Reader and listener discretion is advised.“[They say that] Thailand is the only country that has never been colonized. But it's not true!” Kornkanok “Pup” Khumta, an activist from Isaan, argues that the myth of sovereignty hides a colonial order, where Bangkok defines language, history, development, and which bodies are allowed to exist. Isaan, she says, is Lao in language and culture, and the borders that separate people along the Mekong are still newer than the state admits. “People in Isaan, we have been brainwashed to be Thai people,” she says, adding that even the word “Thai” itself is a recent invention. Pup describes Siam's consolidation as violent, then sustained through schooling that punishes local speech and replaces regional memory with a Siam-centered story. The same center–periphery structure shapes “development” as extraction: resources flow to Bangkok while poverty in the northeast is treated as normal. Generations migrate to the capital for education and wages, leaving Isaan hollowed out, a place many return to only for Songkran or New Year. At Thammasat University, Pup expected democratic critique but instead found classmates aiming for bureaucratic power. She pushed back, arguing provincial governors should be elected, not appointed from Bangkok. After the 2014 coup, she tested the regime's limits with quiet protest and was arrested, learning that visibility alone can trigger punishment. Later, after refusing to sign a pledge to stop political activity, she was sent into prison, and processed through searches that turned discipline into bodily violation. That experience sharpened her feminism. She framed organizing around bodily autonomy, using taboo-breaking protest—speaking openly about female body parts and insisting democracy includes control over one's body. Pup then moved to extend her politics beyond borders, rejecting ASEAN's “non-interference” policy as a cover for authoritarian cooperation, including support for Myanmar's military. For her, constitutional change in Thailand is the hinge between refuge and repression—and survival requires joy: “I believe in fun,” she says, because despair is also a weapon. “We are at the point that we don't have to belong to any state,” she says. “I mean, we can just treat each other as a humans and we can all come together against all forms of repression.”

VOV1 - Cảnh sát Thái Lan hôm 16/4 thông báo tiếp tục triệt phá một đường dây lớn, thu giữ số ma túy trị giá hơn 300 triệu Bạt (Baht), tương đương khoảng 9,3 triệu đô la Mỹ.Trung tướng Wattana Yeejeen, Tư lệnh Cảnh sát Vùng 1 mới đây cho biết, lực lượng chức năng đã tiến hành một chiến dịch truy quét nhằm vào mạng lưới ma túy có tên “Bank Phetchabun”. Nhóm tội phạm này bị đưa vào diện theo dõi đặc biệt sau khi giới chức Thái Lan phát hiện manh mối trong quá trình mở rộng điều tra một vụ án ma túy tại tỉnh Ayutthaya hồi tháng 3/2026.Theo Tư lệnh cảnh sát Vùng 1, nhóm tội phạm này hoạt động với phương thức rất tinh vi. Các đối tượng sử dụng một đoàn xe, gồm xe dẫn đường, xe cảnh giới và xe chở hàng để vận chuyển hơn 9,5 triệu viên ma túy tổng hợp đến kho chứa tại tỉnh Ayutthaya (cách thủ đô Bangkok khoảng 80km) vào ngày 13/4, đúng dịp lễ hội Songkran. Kho chứa ma túy được ngụy trang thành kho chứa me nhằm che đậy hành vi phạm tội.Giới chức Thái Lan đã tiến hành vụ đột kích vào rạng sáng ngày 14/4 và bắt giữ 3 nghi phạm. Một đối tượng khác, được cho là người điều phối hoạt động của đường dây đã bỏ trốn. Cảnh sát đang hoàn tất thủ tục để ban hành lệnh truy bắt. VOV1 - Trung tâm điều hành chống lừa đảo trực tuyến Thái Lan mới đây ghi nhận hơn 7.300 vụ lừa đảo trực tuyến trong tuần vừa qua, gây thiệt hại lớn về tài sản. Giới chức Thái Lan đã phát đi cảnh báo về một số thủ đoạn lừa đảo phổ biến trong dịp lễ hội Songkran mừng Tết cổ truyền nước này.Cảnh sát Hoàng gia Thái Lan hôm qua (13/4) cho biết, các vụ lừa đảo xảy ra trong tuần vừa