MOVIE DISCUSSION: Liz & A Movie: Instagram / YouTube / LetterboxdLiz from Liz & A Movie (and Court from The B-Movie Critics Podcast!) join Melvin to discuss one of his old-school favorites: Donnie Darko! They get into the drama, the angst, and everything in between! Topics:Melvin asks Liz & Court a few questions about their movie tastes, as well as learns about their reticence for "super boys". Donnie Darko produces a lot of deep feelings, even if a lot of the film is hard to understand.Melvin's rewatch was surreal, and he shares why he thinks it impacted him so much.Donnie Darko plays with a mix of genres, tones, and characters, and this narrative fragmentation builds a picture of Donnie's confused world.Contrasting the loneliness of Donnie and the loneliness of Cherita. The passage of time, time travel, and change are all ideas at play within Donnie Darko.A lot of Donnie Darko starts to explore dynamics of predestination.Melvin recalls the explanation for the movie Richard Kelly provided with regards to all of the weird, paranormal, timey-wimey stuff that happens in the film... and it's as bonkers as you think it is (and also not that important!).Recommendations:Late Night with the Devil (2023) (Movie)Dark (2017) (Series)Twisters (2024) (Movie)Chronicle (2012) (Movie)MAILBAG: Send questions with your first name and we'll answer them in future episodes! Hello everybody, first of all, I want to apologise for getting Ms' Chen's name wrong just so many times I love her so much and this is simply not the way to show that love. I also want to apologise for making a tiny paper octopus during this because you can hear the rustling however, as is understandable, I have to make this octopus it's incredible. It's like red and its leg stick up and it's really cute anyway getting slightly ahead of myself here. This episode is on Donnie Darko which is absolutely my favourite film ever I have watched it around 6 or 7 times in the past week and it never gets bad. Go watch it! if you haven't watched it this episode will still be absolutely fine to listen to because nothing I say even comes close to what happens in that film. I have many more things to say about it so I am trying to condense things into smaller more specific episodes? and what is this but exactly that? apart from perhaps a disaster.  The playlist for the film is as follows (i usually take three from the film and three I think fit the vibe): The killing moon - Echo and the Bunnymen (nice reference to frank right there) Head over heels - Tears for Fears Mad world - Gary Jules (choosing this version because I'm sorry Tears for Fears but it IS better)  Caterpillar -  The Cure  Gigantic - The Pixies  Tugboat - Galaxie 500  As always this is the link to the Black Lives Matter doc and i strongly encourage you to read through it and sign any petitions that you can and then share. https://blacklivesmatter.carrd.co/.  Next week I will talk about the Cornetto trilogy maybe? but I am afraid that whatever I will say will not give it the same justice that hundreds of other film analysers have. I also have an absolutely terrible track record with sticking to my word so if you do actually end up hearing about Hot Fuzz or The World's End or the other one count yourself lucky that I'm actually going through with something! Also, who knows, maybe one day I will actually talk about captain fantastic, even if that day may be far away. Lord knows I've done enough notes on it.

August 3, 1980. AuSable Township, Michigan. 20-year old Cherita Thomas borrows her friend's car in order to pick up her daughter from a babysitter, but the vehicle breaks down before she arrives. Witnesses see Cherita climbing into a blue pick-up truck driven by a white male, but she is never heard from again. Jimmie Allen Nelson, the babysitter's brother-in-law, is suspected of harming Cherita in a racially motivated hate crime, and even though Cherita's body is not found, Nelson is charged and convicted of her murder three decades later. However, Nelson's conviction is overturned when newly discovered evidence surfaces which reportedly implicates another suspect, so the murder charge against him is dismissed in 2014. This week we chat with Dr. Cherita Weatherspoon. She is an Individual & Organizational Success Strategist and a thought leader on the topics of purpose and leadership. She is a four-time author, self-publisher, editor and contributing writer for Women of More Magazine. Through her Powerhouse Coaching brand, Cherita’s mission is to engage, to elevate and to empower women. She engages with her clients and audience through shared experiences, humor, and sometimes tears, in print, on video, in person and virtually -challenging them to move, to act, and to overcome on their way to becoming. Her desire is to elevate their way of thinking, to think about possibilities rather than probabilities; what can be rather than what has been; and who they can become rather than the identity they feel they’ve lost. And, ultimately, she wants to empower women with practical strategies, a plan of action, accountability and support to accomplish their goals and live the life they desire…without guilt. Cherita has worked with numerous organizations, including faith-based, education, non-profit, and for-profit organizations as a speaker, consultant, leader, and educator.
