Welcome to a new episode of “Five Minute Chinese.” In this episode, I discuss the pros and cons of learning languages by watching TV shows. While it's often seen as a fun and fast way to learn, it may not be suitable for everyone, especially beginners. I introduce the concept of 'comprehensive input,' which refers to language materials that are mostly understandable with some new elements. I share my personal experience of watching a Japanese drama (called 地面師たち or Tokyo Swindlers) and explain why it didn't significantly improve my Japanese due to my current proficiency level. I also recommend focusing on listening materials that match your language level to make '磨耳朵' (ear training) more effective. Additionally, I talk about Maayot, a useful website for learning Chinese through level-appropriate content. My goal with this podcast is to provide simple yet natural language input to help learners practice effectively. If you find 5-Minute Chinese helpful, please subscribe, share, and support the show. This radio interview is an abbreviated version of the full video interview, available with ASL interpretation on Youtube.Think back to your favorite childhood TV show—was it “Blue's Clues”? “Little Bear”? “Winnie the Pooh”? Animated TV shows are important for kids because they can teach them to read, draw, spell, and talk. Plus, the ways these shows tell stories and create colorful, fictitious worlds can broaden children's knowledge and capacity to imagine. But children's shows aren't accessible to all deaf children, which means they could miss out on a common learning experience. Among other things, that can set kids back in learning both American Sign Language (ASL) and English language skills during their formative early childhood years.Melissa Malzkuhn is third-generation Deaf and the founder and director of the Motion Light Lab at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. Her lab is creating ASL-focused children's media that is made by and for the Deaf community, using motion capture technology, avatars, animation, and signing storytellers. She talks with guest host Arielle Duhaime-Ross about ASL access in childhood, the science of learning, and how she's creating “Here Comes Mavo!”—the first animated TV series with signing characters.Transcripts for this segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Not all children learn language in the same way. Neurotypical children usually learn through analytic language processing (also known as bottom-up processing), while children with autism who are verbal, are more likely to use gestalt language processing (often referred to as top-down processing). With gestalt language processing, children learn language in chunks or phrases, with single words only appearing at later stages as they learn to break down and recombine these gestalts (or language chunks) to create new, spontaneous utterances. Joining us today to break down the ins and outs of gestalt language processing and how adults can learn to adapt to a child's unique style of learning, is Jesse Ferrell, a Certified Speech Language Pathologist (CCC-SLP) who has worked with all kinds of students, including those with autism. In our conversation Jesse expands on gestalts, where children pick them up, and how you can learn to recognize them. She also unpacks the concept of echolalia and how it relates to gestalt language processing, before examining how our understanding of echolalia has shifted in recent years and how we can better support children when we embrace their language processing style. Communication between children and their parents isn't always easy, but sometimes the most important thing is simply showing your child that you want to connect with them. To hear all of Jesse's knowledgeable insights on communication, language, and connection, be sure to tune in today!   Key Points From This Episode: An overview of gestalt language processing, also known as top-down processing. The prevalence of gestalt language processing in children with autism. Analytic language processing and the development you can expect in neurotypical children. How gestalt language processors differ from typical analytic language processors. An explanation of gestalts, also known as language chunks. Examples of how children use gestalts and learning how to recognize it. How to better understand what your child is trying to communicate when they use gestalts. The concept of echolalia and how it relates to gestalt language processing. An overview of the two main types of echolalia: immediate and delayed echolalia. The shift in how echolalia is being viewed, from non-functional to functional. Recognizing the style that a child is using to learn language. Adapting to a child's style of language learning. Signs that can help a parent recognize whether their child is a gestalt processor. How stress can make your child revert to earlier gestalts. Hola!We have made it to episode 30! This episode brings together our knowledge from the last 4 lessons and earlier episodes too.We have a quiz as always, this time focussing on vocabulary, and then we have a dialogue using lots of language from the last 4 lessons especially, but we also recap a lot of the basics learnt in the first few episodes - let's hope you haven't forgotten them! It's a long one, and we debated splitting it and using some of it in the bonus episode, however we want to make as much free content for you as possible. It took us a long time to record this one as there were planes flying past our house every 3 minutes! So we hope you appreciate the effort haha.Let us know how you scored out of 20 and whether you managed to follow the conversation! If you do want to support the show, as well as rating and sharing it, you can can consider becoming a member of our Patreon community.