qua đã gây thiệt hại gần 400 triệu Baht (khoảng 12,3 triệu USD). Lực lượng chức năng cũng kịp thời can thiệp 12 vụ việc và ngăn chặn 57 giao dịch, giúp phòng tránh thiệt hại hơn 5,1 triệu Baht (khoảng 160.000 USD), đồng thời bắt giữ 27 nghi phạm liên quan 11 vụ án.Theo cảnh sát Thái Lan, lừa đảo mua sắm trực tuyến hiện là hình thức phổ biến nhất, chiếm tới 70% tổng số vụ và tiếp tục có xu hướng gia tăng. VOV1 - Chính phủ Thái Lan đang triển khai các biện pháp khẩn cấp để đối phó với tình trạng cháy rừng và ô nhiễm bụi mịn PM2.5 ngày càng nghiêm trọng tại khu vực miền Bắc.Theo Bộ Nội vụ Thái Lan, tính đến chiều 4/4, ba tỉnh Chiang Mai, Lamphun và Phayao đã chính thức ban bố tình trạng hỗ trợ thảm họa khẩn cấp tại 17 huyện. Quyết định này cho phép các Tỉnh trưởng kích hoạt quỹ dự phòng ngân sách năm 2026 nhằm đẩy nhanh công tác cứu hỏa, hỗ trợ y tế và phục hồi địa phương.Trong khi đó, tỉnh Nan cũng ban hành lệnh khẩn cấp đóng cửa 9 khu rừng quốc gia tại các huyện Na Noi và Wiang Sa đến hết ngày 30/4. Người dân chỉ được phép vào khu vực nếu có giấy phép bằng văn bản từ lãnh đạo cộng đồng hoặc cơ quan kiểm lâm. Các hành vi vi phạm, đặc biệt đốt rừng và nương rẫy, sẽ bị xử phạt nghiêm khắc với mức án từ 1 đến 20 năm tù hoặc phạt tiền tối đa 200.000 baht (hơn 6.000 USD).Miền Bắc Thái Lan hiện đối mặt với khủng hoảng khói mù nghiêm trọng nhất trong nhiều năm, chủ yếu do đốt phụ phẩm nông nghiệp và cháy rừng. Loại hạt siêu nhỏ này có thể xâm nhập sâu vào phổi, đi vào máu, làm tăng nguy cơ bệnh tim mạch, hô hấp và ung thư.Khói bụi không chỉ khiến số ca bệnh hô hấp tăng vọt mà còn ảnh hưởng nặng nề đến ngành du lịch ngay trước kỳ lễ Songkran. Để bảo vệ người dân, chính quyền đã triển khai hàng trăm “phòng không bụi” với hệ thống lọc không khí, đặc biệt tại các cơ sở chăm sóc người cao tuổi. Tuy nhiên, các tổ chức môi trường cho rằng biện pháp hiện tại chưa đủ, đồng thời kêu gọi Chính phủ sớm thông qua Dự luật Không khí sạch vốn đang bị đình trệ. VOV1 - Sáng 31/3, Công báo Hoàng gia Thái Lan chính thức công bố danh sách thành viên Chính phủ của tân Thủ tướng Anutin Charnvirakul do Nhà Vua Thái Lan Maha Vajiralongkorn phê chuẩn. Đây là cột mốc quan trọng mở đường cho liên minh cầm quyền triển khai gói chính sách tham vọng "Thailand 10 Plus".Theo danh sách được công bố, Chính phủ mới của Thái Lan gồm 35 thành viên, thể hiện sự phân bổ quyền lực giữa đảng Tự hào Thái (Bhumjaithai) cầm quyền và các đối tác liên minh, trong đó có đảng Vì nước Thái (Pheu Thai).Đáng chú ý, ông Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn được bổ nhiệm làm Phó Thủ tướng kiêm Bộ trưởng Giao thông; ông Ekniti Nitithanprapas giữ chức Phó Thủ tướng kiêm Bộ trưởng Tài chính; trong khi ông Sihasak Phuangketkeow đảm nhiệm cương vị Phó Thủ tướng kiêm Bộ trưởng Ngoại giao. Songkran is a festival from Southeast Asia marking the new year and celebrating making a fresh start. This special program includes a program discussion hosted by Michelle Meow featuring conversations on cultural heritage, community impact, and empowerment initiatives; cultural performances, including traditional dances, live music, and storytelling sessions; a traditional water blessing ceremony; and delicious authentic Southeast Asian cuisine prepared by local chefs. About the Speakers Kesinee Angkustsiri Yip has been helping companies, organizations, and executives manage their reputations for more than two decades. An award-winning communications strategist recognized by the International Association of Business Communications, she co- founded Creative Catalyst (www.creativecatalystworks.com) to address culture and connection challenges—the things AI does not—by bringing improv into the workplace. While improv can be funny, it's not just for the theater. Improv techniques can help entrepreneurs and leaders as well as customer-facing, sales, HR, and DEI teams reduce anxiety, cultivate safe spaces, and encourage