Track 16 - Merry Christmas Darling
What the Riff!?! delves once again into the great (and not so great) Christmas songs to add a little cheer as you rock around the Christmas tree this year.“Carol of the Bells” by Mannheim SteamrollerMannheim Steamroller covers a Ukrainian carol from 1922. They highlight a 3 against 2 polyrhythm that is present in the original song, and add a major key change that is not present in the original. This is off their second Christmas album released in 1988 entitled "A Fresh Aire Christmas." “O Come O Come Emanuel” by Bad ReligionThis fast-paced rendition takes an 8th century song and puts a punk twist to it. It is a quick song, like most bad Religion tracks. “Yellin' at the Xmas Tree” by Billy IdolRocker Billy Idol reminisces about times with his drunk father yelling at the Christmas tree. "Oh the Christmas bells are ringing and the carolers are singing, but Daddy, he don't hear 'em, he's yellin' at the Christmas tree."“Space Christmas” by Shonen KnifeThis Japanese punk-pop band was inspired by the girl groups of the 60's and the Ramones. This sci-fi Christmas track has a "bubblegum pop" sound with a punk edge. “Taking Care of Christmas” by Bachman Turner OverdriveWhen Rob covered "Bachman Turner Overdrive II" earlier this year we discovered this Christmas remake of their classic single. It is surprisingly catchy for a song overhauled for Christmas. Randy Bachman did an all-Christmas album in 2008 including this song.“Christmas All Over Again” by Tom Petty and the HeartbreakersThis original song was penned by Tom Petty on a ukulele in 1992. It was used in the motion picture "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York," and also appeared in "Jingle All the Way." Jeff Lynne co-produced the song, played bells, bass, timpani, sang background vocals, and wishes for a Chuck Berry Songbook in the song.“God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” by the REO SpeedwagonREO Speedwagon keeps the original feel of the carol in their rendition of this classic. It was released on their 2009 album, "Not So Silent Night...Christmas with REO Speedwagon." The original English carol dates back to the 1650's. “Santa Claus” by The SonicsThis song with a fuzzy guitar appeared on the debut album from The Sonics back in 1965. The Sonics were a garage band out of Tacoma, Washington in the 60's, and influenced the punk and grunge movement. They are likely best known for their party song, "Louie, Louie."“Santa's Messin' with the Kid” by Eddie C. CampbellBlues guitarist and singer Eddie C. Campbell was well known in the Chicago blues scene and learned guitar from Muddy Waters. This song was released on his 1977 Christmas album.“What Christmas Means to Me” by Stevie WonderThis original song was released on Tamla records in 1967 on Wonder's eighth studio album entitled "Someday at Christmas." It was the final track on the album which consisted of a mix of Christmas standards and original music. “Merry Christmas Darling” by the CarpentersNo Christmas playlist would be complete without Karen Carpenter's voice. This song was originally recorded by The Carpenters in 1970. The lyrics date back to 1946 when songwriter Frank Pooler wrote it about a love interest at the time. He had The Carpenters perform it when they were his music students at California State University, Long Beach.“White Christmas” by Bing CrosbyBing Crosby originally performed this song composed by Irving Berlin in 1940. It was performed for the first time in December 1941, and appeared in the motion picture "Holiday Inn" in 1942. (and there might be a bonus song...)We at What the Riff?!? wish every one a blessed and Merry Christmas!

