The last decade has seen a great deal of change around the interrelationship of digital and bricks and mortar across the creative industries. Disciples of each approach are plentiful but for most, it's all about the hybrid. It's about acquiring, delighting and retaining customers in both formats. It is frankly acrobatic to keep both elements flourishing. One of the tools in this hybrid toolbox is the Pop Up. And that is what we are going to be exploring in this episode with Rachel Carvell-Spedding founder of British Knitwear Brand, Navygrey.Navygrey is as classic as its namesake. Timeless. Unrippled by trends and fads. A jumper to see you through the seasons, chapters and styles of life. Whether a blustery Norfolk beach, pacing down High St Islington or by the fire in the pub, these jumpers work. Carefully designed and carefully presented with B Corp approval this is a brand growing in stature. And in amongst it all, it has been Popping Up. In great spaces and places, connecting with their audience and telling the stories that matter most to them. I am looking forward to asking about wool, about Made In Britain, about what growth looks like at this point of the business, the ever lasting power of bricks and mortar and the secrets to popping up well. Navygrey: www.navygrey.co

One of our epidode's from the very first series that is well worth a revisit is this one with Andy Ogden at English Fine Cottons. Greater Manchester was once known as cottonopolis because it was the home to the world's cotton yarn and fabric production during the industrial revolution. At the turn of the Twentieth Century, there were 9,000 people employed in the cotton industry in Ashton-under-Lyne, operating 2 million spindles. But after years of decline, the last commercial cotton spinning mill in the UK closed. Three years ago a company called Culimeta-Saveguard, who had been spinning technical fibres in Dunkenfield on the outskirts of Manchester decided to bring cotton spinning back to the UK. English Fine Cottons now supplies well-known designer brands and high street retailers with cotton yarn that is used in bedding, shirts and outerwear. I took a tour around the mill back in 2018 and chatted with Andy Ogden, General Manager of English Fine Cottons. In this interview, you'll hear all about how English Fine Cottons came about, and how they are closing one of the broken loops in the UK's fragmented textile supply chain. Recognising that the British loves their lawns with stripes created by the cylinder or reel, his company has become the largest supplier of cylinder mowers in the UK with a range that extends from largest models at use at iconic venues such as Lords Cricket Ground and World Cup stadiums to small models for use on lawns. He says that Union Jack displayed on the products is a valued indicator of Britain's reputation for fine engineering and fine turf - with stripes.

I want you to think about fashion for a moment…fashion is one of the most disposable of all the artistic endeavours…much of what’s created isn’t designed to last more than a season…once the season is over, time to toss out all the coture and buy new stuff… But there are cycles in fashion…after a certain amount of time, old styles might come back into favour again…this, in a way, makes fashion a renewable resource… Music is also like that…trends and sounds and styles come along and then disappear…but then ten, fifteen, twenty or more years later, those trends, sounds and styles are resurrected by a brand-new generation… Sometimes the kids rediscover the joys and appeal of a certain style of music independently…or maybe they got into some older records and were inspired by that…whatever the reason, anything to keep from being bored, right?... If you were around in the early-to-mid 90s, you may remember a period when every week seemed to bring along something new and cool…a new band with a new sound and a new attitude…and this stuff was coming from all directions… North America had developed a massive appetite for all things alternative, led by grunge…in fact, grunge threatened to completely swamp rock music worldwide, including the UK… But some young musicians would have none of this musical imperialism from the colonies…they decided to fight back with a real Made-In-Britain approach… The result was fantastic…and until the whole thing collapsed under its own weight of excess and overexposure and drugs, it was an excellent party…this is part 4 of our look back of the alt-rock of the 1990s…the topic?...Britpop…
