Wallace, PhDPoet Laureate Emeritus of Jersey CityCo-hostKim Correro,Rutgers Master Gardener and Director of State ProgramsSpecial ContributorDr. Randi EckelEntomologist and Vice President of Membership NPSNJDo you have a question about native plants for Randi?Email: TheWildStory@npsnj.orgThe WildStory presents a special episode this month in celebration of Black History. We have three amazing guests, who share the stories of Black Americans who wrote poetry, created gardens, advanced the field of horticulture, and inspired others—and who are each doing important work themselves today. An unexpected throughline in these conversations is the influence of W.E.B. DuBois, the Black leader, visionary and author of the 1903 book The Souls of Black Folk, which inspired generations of Black Americans toward self-realization and liberty through education, the arts and culture, and more.  The first guest is Shaun Spencer-Hester (0:04:43), granddaughter of the poet, gardener, and community leader Anne Spencer. Anne Spencer's home and garden in Lynchburg, Virginia was a gathering place for Black intellectuals of the Harlem Renaissance, offering a garden refuge and retreat at a time when many Black Americans had migrated north to urban centers for new opportunities. Shaun shares family stories about her grandmother's life, garden, and poetry, and brings us inside theAnne Spencer House and Garden Museum, where she is the Executive Director and Curator. In lieu of our usual Ask Randi segment, this month, Kim and Ann take the mic and dive into the exciting opportunities on the horizon for NPSNJ members (0:41:10)! Mark your calendars for the highly anticipatedSpring Annual Meeting and Conference on March 1st, where we're proud to welcome the esteemed keynote speaker Doug Tallamy. NPSNJ is rolling outsix brand new classes that explore a range of captivating topics, and is thrilled to introduce a Spanish language version of the helpful brochure, "Going Native: A Guide to Landscaping with Native Plants in Northern New Jersey.” Don't miss these incredible chances to elevate your knowledge and skills!  In the second interview, Jerri Mitchell-Lee of Newark, NJ speaks with us about her remarkable great-aunt,Effie Lee Newsome (0:50:33) a prominent figure of the Harlem Renaissance. Newsome was the editor of the children's column "Little Page" in W.E.B. Du Bois's influential publication, The Crisis, where she showcased several of her own children's poems. An avid lover of the outdoors, Effie Lee Newsome possessed an extraordinary talent for connecting people—especially children—with the wonders of nature. Whether she was marveling at a spider, a goldfinch, a snowflake, or a violet, she made the natural world come alive. In 1940, she published Gladiola Garden: Poems of Outdoors and Indoors, which was reprinted in 2020, making her work accessible to a brand new audience. In the final segment, horticulturalistAbra Lee (1:10:01) tells us about her highly anticipated book, Conquer The Soil: Black America and the Untold Stories of Our Country's Gardeners, Farmers, and Growers (Timber Press, 2026). This remarkable work is set to inspire readers and shed light on the profound history and culture of Black growers across our nation. Abra serves as the Director of Horticulture at the historicOakland Cemetery in Atlanta, GA. During our conversation, we delve into Abra's impressive career path and explore the influential figures in her life, particularly her parents, who encouraged her curiosity and ambition.Thank you for joining us on The WildStory. Some of these cemeteries, however, boast more ghost stories than others.YOUTUBE CHAPTERS & TIME STAMPS…00:00:00.000 = Title Story Preview and Show Open00:05:01.866 = CBS Radio Mystery Theater, “The Old Ones Are Hard To Kill” (January 06, 1974)00:52:06.611 = Weird Darkness, “Resurrection Mary – Chicago's Most Famous Ghost”01:00:37.213 = I Love a Mystery, “Case of the Roxy Mob” (January 18, 1939)01:16:08.685 = Weird Darkness, “Bachelor's Grove Cemetery”01:22:35.237 = The Shadow, “The Three Ghosts” (October 31, 1937)01:54:46.740 = Weird Darkness, “The Black Angel of Oakland Cemetery”01:59:38.249 = Weird Darkness, “Hellmouth of Stull Cemetery”02:05:21.623 = Weird Darkness, “Moving Coffins of the Chase Family”02:11:40.802 = Sherlock Holmes, “The Empty House” (October 05, 1932)02:27:34.745 = Weird Darkness, “Most Haunted Graveyards Ever, Part 1”02:41:05.866 = Sleep No More, “Conquerors Isle” (November 21, 1956)03:10:54.364 = Weird Darkness, “Most Haunted Graveyards Ever, Part 2”03:31:19.125 = Sounds of Darkness, “The Neiman Principle” (July 14, 1967)03:58:08.682 = Show CloseSOURCES AND REFERENCES FROM THE EPISODE…“Resurrection Mary – Chicago's Most Famous Ghost” by Elisabeth Tilstra: http://bit.ly/31DKcr4“Black Angel of Oakland Cemetery” by Orrin Grey: http://bit.ly/2OTIPTo“Moving Coffins of the Chase Family” by Elisabeth Tilstra: http://bit.ly/2yVrHlv“Hellmouth of Stull Cemetery” posted at The Line Up: http://bit.ly/2yT1dBc“Colonial Park Cemetery” by Orrin Grey: http://bit.ly/31yX4yw“Bachelor's Grove” by Orrin Grey: http://bit.ly/2Z0yhG2“The Dead of Hart Island” by Steven Casale: http://bit.ly/2H77spp“The Mausoleum of Mary Reed” by Jessica Ferri: http://bit.ly/302mrby“The Grave of the Female Stranger” by Orrin Grey: http://bit.ly/2OViAfA“Forgotten Graveyards” by Deanna Janes: http://bit.ly/300Duej“The Most Haunted Graveyards Ever” sources: Occult Museum: http://bit.ly/304kX0A, Kimberly Powell: http://bit.ly/2Z0gkmN, Stacy Conradt: http://bit.ly/2YKCIpe, David Ian McKendry: http://bit.ly/2KvMz9nWeird Darkness theme by Alibi Music Library= = = = =(Over time links seen above may become invalid, disappear, or have different content. IN THIS EPISODE: In the Oakland Cemetery, a bronze monument to tragedy is said to bring death to anyone who touches it. (Black Angel of Death) *** While camping, a man has dreams of a dark-haired woman several nights in a row. Normally it wouldn't be anything to be all that concerned about, but it's something to fear if you are near the French Broad river. (Siren of the French Broad) *** Alien visitors, beings from a different dimension, our planet even had tree monsters and sentient pyramids showing up – and all in the year 1965. (The Inter-Dimensional Interlopers of 1965) *** A retired naval officer reports rocks falling through his home's roof – dozens in a single day – with no explanation of where they came from. (Cappy Ricks and the Stones) *** In 1994 a man has a paranormal experience with a popular song recorded two decades earlier. (The Joker) *** Is there a clandestine space program designed to save the elite from a global catastrophe? (Alternative 3) *** On this date, October 24, 1953, Evelyn Hartley, a 15-year-old sophomore from La Crosse, Wisconsin, vanished without a trace while on her way to a babysitting job. It was like something out of a Halloween urban legend but in this case, the horror was real. (The Babysitter Who Vanished) *** The odd happening that takes place here and there in a house more than likely can be explained in some rational way. Even quite a few strange occurrences could probably be explained by science. But when the events seem to never stop, perhaps it's time to think something else is going on. (An Assortment of Experiences) *** Legend tells a centuries-old curse was placed upon Dudleytown in Connecticut. The town turned into a horrible place where people committed suicide or went insane. (Cursed Dudleytown) *** Exactly 92 years ago today – October 24, 1926 - something went wrong during a performance by Harry Houdini. A week later, he would be dead. (Houdini's Final Performance) *** The Hamilton-Byrne family was anything but typical, rather it was a doomsday cult with a leader who believed herself to be the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. (Inside the Family Cult) *** AND MUCH MORE!SOURCES AND REFERENCES FROM THE EPISODE…“The History and Hauntings Of The Hindenburg Disaster” (from the book “And Hell Followed With It” by Troy Taylor: http://amzn.to/2zrimTY“Old Man of the Cave”: https://tinyurl.com/taa9h3w“Evil Spirits And Demons Of Marshes And Swamps In Slavic Folklore”: https://tinyurl.com/t79ccnz“Bumps in the Night”: https://tinyurl.com/uz5m7m6“Black Eyed People, Why Are They So Different From The Rest of Us”: https://tinyurl.com/y8mjmhu9“The Seer Of Possibilities” (Creepypasta): https://tinyurl.com/ycz95rnp“Alternative 3”: https://tinyurl.com/w4f5edr“Black Angel of Death” by Orrin Grey: http://ow.ly/v2m430mkGWs“The Inter-Dimensional Interlopers of 1965” by Brent Swancer: https://tinyurl.com/rwy5jdd“Siren of the French Broad”: https://tinyurl.com/sa2ewrt“The Joker” by Rory Kavenagh – submitted directly to WeirdDarkness.com“Cappy Ricks and the Stones”: https://tinyurl.com/ybc3o3rb“The Babysitter Who Vanished” by Troy Taylor: https://tinyurl.com/w9ohx8k“An Assortment of Experiences”: https://tinyurl.com/quqbbmg“Inside the Family Cult” by Joel Stice: