I attended a podcast convention earlier this year. I left some leave-behinds and business cards with the hope of landing guests spots on national podcasts. It's another way to get the word out about dating abuse and intimate partner violence. Soon after the convention, I was contacted by Mary Fernandez, the host of the "Leadership, Legacies and Legends Unleashed" podcast. She invited me to speak on her show. This is our conversation. It's quite informative overall but the parts about the warning signs of unhealthy relationships and something I call "The Template Every Abuser Follows" make this podcast episode worth your time in listening. Thank you for listening in and subscribing. Mary Fernandez, the special events and volunteer coordinator at Historic Oakland Foundation is in studio for this edition of Around Atlanta on Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio. Co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick discuss the Oakland Cemetery with Fernandez. The group touches on special events, tours, history, beauty and more at Oakland Cemetery. As the special events and volunteer coordinator, Fernandez handles two major facets of the Historic Oakland Foundation. The first area, special events, is where Fernandez helps bring visitors in to the cemetery. Helping the public get intrigued and introduced to the cemetery is a big part of coordinating special events. The Historic Oakland Foundation has five large-scale special events, including Sunday in the Park, the Run Like Hell 5K, the Capturing the Spirit of Oakland tours, Illumine and Tunes from the Tombs. In addition to other smaller events that take place over the course of the year, these five large-scale events draw in large crowds and are often sold out soon after sales open. If you are interested in any of the events or want to know how to participate, visit www.OaklandCemetery.com/events. The second part of the special events and volunteer coordinator position held by Fernandez is overseeing volunteer organizations. “None of the special events would be possible without our volunteers,” said Fernandez. “We have almost 300 active volunteers at the cemetery and they volunteer in many different capacities like leading tours and helping with special events. Truly, Oakland couldn't do what it does without its volunteers.” Historic Oakland Cemetery was founded around 1850 and rests on 48 acres of open land. It was Atlanta's first public greenspace and also a Victorian garden cemetery. Designed with the living in mind, the Victorians created a space that would allow them to visit and spend time with their deceased loved ones. Because of the initial design and intention, the Historic Oakland Cemetery has open spaces for picnics, beautiful greenery and opportunities for recreational use. “Victorians had a much more intimate relationship with death,” explained Hernandez. “Death happened in the home and deceased loved ones were normally cared for by their family members. So, that boundary between life and death was much more blurred than it is today.” Oakland Cemetery has a rich and complex history that beautifully reflects the city in which it is situated. Infused with Atlanta history and southern culture, Oakland Cemetery is not only stunning, but also historic and impactful. The next event taking place at Oakland Cemetery is on Valentines Day. Happening on February 14, 2020 from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m., Love Stories of Oakland Cemetery is a fun-filled date night in the cemetery. Complete with a tour through the gardens, tales of love stories past and complementary hot chocolate and desserts, Love Stories is a one-of-a-kind date night for the upcoming holiday. Tickets go on sale January 9, 2020 and spaces are limited. For more information on the event and ticket prices, visit the link here. In this episode, I interview Mary Fernandez to discuss what makes a brilliant content marketing strategy, and more importantly, how you actually implement the strategy. Mary is a blogger, visibility strategist, the content marketing manager of Opt-In Monster, and host of the Persuasion Nation Series Podcast. Her blogging journey began as a teacher who wrote blog posts about ballet. The idea behind these blog posts was that her ballet students could visit her blog to learn beyond the formal lessons. This beginning gradually evolved into a love for content marketing. Mary explains that guest blogging was a huge boost to her email list, and that her guest blogging efforts garnered many more subscribers over a much smaller period than before. In this episode, she talks about how she got these opportunities and how you can get more guest blogging opportunities. The most important element of a content marketing strategy is to write for the needs and wants of your audience. To fulfill this requirement of content marketing, you must do some prior research to discover what your audience wants. 70% of people who leave your site will never come back again. This is why Mary uses an Exit-Intent Pop-Up to get more subscribers. If you want a content marketing strategy that grows your audience and generates more revenue, this podcast episode is a must-listen. Would you like to become a CreativeLive instructor? Teaching on the CreativeLive stage is a huge opportunity to grow your authority and build your audience, especially if you are a creative entrepreneur or a marketing expert. In this episode, Mei Pak shares exactly how she got the opportunity to teach her own live streaming classes on CreativeLive TV. In this episode, I spoke with Mei Pak. She also runs Tiny Hands, a line of handmade, scented food jewelry, which sells in over a hundred stores across the US and has been featured on Parks and Recreation, The Chew, inTouch Magazine, Every Day with Rachael Ray, and on TV. In fact, I first met Mei several years