creativity. Her book, “Yes, and...” for Success: Improv Secrets to Supercharge Professional Creativity and Connection is out on Amazon and available at Bay Area bookstores. Kesinee has performed at BATS Improv and has led workshops and trainings in the United States and abroad. Kesinee is on the Board of the Asian Women's Shelter in San Francisco (www.sfaws.org) and is active with the LEAD-LISA Startup Incubator (www.gsb-lead-lisa.com). She earned a BA from Stanford University and an MBA in Marketing and Strategic Planning from Rice University. Maly Phommavong is based in Sacramento and has been in the interpreting field since 2015. In 1987, she arrived in the United States at age 13 as a child of refugees with a family of 12. She graduated with a Master's Degree in Criminology from CSU of Fresno in 2000, and worked as a deputy probation officer for Contra Costa County in 2002. She retired early from the Probation Department in 2015, and began working as a registered court interpreter for the California Judicial Court. Maly has been involved in grass-roots advocacy and volunteered in nonprofit organizations for decades. In 2015, She began her online presence through conducting live community discussions covering various issues affecting the community in the Lao language catering to non-English speaking members. Her videos have reached the Laotian audience worldwide. Kenya Prach is a survivor of the Khmer Rouge genocide who escaped to Thailand refugee camps before finding a second chance in the United States. Arriving with no knowledge of English and few opportunities, Kenya faced immense challenges, from being unable to attend high school or community college to being turned away from work. However, a kind gesture from an African American homeless man helped guide him toward education and a new life. A Cambodian-born martial artist, Kenya is known for his expertise in Kbach-Kun-Boran-Khmer (Bokator) and Muay Thai kickboxing. Despite enduring the horrors of the Khmer Rouge regime, he pursued martial arts in Thailand and later excelled in boxing in the United States. With a deep understanding of hardship and compassion, Kenya has dedicated his life to helping others, particularly in the fight against human trafficking and advocating for human rights. He believes that true wealth lies not in material possessions but in kindness, care and love. Through his work and his book Black Stone Hands, Kenya seeks to give a voice to the voiceless and inspire others to make a difference by uplifting those in need. With the big holiday nearly here, Greg and Ed reminisce about their various Songkran experiences over the years. Ed notes that last year was a breakthrough year: he actually went out and ‘threw water' for the first time in many years and had a blast. Greg points out that it's pretty common for expats to love Songkran at first, but then quickly switch to avoiding the raucous celebrations for many years. Greg has found special Songkran celebrations specifically designed to be kid-friendly, which has allowed him to keep in touch with the experience without a lot of the craziness.  Ed recounts his very first Songkran experience in Chiang Mai, a pivotal moment in his early years in Thailand as it was an amazingly good time that included three full days of brutal water wars. Ever since then he has been ‘chasing the dragon' of that first experience. Greg then uses AI to do some insightful comparisons between Songkran of 2005 and Songkran of 2025. The AI does a fairly good job of noting the transition of the holiday from being primarily local to being now well-known around the world, and one in which the prior emphasis was on traditional family ritual while today the experience is much more professionalized and commercial. Also check out the photo of a very young Greg at his first Songkran, with his friend Amanda. Oh to be young and wrinkle-free again!