https://tinyurl.com/tobap65“Cursed Dudleytown”: https://tinyurl.com/s3sg49m“Houdini's Final Performance” by Troy Taylor: https://tinyurl.com/sj5bsjwWeird Darkness theme by Alibi Music Library. = = = = =(Over time links seen above may become invalid, disappear, or have different content. SCARED TO DEATH IS EXPLICIT IN EVERY WAY. PLEASE TAKE CARE WHILE LISTENING.Dan has a mysterious disappearance and an urban legend that some think is a lot more than just a legend. His first tale focuses on the strange circumstances surrounding the disappearance of a young man in Colorado back in 2008. The second story will bring us to a cemetery in Iowa where an angelic statue has gained a reputation for not being very…. angelic. Is the Black Angel of Iowa City, Iowa's Oakland Cemetery cursed? Lynze has two great stories this week as well! She will kick it off with a bizarre and hard-to-explain story about a hot tub and a cell phone- we will leave it at that. And her second story is a banger with haunted house vibes, doppelgangers, and a jinn!  Patreon Monthly Donation: In November, we always choose a Veteran/Military non-profit in honor of Veteran's Day. This year, we have decided to donate to The Blue Skies Foundation. The Brotallion Blue Skies Foundation is a veteran-founded non-profit dedicated to providing post-mishap support for the Army Aviation community and their families. They consider themselves fortunate to be part of a close-knit community and thus see their responsibility to give back and support the families of those who have lost loved ones. They hope to honor the legacies of those who have fallen and support their families through the work of the Brotallion Blue Skies Foundation. We will send them $12,884 this month and add $1430 to the scholarship fund for distribution next year. If you'd like to learn more or support the Blue Skies Foundation, please visit thebrotallionblueskiesfoundation.org. Standup: If you want to see a very different side of Dan than you see here and possibly see Lynze in the crowd (she is always happy to say HI!), get on over to dancummins.tv for ticket links to shows. You can find Dan in Lexington and Virginia Beach! A reminder that Dan is not touring in 2024, so this is your last chance to see him! Thank you for continuing to send in your stories, Creeps and Peepers!**Please keep doing so. Please keep doing so. Love is already a theme in the work of Cultivating Place, to be sure, but with last week's loving work around the restoration of historic apple orchards in southwestern Colorado, and this week's episode, which I think of as the Love Letters of Abra Lee, love letters, love stories, and loving gardeners is an explicit theme here this month!  In celebration of Black History Month in progress and Valentine's Day coming up – this week we're rejoined in conversation by Abra Lee, gardener, garden scholar under the name of Conquer the Soil, horticulturist, and graduate of the Longwood Gardens Fellows program, a 13-month leadership in public horticulture fellowship. In addition to co-creating a public garden exhibition called Music x Flowers, Abra has recently accepted a position as Director of Horticulture at the Oakland Cemetery, a historic Victorian garden cemetery in downtown Atlanta. This week's conversation is a valentine to gardeners and garden lovers everywhere. Enjoy! Cultivating Place now has a donate button! We thank you so much for listening over the years and we hope you'll support Cultivating Place. We can't thank you enough for making it possible for this young program to grow even more of these types of conversations. Director of Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Debbie Frank with Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) joins the Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio podcast to chat about new projects and developments, the transit company's biggest challenges and more. Responsible for TOD planning and implementation around stations, Frank assists in the development of mixed-use communities for MARTA users. During Frank's six-and-a-half years with the organization, MARTA has experienced an economic impact of nearly $1 billion in new real estate at or near one-third of the 38 stations in its network. A considerable aid to the transit system's efforts, Frank's resume highlights include 25 years of planning, development, real estate and redevelopment initiative experience for non-profits, for-profits and quasi-governmental agencies in Alabama, Tennessee, Ohio and now Georgia.  