Interview by Kris PetersSydney metal outfit Harroway have been crushing skulls since 2019 withtheir aggressive brand of metal, highlighting real life problems and issues. As such their passion has always been evident be it on stage orrecording, with their debut 2023 EP, I Don't Want To Be Here Anymore resonating on a global scale that led to a sold-out headlining tour that took the band across Australia before deservedly securing them supports for international acts such as We Came as Romans (USA), Invent Animate (USA), and Crossfaith (JAP).The band have been absent from the air waves since last April's song Heresy but have returned with a vengeance on the back of their new single Narsociety. While still maintaining the fabric of their metal DNA, Narsociety also sees Harroway exploring more melodic elements entwined with clean vocals that have not previously been a major component of their music.An amalgamation of the words Narcissist and Society, Narsociety paints an honestly bleak portrait of the modern reliance and dependence on social media and the darkness that easily consumes it. It is a brutally honest portrayal of what is becoming an increasingly dangerous subject, delivered with the raw hostility that has become Harroway's trademark.HEAVY spoke with guitarist Anthony earlier this week to see how the response has been."It's been a bit of a different sound for us with having the new singer come in with a little bit of a higher register," he offered. "It's a little bit more melodic for us as well, but so far it's been really good. We've got some really good feedback from fans, friends, and family, and it seems to be going off at the shows too. People are really enjoying Chris's voice."The Chris who Anthony is referring to is new clean vocalist Chris 'CJ' Webb. Having that lighter shade to the band's generally more aggressive music could be considered a brave move by the band, but Anthony insists it is something that has been added for the betterment of Harroway's music."It's definitely something we've wanted to introduce into our sound, both live and in the studio, before," he shared. "But it's been something we've struggled with to really execute on because, you know, Matt (Banks, vocalist) is excellent at what he does. He has an excellent vocal range and also his extreme vocals. As a guitarist and backup screamer, I can really appreciate the talent he has, but he really looked within himself and knew we needed somebody to bring us into that higher register."In the full interview, Anthony discussed Narsociety in greater detail from both a musical and lyrical perspective. He ran us through the underlying themes and messages of the song and how it is a reflection on today's society and behaviour.We discussed the captivating and cinematic music video that goes with it, the recent tour with Make Them Suffer and Justice For The Damned, playing Narsociety live for the first few times and how it was received and spoke about a couple of shows on the horizon. During this episode I had the pleasure of chatting with Matt Banks. Matt is Massage Therapist and coach practicing in Halifax, Nov Scotia in Canada. Matt is a long time friend and colleague. Released April 10th, ‘Heresy' is the new single from Sydney metalcore quartet Harroway. The track takes a deep dive into the mind of vocalist Matt Banks. It sees Harroway explore a desire to escape from emotional pain and suffering. Banks pleads for relief, projecting undertones of existential questioning and a longing for peace or oblivion. Pulling from his experience living with Hemochromatosis, a disorder where the body creates excessive amounts of iron and becomes toxic, the single comes with a swirling sense of self resignation as Banks grapples with existential crisis, mental anguish, and the search for a meaning. The scathing single is produced, mixed and mastered by Mark Williamson at Keywork Audio (Inertia, Closure, Revoid) with a chaotic and claustrophobic music video produced and directed by Lexi Markovic. Harroway offer vulnerable truths through their music and seek to connect with their audiences in a live capacity. The band have been on a national tour supporting metalcore legends Sienna Skies and No Home throughout April and May. Beginning their journey in 2019, Harroway have jumped from strength to strength since their inception. That EP solidified the band's growing reputation and led to a sold-out run of EP launch shows, but instead of resting on their early laurels, Harroway have elected to come out all guns blazing with the first single release since that cycle, a demonically ferocious number called Heresy.The track is a spitting, snarling descent into chaos, seemingly leaving behind the more universal appeal of their previous songs with a step to the dark side that could potentially open Harroway up to … well, just about anything.HEAVY sat down with vocalist Matt Banks to find out more, starting with how fans have reacted to the new single."It's been great," he smiled. "Weirdly now that it's a month or so out we are really starting to see the traction from Spotify numbers. Our monthlies are back up to like over 20,000 monthly listeners now. I think it's like the total of all platforms, which is sick because it started a bit slow. I was a little nervous and thought maybe people didn't like it. Sydney metalcore outfit Harroway have released the final song from their upcoming mixtape Bloom In A Dark Room which will be out on March 1.“Final Letter” is a brutal song, especially when you stop to take in its subject matter, with vocalist Matt Banks stopping by to talk to HEAVY ahead of the release to discuss the song and more."We went heavy,” he said when asked about the musical direction of ‘Final Letter’. “We just wanted to go as heavy as possible. We started with the intro and because of the dark chords that the boys were using we just knew that it needed to be a fuck off heavy song (laughs). The moment I heard the first intro into the verse and that first riff I knew I had a lot of shit to let out so it was great."“Final Letter” tells a dark and harrowing tale of suicide and depression told through Banks’ eyes and is a confronting and brutally honest song that is only strengthened when you realize the gravity of its lyrics.“It's basically about my battle with depression and suicide as well as my tendency to isolate myself and really just shut off from the world,” Banks said honestly. “I recently got diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, which made perfect sense to me. It’s amazing how much clarity finding out what mental health issues you have can give you as far as your day to day life. At the time when I wrote this song, I had just come out of a huge depression - I tried to kill myself - and I had a lot of shit going on. My friends were killing themselves and it was just a mess, it was chaotic. Paul and Barnabas retraced their steps. Even though they had suffered hardship there, they went back. // 2. They returned to strengthen the believers. They chose to risk suffering for the sake of the new believers. // 3. The message they brought was a reminder that the disciples must suffer hardships in order to enter God’s kingdom. // // We, who are called, will suffer. We come to Christ to die.
