Episode #97. Marissa Valdez is a Latina children's book author and illustrator who loves to create funny, ridiculous, and spunky characters for meaningful stories. She originally received her Bachelors of Fine Arts in Animation, but life swept her away from animation and into the world of children's illustration in the midst of 2020 and the pandemic. She's now worked on books with the major publishing houses Hachette, Penguin Random House, Macmillan, and Candlewick Books. Two books that Marissa illustrated, Ambitious Girl written by Meena Harris and Hattie Harmony: Worry Detective written by Elizabeth Olsen and Robbie Arnett, reached the #1 spot on the New York Times Bestsellers list. She also recently won a Golden Kite Honor for her illustrations in Esme's Birthday Conga Line, a chapter book written by Lourdes Heuer (pronounced Higher). Marissa is currently working on several other projects, including her own book, that she both wrote and illustrated, which she's excited to share with the world in 2025. Along with creating books, Marissa enjoys teaching and has collaborated with the online learning platform, Domestika, to teach a course on how to create a children's book portfolio. Marissa enjoys finding everyday inspiration in her vegetable garden, reading sci-fi and fantasy books, and rambling around villages in the United Kingdom with her two cats and husband, with whom she shares her West Midlands home. Originally from the South Texas border, Marissa also enjoys incorporating her Hispanic heritage, childhood experiences growing up in Texas, and love of bright colors into her artwork and stories. From bestselling author and entrepreneur Meena Harris, The Truth About Mrs. Claus offers a fresh take on holiday stories with an empowering story about being true to yourself, honoring family traditions, and believing in Christmas magic. In this holiday picture book, Amalia the Elf loves everything about making teddy bears . . .Watching Grandma and Mama sew! Feeling the soft, velvety fur!Imagining the bears in their new homes!. . except the bear-making part. Worried about disappointing her family, Amalia goes straight to Santa for advice. But it's Mrs. Claus who knows how to solve Amalia's problem—and who needs help with a secret of her own. It's about finding truth in purpose while acknowledging important traditions; it's about intergenerational relationships, and finding your own way, even when it means reshaping other's expectations. Changing course, developing new interests, and challenging norms can feel scary—I hope every child that picks up this book has someone in their corner as they forge new paths ahead.”

On 12th January, the Haryana police arrested Nodeep Kaur, a Dalit labour activist while she was protesting against the non-payment of wages at Kundali industrial area (KIA) at Sonipat, Haryana. Kaur is from Punjab and the leader of Mazdoor Adhikar Sangathan, who is supporting ongoing farmer's protests at the Haryana and UP border. US Vice President's niece Meena Harris tweeted her picture asking her to release brought her to notice. Farmer's uprising circling National Capital got momentum and support across the globe, which asked the Central government to repeal three farms laws, which was passed through ordinance last year. United farmers organizations had 11 rounds of talks with the government and submitted 8 point charter. That demand includes the law on Minimum Support Price or MSP and repeals those three laws, which are related to open market trading, contractual farming, and excluding many products from the essential commodity list. The one issue, which is still missing from the farmer's protest and on their agenda is Landless farmers or farm laborers issues. The 2011 census data shows that 71% of Dalits are landless laborers. In rural areas, 58.4% of Dalit households do not own land at all. Landless farmers belong to Dalit and Backward community with depressed wages and vulnerable to caste atrocity on daily basis. The host of this episode of The Suno India Show, Prashant Kanojia spoke to Nodeep Kaur's sister, Rajvir Kaur and her mother, Swarnjit Kaur. We also spoke to farmer leaders and protestors from the protest site and a journalist from Bihar. While explaining how the farm laws would affect landless farmers, they also highlighted the issues related to landless farmers and labourers, which has been undermined and is not on the agenda of the ongoing protest. They explain how these farmers are not recognized as farmers and how they could widen the protest across India.  See sunoindia.in/privacy-policy for privacy information.

Just as farmers have been accusing the Centre of harassing them in a bid to shutdown their protest, the whole movement against the centre's controversial farm laws got a fresh impetus as it gained an overwhelming international attention. On 2 February, when Singer and actor Rihanna shared a report by CNN on the internet blockade imposed around Delhi, on her Twitter asking her 100 million strong followers “Why aren't we talking about this?! #FarmersProtest” — barely hours within posting the tweet, a huge amount of global support came pouring in from international icons, journalists, activists, advocacy groups and legislators too. Rihanna's tweet is perhaps not all that suprising since she has frequently spoke up about human rights issues such as Black Lives Matter and even the recent coup in Myanmar. But immediately after Rihanna's tweet, teen environmental activist Greta Thunberg also tweeted saying, "We stand in solidarity with the #FarmersProtest in India." British MP Claudia Webbe retweeted Rihanna's post and wrote: "Solidarity to the Indian Farmers. Thank you Rihanna. In an era where political leadership is lacking we are grateful for others stepping forward." US Vice President Kamala Harris's niece Meena Harris wrote, “It's no coincidence that the world's oldest democracy was attacked not even a month ago, and as we speak, the most populous democracy is under assault. This is related. We all should be outraged by India's internet shutdowns and paramilitary violence against farmer protesters." Is this renewed international support going to be a significant turning point in the farmers' protest? The ancient R̥gvēda has a lovely line which goes "आ नो भद्रा: क्रतवो यन्तु विश्वत:", loosely translated as, "May noble thoughts come to us from all directions." The list of "noble" thoughts this week includes the unfunny Navratri meme of Meena Harris, the inaccurate Sanskrit translations of names of US election candidates, the incredible moral grandstanding of Surat Police while wishing Navratri (and they are not alone in this, not by a light year), and of course, the unacceptable degeneracy of Eros linking Navratri to some sexual playtime. Also, a detour on what you would do if you are in a ristorante and you are served a pizza with a slice eaten by someone else? With such thoughts around us, does the lovely line from R̥gvēda remain relevant? While exploring that, we venture into the not-so-idealistic world of our ancestors during the Vedic times, and ensure that the there is a fire that is steadily burning within us, and not just during festival times.

Meena Harris' story is shaped by the many strong women who raised her. She is now honoring their legacy with a new children's book, Kamala and Maya's Big Idea, a picture book about two sisters who work together to change their community. The book is inspired by a true story Meena heard from childhood about her aunt, U.S. Senator Kamala Harris, and her mother, lawyer and policy expert Maya Harris. Join Meena at INFORUM to learn about the power of raising children who are engaged in their community and how generations to come can enact lasting change. This program will be moderated by author and artist Jessica Hische. Meena Harris is a lawyer, activist, and the founder of the Phenomenal Woman Action Campaign, a female-powered organization that brings awareness to intersectional social causes. And now Meena is also an author, with her new children's book titled Kamala and Maya's Big Idea, set to debut on June 2nd. The book is based on a true story from the childhood of Meena's mom, Maya Harris, and aunt, Kamala Harris. In it, two sisters make a difference in their community by dreaming big, organizing across diverse groups, and fighting for what they believe in. Senator Elizabeth Warren calls it “A must read for little girls around the world.” And Stacy Abrams says the book is “An inspiring tale.” In this conversation, Meena and I talk about the creative process of writing her first children's book, the impact of diverse representation in children's books, and how stories shape our identities from a young age.