Before working with MARTA, Frank was a managing partner for Urban Blueprint, a real estate development and planning consulting firm based in Nashville, Tennessee. Her previous experience also includes serving as the executive director of the North Nashville Community Development Corporation, an affiliate organization of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce.  Frank said, “We pride ourselves on being an option for folks. The convenience of MARTA is definitely one that more people should experience.” MARTA is the ninth largest transit system in the United States, servicing the city of Atlanta and Fulton, DeKalb and Clayton counties. The organization has 38 rail stations, 570 buses and 338 rail cars, with upcoming plans for new rail cars in the works. A truly accessible way of travel through the metro area, the MARTA network also features a mobility service with 211 vehicles set aside to support the program.  Frank said, “Prior to the pandemic, we had a daily ridership of about 450,000 people and annually that amounted to about 7.9 million riders…We saw a decrease…but we are pleased to say we are seeing an uptick in our ridership.” The MARTA ridership has also increased with the current rise in gas prices. The team at MARTA was fortunate enough to host the grand opening of the King Memorial TOD, a mixed-use development boasting 11,000 square feet of retail and office space and apartments adjacent to Oakland Cemetery and the King Memorial Station. The apartment sector of the project, Marchon, features 305 apartments available for rent, 32% categorized as affordable housing. Creating jobs and income for the surrounding neighborhood, Frank shared that the King Memorial TOD was a $63 million investment for the community. The developer worked closely with InvestAtlanta to ensure the creation of affordable housing units. Frank said, “We try to create as many opportunities [as possible] to work closely with our local jurisdiction where the opportunity presents itself. It did here at King Memorial.” Tune in to the full interview above to learn more about MARTA or visit www.ItsMARTA.com.  Never miss an episode of Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio! Historic Oakland Foundation Safeguards Atlanta History

Senior Director of Capital Projects Neale Nickels with the Historic Oakland Foundation joins the Atlanta Real Estate Radio podcast to share the rich past and preservation of Oakland Cemetery. Nickels joins host Carol Morgan on the Around Atlanta segment and discusses upcoming events and ways to support the iconic Atlanta landmark. Not native to Georgia, working for the Historic Oakland Foundation allowed Nickels and his family to connect with the rich history and the city of Atlanta in a unique way. Oakland Cemetery was founded by the city of Atlanta in 1850, back before the capital was the great urban center we know today. A small but growing community, Atlanta was in need of a municipal cemetery. As the cemetery developed, there was a shift in thinking regarding cemeteries internationally, transitioning from considering graveyards to cemeteries which translates to a final resting place for family and loved ones. Since 1976, the foundation's mission has been to preserve, restore, enhance and share Oakland Cemetery and its gifts with the surrounding community.  “The idea of a celebration of life really came to be in that time. That's really kind of what we have carried through here in the 21st century and what the Historic Oakland Foundation strives to do,” Nickels said. “To celebrate the lives of those Atlantans who are buried here and to tell their stories.” The foundation's first brick-and-mortar fundraiser, The Living History Capital Campaign has a lofty goal of $12 million and to date has raised a little over $10.3 million! In the last 10 years, the Historic Oakland Foundation has been making great strides to increase the restoration and preservation of the grounds to meet the needs of growing visitation. The campaign's goal is to triple the investment for the cemetery and foundation. Nickels said, “This campaign is designed to catapult us into that next level, and it will include some very significant projects…It's really aimed at building on the good work we've done and preparing us to better serve the families involved at Oakland [and] the people who come to visit.” With the funds raised from the Living History Capital Campaign, the Historic Oakland Foundation has