martin

Some comedy on budget record labels. Last chance plays for some, as they are a little ropey. We start with a right cheery number from comedian Bobby Comber- La-di-da-di-da. A popular entertainer through the 20s and 30s. I can find little about his history online. Plenty of history about Sandy Powell. Here he gives us Sandy the Doctor. Next Harry Leader and his Orchestra- Little man you've had a busy day(1934). Leader was a prolific band leader who operated under many different names and had a long career. He was particularly associated with the programme Workers Playtime. Vocals are by Dawn Davis. She sang with a few British bands in the 1930s and 40s, as well as a solo and in a duo. She notably dueted with Al Bowlly. She moved to Australia in the late 40s but returned to England in 1955. Unfortunately she was unavailable to get back into the entertainment business. She died in 1993, aged 83. Madame Nina Rae- Anne Laurie(1921) Other than being born in 1878 in Glasgow I could find nothing about her. Billy Williams, we've played before. Here he sings I'll lend you my best girl. Australian born he had a highly successful career in British Music hall. He died in 1915. Tommy Handley was another very successful comedian. Especially during WW2 in his radio programme ITMA- Its that man again. He gives us 'How many pips are there in a pomegranate'(1929). Charlie Higgins- Down in the field where the buttercups grow. Another popular comedian from the 1930s. He played the London Palladium three times. He billed himself as 'A fool if only he knew it.' Ernest Butcher- I sing as I limp along(1935). A character actor from 1930s to 1950s. Nothing really online that talks about his singing. We have two of his records in the F.S collection. This track is self penned. Savoy Havana band- Dear love, my love. They were the resident band at the Savoy Hotel in London, 1921 to 27. Started by Bert Railton, they did the British Premier of Gerswin's Rhapsody in Blue. We get all modern to end the show. Troubled Welsh diva with Dorothy Squires- I walk behind you(1953). Composed by her partner of the time Billy Reid. She was successful throughout the fifties and into the 60s but her faded away and she died in 1998. We finish with John Kirby- Undecided and the spacey Dawn on the desert-1938 and 1939. Kirby started on the trombone, switched to tuba and ended up on the double bass. He played in many band and started his own well thought of jazz ensemble and orchestra. He sadly died young in 1952.

A fashion designer with an artist’s eye for bold, uncompromising color, Roksanda Ilincic studied architecture in Belgrade before following her dream to move to London and enrol at Central Saint Martins. There, she became part of a new generation of design talent that went on to transform London Fashion Week and the very definition of red-carpet dressing. Loved by women of substance the world over – her most recent front-row guests featured writer and activist Sinéad Burke and costume designer Sandy Powell, alongside actors Cate Blanchett and Vanessa Redgrave – Roksanda’s dresses have impact without ever having to shout. “It’s not standing out in an aggressive way or a shouting way, it's standing out in a beautiful, elegant, chic and understated way. I want to give women a certain soft power, a certain shelter and protection. It’s about being their friend, rather than being a dictator.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Stephen Schwartz, composer and lyricist of Wicked and Godspell, on his spectacular new stage musical about Moses, The Prince of Egypt, based on the 1998 DreamWorks animation and featuring his hit song When You Believe. Leading costume designer and three-time Oscar winner Sandy Powell joins us in the studio. Not content with merely garnering BAFTA and Oscar nominations for her work this year on Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, Powell spent both ceremonies asking fellow nominees to sign her outfit, part of a fundraising campaign to help preserve Derek Jarman’s cottage in Dungeness. Powell worked with the director, writer and artist on several films and the suit she wore to the ceremonies will be auctioned as part of the appeal. Acclaimed Irish folk singer song writer Lisa O’Neill talks to John Wilson about the importance of traditional songs, storytelling and politics to her music, as she performs this week at “Imagining Ireland” at the Barbican in London, an event celebrating the groundswell of women’s voices in Irish literature, music and poetry. Presenter: John Wilson Producer: Simon Richardson
Visual storytelling in cinema stretches to every department, including costumes. What characters wear says as much about them as any other element, and telling the story through clothing is as vital as telling it through photography, production design, sound design and all other aspects of the trade. Costume designer Sandy Powell is a legend in this regard. She’s racked up 14 Oscar nominations and three wins throughout her 30-plus-year career for films like "Shakespeare in Love," "Hugo" and "The Favourite." Halfway through his own career, Christopher Peterson began collaborating with Powell as an assistant on projects like “The Departed,” “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “Carol.” The two took up the reins together on Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” a decades-spanning epic about the life and times of Teamsters union boss Jimmy Hoffa. On this episode of “The Call Sheet,” Powell and Peterson discuss working with limited historical details, dig in on the particulars of specific outfits in the film and much, much more.