Party Favorz is wrapping up November with our annual X-mas Dance series and we've gone overboard to bring newer holiday sounds remixed for the dance floor along with fan favorites from over the years. In fact, there was so many new remixes available — there was enough to make an EDM/Dance Club version but honestly, I'm petered out. That will be saved for the 2022 release. This set leans heavily on the Circuit side because Dario Xavier released five holiday remixes coupled with one from last year I forgot I had. Jet Boot Jack released a remix for Diana Ross' version of 'This Christmas' (originally made famous by Donny Hathaway) and Joel Dickinson (a.k.a. Thee Werq'n Bitches and formerly one half of The Assembly with Billy Waters) had remixed The Carpenters' 'Merry Christmas Darling,' which I've had for a several years but never used because it was kinda dark but figured 'what the hell.' Of course Houston's Dirty Disco dropped their annual holiday mix and this year's entry features Kiva on the Mariah Carey classic 'All I Want For Christmas." The rest of the set was rounded out by favorites from over the years including alternate versions of many of those tracks rarely or never used in a set before. Overall this is a solid effort that's bound to put a smile on the face of the most hardened Grinch. The past 30 days have been pretty rough for me and it feels like I'm being pulled in multiple directions. Couple that with the typical holiday blues and I just need a little space for a bit. Don't even get me started over the exploding cases of Covid or the new variant discovered in Africa, which will be in your neighborhood before you finish listening to this latest set of holiday cheer. No, irony isn't dead on me [grin]. I've cut back my ambitions for December so here's what to expect: First up will be the annual Jingle Electric featuring the latest Dance Club tracks, Holiday Edition 2021 featuring the latest Circuit and Anthems tracks and then our Year In Dance featuring the biggest Dance songs of 2021. Finally, we'll cap the year off with the annual Blow Your Own Horn 2022, which is the ultimate New Years dance party mix that raises the roof and burns down the year that was before bringing us into a new one. As you can see, there's still a lot more to go. Until the next time...ENJOY! Album: X-mas Dance Mix 2021 Genre: Circuit, House, Disco Year: 2021 Total Time: 02:36:56 1. Dirty Disco feat. This week's episode features two very different conversations. First, I talk to Patrick Droney, a Nashville-based guitarist trying to establish himself as an artist who makes soulful contemporary rock music. In October, he released an EP, State of the Heart, and he'll flesh it out with an album-length version this spring. Between those releases, he put out a cover of Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You" as one of Spotify's Holiday Singles. We talk about covering Mariah and the role the song plays in his effort to establish himself. Then, New Orleans musician Boyfriend returns to 12 Songs to discuss Amy Grant's first of three Christmas albums, A Christmas Album from 1983. Nothing in her catalogue would lead listeners to believe the album was in her background, but she explains why it is in fact one of her favorite Christmas albums. Boyfriend also appeared to talk about "All I Want for Christmas is You" and The Carpenters' "Merry Christmas Darling." Since I often ask the people I talk to about their early Christmas music memories, it seems only fair to share one of my own. To that end, I have included a song I discovered in my mom's box of singles: "I Yust Go Nuts at Christmas" by Yogi Yorgesson from 1949.

Will this song heal everyone of what 2020 has done? Possibly. In the shortest episode we have ever uploaded, Travis and Adam look to spread Christmas cheer by singing "Merry Christmas, Darling" originally sung by the Carpenters. At some points, your ears will believe that these angelic voices that harmonize so clear together, were made just for you to feel peace during this holiday season. Give it a listen. (Sidenote: I wanted all hosts to do a song, but nobody else would)
Hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot welcome our crate-digging Kris Kringle, Andy Cirzan to share great holiday songs that aren't played-out. What began as a Christmas present to a high school crush in 1944 turned into a #1 Christmas hit more than 25 years later. Here are things you didn't know about Merry Christmas Darling, by The Carpenters. Merry Christmas, Darling was recorded in 1970 by The Carpenters. It went to #1 on Billboard’s Christmas chart in 1970, 1971 and 1973. It started off as a high school crush. The original lyrics were written in 1944 by an 18-year-old named Frank Pooler about a girl he had a crush on at the time. Frank Pooler was a high schooler in Onalaska, Wisconsin. In the summer of ‘44, Frank spent all his free time with a girl he was smitten with – the younger sister of the Onalaska High School Band and Choir director. Even after the summer was over, Frank kept thinking about this girl. Frank hadn’t written many songs, but he wanted to write one for her. He once told The LaCrosse Tribune newspaper “I was 18 and the hormones were raging.” Unfortunately, before he gave her his present, they broke up. But Frank held on to those lyrics. Flash forward 22 years, Frank was a choral director at California State University at Long Beach and there were two siblings in his class: Karen and Richard Carpenter. The Carpenters were having some success getting local gigs and asked their professor if he had ideas for something they could do at Christmas. They were tired of singing the same standards over and over and wanted something new. Pooler passed on lyrics to the Christmas song he wrote when he was a teenager. Richard Carpenter took the lyrics, but wrote a different melody for them. The song we now know was co-written by two 18-year-old guys, a generation apart. The Carpenters went on to a lot more than just playing local gigs and by 1970, they charted their first two hits: Close to You and We’ve Only Just Begun. Still tight with his music teacher, Richard Carpenter called Frank Pooler and invited him to a recording studio at A&M Records. When Frank arrived, Richard pushed play and Frank couldn’t believe it. He didn’t recognize it right away but about 10 seconds later, he was totally floored. Frank Pooler died in 2013, but before he did, he had a chance to track down that girl he wrote the song for. Again, telling The Lacrosse Tribune, that they got together and the subject of the song came up. She knew that he had written the song, but Frank asked her if she knew he had written that song about her. She said “no…but now I have a treasure.” Thanks for joining us - don’t forget to hit subscribe because we’ve got more stories & videos coming!