plans to open a visitors center outside of the cemetery gates. Due to increased programming and guests, the foundation has outgrown the space and is in need of an upgrade. The visitors center will move from its current location of 50 years, a gothic bell tower constructed in 1899. The new 10,000 square-foot visitors center will house the gift shop as well as act as a first stop for guests in terms of organization, directions and more. There will also be a spacious, flexible community space available for rent with a great view of the cemetery below that is perfect for visiting K through 12 and college groups. In this episode of Armchair Historians, Anne Marie talks to Kevin Kuharic about his recently published book, A Clutter of Patchwork Squares: A Chronicle of Atlanta's Oakland Cemetery. For those of you who have been following us from the beginning, you may remember that my first episode was a three-part series in which Mr. Kuharic shared the history of famous hotelier and French chef of the Rockies, Louis Dupuy.A Clutter of Patchwork Squares, which is rising quickly up the Amazon chart for 20th Century American History, is a groundbreaking historical account and reference. Kuharic has literally spent years researching and writing about one of the most popular and largest cemeteries in Atlanta Georgia, we are talking footnotes and everything. Mr. Kuharic serves as executive director of Hotel de Paris Museum, a Site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and member of Great American Treasures. He has appeared in documentaries, on public television series, and contributed to the books James Novelli: A Forgotten Sculptor, Building Metropolitan Atlanta: Past, Present & Future, Urban Green: Innovative Parks for Resurgent Cities, Atlanta's Oakland Cemetery: An Illustrated History and Guide, and Cultural Heritage Tourism: Five Steps for Success and Sustainability.  His historic preservation work at Oakland cemetery spanned three decades and was recognized by four mayors of the City of Atlanta.A Clutter of Patchwork Squares: Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/Atlantamunicipalcemeteryhistory On Amazon: https://amzn.to/3osCSwr Hotel de Paris Museum: https://hoteldeparismuseum.org Oakland Cemetery: https://oaklandcemetery.com Support Armchair Historians:Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/armchairhistoriansKo-fi: https://ko-fi.com/belgiumrabbitproductionsSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/armchairhistorians)

Since the advent of civilization we’ve gathered our dead and placed them in burial plots together. And it’s no surprise that people talk of the spirits that linger, not far from the final resting place of their bodies, perhaps clinging to life or serving as a grim omen for what’s to come when we all meet our end. Some of these cemeteries, however, boast more ghost stories than others.TRANSCRIPT FOR THIS EPISODE…Find a full or partial transcript at the bottom of this blog post: https://weirddarkness.com/archives/7358 LINKS, EPISODES, AND PAGES MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE…Become a Patron: https://WeirdDarkness.com/WEIRDOWeird Darkness store: https://WeirdDarkness.com/STORESocial media, Email and Contact Info: https://WeirdDarkness.com/CONTACTThe Church of the Undead: http://TheChurchOfTheUndead.comSTORY AND MUSIC CREDITS/SOURCES…(Over time links can and may become invalid, disappear, or have different content.)“Resurrection Mary – Chicago’s Most Famous Ghost” by Elisabeth Tilstra: http://bit.ly/31DKcr4 “Black Angel of Oakland Cemetery” by Orrin Grey: http://bit.ly/2OTIPTo “Moving Coffins of the Chase Family” by Elisabeth Tilstra: http://bit.ly/2yVrHlv “Hellmouth of Stull Cemetery” posted at The Line Up: http://bit.ly/2yT1dBc “Colonial Park Cemetery” by Orrin Grey: http://bit.ly/31yX4yw “Bachelor’s Grove” by Orrin Grey: http://bit.ly/2Z0yhG2 “The Dead of Hart Island” by Steven Casale: http://bit.ly/2H77spp “The Mausoleum of Mary Reed” by Jessica Ferri: http://bit.ly/302mrby “The Grave of the Female Stranger” by Orrin Grey: http://bit.ly/2OViAfA “Forgotten Graveyards” by Deanna Janes: http://bit.ly/300Duej “The Most Haunted Graveyards Ever” sources: Occult Museum: http://bit.ly/304kX0A, Kimberly Powell: http://bit.ly/2Z0gkmN, Stacy Conradt: http://bit.ly/2YKCIpe, David Ian McKendry: http://bit.ly/2KvMz9n Weird Darkness theme by Alibi Music Library. Mary Fernandez, the special events and volunteer coordinator at Historic Oakland Foundation