Episode 123-Nurturing Secure Attachment: Insights into Infant Development with Prof. Mark Tomlinson

Sense by Meg Faure

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 14, 2024 32:31

On this week's episode of Sense by Meg Faure, we delve into the fascinating world of infant development and nurturing secure attachment with Professor Mark Tomlinson. Professor Tomlinson is a leading researcher from Stellenbosch University with over three decades of experience. Understanding Secure Attachment Professor Tomlinson emphasizes the importance of secure attachment in an infant's early life. Professor Tomlinson highlights that attachment begins even before birth, during pregnancy, as parents start imagining and bonding with their unborn child. After birth, this attachment continues to develop through the caregiver's consistent and responsive care. Secure attachment lays the foundation for a child's emotional and social health, influencing their ability to regulate form healthy relationships. The Role of Co-Regulation and Self-Regulation A major theme discussed is the concept of co-regulation and its evolution into self-regulation. In the early months, parents play a crucial role in regulating their infant's emotions and needs. Over time, as infants grow, they gradually learn to self-soothe and manage their emotions, a process that continues well into adolescence. Professor Tomlinson highlights the importance of allowing children to experience failures and learn from them, fostering resilience and self-regulation skills. Navigating Parenting Challenges We explore the challenges parents face in deciding how much responsibility to take versus allowing their child to self-regulate. Professor Tomlinson discusses various parenting approaches, including controlled crying and attachment parenting, advising that no single method is correct. Instead, parents should trust their instincts and adapt their approach based on their child's needs and their unique relationship. Long-Term Impact of Secure Attachment Professor Tomlinson shares insights from his longitudinal research, showing the long-term benefits of secure attachment. He explains how securely attached children are better equipped to handle social interactions, manage emotions, and succeed academically. This episode is a must-listen for anyone who want to understand the crucial role of secure attachment in their child's development. Professor Tomlinson's insights offer practical advice on fostering a healthy parent-child relationship, managing the challenges of early parenting, and supporting long-term emotional well-being. Tune in to gain valuable knowledge that can help you navigate the complexities of raising a resilient and well-adjusted child.

We're back from a brief hiatus with - unbelievably - a film which actually deeply relates to testing! We're joined by Mark Tomlinson, who brings his own experiences of dealing with the National Transportation Safety Board, to discuss a film about a remarkable moment of true-life heroism, and the decisions that we make in the heat of the moment. The events of the movie give us a chance to get into in-depth discussions about the challenges of testing within regulated industries, developing risk mitigation strategies in life-critical environments, debugging/monitoring, and whether quality is a team effort. There are remarkably few distractions, although we get into some meta-discussion about whether it was correct to portray the NTSB as pantomime villains, a general critique of Clint Eastwood's agenda, a surprising number of references to metallurgy, and we give Mark an introduction to 1980s UK gameshows. One aspect that is often left out is feedback on performance metrics and behavior. In the “old days” performance feedback was given very late – either in the load testing phase at the end of the project lifecycle or even as late as when it hits production. That could be too late and it makes it hard to fix the root cause.Listen to our conversation on how to accelerate performance related feedback loops without getting overwhelmed with too much data!

Iron and manganese are the two key ingredients that enabled the mass production of steel - one of the most versatile and complex materials known to humanity. Justin Rowlatt chews on salad leaves with Andrea Sella of University College London, who explains how manganese is present in all plants and plays a key part in photosynthesis and ultimately oxygen production. He also travels to Sheffield to visit a modern steelworks - the specialist engineering steel-maker Forgemasters - where Peter Birtles and Mark Tomlinson give a taste of just how hard it is to produce unbreakable parts for nuclear power stations and oil rigs.

It's time for PerfBytes Live at the STPCON conference in Denver, Colorado! In the unseasonably warm November 2014 this is a recording of the live broadcast of the PerfBytes podcast with your abstractly random hosts Mark Tomlinson, James Pulley and guest host Howard Chorney covering the conference hot topics such as continuous continuousness, performance puzzlers, Denver police swat teams and PRONQ. Five years into its existence, TxDOT and the Central Texas Turnpike Authority are considering the SH 130 Toll Road in the Austin area to be a huge success ... except with truckers. As a result, the Texas Transportation Commission, TxDOTs governing body, voted in February to reduce the toll rate for trucks on the SH 130 and SH 45 toll roads in hopes of luring some of the trucks away from the congestion on I-35 throughout the greater Austin area. For more on this decision, I spoke with Mark Tomlinson, the Director of TxDOTs Texas Turnpike Authority.