Track 03 - Merry Christmas, Darling
In 2012, Kishi Bashi recorded “It’s Christmas, But It’s Not White Here in Our Town.” The song was a Kickstarter premium he offered when trying to raise money for his debut album, 151a, and once it was finished, his label Joyful Noise proposed releasing it as a limited edition Flexi-disc. Recently, I talked with Kishi Bashi about the song and how he built it—like his other songs—through a series of overdubs and looped parts that he played on his violin. We also talked about his upbringing as the son of parents who came from Japan to America, and how their experiences helped shape his Christmases. When we spoke, he was on tour in support of his most recent album, Omoiyari. Kishi Bashi is a multi-instrumentalist whose primary instrument is the violin, and he generally performs and records as a one-man act, looping parts to create a full band experience even though he’s the only one playing. His songs have often had a psychedelic pop beauty to them, but on Omoiyari, his songs have higher stakes as he addresses the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. He uses his songs to try to better understand and connect with not just the situation but the people involved, and he does so without sacrificing the beauty that is present in his compositions. During our conversation, I referred to an archive titled Attention Kmart Shoppers, where someone digitized the vinyl records and cassette tapes that stores were provided to play as background music. I played part of one of the Christmas albums, which you can hear in its entirety and download from the site. I also talked to New Orleans’ Boyfriend about The Carpenters’ “Merry Christmas Darling.” Boyfriend also has new Christmas music that we didn’t mention since it wasn’t out when we recorded this conversation. She collaborated with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band for a version of “You’re a Mean One, Mr Grinch” from How The Grinch Stole Christmas. It’s an exclusive to Spotify, and you can hear it there or at MySpiltMilk.com, where I wrote a round-up of New Orleans-based Christmas songs that include all four of the Preservation Hall tracks that showed up as Spotify singles this Christmas season, and two new takes on classics by Kristin Diable.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Thanks for taking the time out to listen this week. This week we had a lot fun talking to Michael Longoria, Latino singer/actor/dancer who has performed on Broadway’s Jersey Boys as Frankie Valli and many Broadway shows, plus, is a current member of musical group The Midtown Men. He’s now out with a new Christmas album called Merry Christmas Darling and I talk to him about how he carries his cultural identity and how it’s shaped him to be the person he is today.
Host Alex Rawls revisits familiar territory when he talks about Toronto and Southern Ontario among other things with Chris McKhool of the Canadian progressive string band Sultans of String, who released a Christmas album, Christmas Caravan, last year. They talk about Turkish strings, "Happy Xmas (War is Over)," and Mario Lanza during Christmas dinner. This week, Alex also talks to New Orleans musician Boyfriend about her affection for The Carpenters and particularly "Merry Christmas Darling," which found a new musical life when it appeared in the 2003 film, Love Actually. You can find the Sultans of String on Facebook and the band's website, and you can hear Boyfriend on her Soundcloud page and find out more about her on her website. If you've got thoughts on this week's episode, please share them on the 12 Songs Facebook page.