is in studio for this edition of Around Atlanta on Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio. Co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick discuss the Oakland Cemetery with Fernandez. The group touches on special events, tours, history, beauty and more at Oakland Cemetery. As the special events and volunteer coordinator, Fernandez handles two major facets of the Historic Oakland Foundation. The first area, special events, is where Fernandez helps bring visitors in to the cemetery. Helping the public get intrigued and introduced to the cemetery is a big part of coordinating special events. The Historic Oakland Foundation has five large-scale special events, including Sunday in the Park, the Run Like Hell 5K, the Capturing the Spirit of Oakland tours, Illumine and Tunes from the Tombs. In addition to other smaller events that take place over the course of the year, these five large-scale events draw in large crowds and are often sold out soon after sales open. If you are interested in any of the events or want to know how to participate, visit www.OaklandCemetery.com/events. The second part of the special events and volunteer coordinator position held by Fernandez is overseeing volunteer organizations. “None of the special events would be possible without our volunteers,” said Fernandez. “We have almost 300 active volunteers at the cemetery and they volunteer in many different capacities like leading tours and helping with special events. Truly, Oakland couldn't do what it does without its volunteers.” Historic Oakland Cemetery was founded around 1850 and rests on 48 acres of open land. It was Atlanta's first public greenspace and also a Victorian garden cemetery. Designed with the living in mind, the Victorians created a space that would allow them to visit and spend time with their deceased loved ones. Because of the initial design and intention, the Historic Oakland Cemetery has open spaces for picnics, beautiful greenery and opportunities for recreational use. “Victorians had a much more intimate relationship with death,” explained Hernandez. “Death happened in the home and deceased loved ones were normally cared for by their family members. So, that boundary between life and death was much more blurred than it is today.” Oakland Cemetery has a rich and complex history that beautifully reflects the city in which it is situated. Infused with Atlanta history and southern culture, Oakland Cemetery is not only stunning, but also historic and impactful. The next event taking place at Oakland Cemetery is on Valentines Day. Happening on February 14, 2020 from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m., Love Stories of Oakland Cemetery is a fun-filled date night in the cemetery. Complete with a tour through the gardens, tales of love stories past and complementary hot chocolate and desserts, Love Stories is a one-of-a-kind date night for the upcoming holiday. Tickets go on sale January 9, 2020 and spaces are limited. For more information on the event and ticket prices, visit the link here. At first glance, you might be tempted to think of Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City as nothing more than your average suburban graveyard, but don’t be fooled. Tucked away inside its iron gates sits the Black Angel statue, a winged figure so menacing that anyone who dares to touch it is said to fall victim to one hell of a curse. The curse is one that has scared late-night thrill-seekers for decades, and while it might seem fitting to affix such a legend to a statue so eerie, the Dark Angel of Iowa City was once a beautiful monument to one woman’s sorrow. Typically on Sidewalk Radio we choose dynamic topics that are in a state of flux. The BeltLine, The Clermont Hotel, The Art Show, as recent examples. So, it might seem odd that January's show highlights a place that normally we might think about as anything but in transition, a cemetery. But, it’s not just any cemetery. Historic Oakland Cemetery is the oldest landmark in continuous use in Atlanta history. And, as you will hear, Oakland is anything but dead. It is very much alive and growing. Guests on this episode are George Hart, former board chair for the Historic Oakland Foundation, Douglas C. Allen, the Sr. Associate Dean of Architecture at Georgia Tech and a master landscape architect, D.L. Henderson, a Dr. of Humanities and researcher of Atlanta's African-American History and Cooper Sanchez, an artist and landscape designer.