Costume designer Sandy Powell has been nominated for 12 Oscars and won three. Christopher Peterson earned an Emmy nomination for Boardwalk Empire. Together they designed the clothing for Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman—for the stars as well as the extras, covering several decades. Leonard and Jessie were fascinated to hear their experience on this massive endeavor and their impressions of Scorsese, who appreciates what the right wardrobe can do for his film—and his actors.

Writer/Director JEFF FRY is back with us live talking about his WWII short film KRIEG and some upcoming film festivals where you can catch this amazing film. Listen as Jeff talks about his search for the perfect international cast, locating authentic uniforms, planes, vehicles and other equipment, overcoming the challenges of thefts of rare original items which forced him to build a WWII radio similar to that used by the Resistance, the ten-year process of script to screen, as well as research into the military aspects of the war from the perspective of the Nazis, Allies and Resistance fighters. A Herculean undertaking that pays off in spades when you see the end product. And you'll hear excerpts of our exclusive interview with director NEIL BURGER talking about the #1 box office movie - THE UPSIDE! Last week you heard what Kevin Hart had to say about tackling a more dramatic role with more sobering and restrained humor. Now hear what his director has to say. Covering everything from what made him accept the challenge to remake an internationally acclaimed and well-received film ("The Intouchables") but with his own vision, to cinematography and production design, to the research that went into exacting as authentic as possible portrayal of a quadriplegic and that of his aides, Neil goes in-depth on all. Unfortunately, we ran out of time and didn't get to our exclusive interview with costume designer SANDY POWELL and production designer JOHN MHYRE talking about the magic of MARY POPPINS RETURNS, but you can listen to it now on www.BehindTheLensOnline.net. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
Sarah Cook talks to actor Mark Gatiss about his role in Yorgos Lanthimos's new movie, The Favourite. The latest from Greek auteur Yorgos Lanthimos (Dogtooth, The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer) is a delightfully witty and physical comedy. It’s the early 18th Century, England are fighting the French and Olivia Colman’s Queen Anne in poor health. Vying for the Queen’s affections are her devoted friend, Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz), and Lady Sarah’s cousin, Abigail (Emma Stone). Newly arrived at the palace and aware the Queen is charmed by her personality, the wily Abigial sees a chance to restore the social status that has been battered by her father’s ruinous wagers. What follows is a riotous game of one-up-womanship, directed with a fierce, pacy intelligence by Lanthimos and superbly complemented by Robbie Ryan’s cinematography, Sandy Powell’s costume designs and Fiona Crombie’s spectacular sets. At the centre of this wickedly amusing tale are the three powerhouse performances from Weisz, Stone and, especially, Colman, who won the Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival for her uproarious portrayal of Queen Anne. The Favourite is in cinemas now.
We review this tale of court intrigue set in the early 18th century. Two women (Sarah Duchess of Marlborough, played by Rachel Weisz, and Abigail Masham, played by Emma Stone) vie for the attention of English Queen Anne (Olivia Coleman). With costumes designed by Sandy Powell and a historically accurate view of female power and sexuality, we find a lot to praise!