ago when I placed a custom order for a lemon bar necklace from her! Since then, Mei became an instructor for CreativeLive, a very popular online TV show which offers live streaming workshops taught by world-class experts. I was really curious to learn how she was able to land this huge opportunity, so I sat down to talk with her, and of course I grilled her on all of the specifics. Do you need photos of yourself for your website? Smart entrepreneurs know that professional photos are a key ingredient for a persuasive personal brand. In this episode, Heidi Hapanowicz shares her process for planning a persuasive personal branding photoshoot. Heidi Hapanowicz is one of the few photographers in the world today who not only knows how to take beautiful photos and professional headshots, but she is also well versed in personal branding. Photography for personal brands is a very new discipline, but it is growing very quickly as more and more entrepreneurs are discovering the power of having photos of yourself on your website. What’s so fascinating to me is how much easier it is to sell your products and services when you put photos of yourself on your site. In fact, it’s probably the simplest thing that you can do to be more memorable, more likable and more persuasive. However, it’s not always easy to put yourself out there like that, and unless you really know what you are doing it can be very difficult to get your photos to look the way you want and to give off the vibe and emotions that you want your brand to convey. So, I asked Heidi to give us some tips, and by the end of this episode you’ll be equipped with the knowledge and the resources that you need to really shine in your photoshoot. Want to grow your authority, and get paid to do it? Getting published on The Huffington Post is a huge deal for an entrepreneur, even without getting paid. But in my latest podcast, Candis Hidalgo shares her “secret sauce” that actually gets you paid for every article you write. Oh yeah, and when you get your HuffPo blogger account, you can finally put that coveted “As Featured In” logo up on your website. Candis is a stay-at-home blogging wife and mother of 4 adorable kids. She loves to give strategic blogging advise to other busy mamas by sharing what’s working for her on her blog, SmartMomBlogger.com. Candis believes in making the most of your “blogging time” by focusing on productive and profitable tasks so that you can have the freedom to work from home without stressing about money, and I think that’s something that all of Persuasion Nation can relate to, even the guys. So in this episode, I asked Candis why entrepreneurs should get published on the Huffington Post, and how to go about it the right way. She also shares how she turned her first HuffPo article into a money-making machine. That’s right: even though Huffington Post writers do not get paid, Candis used her article to drive traffic into a targeted sales funnel so she not only got huge exposure and credibility, which is priceless, but she also made money in the process. Want to meet, or even become friends with, a huge influencer? How about the President of the United States? Now, Michael has spent the past 4 years interviewing globally successful, young high achievers (including one who is now in the running to become the youngest woman ever elected into the U.S. Congress!) and he has learned a lot about what it takes to become successful at any age. In fact, he says that success = people, so I asked him what that means and how to do it in this episode. Plus, she shares her lead magnet promotion strategy, including how to get started with driving traffic on Pinterest. A lead magnet is a term that internet marketers use to describe a freebie that you use to ethically bribe people to subscribe to your email list. After interviewing a large number of successful online entrepreneurs, I can tell you that the #1 reason that they are all successful is because they have built an email list, and a lead magnet is the most effective way to do that. I asked Suzi about her most popular lead magnet to date, which got her 600 subscribers in just 3 weeks. She explains exactly how she created it, and also how she promoted it. Interview with Dr. Mary Fernandez, president of MentorNet, a division of Great Minds in STEM, on how mentoring can bridge the "opportunity gap" among low-income minorities and women pursuing the American Dream.
This week, my guest, Mary Fernandez, is joining me to talk about MentorNet, an organization dedicated to advancing women and underrepresented minorities in STEM fields. Mentoring helps women in remain in STEM careers and also be successful. Part of the challenge is gender, but another is race and culture and Mary will talk about her own story of how mentoring helped her overcome her challenges as a Latina woman in STEM and how MentorNet now is helping students of diverse backgrounds succeed.Mary Fernandez was named CEO of MentorNet in 2013 and since that time has renewed the organization’s commitment to its core values. Drawing upon the past decade’s revolutionary changes in social communication and significant advances in mentoring social science, Fernandez and her team have completely re-envisioned MentorNet’s program and platform and advocate for scaling their initiatives significantly, as they are convinced that their new methodology will help all STEM students.A leader and active volunteer, Fernandez earned a PhD in Computer Science from Princeton University and is the author of more than 50 scholarly publications. She holds five patents and has mentored more than 20 STEM protégés. In 2012 Fernandez was recognized by AT&T as a ‘Champion of Diversity,’ a distinction awarded annually to only five of AT&T’s more than 300,000 employees, and in 2011 she received HENAAC’s ‘Outstanding Technical Achievement-Industry’ award.