Seán thought he wouldn't like ORLANDO... until he saw it. Shame he didn't do the reading. Brian, of course, did. Based on Virginia Woolf, it's no frou-frou drawing room drama, but a time-traveling, gender-bending history of sexuality, Foucaudian avant la lettre. Alien androgyne Tilda Swinton is a man who becomes a woman somewhere over the course of his/her 400 years of life. Lush, funny, philosophical and featuring plenty of wigs, Sally Potter's 1992 masterpiece turns the wacky weirdness of the original text into a piece of filmmaking unlike any other. This is one costume drama where the drama is really in the costumes: doublets, farthingales, corsets, breeches and perruques, all designed by the ever-resourceful Sandy Powell and prompting us to ask whether clothes really do make the (wo)man? Social constructivists, ahoy! It's time to take down gender essentialism & have a blast doing it. Clips from the film presented according to fair use policy. British Costume Designer Sandy Powell has won three Oscars for her movie creations and she was Oscar nominated for her most recent designs for Cinderella and Carol. Celebrate the SCORSESE exhibition and join one of the master filmmaker’s long time collaborators, BAFTA and Oscar winning designer Sandy Powell OBE, as she delivers a masterclass on costume design and gives a fascinating insight into her extraordinary career. From working closely with Scorsese on films including The Aviator, Gangs of New York and Wolf of Wall Street, to the collaborative process of designing costume for celebrated films such as Carol and Cinderella, the acclaimed designer will appear at ACMI for a special night of conversation hosted by Associate Professor Jessica Bugg (School of Fashion and Textiles, RMIT) to explore her iconic work, her influences, and her creative partnerships with Scorsese and a range of legendary filmmakers. Powell, who has won the Academy Award for Costume Design three times for Shakespeare in Love (1998), The Aviator (2004), and The Young Victoria (2009), and has been nominated a total of twelve times, is renowned for her ability to form long lasting, creative collaborations with a diverse range of auteurs. Across a career spanning over 3 decades, Powell has helped shape the celebrated films of Derek Jarman (Caravaggio, The Last of England), Neil Jordan (The Crying Game, Michael Collins, The Butcher Boy), Todd Hayes (Velvet Goldmine, Far From Heaven, Carol) and of course, Martin Scorsese. When it comes to working with Scorsese – with whom she has worked with on six films to date – Powell says there is always serious attention to detail. "When an actor comes onto the set wearing a costume for the first time, he'll actually go and touch them and touch the cloth," she states. "He's always very interested." Providing a rare insight into her interconnected work with such celebrated directors, Powell will explore her own creative processes and will look back over a body of work that has positioned her as one of the most highly acclaimed designers in the film industry in this very special masterclass event.
The 55-year-old Brit, who is famous for her research and attention to detail, already has three Oscars to her name. Only four costume designers have more.
The WOW factor is at an all-time high with this week's BEHIND THE LENS! First up, hear from the innovative and visionary director Timur Bekmambetov and his new project "Screenshare Filmmaking" – verite storytelling set entirely on the screens of digital devices – and the workshop he is hosting at SXSW this year. There will be eight two-person teams chosen to participate; four from the United States who will be brought to Austin to SXSW to work in-person, and four teams from overseas who will participate remotely. This is an opportunity not to be missed. So filmmakers, take a listen to today's show and hear more about the workshop from Timur, then go to www.screensharefilms.com to apply before February 24, 2016! This is truly a golden ticket for filmmakers! And then we've got a half hour that all my TCM Party pals out there will love as Susan Claassen joins me at the midpoint of the show to talk about costume design, this year's Oscar costume contenders and, the legendary Edith Head. For over 12 years, Susan has travelled the country with her one woman show, "A Conversation with Edith Head" and it is a phenom for classic film fans. As you can see from the show banner below, Susan and Edith could be twins separated by birth. Her knowledge of Edith Head, film and costuming is staggering and she shares it with us on BEHIND THE LENS. One of my favorite moments today? Susan reading a letter from "Edie" to attendees/presenters at the 40th Academy Awards about "appropriate attire." And in keeping with a costume design thread, take a listen to excerpts of my exclusive interview with Sandy Powell, a double Oscar nominee this year for CINDERELLA and CAROL. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
